I’m very new to woodblock prints. I’m wondering when this Hiroshige was printed. Unless I’m super lucky and it’s original I’m curious as to what type of reproduction it is. The frame is stamped by a local frame shop that closed in 1979. The paper feels almost like fine birch bark and you can see bleed-through on the back almost like it’s a watercolor.
I found this at Goodwill for 20 bucks! I'm curious about this piece. Can anyone tell me about it? I tried google translate but it wasnt great.. I think it's a poem?
Aloha
I purchased this piece from a estate sale and wondering if any soul out there can help me identify it. Perhaps offer a little history on the maker, worth, age and so forth. Between web search, Claude and Gemini i am getting real mixed information. This was a passion buy and like to know all that i can about this beautiful thing. Thank you all for your time.
Be well.
I wanted to share a non-commercial, independent cultural project I’ve been working on:www.soundofxilography.com
It is a clean, ad-free digital gallery born out of a pure passion for Japanese woodblock printing. The website acts as a visual journey through both classic Ukiyo-e and contemporary visions.
Inside, you will find sections dedicated to:
Onna-Bugeisha*: The history and prints of legendary female samurai warriors (featuring works by Kuniyoshi and Yoshikazu).*
Ukiyo-e Masters*: Profiles on Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Kunisada, and Hiroshige.*
Contemporary Masters*: Modern woodblock prints by artists like Hajime Namiki (with his beautiful pine trees on gold leaf) and Miyamoto Shufu.*
The site is fully accessible for study and appreciation. I would love to hear your thoughts or feedback!

È una galleria digitale pulita, senza pubblicità, nata da una pura passione per la stampa a blocchi di legno giapponese. Il sito funge da viaggio visivo attraverso sia l'Ukiyo-e classico che le visioni contemporanee.
All'interno troverai sezioni dedicate a:

Hello Everyone,
Purchased this beautiful ink and gold artwork and would love to know the artist. Can anyone help deciphering the seal ? Thank you in advance for any lead or help.
I purchased this beautiful original Nihonga (Mineral pigments artwork) and would love to know more about the artists and decipher the full signature at the back.
I believe the title is "HOPE" and the painting is from 1994.
Any help is welcome !
I bought this awhile ago at a thrift store and have it hung up on my office. Friends are like, Woah looks old, have you had it looked at? Well I didn't and now I'm a bit curious. Japanese maybe?
I have this very beautiful Charcoal Maiko drawing. It’s quite large and prominent. F12 size? Slightly longer though.
It’s from 1976 and there’s writing on the front and back of the paper itself. The writing says (Paraphrasing) Mametsuru, Gion Kobu, July 7th. On the day of Tanabata?
There’s no artist signature as I believe it was a private piece done for the Teahouse on the spot for Mametsuru.
However, to me it looks very much like Ryohei Koiso? I can’t find an image or a catalogue of it online anywhere. But, I can’t seem to connect the time and style to anyone other than Koiso.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone can tell me who they believe this could be? Or if you’ve seen it or similar somewhere before.
A client family gifted our office this framed tapestry/textile art years ago, I’m curious if anyone can tell me what the story is here? Or any details :) I work at a funeral home if that is pertinent
Hi there, I'm really glad I found this subreddit, this place is EXACTLY what I was looking for ... (!)
Ok, I went down a little bit of a Edo-period rabbit hole (lol) and was reading up on the history of glass, glass windows and architecture in Japan, and basically, I was looking to see if there were any (famous, or contemporary) depictions of glass architecture (or even if there are any examples of entirely improvised by artists/movements in our current era).
I know that glass was essentially "reintroduced" during the Edo period, after a brief period around 300BC - 300CE, where it existed, but then died out during the Middle Ages from what I've read, before it came back again ...
Since it came back during Edo, this would've been right around the time when Ukiyo-e prints REALLY took off, so I was just wondering, were there any significant or famous depictions of glass, glass archetecture, features, or windows/stained window archetecture (maybe even churches or something) that exists in any prints or paintings from the era?
If this is actually an anachronism because of Edo drawings/prints happened to "die out" out when glass became more mainstream as archetecture, then are there any prominent/vial modern pieces or art movements (like maybe Shin-Hanga or something) or maybe even parodies/modern reinterpretations/copycats drawing inspiration from the traditional Ukiyo-e style?
Nuanced artwork of this particular nature is really hard to find using keywords (if it exists), to be truthful, I don't even know if what I'm looking for does exist, but I'm just really interested in seeing any prominent images and artworks (or even reinterpretations) of depictions of glass, glass features or glass archetecture in this style, especially if they're from an era when both the Ukiyo-e style was still in fashion, and during the period glass/windows had been introduced as a standard material in parts of Japanese society ...
I realize that this is really niche (lol) But any help, or links to specific images, or other artist's works depicting such eras/ "modern" Ukiyo-e interpretations would be really appreciated =] Thanks very much in advance ^_ -
It's hard using keywords, but when searching, I think I was onto something here lolThis is what I mean by "modern reinterpretations" of the style (lol) if anyones made depictions of glass, I'd love to see =]
