Ask Kurds 🤔 As Kurds, what are your experiences with Arabs? Why is there so much anti Kurdish hatred among some Sunni Arabs?

Hey everyone,
I'm a Kurd originally from Bakur, but I wanted to ask our brothers and sisters from Rojava and Bashur and anyone else with experience about something that’s been on my mind.
How do Arabs generally react to you being Kurdish? If you’ve lived in Arab majority areas or interacted with them a lot, what have your experiences been like?
Is there a deep seated hatred toward us? And if so, where does it actually come from?
I remember back in high school here in Europe, I noticed that some Sunni Arab refugees seemed to hold a deep internal dislike or prejudice against Kurds. What confused me the most was that at the time, it was Assad and the Alawite regime driving them out of their homes not Kurds. Yet, the moment the topic of Kurds came up, this strong pan Arab nationalist mindset suddenly emerged.
Why do you think that is? I’d love to hear your thoughts and personal experiences.

Ask Kurds 🤔 People see me as a girl and i have feelings for girls and i don't see myself as a girl

I'm a kurdish person who has gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder the society might sees me as a tomboy maybe but i see myself as a dude but kinda get lost between what society sees me and what i see myself and that's really been hard on me

And i also have feelings for girls but i don't see that it's a lesbian thing cause i see myself as a guy so it makes me a straight person, Kurdish society doesn't really support LGBTQ or have that knowledge about them but i also don't count myself as a part of LGBTQ community

I just find it really hard to force myself to make me belong to somewhere i don't fit in, i did also mention that i have feelings towards girls which is way harder cause i also distance myself from everyone cause i feel lost i really need help idk what to do anymore with everything

Ask Kurds 🤔 Why are you Apoçî?

Silav û rêz,

I understand if someone have been Apoçî before, but what are the reason that you are Apoçî today despite all thier falws?

And I’m genuinely asking the question there’s no ”conspiracy” about it.

Is it because you grew up in a household that is Apoçî or are there other reasons?

Ask Kurds 🤔 Can i wear this to a kurdish wedding?

Hey guys, i am invited to a kurdish wedding (in germany) of a friend (groom) and was wondering if wearing this red dress would be okay or if the color is too bright. I sm from the balkan and there it is fine to wear dresses like this, but i want to be respectful and not wear the wrong color, so im insecure about it. The light blue dress (is it maybe too light?) would be the other option, which one is better? also i will be having way less cleavage this time, as i lost a lot of weight and will cover my shoulders with a stola.

Ask Kurds 🤔 Kurdish parents will not let me move out for uni

Hello, I’ve never posted on Reddit before, but I can’t seem to find any advice on this topic from other Kurds, so I thought I’d ask here.

My parents immigrated to England around 20 years ago, and I’ve lived here my entire life. However, my Kurdish culture has always been a big part of my upbringing.
I’ve always been a good daughter. I’ve never gotten into trouble over boys, drinking or anything like that, and I’ve always worked hard at school and achieved good grades.
I’ve always wanted to attend a good university, preferably a Russell Group university, and I’ve been studying really hard to achieve the grades I need. I’m currently completing my UCAS application and have already chosen my five universities.

The problem is that I live in a small town with a local university that, in my opinion, isn’t particularly good. The entry requirements are very low compared to the universities I’m aiming for, and I don’t want all the effort I’ve put into getting good grades to go to waste because I’m not allowed to pursue the opportunities I’ve worked so hard for.

I’ve always been open with my parents about wanting to study outside our town, and until recently, they never really objected. My dad has actually been quite supportive. However, now that the application deadline is approaching, my mum is refusing to let me go. She has said that she would rather I not pursue higher education at all than attend a university outside our town. I have no intention of going to university to party, drink or date. I simply want to get a good degree, build a career and make something of myself. I don’t understand why I’m being denied this opportunity when I’ve worked so hard for it.

My parents argue that they don’t know any Kurdish girls who have moved away for university, and that the girls they know have all stayed in our town. I have cousins in Kurdistan who attend universities outside their home cities, and some even live independently, but my parents dismiss this by arguing that it’s safer there.

My mum is significantly stricter than my dad, and I feel that she has a lot of influence over his opinions and decisions. Other members of her family, including my uncles, also tend to get involved in our family matters, which makes everything even more difficult.

I feel stuck because I want to respect my parents and my culture, but I also don’t want to sacrifice my education and future over something that feels so important to me. I’ve worked hard for these opportunities, and it’s upsetting to think that I might have to give them up simply because I’m not allowed to move away.

Has anyone else experienced something similar in a Kurdish family? How did you handle it? I’d really appreciate any advice on how I could approach this situation or convince my parents to let me go.

Ask Kurds 🤔 do gay Kurds even exist? I feel alone

Hello, I’m (21M) Kurd and gay. Don’t take title so literally because I know there are definitely Gay Kurds somewhere on the earth. I just to share that I have been feeling so lonely in my Kurdish community as there aren’t people like me, not even signs that indicate one of them is LGBT even though my Kurdish community and many other Kurdish communities don’t comment on people’s behaviors and aren’t religious as much as Arab communities which have many gay men in it, from my experience, I have only been able to encounter Arab guys who are either open about it or married but secretly gay, however, It’s really difficult to find gay Kurdish guys even though I interact with them more. Like there aren’t even Discord Servers or Subreddits dedicated to LGBT Kurds whereas there are SO many for LGBT Arabs. It’s really frustrating and sometimes depressing that I won’t be able to find a partner who speaks the same language as me and understands my struggles and the Kurdish struggle in the Middle East.

If you are LGBT, how were you able to find a Kurdish partner?

Ask Kurds 🤔 religion

Hello, I’m Kurdish (from Duhok), 18F. My whole life, I’ve struggled with Islam and Abrahamic religions in general. When I was 13, I started researching Christianity and Buddhism because they made more sense to me at the time. At 16, I returned to Islam and repented, I wore the niqab, then the hijab. However, at 17, I took it off and drifted away from Islam again.I have no hate toward Muslims, but the more I researched and learned about the religion, the less sense it truly made to me. In fact, none of the Abrahamic religions resonate with me. But as a young girl from Duhok, regardless of what I believe, I’m expected to continue praying, act like a believer in front of my family, and eventually marry a believer, none of which align with who I am.I wanted to ask if any other Kurds are facing something similar and if we could share our spiritual beliefs and experiences.

Ask Kurds 🤔 Am I still Kurdish?

Hi everyone,

"This will be a bit long"

I wanted to share something personal and hear ur thoughts.

I’m a Kurdish girl. My father is Kurdish, my mother is Kurdish, and all my grandparents are Kurdish. As far as I know, we don’t have any Arab roots. But the thing is… we don’t speak Kurdish.

We live in the far south of Iraq, surrounded by Arabs. Because of the former dictatorship, my family felt pressure to hide their identity, so over time the language was lost.

Even tho I’ve never been to Kurdistan, I feel deeply connected to it. I truly love Kurdish pple and culture, and from the bottom of my heart, I hope to see Kurdistan become an independent state one day—whether I’m part of it or not, whether I get a passport or not.

But here’s what’s been hurting me…

Some of my family say that Kurds in Kurdistan wouldn’t accept us—that they would see us as Arabs and not as Kurds. And even Arabs around me tell me I’m not Kurdish just coz I don’t speak the language.

I tried to learn Kurdish, but it’s been really hard. Unlike English, there aren’t many resources, and no one around me speaks it. When I try to study, pple look at me like I’m crazy. Over time, I lost motivation and gave up more than once.

Now I feel stuck.

I’m proud of my Kurdish roots, but I’m starting to feel like maybe everyone is right… maybe I have Kurdish blood, but I’ve become completely Arab in reality. (not saying it’s a bad thing, I just don’t like feeling like I’m not who I truly am).

I still have so much curiosity about Kurdish culture, language, and even the difficult truths about our pple.

So I wanted to ask honestly:

Would u consider someone like me Kurdish?

Ask Kurds 🤔 How traditional are Kurds

Hello and apologies if this is a naive question. On the askmiddle east sub Kurds get talked about like they’re very very traditional minded and I think some comments even called them one of the most regressive groups in the Middle East or at lead Turkey. Given my personal experience with Kurds I was a bit surprised to hear this but of course that’s anecdotal.

as someone that is in this sub bc of interest in Kurdish history mainly I am curious as to how much this holds true today and why you think ppl were saying that?

of course no disrespect if they are correct. just curious :)

Ask Kurds 🤔 Question for German Kurds

As a Kurd, do you face much sexism or racism?
If you do, who do you mostly experience it from, and when/where do you get targeted the most?

I’m planning to study and work there for a few years, and honestly, I really want to enjoy my time abroad, experience the culture, travel, and just experience everything. I’ve never been abroad before and I don’t have anyone there, so I’m kinda excited but also curious about what it’s actually like 😭
And do u guys have work placement there?

I’m kinda scared so I’d really appreciate it if you could answer all of my questions, preferably with as much detail as possible. I’m genuinely curious and want to know what it’s actually like, so please don’t skip any of the questions 😭
Sorry for the bad English 🌚🌸

Ask Kurds 🤔 Anti Kurdish propaganda

Last night I came across a tweet on X discussing the apparent rise of anti-Kurdish propaganda across Arab countries and the broader Muslim world over the past few years, and honestly, it got me concerned. The way Kurds are increasingly being portrayed in some of these spaces seems to go beyond ordinary political disagreements, with people spreading hateful rhetoric and painting Kurds in an extremely dehumanizing light. I’m genuinely concerned about how widespread this might be, how much influence it’s gaining online, and whether this kind of rhetoric could eventually translate into real-world hostility and violence against our people. Have any of you noticed this trend yourselves? Have you come across examples of this propaganda on social media or elsewhere? I’d genuinely like to hear what others have seen, because I think it’s something we should be paying attention to rather than dismissing it outright.

Any suggestions?
