Discussion Fair warning: Outlook is phasing out "of."

As though we needed MORE reasons to hate Outlook. (Users know.)

Frustration edit: I wrote a quick example sentence during my lunch at work, including a second "of" which I'll admit sounds a little awkward in context.

But Outlook suggests this EVERY TIME. It could say "Look at all of those chickens." 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆 Full stop. Still tries to change EVERY instance of "all of" to "all," context notwithstanding.

Question Guess my native languages from the hints!! (Easy)

the two besides English!!!

- Due to conflict, a lot of people came to other countries from their homeland. These languages are both Slavic.

- There’s a city in the USA full of people who speak this language but if I say what, it will probably give it away and I also live near this city but not in it…

Video I turned Arabic roots into a slot machine-style learning game

Hi everyone!

I'm Alaa, an Arabic language educator, and I've been working on a personal project called Rooto.

I've noticed that Arabic learners often struggle with memorizing vocabulary without understanding how words are connected through roots and patterns.

So I created Rooto, an interactive web app inspired by a slot machine. With every spin, you discover an Arabic root, a word pattern, a derived word, its English meaning, and an example sentence showing how the word is used in context.

The idea is to make learning Arabic a little more playful and engaging!

Here's a quick video of how it works.

Try it here: https://rooto.app

I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Question What can you tell me about the dialect or language of this book?

Post image
34 Upvotes

I know a little bit of Italian, but unfortunately, I couldn't make sense of the regional variations. In a few places, it looks like a different symbol was used instead of a double 's'. The book was written in Bologna. What are the linguistic features to watch out for in this book? What is different from today's Italian? What are the reasons for these differences? Are there any specific scientific language differences?

Edit:

Thanks for all of the answers. My knowledge of the language is very limited, and i have a hard time understanding complex sentences. I didn't take any lessons or such. I found this source while i'm on a different kind of research, and i wanted to understand why it's readable but strange. So, every answer really helped me understand and be amazed by the text. You're all awesome :)

Question Help me identify a language based on the word for "shoes"

Hello all,

Apologies in advance for any improper terminology I may use in this post. I am not a linguist.

I work in retail, and today we had a customer come in who didn't speak English at all. She asked me for help in her native language, which was no problem obviously, but it wasn't a language I recognized and it's been plaguing me all day.

She was wearing a hijab, so I assumed a Semitic, North African, or Austronesian language, just based on the languages commonly spoken in the Islamic world. But the only word I have to go off of - the word for "shoes" - I haven't been able to find in a translator or dictionary. I can't remember it perfectly, but I recall it starting with an S or SH sound, along with having a P and an L in it somewhere. I wanna say it was "schlipessi" or something but I'm positive that's wrong. (I'm sorry this is so vague - the shift was very long and if I could remember more I would share ☹️)

I have no idea if this is the right subreddit for this, but I've been driving myself in circles all day trying to figure this out so I thought I'd at least try my luck here.

Thank you!
