Announcements Law School Student's FAQs:

I created this FAQ so that the common questions with regard to law school should be addressed, and not to repeat the thread, as shown in the previous posts here. So here it goes:

  1. Pwede po ba eto ang pre-law ko?

Ans: Thank you u/Petrichor005 for this. I have seen so many a post in connection with this question. Guys, any pre-law course is acceptable in law school as long as you graduate a 4 year course in college. Although there are advantages of different courses in college when you enter law, you are all in equal footing. Sure, Accountancy, for example, has a lot of law subjects, but you could surpass them by studying and discipline.

2. Incoming 1L. Ano pong books ang pwede kong basahin for advanced reading?

Ans: Thank you u/chiefyaj. I don't recommend advanced reading. If you are an incoming 1st year, enjoy the rest of your free time, because once in you are in law school, free time is a luxury, an essential luxury. Moreover, studying in advance will lead you to burnout. It would be best to wait for your professor’s course syllabus so that you will have a proper guide on what to read.

3. Pwede po ba mag work full time pag nag enroll sa law?

Ans: Sure! A lot of students do that. Heck, some working students thrived, and got honors in law school.

Ans: Yes. Reading PDFs is a cost effective way to save from the book expenses in law school especially when the subject is a 2 or 1 unit only. I, for one, read some PDFs when I was in law school, but my comprehension, and memory retention are stronger when I read physical books.

5. Am I too old to go to law school?

Ans: No. There is no age cap in law school. As long as you have a determination to study the law, no one can stop you from learning. I had had classmates who are senior citizens!

6. Codals for freshman

Ans: Go to your subjects, There, you will know the answer.

  1. How to pick which law school

Ans: It depends on your preference whether you are working, or not. Should you enroll in the big three law schools, it would be advisable to study full time as you will be having a hard time adjusting to their schedule. But, I have heard the UP law has a schedule that caters working students. Arellano, in my opinion, is the best school for working students because you can pick a schedule that suited to your working hours.

8. What to expect

Ans: Observe the atmosphere, and study.

9. How to cope with the pressure.

Ans: Coping with pressure depends on the individual. Some escape the pressure by watching movies, or drinking, but the decision lies on you. You could go for a walk, or exercise.

  1. Contact numbers or the most reliable way to contact the law school (this will be specific like example sbca - calls, in person, and email), and Where to look for cases, full text, international cases, and etc.

Ans: Part of the law profession is research. As such, you should have good skills in researching. Google it! XD

By the way, thank you u/aenzo2696 for these three questions!

11. Book suggestions.

Ans: See for yourself. Borrow from the school's library books of the same subject with different authors. I mention this because the students' read, and comprehend from different authors are different, so it is recommended to read different authors' works. However, my advice is to read from one author and stick to it.

I will make a Wiki for this. Unfortunately, the Wiki is down. So I will pin this post for your reference.

12. Law School Admissions/First Day of School/Requirements for COL

Dude, you are an aspiring lawyer. Research the school you want to take exams, and read its requirements. If its not in the website, then inquire to them. Normally, they are responsive to queries.

13. What to read before law school starts.

As Atty. Baviera said during our orientation in UP Law: Read anything even the label of a product! Since you still have time, better read books, other than law books, which pique your interest. It is also recommended to brush up your vocabulary by using Word Power by Norman Lewis.

14. Entrance Exam Tips

Search this sub. There a plethora of same posts here. All you have to do is research.

Edit: I created a rule that one must first read this FAQ. When a user has posted a thread similar, or impliedly the same as that in the FAQ, such post will be deleted.

Discussions I don't use 90% of what I memorized in law school in actual practice

Just wanted to put this out there given recent discussions about overhauling the Philippine law education system.

I'm a practicing corporate lawyer, and honestly, I wonder what the point was of memorizing so much shit in law school.

Most of what I do now was learned on the job. Due diligence, drafting contracts, general corporate services, advising clients, dealing with regulatory requirements. A lot of corporate practice revolves the principle of autonomy of contracts (hence, what you draft generally overrides what the law says).

And we barely studied the special laws and administrative issuances that actually come up in practice. DTI, BIR, LRA rules and regulations, circulars, memoranda, etc. You end up researching these on the spot anyway. Tbh how is memorizing the rules on builder in good faith/bad faith in Property more useful to me than knowing how to navigate actual regulatory requirements?

Gets ko naman that law school teaches you the fundamentals and how to think like a lawyer. Litigation is also slightly different when you need to think on your feet. But in practice, you have codals, legal databases, jurisprudence, and previous work product. You learn by doing, researching, and asking seniors who have actual experience.

Alam ko some foreign jurisdictions put more emphasis on practical legal training. I wish we had more of that here.

The point is that our current law school and Bar exam system seems designed more to measure academic performance (which is then used to determine employability), and filter who gets to become a lawyer than to actually train good lawyers.

Question & Hypotheticals Based on my experience, lenient profs are more effective.

So, I have a professor who was a Bar topnotcher. He told our class that he was wondering why we seem to be performing better than law students during his time, when classes were purely face-to-face. He thinks it might be because we have online classes and can somehow access our notes during recitations, which is partly true.

This week, we had our final recitation covering Criminal Law, from Article 1 to Article 90. Even I was surprised by how well my classmates handled the recitation.

We were able to cite doctrines, ung iba jurisprudence and the other, provided the verbatim of the provision.

Social Media On being a corporate or commercial lawyer

Post image
68 Upvotes

While this is coming from an idealistic perspective, I would say that check your ranks first. Madami dyan on the side nag pro-pro bono pa rin.

Rant Bro, I HATE studying about easements sa property, pare.

Like, wdyfm na there’s a DOMINANT and SERVIENT estate, pare, pvtanginang ‘yan. Like, “yes, sir, your ownership over your property is dominant over mine po, yessir, 😝😝😝😝😝😝.” Get the fk outta here, pare. “Yes, butasan mo ang (pagmamay)ari ko 🥺” SUSPICIOUS AS FCK, pare. Pvtanginang ‘yan.

Rant i wish law profs would teach

Discussions CDO or LO

Hi everyone! I need your insights.

Im a 2024 bar lawyer.

Im currently under a cos sa govt office. My work includes legal representation, legal consultation, mediation, and other times guest speaker for a bgry seminar. Current rate is ₱2x,xxx, 7 months palang. Im handling one of the busiest municipality and all i could say is work is super demanding because most of it are products from previous employees na hindi ginawa ng tama yung work. In short, taga salo ako ng kapalpakan nila. But im grateful din for this work opportunity.

Now, im thinking of applying for a CDO position but in a different region coz i kind of always liked the idea mag word in court. Hehehe and there’s an opportunity for me there to apply kasi the coc is my friend.

With the current economy, whats my next move? Can anybody share a thought? Would appreciate it!

Advice Testimonial Dinner

Is it normal for law schools to ask students to pay 2,000 each as a contribution for Bar takers’ testimonial dinner? Just genuinely curious because this is my first time experiencing this. Our law school is a state university in the province, and we were recently asked to pay 2,000 for the testimonial dinner for the Bar takers. What surprised me is that we already contributed 2,000 earlier to support the Bar takers during the Bar exams. So this would be another 2,000 on top of that. Medyo mabigat na siya for a working student. For those from other law schools, is this something that is normally required or expected in your schools as well?

Question & Hypotheticals Clarification on composition of JBC

Political Law; Asking for Clarification about this JBC shortlist.

Chavez vs JBC and Umali vs JBC hold that Congress is entitled to only one representative in the JBC and not two. In the Umali case, the SC said the "JBC's membership cannot be increased from seven to eight for it will be a clear violation of the aforesaid constitutional provision. To add another member in the JBC or to increase the representative of Congress to the JBC, the remedy is not judicial but constitutional amendment."

Why does this 26 October 2026 Shortlist show that the JBC has 8 members, and the Congress has two representatives?

Thanks for the help.

Discussions Book Stand Recommendations

I'm looking to buy a new book stand that can hold up thick books (as thick as Bernas Consti). The ones I've seen in shoppee/lazada are too flimsy or small for the books that I have right now.

Drop your book stand recos in the comments, ideally yung mabibili online lang. Thank you in advance

Discussions Law school professors who post the midterm scores of their students

Idk baka maarte lang me but it feels kinda weird. Pati rankings? Pati passing rate? Pati ACTUAL NAMES of their students?

:( Sorry na agad if non-issue. Hahahaha.

Advice How to move forward?

Hi. I took the 2025 Bar and didn’t make it on my first attempt.

Ever since January 2026, I haven’t properly grieved nor cried about it. I have been suppressing my emotions.

At present, I feel lost and defeated. I know I can’t stay in this for way too long.

Crowd-sourcing for tips on how to navigate this chapter of life — especially to those who have experienced the same.

Any practical tips on how to move forward and heal will be highly appreciated!

Rant Can’t understand Const 1

Hello. How do you guys study Constitutional Law 1? No matter how hard I try, I just can’t understand it. It’s so difficult to follow. I usually read the codal provision first, then the textbook (Cruz), but I get stuck when I start reading the cases. I just can’t understand how the doctrine is applied, so I’m also having a hard time reciting the cases because I don’t get them either. Someone, please. send help 🫠

Advice Law firm to In house

I've been an associate at a law firm for about 9 months and I'm planning to resign soon. My goal is to move to an in-house role.

Has anyone here landed an in-house position with less than a year of experience? I want to hear how it went or advice on this.

Advice 4L and tired

Is this normal? Kung kailan 4th year na, dun talaga ako napapagod and hindi ko alam kung para sa akin ba based on midterm scores.

I know I should go back to my "why", but I'm so damn tired as a working student. Monday to Friday pagod ka na tapos Saturday and Sunday, buong araw ka pa nasa school. Add pa ng responsibilities sa family.

I'm having a hard time focusing na din pati.

Help.
