Dear School Community,

I am writing to inform you of an incident that occurred today, October 27, 2026. During an investigation of a reported peer conflict between two Smithtown High School West students, building administration was notified that one of the students may have recently posted a picture of a handgun on social media. With this information, building administrators promptly contacted the Suffolk County Police Department for their assistance and a School Resource Officer (SRO) was quickly dispatched to provide support. A search of the student’s backpack was conducted, which resulted in the seizure of an unloaded handgun as well as bullets. The student was promptly arrested without incident. In addition to whatever criminal charges will be brought by law enforcement, the student will face additional consequences levied in accordance with the School District’s Code of Conduct.

It is important to note that we are still investigating this incident, but at this time, we are not aware of any specific threat made by this student to another student, staff member, the Smithtown High School West, or District as a whole. Due to the ongoing investigation and the need to protect student privacy, we are unable to share additional details.

As is always the case, our administrators, security staff and the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) worked together to ensure the collective safety of our school community. We are also very thankful that a Smithtown student made us aware of the social media post which allowed us to act quickly and manage the situation effectively. The old adage “If you see something, say something” was adhered to and we are grateful.

The presence of a weapon in our schools is deeply concerning, and we recognize the fear and uneasiness this incident may raise among our school community. We are taking this matter very seriously. The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority, and we remain committed to ensuring our buildings are safe and secure.

So this was a band out of Long Island somewhere I found on maybe MySpace? I feel like they were an alternative band with autumn or fall in the name. I had a bunch of their songs on my old iPod and it just died and I can’t remember a song lyric or name or anything and want to find them again. Figured I would start here looking for a direction. First-time user of tankless hot water heater / boiler combo unit. I read that I will need annual maintenance. Is it DYI, or I need a professional perform maintenance to avoid warranty issues. Also how much does it usually cost for an approved technician to perform the work?

$5600 mortgage payment in central Nassau.

$4400 to lender, ~$250 insurance, ~$950 taxes.

At 5.75% a paltry ~$900 a month goes to principal (insane, I want to puke).

I’m able to write off the interest. The net effective tax savings is approximately $1300 a month.

So now we got $5600 - $900 principal - $1300 tax savings = $3400 cost.

In 50 months, my house has gained about $160k in equity, or about $3200 a month.

That leaves me $200/month in net negative cost providing I’m able to capture the gains and sell the home at a future date.

Mental gymnastics here because the cash flow sucks but if Long Island keeps up with this equity growth it’s quite possible owning here can make sense if you can swing the monthly burn.

Is anyone else seeing this or am I just hopelessly trying to justify living on Long Island 🙃
