Letter to PA/SA Open Letter To A Former Porn Addict From A Hurting Spouse

⚠️ Trigger warning:

This is a very long post, about 4,000+ words but I wrote it as a form venting therapy.

I am married to a recovering PA who has had trouble supporting me emotionally while suffering from CPTSD.

This only applies to my experiences, so please don’t think I’m saying some points are one size fits all. I wrote it from my perspective, and maybe some of you can identify with my words.

If you read all the way, I thank you.

Here it goes:

“Open letter to a former porn addict, from a hurting spouse:

I don’t communicate with people about my feelings because they never show genuine interest in understanding my point of view. I refuse to be vulnerable and open my heart up to people, only to be disappointed. I’ve had enough negative experiences as a result of doing that to know not to do it again unless the person makes me feel 100% confident that they 1) Genuinely want to understand me, and 2) change their behavior.

This recovery journey has been completely one sided when it comes to understanding. I understand addiction, I understand what is required in recovery, and I understand the psychology of addiction. How? Because although I am not the addict, I chose to research the topic on my own to have a better understanding of it. I have been mentally and emotionally damaged by this situation, made to feel hyper paranoid about simple things like YouTube videos, other women, the public places we go to, what we watch, images, and a million other things I worry myself sick about on a daily basis.

Out of the all the bad experiences I’ve had with people in the past, I thought this would be the one situation, the one person who would show me different. I was wrong about that, completely. In fact, this person has shown me the worst of betrayal of nearly every other person I’ve encountered.

I’ve now seen how a person who claims to love you can also lie to your face. How Men enjoy degrading Women in the worst of ways, have no qualms pressuring Women into sex they don’t want, care nothing about their comfort, their feelings, or their boundaries. How a Man can claim to be a ‘good guy,’ a loving monogamous partner, while secretly pleasuring himself to the images of another Woman. I’ve seen how deep the lies can go. It can go as far as nearly losing ‘the love of your life’ before an actual change is even thought of. It takes the person leaving to get their shit together. And even then, how long will it last? Two months, a year, ten, twenty? I’ve seen countless times on subreddits, Women broken and devastated by discovering their partners infidelity, only to find a new Man sometime later who ‘doesn’t watch porn that much.’ And somehow, this is better.

The jackpot.

An angel amongst men.

That guy is a keeper.

If he was a former drug addict or alcoholic who only drank once a year or snorted a line every few months, would that be okay?

It is not okay, it is never okay, and there is no reason to justify a Man being a relationship and lusting after other Women. That is point of monogamy: To be with, seek for, and love one Woman. And yes, porn, although on a screen, shows real women. Real women who are not your partner.

And even when the former addict starts to show signs of improvement, what also happens frequently is the addict not understanding that the partner has been and will continue to be harmed and emotionally scarred by what she’s been through.

According to studies, it can take 3-5 years for healing to take place and for trust to even be a possibility after last discovery of the habit. Some progress quicker (or slower) than others, but the general consensus is 3-5 years.

And that is not JUST 3-5 years. That is 3-5 years of ongoing recovery and sobriety by the former addict, usually therapy, open communication from the addict to the partner, accountability for their actions, and most importantly, an understanding of and system put into place for when the partner has triggers. Triggers are not just for the addict. Triggers happen for the partner as well. It could be something as simple as a word, an image, a woman walking into the store, a raunchy song on the radio, a racy television ad, a video game advertisement, behaviors that may remind the partner of the day they discovered their partners addiction such as being on the internet for too long, or taking their phone to the bathroom.

What Life Is Like For The Spouse Of A Former Addict

Life for a spouse after porn use or addiction is discovered is forever changed. If you were once a confident woman, that will change. You’re now in a perpetual competition with ever woman you meet. Every woman with a little more or this or that is now a threat, whether you like it or not. It doesn’t mean she actually is one, but in a trauma brain, it is. If you discovered your Husband likes redheads and you’re a blonde, every redhead you see from now on is your Husband’s gal. His fetish, his fantasy, his preferred woman. You’ll avoid certain places to avoid being triggered by seeing an attractive woman you know for a fact your Husband used to ogle. Oh, and that restaurant you and your husband used to go to that you now remember two years back when you caught him staring at another woman’s cleavage? You’re not going there again. And even if you do, you’ll always remember it as the place my Husband shattered my self-esteem. What a pleasant reminder. As a matter of fact, you’ll avoid lots of new things now.

That TV show you used to watch with your Husband only to find out he finds the main character attractive? No longer watched. Every device in your home that can connect to the internet will be chained down and locked immediately. You can’t wait to get home to do that so you’ll never have to worry. God forbid he get a new phone or computer ever again. We’ll lock it down before he can even have a chance to touch it.

Concerts and festivals are no longer fun so we just won’t go anymore. Those places are notorious for scantily clad women and nothing kills the mood (or you’re already crumbling self-confidence) than a crowd of females around you with cleavage and buttocks surrounding your former porn addicted lover. You’ll spend 90% of the time checking to see if he’s checking out someone else. And if he does, we just wasted a hundred bucks on these tickets because we’re going back home in tears.

Sex is also not fun anymore. All it does is remind you of the years of dissatisfaction you had while your husband was knuckles deep in phone fantasies. The sex he wanted, that you didn’t. And it didn’t matter anyways. He wanted what he wanted. It didn’t matter how uncomfortable you clearly looked, or the ten times you said no and he did it anyways. You’re a cum dumpster, remember?

Oh, and your appearance that you used to take so much pride in? Who gives a shit? Not me. Not anymore. Even on your best days, your Husband still found the urge to yank one off at work. Some makeup and kinky sex isn’t going to make your butt bigger or your chest any rounder. You’re nice and all, but you just don’t stack up. You’re not as exciting as the phone girls. Even when you felt sexy and confident, and gave into his sexual demands that one time a few years back, you still aren’t enough. And how could you be? Alexa, and Molly, and Jennifer, and Tasha, and Shaniqua, and a hundred others are right at his fingertips to be used and abused whenever he wants. Oh, and they don’t say no, ever. You do. And that’s just not cool. Boundaries are childish. You should be ‘open minded’ like Tara XXX who does everything, with everyone (for the right price, of course)

So now, everything you loved about yourself isn’t looking so hot anymore. You thought you had nice curves, but not better than hers. You thought your chest was pretty perky, but not as full as theirs. You thought you had a connection that would last a lifetime, but other Women are too enticing. What can you do to be more enticing? I don’t know, maybe do everything he tells you to do sexually even if you don’t like it. Don’t be a prude. Everyone’s doing it and he’ll love you more! Or, he’ll just find someone else to do it. You’re call. Maybe consider some butt implants. You know he likes that, and you’re not quite stacking up. Save up some money and get it done. You want to be attractive, right?

Be more suggestive. Get prettier. Be more adventurous. Do everything he says and he won’t need porn anymore because you’re his everything now. You got the body, the long straight hair he likes, the large bottom, the boobs, and you give into every demand he asks for!

You’re all set.

Now, the good life begins.

Except, it doesn’t.

You can look like Rihanna, Beyoncé, and his favorite porn stars combined and he’ll still cheat and still watch porn. In fact, he could be with a porn star and still watch porn. It’s ironic, and extremely sad, but it’s true. Because I wasn’t the issue in my partner’s addiction, and neither are you.

I was, and still am, and you are, very attractive. Intelligent. Funny. And so are a million other Women and they’ll be put through the same song and dance. No one is safe from the pain of addiction.

Divorces Happen: Here’s One Of The Top Reasons Why:

Why do so many spouses fail? It’s simple really.

A man who does not understand how a partner is affected by addiction is doomed to fail.

Why?

Because while you’re allowing time to assist in her healing, if you’re meeting her suspicion of you or triggered reactions with anger, indifference, or defensiveness: You’ve failed her. You failed to comfort her through her trigger, or her knee jerk reaction to what may have been a simple misunderstanding. You’ve failed to reassure her that it’s OK, that she is safe with you, and that you understand she is being triggered by something and helping her cope with this emotionally until it passes.

So many relationships have failed all because the former addict is not meeting the emotional needs of their partner and helping her through her own recovery. Many a Woman has felt that their partner doesn’t understand their triggers, their ‘overreactions,’ etc. They instead become defensive, and react with facts instead of emotion.

Read these two examples spoken by a former addict to their spouse. In fact, read them twice preferably. Read them out loud to yourself, right now, and tell me what you think:

Response #1: “I understand that you’re upset about/thinking about/triggered by ________ because of the past. You’re right to feel that way. Even though I’m in recovery now and have been doing well, there was a time when I was still in my addiction and hurt you because of it. Now, there’s memories, triggers, and thoughts you’re having as a result of the trauma from my own betrayal of your trust, and I’m so sorry I did that to you. I understand now what it means to be clean, and I’m so happy to be here, and with you through it. You’re worth never doing this ever again, and I wouldn’t put you through that pain again. I do this for myself, yes, but I do it for you too because I love you. I couldn’t imagine losing you to something so stupid and meaningless. I’ll be there for you when you feel this way, and I won’t invalidate how you feel because there’s always a reason you feel this way. Just like I have been triggered by things, you are too. But just know that, you’re safe with me. Always.”

Response #2: “What happened? I don’t understand why that would have caused you to get upset. I mean, I get it, with our past and what has happened. And, I’m sorry. But I’ve been sober for like, a year, I go to my meetings every week, I talk to you, I listen, I hold myself accountable. It’s like nothing I do is good enough. I’m sorry for what has happened in the past, but I can only do what I can now. I don’t expect miracles, but I did expect us to be way further ahead than this…”

Now tell me, which of those responses do you think is going to save a marriage, and which one is most likely to end it?

Also, language matters. Tone matters. You can feel the difference in both responses. The most obvious difference is the selfless, partner focused first response. The second response is self-centered (I, I, I, and YOU aren’t) is so negative and defensive, it’s no wonder many partners close up and leave. Nothing in that response says, ‘I hear you, I’m there for you, your feelings matter.’ Not one bit. It is defensive, frustrated, angry, annoyed, and pointing fingers at the victim, sadly enough. So, let this be a visual lesson of what to say what NOT to say. Language matters.

Jenna and Byron: The Recovering Addict And His Hurting Spouse

Here is another example for you. It’s a story about a couple who have been affected by addiction, the former addicts’ response to her trauma, and how that affected their marriage long term. Read it fully, twice if you need to. It is valuable. Take what lessons you can from it:

Jenna and Byron have been together for ten years, four of them riddled with trust issues as a result of Byron’s former use of pornography and masturbation. Jenna always felt that her and Byron were soulmates: Two people who loved each other, laughed every chance they got, understood each other, and above all: trusted one another. Unfortunately, Jenna realized her relationship was not what she thought it was. One day, she asked Byron for his phone to google search a local restaurant they planned to have their anniversary dinner. Byron seemed hesitant to pass his phone along to her, something that made her a little suspicious. She took Byron’s phone and began to head to google. As she typed in the first letter of the restaurant, ‘M’ she saw Byron’s recent search history. Most of the links were searched for and viewed less than two days ago. Without going into detail, Jenna discovered Byrons’ internet porn usage and sexual preferences.

Since that day, Jenna no longer felt like herself. She began to be overly critical of her appearance, so much so that she considered plastic surgery to feel more confident in her body and become the fantasy woman she felt Byron really wanted. She cringed when Byron would touch her or look at her lustfully which caused their sex life to become passionless and nearly nonexistent. She became depressed and their relationship began to deteriorate. She no longer wanted to have sex with Byron. All she could imagine is him thinking of the Women she saw on his phone and saved to his photo album.

She felt the marriage was over and there was nothing left to salvage. “If he loves me, why is he pleasuring himself to other Women behind my back? He clearly isn’t attracted to me if that’s how he spends his time. Why do I even bother? I can’t stack up to those plastic women he gets off to. I don’t have what they have, so why the hell is he even with me? I should leave him to have his phone fantasies while I still have a shred of self-esteem. I don’t even know who he is anymore. He’s…a liar, and a deceiver, and a creep for doing this in the first place. Everything I’ve ever felt for him, and how I thought he felt about me is gone.”

It took Jenna over a year to even come to terms with her husband’s addiction and lies. They slept in separate rooms and barely spoke to each other unless absolutely necessary. She would even stay in hotel rooms or spend the night with friends as the more she was around him, the angrier and sadder she became. During this time, Byron came clean about his addiction and began seeking help. He attended SA meetings twice a week, and even developed a relationship with a Man who was ten years clean who became his accountability partner. He read books on addiction, developed a plan for keeping himself clean, and joined online support groups.

Months went by and Jenna noticed a change in Byron. He became more expressive, more caring, open, honest, and had no issues showing Jenna his phone history and letting her know where he was and what he did during the day. Jenna was happy to see a change, and somewhat hopefully for the future of their relationship, but the wound was still fresh. She knew that trust wasn’t there, not by a long shot, and even a year into his recovery, she was still as angry as she was the day she discovered his habit.

Although Byron was sober, in recovery, and doing all he felt he could to prove she could trust him for good, Jenna wasn’t buying it. Their entire relationship was affected by the addiction and she missed out on the love and connection she could have had with Byron if he sought help from the get go. She was angry for being deceived, saddened that the dynamic of their relationship would never be the same after this betrayal, and even more saddened that the man she fully opened her heart to lied to her. All while reaping the benefits of her loyalty, intimacy, and friendship she gave to him freely, and honestly.

Jenna was slowly starting to develop trust in Byron. Although she was still suffering because of the addiction, she was relieved to know he was going down the right path. But there was a problem. Although in recovery, Byron repeatedly neglected to do one thing: He understood his addiction, but he never understood the severity of how that affected his wife, and how to deal with that.

And I don’t mean she was sad and hurt and angry. That’s surface level explanation. He didn’t understand she no longer was confident in her body, and as a result, chose not to go to certain places where she felt there would be a lot of Women there, or that she stopped watching most of her favorite television shows while he was around in fear of a scene possibly triggering her, and him. Or, that she considered getting breast implants and had a secret savings account just for the procedure. She suddenly stopped inviting her girlfriends to their home because he may be attracted to their body type.

That Jenna would have thoughts of the betrayal pop into her head and suddenly her mood would change seemingly out of the blue. Or that Jenna would be so afraid of him relapsing that she would make herself sick with worry (not figuratively, but literally sick to her stomach thinking about him betraying her again, finding links and images in his phone that she’ll be left to remember for the rest of her life)

Byron didn’t understand her. And even worse, he didn’t seek to understand her. And even worse than that, he made her feel at fault when these triggers would happen.

One day Jenna and Byron were on their way to the post office to mail Christmas cards to their families. While at a red light, a group of Women standing at the cross walk began to walk to the other side of the street, right in front of their truck. Jenna took a quick look at two of the Women and was immediately triggered.

One of the Women was young, likely in her early twenties. She had long auburn hair in braids, a low-cut tank top, and tight blue jeans. The other Woman, who also looked to be in her twenties, followed beside her in an equally revealing top and green shorts with platform sandals. Jenna could feel herself becoming self-conscious and upset at the sight of the scantily clad Women. She tried looking in the corner of her eye at Byron to see if he was reacting in any way to the Women. Byron unconsciously looked in their direction for about a second and turned his head, but this was enough to trigger Jenna further. She hated that they were even there, and that Byron even saw them there at all. She become quiet and Byron noticed a few minutes later. When Jenna mentioned the women, Byron reacted defensively. He began to go on a tangent about how well his recovery was going and how things in their relationship has changed and she shouldn’t still be reacting that way over a ‘simple woman walking by.’

As expected, this made Jenna feel worse.

She felt even more insecure about the situation, and had no desire to even discuss further how she felt. It seemed meaningless, after all. Here she was being triggered by an unexpected situation, and instead of comforting her, he took that sensitive moment to talk about himself, his recovery, all while making her feelings seem small and petty, as if there was no reason in the world, she was reacting this way. That was the time for Byron to make Jenna feel safe, and he failed to do that. Byron failed his Wife in a huge way, and sadly, that wouldn’t be the last time.

For another two years into his recovery, Byron continued to react similarly to Jenna’s pain and triggers. I’m not a porn addict nor have I been a recovering addict, but I can imagine it sucks to think that even if you’re doing the right thing, it seems to go unnoticed. The mistake is thinking that your progress is not being noticed. It is. Daily.

But, there’s one part of recovery that former addicts fail to realize. You doing ‘the right thing’ is one part of the equation. And ‘doing the right thing’ has nothing to do with your partner. When someone is hurting, the last thing they want to hear is you talking about yourself. Since when did a person’s pain become a time to go on a spiel about your success, and why their feelings are irrational because you’re doing so well and they should try harder to move past it because it’s been like a year and you just need to trust and change your attitude and…

Yeah. I guarantee you that’s exactly what your partner is hearing, whether you said those exact words or not. All they hear is: My partner doesn’t care to support me in my time of weakness. My feelings are not valid to him, and I can no longer rely on him to be there for me. His recovery is his concern: My feelings are just in the way.

And as you can imagine, Jenna and Byron eventually divorced after nearly fifteen years of marriage.

It’s really a shame, but could have been avoided completely.

The betrayal isn’t what caused their marriage to end in divorce. It was the lack of understanding on the side of the addict. Had Byron taken a genuine interest in learning about the effects of addiction on partners and how to truly support her, there may have been hope for them. But with Jenna feeling abandoned by her Husband and made to feel that her healing should have expectations of time, she felt rushed, misunderstood, and her emotional needs were not being met. She loved Byron enough to be patient and understanding during his journey to recovery, even after devastated by her betrayal. But Byron didn’t offer her the same courtesy, and that is what led to their demise.

She was already having to cope with supporting her Husband and coming to terms with how she has changed as a result of the betrayal, all while accepting that the dynamic of her relationship never be the same. But even in recovery, Byron didn’t learn that his Wife also needed support. Through the seemingly ‘irrational’ outbursts, he could have met her insecurity with patience and understanding.

During these moments of weakness, it is not the time to put the focus on you. Ever. That is the mistake so many addicts make. It’s not about you. It’s about your partner. She doesn’t want to hear that you’ve been in recovery for a year. She doesn’t want to hear that you’re doing way better than your buddies. She doesn’t want to hear that she shouldn’t be triggered by anything anymore because your recovery is going so well. When she is triggered, you let her know you understand how that triggered her. Be beside her and let her know what she’s feeling is understandable. Don’t undermine her pain. Unless you’re looking to destroy the already nonexistent trust you have AND let her know her feelings are wrong, go for it. But if you want to make this work, do the opposite.

In case you need bullet points, here you go:

Triggers will happen for her. They are inevitable. Understand this. And yes, it will be something as simple as a photo or a two second ad on a video. Nothing is too small or off limits.

When she is upset, validate that feeling. And if you don’t understand, don’t say ‘I don’t understand.’ ASK how that triggered her. If she’s not comfortable saying so, that’s normal. Move on to…

Telling her you understand she is being triggered by something that reminds her of your past behavior.

Follow up by tactfully explaining that she’s safe with you now and she doesn’t have to worry. (Now if this is a blatant lie and you’re not in recovery or confident about maintaining sobriety, don’t even bother reading the rest of the bullet points. You should be honest and allow her to stay, or go.)

Express genuine empathy. You’re so sorry that she’s still hurting from this, but she is safe with you. That cannot be stressed enough (If it’s actually true)

Engage her in an activity you can both do together that is enjoyable, like a game, a walk in the park, your favorite restaurant (Don’t offer her sex or any kind of physical intimacy here unless she directly requests it. The last thing on her mind when triggered is having sex with you, trust me)

Or better yet, do something nice for her when she’s triggered! Make dinner, clean up the house, run her a bath, Light some candles to add some happy atmosphere to the room, buy her a slice of her favorite cake. Talking is nice, but putting some of that niceness into action is even better. Make her feel appreciated.

DO. NOT. USE. LANGUAGE. THAT. INSINUATES. HER. TRIGGERS. ARE. WRONG.

DO NOT make the conversation about yourself. If you’re saying ‘I’ more than a few times, stop. This moment is about her. Not you.

Learn and ask what makes her feel safe. Does talking make her feel safe, an accountability app, a phone call when you get to where you’re going? If it makes her feel safe, do it. Every day. Not just when she’s mad or she’ll think you’re only doing it out of obligation.

Understand that anger is a secondary emotion. There is no such thing as anger. Anger covers up primary emotions, which are usually fear, insecurity, and emotional pain. She’s feeling all of this. So, she told you to fuck off and leave? She’s scared you’ll fail her again. She called you an idiot? She’s hurt by what you’ve done to her and insults you verbally to release the pain, while in turn, hurting you. It’s not right, but neither is betraying your spouse with addiction. It’s not about right or wrong. Trauma just is.

Do not leave your spouse when she’s hurting. I don’t care if she’s being an asshole, called you a name, or told you off. Trauma responses can be irrational. It doesn’t matter. Love her through it anyways. If you need to go take a shot of whiskey to come back to her calmly or yell in the car and come back, do it. (I don’t condone drinking, but you got to do what you got to do)

It’s that simple.

I hope that today, tomorrow, and for however long it takes for your amazing spouse or partner to heal from your betrayal is done with love, understanding, and patience. It can be done. Patience and understanding are what your partner needs.

To be honest, you’ve already done enough damage to her as it is, some of which may be irreversible. She didn’t ask to be thrust into your addiction. The least you can do is make it your job to support her in every way you can.

No blaming, no self-centered talk, no factual arguments (I’ve been in recovery for _, I’ve been doing __, etc.), no defensiveness, and no abandoning her when the conversation gets rough.

Seek to understand her pain. Listen. Be patient.

She’s hurting.

Yes, still.

Even years later.

And I don’t care if you’re going to SA meetings every day, reading books on addiction during lunch, punching porn addicts in the face until they get sober, or threw your smartphone over a cliff and never replaced it.

The best way to repay your partner is not only by remaining sober and in recovery (the bare minimum) but also, to make her feel heard, safe, understood, and for God’s sake, make her feel she made the right decision in giving your relationship a second chance.

Don’t make her regret it.”

ᴀᴍ ɪ ᴄʀᴀᴢʏ Therapist enabling him?

• Upvotes

My PA came to me the other day to talk about his therapy session because he’s trying to be more open with me. The therapist is a female CSAT. Two things that she told him didn’t sit right with me.

He’s not responsible for my anger, and it’s not his job to make me feel safe.

I feel like both are completely wrong and fucked up? I’m not sure if she meant them differently than the way he’s paraphrasing but it made me upset. The only thing I can think of is that she means it’s my responsibility to regulate myself when I’m triggered. I told him I didn’t like it and he didn’t seem to have much insight as to what exactly she meant.

ɴᴇᴡ ᴜsᴇʀ - 𝟷sᴛ ᴘᴏsᴛ After 38 Years of Marriage, I Finally Walked Away

• Upvotes

My husband and I have been married for 38 years and have three adult children. He truly was the love of my life, and I never imagined I would find myself in this position.
Porn has been an issue in our marriage for what feels like most of our relationship. It took me a long time to understand what was really going on and how deeply it was affecting me and our marriage. He promised me many times that he would stop and get counseling, but he never followed through. Instead, he continued doing it behind my back.
The repeated lies, broken promises, and secrecy have slowly destroyed my self-esteem and the trust I once had in him. I kept giving him chances because I loved him and wanted to save our marriage. I believed the man I fell in love with was still there, and I held on to the hope that things would change.
About two weeks ago, I finally reached my breaking point and left. It has been the hardest thing I have ever done. Walking away from 38 years of marriage, the man I loved, and the life we built together is heartbreaking.
I’ve started working with a therapist, and it has helped me so much already. I’m beginning to understand how much of myself I lost trying to save this marriage. I look back and sometimes hate myself for giving him so many chances, for staying so long, and for hoping things would be different. I know I shouldn’t blame myself, but those feelings are still there.
I have an appointment with a divorce attorney on Thursday. Saying that out loud is still surreal to me.
Part of me wishes I had done this years ago, when I was younger and had more years ahead of me. But I’m trying to remind myself that it’s not too late to choose myself, heal, and find peace.
I’m sharing this because I know I’m not the only woman who has stayed for years, hoping promises would turn into real change.
For those of you who have walked away from a long marriage because of repeated lies, broken promises, and pornography, how did you get through the grief? How did you stop looking back and regretting all the years you stayed?
I’m hurting, but for the first time in a long time, I’m finally doing something for myself.

ɴᴇᴡ ᴜsᴇʀ - 𝟷sᴛ ᴘᴏsᴛ Just found everything out, I’m in shock

My PA and I have been together for 15 years, married for 9. We’ve been having some significant financial difficulties and I started to go through our bills. The bills have always been something he’s been in charge of handling, but things have been spiraling and I decided to get involved. I can only see two years back but there are countless charges to multiple porn sites. A couple purchases on OF, over $300 each in one day. I feel absolutely sick to my stomach. I know there’s probably more that I haven’t even discovered but this alone has shaken me to my core. The financial difficulties have multiple causes, I would not say that the porn is the sole reason we are in debt but while we’ve been struggling to put food on the table, he’s continued spending 100s on OF.

I feel like I don’t even know who I’ve been living with all these years. I’m nauseated and disgusted.

ᴀᴅᴠɪᴄᴇ ᴡᴀɴᴛᴇᴅ Can a man really change his porn habits

Hi everyone. I really need some advice.

I've been wondering if a man can genuinely change his relationship with pornography without going to therapy, especially if he doesn't even believe he has an addiction.

I've talked to my partner about this several times, and he keeps telling me that he's never felt like an addict. He insists that quitting porn was actually very easy for him. But I can't help feeling that the only reason he stopped is because I've been constantly monitoring him, almost obsessively, to a point that I know isn't healthy for me either.

What really bothers me is that he refuses to acknowledge that he might have an addiction. I feel like he's being incredibly self-centered and dismissive of how much this has affected me.

I've been crying and arguing with him almost every day because I keep insisting that the first step toward real change is admitting that he has a problem. But whenever I bring it up, he sometimes responds sarcastically, makes jokes, or seems to mock what I'm saying. I honestly don't know what to think anymore.

I feel exhausted because I don't want to spend the rest of my life monitoring someone just to feel safe in my relationship. I want to believe that he's changing because he genuinely understands the problem, not just because I'm watching him.

Can someone truly change without therapy or acknowledging an addiction? And how do I get him to understand why this matters so much to me?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's been through something similar. I desperately need some advice.

ɴᴇᴡ ᴜsᴇʀ - 𝟷sᴛ ᴘᴏsᴛ Advice needed

Sorry if this is a little too personal. I’m trying to rebuild closeness and intimacy with my SO, but I find myself comparing our moments together, or even the pleasure I feel, to things that have happened in the past. I wish I could just erase those thoughts and enjoy being close to the person I love. Instead, my mind wanders, and I start wondering… Did you do this with his AI bot? Did you say these same things to his fantasy characters? Have you shared this kind of moment before? I just want to be present and enjoy what we have without all the noise in my head.

ᴀᴅᴠɪᴄᴇ ᴡᴀɴᴛᴇᴅ Feeling triggered

My bf has been struggling with porn on and off since he was around 12. We’ve been together about two ish years. He white knuckled it for a year then gave in and started watching again. We broke up because he felt so out of control and couldn’t bring himself to tell me. We were apart for six months and now we’ve been back together for seven. He told me about it when we started talking again as to start fresh. I decided it was worth working out and staying.
I’m not okay with porn so when he messes up I tend to freak out and explode so to say. My friends and family say I don’t overreact but idk. I definitely don’t create a safe space for him. He messed up a few days ago but told me (I did have to ask) and it wasn’t naked women but it was just up to that point. Since that day hes joined a support group- talked to his family- set locks on his phone at certain times of night- and has sat with me and comforted me while I sit in silence sad for hours. He’s trying to do more so it doesn’t happen again. I’m saying this because I can tell he’s trying. Unlike a lot of People who say they are but they aren’t or who lie.

His brothers talk about women all the time and it’s incredibly uncomfortable. They’re older than my bf so he looks up to them. They talk about girls Like they’re a prize that can acquire. They also make randomly subtle jokes about BDSM and shit like that. It just feels weird. . One of them called me the girls name of who he went out with the night before… anyways they were talking about this tv show who has this character that my bf looked up and relapsed for. I felt so uncomfortable “ just hearing about it even though it wasn’t in a sexual way. I had to “go to the bathroom” to avoid it. Since then I’ve felt very anxious and distant. I’m triggered and idk how to handle it in a healthy way. Could you guys give me some ways you handle when you’re triggered by the betrayal?

ᴅᴇsᴛʀᴏʏᴇᴅ He uninstalled truple app

I can’t believe this is my life.

Discovered my husband secret basement early September, he confessed his stash, his porn browsing every day for sometimes hours and masturbation along the way while we had no intimacy, it was ED over ED. Lies and gaslight minimize defensiveness stonewall…. And all the classic addict behavior.

Since he told me everything, he wanted to be accountable, installed truple himself and got some books to be a better person but the roller coaster is insane. I want to support him but I can’t I’m so hurt. I need my healing and he needs his. He’s so needy and wants me to confirm that I want this relationship and want to keep being in it. I just can’t. I can barely take care of myself as is. I’m so devastated.

We had argument about seeing a CSAT for him, it’s my boundaries to even consider moving forward but for him he has not addiction. His behavior is totally normal. He is not allowing me to masturbate, check my belongings to see if they moved aka my dildo and retaliated by uninstalling truple.

We’re married and have a house. I don’t think I can take this anymore. Controlling intimidation and retaliation are new. I don’t recognize him at all. Who is that person?! What is going on? My life is a nightmare right now.

ᴀᴅᴠɪᴄᴇ ᴡᴀɴᴛᴇᴅ Is my intuition totally off?

My PA husband has been clean for over a year now. Yesterday, I walked past the open door to our bathroom and saw him checking himself out in the mirror in his underwear (I think new something he doesn’t usually wear, but I’ve seen it in the laundry), and had a huge boner. When he realized I saw him, he scrambled to put his shorts on.

I’m pretty certain he wasn’t masturbating or anything. He had run upstairs to get changed to go for a run while his parents were over and both our kids including our new baby around. Of course I got triggered and he assured me he was thinking about and turned on by the thought of us doing naughty things that we had been talking about recently. He said he was checking himself out to see how he’d look for me that that underwear and was super embarrassed that I found him doing that. That he’s been self conscious about his body etc. then ended up saying a lot of other reassuring things about us that made me feel really good at first.

Now it’s the middle of the night, and I have that nagging feeling he’s not being truthful. His reaction to the whole thing felt so familiar to how he reacted to things in the past that I had to pry the truth out of him after days of confrontation. My gut tells me there’s something that was going on , maybe he was fantasizing about something to turn him on?

He swears to this day that not only has he not watched porn since dday, but he also has never thought about or fantasized about what he used to watch in these past 1.5 years. I don’t know. Something feels so off.

On one hand, his explanation to what he was doing is reasonable. But on the other hand, the way he reacted is sending red flags like crazy given my intuition and knowing how he’s reacted when hiding something in the past. I’ll never know the truth of what was in his mind if he doesn’t tell me …

ɴᴇᴡ ᴜsᴇʀ - 𝟷sᴛ ᴘᴏsᴛ What do you make of my partners behaviour?

Been struggling with some of my partners behaviours for a long time and looking for advice. For context he’s 39m and I’m 35f. He’s totally fit and healthy, eats well, no depression or drinking/smoking/drugs or meds. For all it’s worth, we have a great relationship.

About 7 years ago in the talking stage of our relationship, he was hyper sexual, describing lots of fantasies and desires. In reality though it could not be more different. He rarely seems interested in sex. Maybe once a week at best. This has always been the case but gradually declining and we can go weeks without any interest from him. He never compliments my body or comments that I look good. Sex is only ever with lights off, and follows the same script. There’s never any foreplay for me unless I ask, which is embarrassing and degrading in itself and makes sex painful and uncomfortable as I’m not ready. no kissing or touching me and I’m basically jackhammered until he finishes. This is either very quick or takes forever. I’m feeling really used and confused at how someone who clearly loves me dearly outside of the bedroom acts like that inside it.

Other things that are strange and always have been are never ever talking about sex ever, super locked down on all devices, I don’t have access to anything. Phone and laptop is Face ID protected, folders are meticulously arranged and hidden, phone is always on him, vpn, incognito and DuckDuckGo go for everything.

Early on in the relationship I discovered he was following really suspect accounts on irrelevant platforms and commenting on woman’s suggestive posts. When confronted this was promptly deleted from shared things like tv but not on his phone. This was all dismissed as old and no idea who they were. Long bathroom breaks which seem unnecessary etc, frequent and often in middle of the night.

I have brought up lack of intimacy before and he’s been very sympathetic to how it’s affected my self esteem but said its absolutely nothing to do with me or anything I’ve done. Nothing has changed and I’m feeling about as low as ever in myself. I’m sick with worry and no idea how to even broach this topic.

I’m terrified that it is genuinely nothing, he’s just a private and organised person with a low libido and if I bring it up I look like an absolute psycho.

Please help as I don’t know what to do.

sᴀᴅ ASMR

We have been having a lot of back and forth, and im struggling to fully let go. He is mad at himself today, he claims, but takes it out on me. We are not living together. I see he's been on youtube tonight so i log in to check the hx. He's watching asmr of clearly attractive women "tingly sleep noises" etc. I scroll back and see on august 31 he was listening to genital mouth noise asmr. He was been STEADFAST that he has not "watched porn". Im just so sick of it. I know i'm a catch and he is a loser but I want him to want me. Its pathetic.

edit to add i just re read it and its "gentle mouth sounds". my anxiety is insane. i still think listening to an attractive woman making gentle mouth sounds is not the play when you have a porn addiction.

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT Reminder on Pop-Culture Topics and Addicts Playing Sexualized Video Games

Hi all! Just a quick refresher and reminder about pop-culture topics for our new and old members. We are all aware that a certain celebrity keeps popping up half-clothed everywhere and that a super-sexualized video game is being released soon. I don't think that's brand new information to anyone here. Because of the notoriety of both of those things, members are posting or commenting about them almost daily and we are removing those posts and comments.

Why? Because those topics, unfortunately, are incredibly popular right now. So when people who are looking for porn, nudes, or leaks of those topics search for them on google or reddit, we do NOT want our sub showing up in their search results. Generally speaking, someone who is actively searching for topics like that is not going to share the opinions of the majority of our members here. And unfortunately, many of the people searching for those kinds of topics would have no problem humiliating, harassing, and further traumatizing our members.

We are strict in moderating content like this because we do NOT want trolls following you into your other reddit comments and trying to dox you online. We also don't want them sharing your posts and comments in pro-porn spaces, encouraging their members to come brigade the sub and harass you all.

We do our best to moderate posts and comments to stop things like that happening. But we are four people who are simply volunteers and have full-time jobs and families of our own. Insinuating that we need to do a better job moderating so that you can post whatever you want with no care to the rest of this community is incredibly disrespectful. And all the moderating we can do here is useless when some troll follows you into a baking sub or a local restaurant sub and replies to all of your comments with 'OP is crazy because she doesn't allow her husband to watch porn' or 'OP controls her husband's phone because she's insecure about herself.' I'm assuming most of you don't want your post/comment history following you all over the internet.

And we understand that some of you would have no problem engaging with trolls and doing the same to them. But that is not what most of our members want their experience in a support sub like this to be. We're not going to open them up to harassment from others so that you can provoke trolls. If you have a problem with that, this is not the sub for you.

*****

Finally, I'm going to be crystal clear here. If you have an addict who says he is in recovery, but is insisting on playing video games with nudity or watching movies/tv with nudity, or seeking out commercials with nudity, he is NOT in recovery. That is not recovery...I don't care what excuses the addict gives. An addict in true recovery will willingly give up that favorite video game series they started playing when they were a teen. An addict in true recovery won't finish the last two seasons of a tv show or the final movie in a series because D-day and recovery started before they came out.

Because those video games and movies are NOT worth more to them than their sobriety. Period.

Any addict who tries to argue that with you is not in recovery. They might be white-knuckling sobriety, they might be abstinent from porn, they might even be going to meetings and therapy, but they are NOT in true recovery. They are placing video games and tv shows or movies above their recovery. They are telling you that is more important to them than their recovery. That is NOT recovery.

It doesn't matter if you also play those games or watch those shows and love them and want to play/watch them. You are not an addict. Your brain does not respond the way an addict's does to that sort of media. If you think they're great and worthwhile entertainment, that's fine...enjoy them. But it's not content than an addict should be engaging with if he's truly in recovery.

*****

It really sucks that this sort of media is still being released all the time and that people have figured out all sorts of ways to make it even more sexualized and disgusting, we get it. We know how much it hurts to have a partner choose a video game over you. Or seek out commercials over connection with you. We are here to support you as you deal with those feelings and try to figure out how to respond to your partner or what you want to do next. But this is not the place to share so many specific details and names that it brings those things even more popularity and activates pro-porn trolls who love to harass anyone who doesn't agree with them. Thank you for your understanding.

He won't stop spending money on making Ai porn of other women. He recently crossed a line and made content of his female coworker. I want to leave but we have a toddler and mortgage together. The mortgage contract will be hard to break without ruining our credit. I've been so stressed that I'm constantly getting chest/heart pain. We fight twice a week and occasionally get physical. Living with my family would only be worse because they're raging bipolars. Fighting for my life right now 😁.

ᴅᴇsᴛʀᴏʏᴇᴅ Husband wants to change now….feels too late

Warning this is ALOT!!!! I apologize in advanced. I’m debating divorcing my husband, but leaning towards yes. We are 26f and 28m, have been together for 6 years at this point. When it was easier he was a great man to me, respectful, loving, and we clicked so well. However as life went on and we got married and had our son he just spiraled worse and worse. He always had a problem with porn and I did catch him flirting casually with other girls, but he made a commitment to change and it seemed like he did for a LONG time. Now he’s put me through so much that I am ready to throw my hands up and be done. I’m going to put all my bullets below that I used for our first counseling session since the separation, which was triggered by me discovering a YEARS long emotional affair (confiding in eachother, sentimental paragraphs, flirtatious jokes, voice chats all night through the game, etc.) and that he spiraled with his porn addiction again.

-consistently fantasized about specific women becoming fixated, and consuming not only sexual content but other intimate videos, falling asleep to them at night (asmr)

-using AI roleplay apps while I was freshly postpartum

-choosing gaming over his family because it feels
easy, playing for hours every night and even day when I was pregnant/postpartum begging for more affection and bonding time

-began a secret online “friendship” and emotional affair with a 23 year old girl through the game during the hardest most vulnerable stages of my life, even suggesting flying to Ohio to visit her, while ignoring my needs for affection and support at home

-choosing vaping over his family and health, even arguing with me about vaping in front of his own child

-would lash out when I needed help with the baby while postpartum, even as far as slamming doors, hitting walls and calling me a fucking bitch while ripping the baby gate off the bed

-trying to convince me nothing was wrong while I was postpartum, making me feel bad for wanting to return to the hospital, when in fact i needed intervention before stroking or seizure due to postpartum preeclampsia

-berating me for speaking to a guy friend one time platonically during this time threatening to leave even screaming at me while holding our son, meanwhile you had been secretly talking to this girl consistently for months at this point and continued to.

-being complacent and unmotivated in life and career over promiser and underachiever

-consistently lying to me about your porn using, even when I asked you calmly and even said I would be okay with it as long as you can create boundaries with searching for specific women. I even tried to appease you sexually by attempting to reenact your fantasies, sending photos videos etc for years.

-your addiction going as far as seeing a girl at work and choosing porn based off her appearance.

-all while hiding these one sided girlfriends and emotional affair online you were preaching how terrible porn use is and bragged about how you only had eyes for me and was proud of himself, even gaslighting me when I would question this

-not being able to own your secrets and admit, unless I find it first

Yeah. Reflecting it all back it sounds obvious to leave, but in between these moments of despair we shared beautiful memories together, he would make active commitments to change but eventually folded and went back to these vices. He is finally attending his own therapist and doing couples therapy with me cause after these last discoveries, he realizes I’m done. The thing is I always told myself I would end up this women, divorced with a child. I also think it will devastate me if he really does change and I divorce him, as I’ve worked so hard to try to build him up. At the same time how can you ever trust someone who lies so easily? I also hate the person I’ve become throughout all the tribulations, I wasn’t able to eat for days and sobbed so hard my eyes were swollen, it was awful. I couldn’t stop comparing myself to these random women he would obsess over, and not to brag but I’m pretty attractive! Its not like I let myself go, so why was it so hard for him to not fantasize about other CONSTANTLY. He also seems committed right now, he finally admitted in therapy that this addiction has turned him into a bad husband and narcissist, he threw away his PS5 to show he’s no longer choosing gaming over us and our family, which he did for so many years. Idk I’m lost, I hate that this is my life right now and the hard decision is up to me. We were doing so well as of late before I discovered all this, I was finally becoming more comfortable in my own skin and now I am back to ground zero. I hate that he prioritized this girl on a game over me, these girls on a screen over me, when he should be making me feel special:(

ʙʀᴇᴀᴋ-ᴜᴘ ᴘᴏsᴛ Update: we broke up

The last time i wrote here was 10 months ago. I can safely say i broke up with him after multiple fights, multiple times trying to fix things. It never got fixed. He was still using and still calling me names. I decided it was better to be separated for other reasons too, but the porn thing was a real deal-breaker. We have been broken up since August.

It gets better but because i am finally in a place where i am respected and porn is not a thing at all. My current partner knows about what happened with my ex, he doesn't use porn. I have access to his phone, although i told him i trust him, he made sure that i know that i can trust him on that.

For anyone here who wants a sign, it gets better. Be somewhere you're respected.

ɴᴇᴡ ᴜsᴇʀ - 𝟷sᴛ ᴘᴏsᴛ I am numb

Hello everyone, first time poster and long time lurker. Unfortunately throughout the years I’ve coupled with many a PA..I just thought that I had finally found someone who loved me for me. But right now everything feels like a sham. I’ve been reading through the resource library as well as posts here since I found out.

On Monday I was on both of our devices as we own a business together and was calculating our total earnings from that weekend. I go to the browser to login to my PayPal only to find a random incognito tab open. My heart drops, and I think that I’m going to be sick. When I finally get the courage to open it, it’s a private porn account where him and hundreds of other men post leaked nudes and OF content. Not just that but he has folders of hundreds of thousands of women labeled and organized into files. I manically scroll through everything, finding that he chats with other men to find these things too. I just broke down and began recording and screenshotting everything between sobs.

He doesn’t notice me violently sobbing beside him in bed, fast asleep blissfully unaware of what I’ve found.

When confronted about it he just sits there and says he’s awful and gross and feels ashamed for doing it behind my back. I ask how he’s using it, he claims he’s only using it to counteract PIED…

We’ve had issues with him remaining an erection many times throughout our relationship. And each time has always felt like something I’m doing wrong. Only to find out the three years together, he’s been using me as a warm hole? I don’t know what to feel or think.

I’ve been unable to eat much of anything, sleep is almost impossible, I feel like I’m losing my mind.

We live with his mom, we are always together, we run a business together, what now?

He’s been to one SSA meeting, and apparently communicating to other PA on here and other subs for advice but I just…I am at a loss.

I don’t feel loved, I don’t feel safe, and every conversation feels like he just thinks I’m having outbursts rather than understanding that I feel like my past three years feel like a lie. My mental health has been faltering and I’ve been journaling but talk therapy doesn’t cut it for me (been in therapy for 16 years). I welcome any advice and support. Please feel free to reach out if you have any links or any help!

sᴀᴅ Struggling

I'm sitting here, my face is sore and brusied from having filler and botox in a feeble attempt to look more attractive. I feel hideous and I'm so depressed. I'm 2 years our from DDay and I feel no better. I'm 53 and my heart is just broken. It sounds awful to say but most days I feel like dying is the only way out. I have many regrets, I wish I had made our lives more exciting so maybe he wouldn't have done the things he's done. I also feel scared that if we do split up he will then be unleashed to do all the things that staying with me stops him from doing. It shouldn't matter but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't hurt.

I also know that he likes and has fantasised about a couple of women he sees out and about on his job. He doesn't know I know. They are both married with children but I do think that if one of them gave him the chance he would betray me. Do I confront him about it? He would just deny it and say he's just being friendly.

It just all feels so hopeless. 25 years together and I sit here so quiet and sad.

I wish I could just dissappear.

ɴᴇᴡ ᴜsᴇʀ - 𝟷sᴛ ᴘᴏsᴛ Lied again

hi guys. I caught my bf watching porn a year ago despite him saying he didn’t do that kind of stuff and us having an agreement not to. I ended up forgiving him, his excuses were that he felt insecure about my own past before him as i’m more experienced, and that he had an addiction to it before me he was still struggling with. I was really hurt by the lying, and him watching other women broke my self esteem to this day and he knows that. I ended up forgiving him and told myself if it happened again i’d end things.

Well a year later, last night i found it again, he said he’s only watched it twice since the last time. I’m honestly just at a dead end. We live together now, and he even reassured me beforehand that he’d especially not want to watch anything since we’d be together all the time (we were ldr last year). But we moved in tg in July and he watched it in August. I have probably asked him 3 times since then if he’s watched it and each time he has lied to my face, even making me feel bad for asking at all.

I honestly just don’t know what to do. He’s taken full responsibility and doesn’t understand why he did it apparently. He wanted to propose to me next year but I just can’t imagine it right now. I wish we didn’t live together because I think I would’ve broken up with him by now if we didn’t. I don’t have anywhere else to go, again if I did i’d leave. Honestly considering faking this all til our lease is up or I find somewhere else to go. I had hope the last time we could restore trust and I could feel better about myself, but all the progress is down the drain and I hate myself more than ever.

ɴᴇᴡ ᴜsᴇʀ - 𝟷sᴛ ᴘᴏsᴛ Found out about my husband’s PA 5 months into marriage. Still devastated a year later

Hi everyone. I’m sorry but this post is going to be really long. I think I need to get everything off my chest because I’ve been keeping this to myself for far too long, and I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore. I found out about my husband’s PA five months into our marriage. It’s been a year and a half of dealing with the aftermath, and I haven’t told a single person in my real life about any of this. I’m a foreigner living in a different country and now a different state from where I used to live, my friends and family are scattered all over the world, and I don’t have anyone close to me who will understand. I’ve basically spent the last year and a half discussing this with my husband, crying in bathrooms, and trying to make sense of what happened to us. Finding this community and reading other people’s experiences has made me feel less alone. I hope I can be active here and share updates, because I desperately need a community that understands and openly talks about this topic.

After we got married, I started noticing problems with our sex life. He struggled to get hard, and I eventually developed a low sex drive myself because I felt disconnected. Looking back, I subconsciously suspected he was thinking about other women during our intimate moments. He also never really put much care into aftercare.

When I finally discovered what was going on, I found evidence of his behavior going back throughout our relationship. It wasn’t just conventional porn. There were softcore music videos, Instagram reels, gym content, and random women from our social circles. He sexualized people we knew, people from his past, and even random women in pictures I HAD posted myself. He had gone back to look up high school friends and other women he knew. He had stalked old friends of his, including some of my friends he found attractive, and masturbated to them. He even ended up asking one of the girls we knew in college for videos of her dancing. He used Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat for much of this. He even had a secret Instagram account whose algorithm was filled with sexually suggestive videos. I didn’t find much involving couples or anything like that. It was predominantly individual women, often multiple, with the kinds of races and body types that were different from mine. The worst part is that I was the one who introduced him to K-pop. I used to listen to girl groups myself, and he ended up using their performances and dancing as softcore porn. Now I can’t listen to that music anymore. I haven’t gone back to it since discovering everything because I’m so triggered by it. I also loved dancing myself, but now I feel like I only do it for his validation.

When I confronted him, he admitted that he had a problem. He told me he had tried to stop before, and he showed me what he had been doing. He came clean about a lot of things, hoping that his honesty and my willingness to hold him accountable would help him stop. He promised to stop and deleted his secret account, and put blocks on youtube and his phone to prevent himself from getting tempted. What made this particularly devastating was that he used to condemn porn and talk about how bad it was. He also experienced sexual abuse as a child, so I genuinely thought he would be the last person to betray me in this way. It broke my trust in him and in our intimacy, especially because it involved people we actually knew. He told me his trauma had affected him so much that almost anything could arouse him at this point, and that he had used porn to escape his trauma. I believe that his trauma may be part of the explanation, but it doesn’t erase what this has done to me. He also blamed some of his behavior on the fact that I had rejected him sexually multiple times, which is somewhat normal i suppose. No two people are ever going to have the same exact sex drive.

I also told him that some artists were sexually suggestive and that I didn’t want him listening to or supporting them anymore. This became a huge argument. He didn’t want to give up the music because it brought him joy, and he said he appreciated the production and notes and musical elements because he had been in band. I understood that music meant something to him, but I was struggling to cope. I don’t know how to reconcile those feelings.

I lost over 50 pounds after finding out about his addiction. A huge part of me believed that if I looked better, maybe he wouldn’t do this again. I became very slim, developed a smaller waist and thigh gaps, and changed my body so much. But now I fixate on the things I don’t like about myself. My booty is gone, I have hip dips that I can’t change, and I constantly compare myself to other women. I hate that this happened to me. I used to be confident in myself before this relationship, and now I feel like I’m lost. Also I would agree to sexual activities when I wasn’t in the mood because I was terrified that if I said no, he would replace me with someone else. He has repeatedly told me thats not how he is now, and he would never, but I can’t help it. I know how unhealthy that sounds. I know I shouldn’t have to make myself sexually available to keep my husband from turning to other women. But the fear of being replaced has become so deeply ingrained that it’s hard to separate what I actually want from what I’m afraid will happen if I say no.

We both stopped going out as much. He says he’s afraid of things now because I blamed him for sexualizing other women, while I became afraid of socializing because I couldn’t stop thinking about what he might do or how he might look at other women. He felt like no matter what he did, I’d be disappointed. We moved to a new state in January, and after a year of this, we have really no friends here. I did make some friends, but I became so anxious whenever I went out with them. I would worry that he might relapse while I was away, and eventually I gave up on my girl times. Last month i was away on a trip, I was constantly checking our apartment cameras to see what he was doing. I couldn’t relax and enjoy myself because I was terrified of what might be happening. the day I returned, he eventually admitted that he had watched porn and relapsed around four times that week. He said he had tried his best to stop. He came clean about it himself during an argument on the very day I got back.

That relapse hurt twice as much because he had previously told me that stopping was easy for him and that he had managed to go months and months without doing it.
His explanation was that I had been away having fun while his week had been depressing, and he felt like there was nothing else to do. I forgave him, or at least I think I did. We discussed being more open about the topic and how he could work toward recovery. But I also started noticing that he seemed to think my treatment of him was part of the reason he couldn’t stop, or even part of the reason he lost his previous job. He says he feels insecure and deeply judged by me. I told him I would try to do better, but I struggle with the idea that my reaction to being hurt is somehow the reason he continues to struggle. I didn’t leave him. I didn’t scream at him. I told him to stop doing something that was hurting me.

Since the August relapse, he hasn’t been watching porn, as far as I know. He deleted his facebook when he realized the app itself was pushing more content like that, and hasn’t gone back. His gets aroused by me much more easily now, and hasn’t had dysfunction like he used to in the very beginning. That’s one of the biggest things I can point to when I try to reassure myself that things have changed.
He has also become much more proactive about giving me positive comments and helping me when I fall into a spiral of insecurity. He’s kind to me. He doesn’t shout at me, takes care of household responsibilities, and genuinely takes care of me. I’m comfortable with him in many ways, and I love him deeply. That’s what makes all of this so confusing. I don’t feel like I’m living with someone who is cruel to me every minute of every day. There are good parts of our relationship, and I still feel attached to him.

I still check his phone occasionally, maybe once or twice a month. That’s a substantial improvement from last year, when I was constantly looking for evidence and pain shopping. I haven’t done it in a while, and I feel like I’m finally getting a little better at resisting the urge. He is off social media, has a discord group or two to discuss games and whatnot, all very normal looking. I still have moments when I spiral, even when he’s doing well. I feel guilty because I don’t want to punish him with negative energy if he’s genuinely trying to recover. At the same time, sometimes my thoughts about what happened trigger me.

I sometimes still worry that there are things I haven’t discovered. I’m starting my first job after college next week. Its in person while he’s been fully remote for the past two years.

I’m scared that he’ll relapse while I’m gone.

He’ll have the house to himself, and I won’t know what he’s doing. I know that I cannot monitor him every second of the day, but my brain keeps telling me that if I don’t know what’s happening, I’m going to get hurt again. Last week, I secretly installed another camera in the house. I tried to talk myself out of it, but I couldn’t. I told myself that at least if I knew what was happening, I wouldn’t have to live in uncertainty.
I know this isn’t a healthy solution. I know I can’t build a marriage around surveillance. But I was so desperate to feel safe that I did it anyway

I’m trying to become financially independent so that I have options incase things become bad. My current goal is to work toward financial stability by a set time and leave the marriage if that’s what it comes to. I want to give him another chance and I also don’t have the income or security to support myself and my cats.

For a long time, I genuinely thought all men behaved this way. My husband made comments that contributed to that belief, and I started thinking that being in a relationship meant accepting that my partner would constantly sexualize other women behind my back. Him and I both agree now that that’s not the case. And that addiction is something only a certain amount of people deal with.

One of thw hardest thing for me to accept is that I’m enough. That my body isn’t bad. That my face isn’t bad. That I don’t have to compete with every woman my husband encounter.
I also want to be able to listen to my favorite music without being triggered, go to the gym without comparing myself to every woman there, and go on trips without checking cameras or worrying. I want my life back. I want us to enjoy the things we used to before this happened. I can’t go to concerts with him if i’m constantly worried he’s gonna be checking people out there.

I hate that I have started making decisions about my own life around the possibility of his relapse. But I also don’t feel strong enough to face another discovery right now. I don’t know whether I can trust him again, whether his recovery will last, or whether I’m simply delaying an inevitable separation because I’m not emotionally ready to leave.

I just hope he doesn’t relapse again. I would genuinely want to leave him if he ever relapses again. I can’t take any more of this pain. But I can’t just outright make that decision without looking at my options and working hard to gain that independence. It also makes me feel selfish, like I am trying to so hard to keep this relationship until I’m stable or until he’s better, when I can let him go and that will waste less of his time. What if he finds someone after who is okay with this behavior and looks better than me too?

I’m posting here because I need people who understand. I need help getting out of these spirals when I feel the urge to snoop, when I start comparing myself to other women, or when I discover something that sends me back to square one. I need friends bad. I need support. I need people to remind me that I’m not crazy for being hurt, but also help me find a way to stop living in constant fear.
I thought I was the only woman who felt this way, and that other women are just okay with their husbands doing stuff like this.

How do I start rebuilding my self-esteem while I’m still living with him? How do I stop feeling responsible for his recovery? How do I prepare financially and emotionally for the possibility of leaving? And how do I stop being terrified that he’ll relapse every time I leave the house? Is there some things I need to be aware of?

Thank you to anyone who read all of this. I’m sorry for using this post as a rant or a journal. I’ve kept all of this inside since August 2025, and I genuinely needed somewhere to put it.
I’m so tired of crying alone.

I found out about my husbands porn use 1 year and 3 month back. He has done all of the right things therapy, quitting, communication and openness. The first few months I would cry every day had thoughts of hurting myself or ending it. me and him worked through it and still talk and communicate. but I was doing good for months and I thought that I had processed and healed. I know there will always be a scar but these last 2 weeks have been hellish. I keep thinking about all of the things he did and the disgust and pain. I feel like im moving backwards. when will this stop?
