I debated on making this post or not because I feel really bad about it in a lot of ways. But I feel like I just need to vent and put it out there. I’ve been transitioning for almost a decade and I’m in my mid 20s. I live in the Midwest in a blue state and a major metropolitan area. My state/city have especially become a hub for a lot of trans people cause of good healthcare, affordability, and politics. I’ve actually grown up and lived in this state my entire life but only recently moved to the city from another town as of 7-ish years ago
The first thing I hear a lot of people say about my city is that the community here is amazing. And it is very large, that’s to be sure. There’s a decent amount of events and you can recognize people but still have space from those you don’t like usually. And I totally get why some people absolutely love it here. But to be honest I‘ve had horrible experiences with my local trans community and I think it’s honestly what drove me to be stealth even moreso than bad experiences with cis people. I just had to list the main reasons why and complain. I feel like I’m going crazy but I have to talk about it.
I would like to preface this by saying the vast majority of these experiences are with white trans women and I actually hold no ill will towards them as a group. I support them as much as anyone. I just want them to treat me and other black trans people better. Same with early HRT girls
I go to bars and clubs with my friends pretty often, and like every other single woman I like to be flirted with. But way too many times other trans women come right out the gate saying extremely sexual stuff to me. Before I passed I got asked about my genitals a lot (and I’m black so a lot of the white girls just assumed I had a “BBC”), or had girls ask if my boobs were fake, or had women compliment how “sturdy” my hair looked and how it’s probably fun to pull in bed.
I’ve had several white trans women come up to me and imply that I should top them or imply that I’m naturally bigger and more dominant than they are because I’m Black (I’m really short about 5’3.5” and I’d get this a lot from taller girls I think as a coping mechanism on their part. Which makes me feel sad for them and also bad about my own height). I’ve even had multiple trans women (usually white early transitioners who are older) try and touch my hair or touch me without my consent. I’ve been sexually assaulted or almost coerced several times.
I had a very early HRT trans woman approach me and some friends and very early on in our convo she started talking about yuri and the lesbian porn she watches. It made both my two friend and me uncomfortable very quickly.
Before I passed I had multiple instances of trans women coming up to me, clocking me, outing me to nearby people (“you’re trans too, right?”), and then asking me details about how long I’ve been on HRT and when I plan to reach certain milestones like different surgeries. I don’t think I should have to explain why this is wrong. I know there’s a lot of debate about clocking but maybe you should try a simple conversation first instead of opening with this stuff.
When I’d get clocked usually they’d also mention about how black trans women like me have it really hard and how it must be so isolating and scary being me. I’ve gotten a lot of “you’re so strong” and “I could never be as strong as you” type language which just feels patronizing.
I’ve had several girls come up to me and state that they’re jealous of my features. That my dark skin hides acne so well or my figure or my hair or my height (especially my height—I’m not even kidding when I say I actually feel bad about myself cause it’s the first thing other trans women mention). It’s actually interfering with me feeling good about myself and I basically only hang out with like two trans women.
Not to mention I cut off my ex best friend who was a white trans woman who outed me at our shared workplace with a sex joke about my genitals in front of several coworkers. I had to change teams completely just so nobody knew I was trans. I’m also one of 5 entire black people working for the company, and the only black woman in the entire company.
And of course there’s loads of trauma dumping. Don’t get me wrong, I get it. My pre-transition (and honestly post-transition mostly) life has sucked major ass. But opening a conversation with me by telling me the most traumatic, violent, and explicit experiences you have kinda makes me feel like a therapist and puts me in an awkward and sad position. I don’t wanna cut someone off but you just met me and integrating new people into your support system takes time, intentionality, and consent. What am I supposed to say in response?
The worst part is whenever I mention these issues I get flooded with people I’ve met irl and online defending it saying that I’m being unfair because a lot of these girls are either pre-transition or early stages of HRT and haven’t been socialized differently yet. I’ve gotten told that me transitioning as a teenager gives me a great social advantage and privilege over them (which I agree with! It just feels weird to mention it). I’ve been told that it’s a bad look for me as a passing woman to feel grossed out by their comments or be cold to/reject them “like they were men.” I’ve been told that trans people are just socially weird and that having trans friends means having a higher tolerance for social transgressions.
Except I have multiple trans friends in my social circle. Quite a few actually. They’re just later in transition and mostly mid 20s too. I’ve vetted them heavily and they support me being stealth and never out me.
I’ve completely disconnected from the wider community here. I feel like it’s made me mean and bitter. Now whenever I’m approached I just automatically reject people I don’t know too well. If anyone starts getting too familiar or claims they’ve seen me at clubs or bars (or falsely claims they saw me at a trans themed night—they didn’t they’re just mixing me up with another black trans girl who’s my same height but several shades lighter) I just tell them they’re wrong and not to talk to me. I never give out advice regarding HRT anymore, never discuss my transition with anyone who I’m not close with or dating, never even passively socialize with most openly trans people I meet, and only ever respond to compliments or kindness with a quick and curt “thanks.”
I feel like shit. I feel like I’ve become some self-fulfilling prophecy of the stuck up girl that passes who shuns everyone different from her for protection. I don’t think I ever want to, or can healthily be, involved in the community here. But I feel like I’ve become really mean and judgmental towards them. It’s extended to me thinking the same type of nasty shit about my local community that conservatives online say. I can’t hang out with early transition people cause most of them here just talk about fleeing red states and how great my state is and how much they love being trans and transitioning and it turns into a multi-hour therapy session which I just feel like rolling my eyes at hearing their life story.
I’m in therapy for this and other things but I just feel horrible. I don’t know who else can relate to this but has anyone found a good middle ground or has any advice to give?
