Meta Discussion During Writ Period/Election Campaign, we should not have criticisms of the NDP on this sub

While I believe it is important to critically analyze the NDP so that the party can be more competent, have good policies and win elections, during both the previous federal campaign and the current BC campaign, pointing out the incompetence of the NDP, while justified, had a negative morale impact. IMO, criticism of the campaign should be done after the election.

This graph is going around. Really shows why BC needs a leader like Avi who can actually inspire people to vote

We need a socialist who can campaign in hope, not another technocrat who will campaign on contrived focus-grouped messaging.

It's looking like bye bye Bolsonaro with about 90% of districts counted:

Avi is more Lula than Eby, and that's a good thing

I know the contexts are different, but Eby-ism failed, while Lula stormed to a comeback win tonight

Lessons for the NDP going forward.

In my humble view, Avi Lewis' vision for the party is far more Lula than Eby.

That's a good thing.

You can't blame this BC loss on 'vote splitting'

  1. The BC NDP called the early election, so that's 100% on them
  2. The Greens support Proportional Representation, so they actually want to fix this system
  3. The ONLY vote splits in recent memory were right-wing Liberals splitting the vote in 2011 Federally, and in 2018-2024 Ontario.
  4. The BC CON win was so big, even a collapsed Green vote wouldn't have mattered. If literally 100% of them voted BC NDP, it would be roughly a tie, but that's an unrealistic conversion rate, and the vote distribution would have still been a BC CON win

The left doesn't split votes: Liberals do, and moderates are the ones who elect right-wing governments.

Stop pushing Carney-ist narratives

This is getting embarrassing at this point. They seem completely incapable at learning from their mistakes, they are still using the exact same the same failed strategies and continue to drop lower and lower in the polls.

Fuck Eby

Now that the election is over, I'm gonna say it.

Fuck David Eby. He was a weak leader with terrible political instincts. He seemed like a somewhat competent Attorney General, but he blew it as leader. Calling this election early was such a mistake, and the fact he lost to the BC Conservatives, a party with an interim leader and a racist scandal every other day, is insane.

I hope the BCNDP can recover from this. Good luck to you all in BC. You're in for a nasty 4 years unfortunately.

New BC NDP Leader Needs to Actually Inspire Hope and Young Voters

In BC, we're all processing this massive electoral loss and fumble today. However, the only hope i'm holding onto is the possibility of an actual leftist, sharp, and courageous new BC NDP leader willing to make bold changes in the future. The BC NDP as it was under Eby was doing good technical and policy solutions, but were merely managing the decline of our society characterized by massive wealth inequality and the impacts and contributors to climate change going unchecked. Going centre-right is clearly a failed political strategy and I hope the BC NDP learns from this mistake.

Elections nowadays are all about motivating people to get out and vote, usually through either hope or anger. This election saw ~300k fewer NDP voters even bother to vote compared to 2024. Eby did not inspire hope, that was the biggest mistake he made in my opinion. Conservatives and reactionary movements have been excellent on a global scale lately in fueling and channeling justified anger and outrage (albeit misplacing that rage onto the wrong people), which motivates people to vote.

This moment calls for bold solutions that actually address our systemic crises, similar to what the Green party is calling for, and I'm hopeful the next BC NDP leader election provides that hope and that avenue for real change, which would actually motivate/inspire the NDP base to vote in mass numbers.

What the B.C. election results mean for the environment

Excellent journalism from The Narwhal, as per usual. I realize that many of us are hurting today, but please consider bookmarking this article and coming back to it when you are ready.

Due to the Trump administration, we’ve been seeing how conservative anti-climate policy plays out. This will be an expensive assault on the environment, and we can’t let it stand.

The industrial carbon tax is preventing more emissions than any of our other climate policies, and we can’t afford to have it repealed. The amount of carbon lock-in will be enormous. Allowing more electricity to be generated by burning fracked gas will drive up our electricity costs and make them more volatile. Likewise, repealing the Zero Carbon Step Code for buildings, which is implemented at the municipal level, will lead to more households being stuck with heating systems that are needlessly costly to operate. Fossil fuel heating systems also lack a key climate adaptation benefit that heat pumps have: air conditioning. Forgive me for not mincing words, but if the adoption of heat pumps is delayed or stalled, people will die preventable deaths in the next heat dome.

I have a lot that I could say right now, but I will conclude with some thoughts about LNG. The Conservative proposal to take credit for “emissions avoided through clean B.C. exports” is one of the most ridiculous ideas that I’ve ever heard, in part because its premise is false: in actuality, LNG exports will increase global emissions. Eby knows this—he used to advocate eloquently against LNG. While I had my differences with Eby regarding his handling of LNG, I doubt that he wanted the LNG situation that he inherited. He is still a valuable member of our party, and if he were to come clean about the extent to which LNG has been greenwashed, then that would be immensely helpful in our fight to hold the Conservatives accountable for their coming attack on the climate.

Take care of yourselves, friends. We are now the official opposition, so let us staunchly oppose the spate of injustices coming our way, including climate injustices.

To all the supporters of the BC NDP

All I can say right now is I’m sorry folks, today and the days following are going to be tough, this is not the result we wanted. No, it’s not even the election we wanted, and it didn’t need to happen. But that is behind us now and we must plow forward, you will rebuild. For today and the next couple years, please be good to yourselves and to each other. Keep fighting the good fight.

In solidarity!

An Albertan Dipper

Fuck you bro you're genuinely going to go down as the stupidest Canadian politician. You, for quite literally no reason, fumbled a majority government with 2 years left in your mandate. You pried open the sealed shut jaws of victory to snatch defeat. Fuck you.

Can we please get some moderation in this subreddit?

We have got hours-old posts in this sub celebrating our loss right now and nothing being done about them.

I’m not talking about “told-ya-so’s” or upset think pieces from Rose Caucus members or whoever saying that they were right about Eby, I’m talkjng about actual celebrations. I just saw Conservatives posting AI-generated pictures of Doerkson’s face on Jesus body, celebrating their victory. That post is over 8 hours old despite being in violation of rules 7, 8 and 12 at minimum.

Increased moderation is pretty standard procedure for a political subreddit in the days after an election. People are already upset about the results, we need the sub to do better than this.

Blood is on your hands

Yet again, another place that was safer for trans people has fallen to fascism. Why did you do this to us? How could you? Now I have to fight for my life with only other trans people for backup and any safety and access to healthcare is going down the drain. When the Cons start legislating against us, our blood is on your hands. We could have had two more years of safety and more time to plan a better electoral strategy and maybe some electoral reform.

British Columbians chose to hurt people so they could line their pockets with gold.
