26/27 NHL Schedule for the New York Islanders
Of note:
First game is @ TOR, Wed 7:30PM. Toronto will be coming off a back-to-back with Montreal previously. I 100% think the Isles get this prime slot because of Schaefer.
First home game is Saturday 7:30PM against the Devils.
4 back to backs in December: away-home, home-away, away-away, away-home.
Longest road trip is late January to early February, 5 games with one day break in between each one: PIT CAR TBL FLA BUF. Then the All-Star break then an away game at MSG. January also begins with a 4-game road trip (SEA VAN CGY EDM).
Longest homestand is beginning of March with 4 games (WAS, VGK, PIT, MTL).
First game we see Lee again is Dec 15 (Tue 7PM) away. Feb 15 (Mon 3PM wow what a horrible time President's Day! You'll have off when Lee comes back!) he comes to see us.
Season closer is April 10th, 5PM vs CBJ at home (like two season ago... meaning maybe we'll land DuPont again this off-season?)

Perspective to all the "blow it up" after every loss fans who want to go tank mode because Dallas is better.
Jason Robertson -- 2nd round draft pick 39th overall Wyatt Johnston -- 1st round draft pick 23rd overall Rantanen -- Trade acquisition Miro Heiskanen - 3rd overall Thomas Harley -- 18th overall
So when some of us are pissed off at Darche for dealing that late 1st for 3 years of Schenn, maybe shut up.
And also, you don't need to draft at the top of lottery to be the team you're all wishing we were this morning. You need to have a good GM who knows talent and good systems in place to develop them.
You need to have a creative GM who can make a good trade and is active in the market.
The Stars were built with one top 3 overall and the rest of it was a good GM working the draft, free agent and trade lines.

Throwback to Barzal’s 23rd
First thing I saw on twitter when you search Mat Barzal. His digital footprint is insane 💀💀💀

What even is the plan this year?
It’s very obvious that the team:
1) Is DOMINANT when Schafer is on the ice. You can see the ice tilt the moment he gets on. And on the other hand you can see how the other teams immediately score when Deangelo/mayfield/whoever gets on after him. Their road games are gonna be ROUGH when other teams can game plan for him
2) Can’t score. Especially without macelli, Barzal, Ritchie, and Romanov. Thankfully the macelli and Ritchie injuries weren’t too damaging. Barzal I’m not sure but it seems like this might be a thing all year. At this point I’m wondering if you just put him on LTIR and use the extra cap space to maybe be a broker for a guy at the deadline? Taking a guy with 1/2 years on a deal and retaining half for a team and taking assets from both would be some tidy work.
3) Doesn’t want to burn a year off the ELC of any of their prospects in Hamilton. That I understand, and to be honest, I don’t think they’d be NHL ready either way (I’m talking about eiserman, aitcheson, and Gustafson mainly) but if the islanders are clearly out of the playoffs by thanksgiving/Christmas time, and by the trade deadline, do they just decide to trade off anyone of value (Pageau, Pelech, Pulock, Palmieri, etc) and bring up the kids for the remainder of the year? Again, burning a year off the ELC sucks but at a certain point you get into diminishing returns where you have less and less games, so it gets to the point where you might as well wait until there are 9 games left.
Just wondering about your thoughts because it seems like this is a dead .500 team spinning the wheels here.

I love the February 2011 Pens vs Islanders brawl.
Just wanted to say from a Pens fans perspective that I personally really loved this entire game and was one of the times I thought we actually deserved the beating. I gained a shitton of respect for this entire organization after that game. So 15 years later all I gotta say is.... Good Game from a Pens fan.

Meet the Players Event
I’m taking my 4 year old to the meet the players event for season ticket holders as it’s our first season. Any ideas on good strategies or how it worked last year? Thinking we start with going for Pageau since he threw him a puck earlier this season and we can get that signed, otherwise just trying to meet as many as possible to get autographs.

Potvin Hockey Card
One of my prized possessions is this hockey card of Potvin falling over Billy Smith. What photo editor did he piss off that this image got immortalized? To me it epitomizes the Islanders - might not always be the prettiest hockey but it gets the job done.
Today this card is worth an astonishing … checks Ebay … one dollar.

Schaefer High Flips
Anecdotally, it seems like 48 is opting for more high lobs into the neutral zone when he doesn't feel like he has a decent outlet out of the defensive zone. I understand the energy expenditure aspect when Schaefer logs such heavy minutes, I understand this team sorely lacks puck-transporting forwards in Barzal's absence, and I understand the idea of simplifying even such a brilliant decision-maker's process given his age and position. But so many of these high lobs are taken at the expense of small-area plays, especially passes, that would lead to another pass that gets the team out of the zone with possession. The high lobs allow the other team's D to regain possession and turn north, which just repeat the process that ended up producing the lob in the first place.
Schaefer's O-zone carry entries with possession are visibly lower this year -- it's like he's trying to preempt defenses that would swarm him as the puck carrier, when the better play would be to attract two defenders just inside the blue line on a zone entry and make a pass to an open man down the half wall or in the middle if the option presents itself. There's a lot of hitting red and dumping from Schaefer at the moment, and while this may be a stage in trying to play a very robust, mature game, it limits his offensive creation when he's the only viable puck-carrier on this NYI blueline.
Can't help but think about how Miro Heiskanen came into the league so NHL-ready, high-IQ, and mobile, and plateaued as a high-end 1D when he accepted relatively-limited offensive upside in exchange for consistency.

Similarities between Tavares and Tkachuk - with one huge difference
Both drafted high in the first round
Tavares spent nine seasons as an islander, Tkachuk spent eight as a senator.
Tavares and Tkachuk were both captains for five seasons
Both players were heralded as the one who could lead their team to greatness. Neither delivered.
Both had controversial gold medal wins in the Olympics with teams in the country they left their teams for that caused parts of the fanbase to sour on them
Both expressed a commitment to stay long term with their teams. Both left to fulfill what they called a childhood dream
Islanders won the homecoming game 6-1, Senators won it 5-1. Both teams gave up the first goal only to thoroughly dominate after
Both Islanders and senators fans threw jerseys on the ice and also covered up the name on the back of the jersey and then replaced it with “TRAITOR”
Chants both Islander and senators fans used:
Traitor
We don’t need you
Matthews better
Who’s your daddy
Both the Islanders in 2018-19 and Senators in 2026-27 were left for dead. Both are off to a better than expected start. Both are ahead of the teams their former captains left them for
The difference? The Islanders got NOTHING in return for Tavares. He begged not to be traded because he wanted to stay. Only to then later (in)famously post the pajama photo and calling it a childhood dream to play with Toronto. Additionally, his return did not happen until late in the season, meaning that the Islanders fans marinated in anger that much longer for almost an entire season before the moment of reckoning. The result? From Tavares’ perspective, an absolute hellstorm of fire and fury directed his way that dwarfed anything else I’ve ever seen, possibly even worse the return of LeBron to Cleveland after he bolted to Miami in 2010.

Any Islanders fans in Seattle?
Hey everyone, I’m a big isles fan who moved to Seattle about a year ago. I’d love to find some other Islanders fans around here to watch games with, grab a beer, or just hang out.
If there are already Seattle-area watch parties or a group chat, I’d love to join. Otherwise, reply or message me and maybe we can get a small group together. Let’s go Islanders!!!

What was like to be an Islanders fan in the relocation years (2008–2012)?
Younger Islander fan here, with the franchise recently being valued at 3 billion dollars, It's a bit hard for someone born in the 2000s to imagine a time when the Islanders were at risk of leaving New York entirely.
Did you actually think they were going to relocate? If so, would you have stayed a fan even with them playing in a different state, or would you have switched fandoms entirely?
What were games like? With the talks of relocation, I know attendance was not great at that time. But was there still a good atmosphere for games?
How did it feel when Wang reached a deal to move into Barclays Center? Were you relieved they were staying near Long Island, or disappointed they were leaving Nassau?
Just curious about what it felt like to be a fan during those times.

Brown Bag Deli - Tampa
I was doing some work in Hillsborough County this week and was referred to the Brown Bag Deli. It’s in the middle of a nondescript office complex across from some railroad tracks. My expectations were low until I saw the picture of Nystrom on the wall. The owners used to live on Long Island and were big fans. Cool little find in the middle of Bolts territory.
Brown Bag Deli - 3104 Cherry Palm Drive SU, Tampa FL 33619
Edit: Not Islanders related but if you are in the area, Frankie’s Italian Deli at 3930 US Hwy 301 in Riverview is just down the road and will feel like a piece of home for those who have relocated south. It’s pretty amazing, tbh.

In Lieu of Brady Tkachuks return to Ottawa, I felt nostalgic for this!
Crazy this happened 7+ years ago, and it only felt like yesterday this happened.
