The Nottingham Guide - Things to do, independent food, what's on, where to move, how to make friends (New for 2026)
Hey up! I love this city and am proud to have made it my home. This is a community updated guide to Nottingham, based on my own favourites and lots of suggestions from r/Nottingham.
This is not comprehensive, but it should be a helpful starting point if you’re visiting, moving here, studying here, or just trying to get out of your usual routine.
Please comment with anything missing, closed, outdated, misspelled or controversial.
Things to Do in Nottingham
Free
- Walk around the city looking at local landmarks: Robin Hood Statue, the Left Lion, Slab Square (Market Square), Sky Mirror, Nottingham’s historic lace buildings, the Long Stairs, the Park Tunnel.
- Walk through the Arboretum and General Cemetery, then back into town via Derby Road’s independents.
- Elm Avenue, Corporation Oaks and Robin Hood Chase make a lovely green corridor walk with views across the city.
- Nottingham Central Library, which often has local history or art exhibitions.
- Green Heart Park at the old Broadmarsh site, including the lace worker statues from the lace and Cotton growers from the wind rush generation
- Nottingham Contemporary.
- Stonebridge City Farm.
- Sneinton Market and Hockley for independent shops, street art and people watching.
- Canal walk to Beeston Lock, with the option to continue to Attenborough Nature Reserve and get the train back.
Mostly Free, But Check First
- Green’s Windmill and Science Centre. The mill is currently under repair until around November 2026, but the site may still be open.
- Wollaton Hall and Deer Park. The park itself is still a good visit, but check current charges before going as access and parking arrangements can change.
Paid
- Nottingham Castle - it's around £18 per adult but this is a yearly entry and it does have a nice green space to sit in
- Mortimer’s Hole tour at Nottingham Castle
- Wollaton Hall and the Industrial Museum.
- National Justice Museum.
- City of Caves.
- Penny Lane Arcade.
- Dice Cup Board Game Café.
- National Ice Centre.
- National Water Sports Centre.

Where are the boys in their mid to late 20s?
Hi! I am 26F and looking to start dating again.
Before anyone suggests doing things I would ordinarily enjoy and hope for the best there, I do! I am pretty busy throughout the week. Monday is the one day I don’t have plans typically so I can place in another recurring thing. I was an introvert most of life but this is the most social I have been ever so getting out there is not necessarily the problem.
The apps are awful. I gave them a try a couple times and it seems like people are either very vulgar upfront or just not going anywhere with things. In any case, I would prefer to meet organically esp from a safety pov.
If you’re a guy in this age range, let me know what you are up to in your spare try and I might give it a try to meet new people. I can pretty easily get a conversation going so I just need the right environment. I am already part of 2 run clubs, a gym and have a crafty hobby.
Thank you :)

Hockley Hustle
Just wanted to thank all the venues and restaurant/pub staff for a great event on Sunday. The weather was not ideal but it was worth the effort to get out of the house. I found so many new artists to follow! 🙌👌

Searching for a restaurant
Trying to find a restaurant for a date night with my husband. Sounds easy but a lot of the places we want to go to do not take reservations. Last time we tried to just find a spot on a Saturday we were turned away by 4 restaurants before we got so hungry we just ended up at yo sushi.
This is our first proper date night since June and we want to do cocktails first so we do want to be in town. Any cuisine considered but the more romantic the better.

Casual football/7-a-side?
Hi, I'm looking to get back into playing football. Just looking for casual games atm as I'm just looking to ease myself back into it.
I'm 35, haven't played for years and currently quite overweight. So something laid back would be great for the time being.
I can currently play on most days of the week.
I've made a similar post in the past and was recommended manvfat a couple of times, which I have tried before but the weigh-ins wasn't for me. Just looking to play football.
Thank you 👍

Potential friends
Hi! I’m 22f and I moved here for uni, but I haven’t really connected with anyone in my course (they are all younger than me and have roommates I live in a studio) but I would like to make friends outside of uni too, if anyone would be interested that would be cool!

Making new friends🥰
Hiya? I’m Liv! I’m 25 & I’m from just outside of Notts!🍃
Would love to make some new gal pals 😇
I love video games, DND, anime (currently on my jujitsu kaisen rewatch! My fave character is Maki if you were wondering also) weightlifting, hiking and I’m also Wiccan (I love to do tarot card readings)✨ I’m also very much neurospicy with my autism 💅Vegan & sober gurlie too!☀️
I’d also 1000% describe myself as an anxious extrovert as I love making new friends but also overthink constantly😳
Feel free to drop me a message or comment below📩🌻

Anyone who attended St Phillip’s Church or Youth Groups in Bestwood/Top Valley (1990s/early 2000s)?
Hi everyone. I’m looking to connect privately with anyone who attended St Phillip’s Church in Bestwood, specifically the youth groups or parish events, between the 1990s and early 2000s.
I am looking into some sensitive matters regarding experiences there during that time. If you went to this church or its groups during this period, or if you have older siblings/friends who did, please send me a private message.
Everything will be kept in strict confidence. Thank you.

Moving to Nottingham with young kids: where should we look? Budget £300k
Hi all, we're a family with young kids relocating and would love suggestions on where to look.
Budget: up to £300k for a 3-bed semi with a decent garden.
What matters most to us: - Low crime - Under a 10-minute walk to a tram or train (we'll likely only have one car, and my wife will be job hunting for admin/NHS roles) - Good or great primary schools (70%+ KS2) - At least some diversity nearby we are from India (around 5-10%) - Near parks, a swimming pool and play areas
So far we've shortlisted Beeston, Chilwell and Toton. I've seen Sherwood and Mapperley mentioned often in this subreddit, but I'm not sure how safe they are or how easy it would be for my wife to reach jobs from there.
Which areas or streets would you suggest, and which would you avoid?
On a side note, we're also deciding between Nottingham and Leeds (Garforth or Cookridge). Has anyone lived in both and can compare? My job has offices in both cities, so I can work from either.
Thanks

Chess clubs in Beeston/the city
Hi all, moving up next month and looking to join a chess club to meet people and have some fun. I'm intermediate (1400) but mostly looking to hang out and play some games rather than do anything competitive or study. Is anyone a member of any of the chess clubs and which ones could you recommend for this vibe?

A mystery entrance, Friar Lane, Nottingham.
This is not a collage. This is how close the buildings appear to be. On the left at number 100 was an estate agent. That became Henfrey’s Hair Salon, which has moved now to Eldon Chambers. On the right is the entrance to number 96, a "Commercial" address, meaning it is used for businesses and organizations, not residential. So who resides in the middle at number 98? And why did this entrance escape all previous new builds through the decades?
Well, look closely. The wheat sheaf you see is the symbol of the Freemasons. I believe it leads to more business offices on the left above number 100. I am not suggesting it has any masonic connections today, but if indeed it was them who managed to protect this beautiful structure, I for one am grateful.

Stoney St car park
Hi all. Not been that way for a while - has the car park on Stoney St changed hands?
It used to be an NCP and Google maps still shows it, but searching for it comes up as Q-Park.
Just want to make sure I don't book the wrong thing in the app 😅
