2023 Fall and Winter Orchid Trade and Sale Thread

Please use this post only to offer or request orchids for trade or sale. Before you post what you'd like to trade/sell, or what you're looking to trade for, read the rules below first!

Rules:

1.) No personal information can be exchanged publicly. Conduct sharing of addresses via pm or email.

2.) Post what orchid(s) you have for trade, what you're looking for in return. If you have pictures, post them or write an accurate description of the orchid you want to trade or sell. If you're selling, post how you'd like to receive compensation.

3.) If you agree to a trade and have an issue on your end of the deal, communicate! Most people are reasonable and will understand a delay or an unexpected issue that comes up. That being said, trade at your own risk. The moderators are not responsible for privately conducted trades gone wrong. However, if there's an issue with an ongoing trade do contact the moderators. If someone fails to come through with their end of the deal, ignores communication or otherwise is being problematic we need to make the community aware of deadbeat traders. Do NOT make posts calling people out, insulting, harassing, or making accusations at them publicly.

4.) Only make legal trades here. If you ship or receive a trade overseas or out of your country, make sure all proper paperwork is in place first if required.

5.) Ship within a reasonable time and pack well. Flat rate Priority, 2-3 day via USPS within the US is standard for plants. Use whichever shipping method is appropriate for other countries. Your orchid shouldn't spend more than a 2-3 days in the mail so they don't suffer too much from the heat/cold. While in cooler weather its generally better to ship orchids totally dry, its probably best to water any more moisture loving plants a day or two before they ship out (so they are moist but not soggy) or wrap some sphagnum that has been wetted but thoroughly squeezed out around the roots of bare root plants.

6.) If you've successfully traded, update your post to make sure it availability is accurate.

Giveaways, and just trying to re-home an orchid that maybe just isn't performing for you is totally fine to post too! You never know who might want to try growing it. Seed pods are also a great thing to offer since many people may want to try flasking and it is safer and easier to send seeds than plants. If everyone trades fairly this is a great way to add to your collection or get rid of orchids you are bored with or are willing to make divisions of.

Happy trading!

I apologize for the terrible photo because I haven’t figured out how to put it on my wall yet but I just got this BEAUTIFUL Oncidium Sharry Baby chocolate orchid! I would really appreciate tips on how to take care of it and encourage new blooms after these are done with consideration that this mount has no medium attached. Thank you so much!

My Zygopetalum 'Jumpin Jack' flowered! This is my first orchid (of 3) and these are the first flowers successfully grown in my home! Wanted to come share the process.

Plant purchased May 31 freshly in bloom, the flowers lasted ~7 weeks. I noticed the new flower stalks starting in early Sept, the first flower started opening on my birthday Oct 11 which was super exciting, and the last flower on the second stalk is finishing opening today Oct 26.

I counted 26 blooms! I’ve had this orchid for about 10 years now and it’s never bloomed like this before.

Question Is this… a mitten?

This had been looking like a root as it was starting to emerge but now that it’s peeking out more, it looks vaguely mitten-like? A mini mitten, if you will. Could it be… 😯

I have nobody at home to get excited about this with but it's finally bloomed! It is the most gorgeous little flower on the fattest little bulb.

I think coelogyne fimbriata is my new favourite.

Phragmipedium sedenii sequential blooms

This lady will have 2 open blooms for about 24 hours before the old one drops. Caught it with sequential blooms 2 and 3.

This is a "lady slipper" orchid that loves moisture and humidity. Inside of the slipper is super slick. A pollinating insect tries to land on the lip, falls in the slipper to the bottom, climbs up the back which is textured with hairs, deposits other flowers' pollen, gets pollen stuck on it from this flower, and flies to the next flower. Nature is neat, even if this is a man made hybrid.

I just received this, and am excited to use it.
Is there any benefit to spraying leaves with it now and again?

The Oscillante not that difficult: Masdevallia ariasii

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

Everyone told me the Oscillantes are fussy. This one isn't. Masdevallia ariasii comes from the wet forests of southeastern Ecuador and northern Peru, around 900–1000 m, and stays tiny, a few centimetres of leaf on a blackish ramicaul no thicker than a match. The flower is the surprise: nearly round, translucent pale yellow, a red spot at the base of the lateral sepals and two long, reflexed tails. Grown mounted on a short layer of sphagnum, always lightly moist, 70%+ humidity, good air movement. Sensitive to excess water, that's the one thing it won't forgive.

Cymbidiums

I thought you all might enjoy seeing my Cymbidiums. One pot was left by previous owner and I had no idea what it was until it bloomed. They stay outdoors and receive no special treatment. We have separated them and now have 4 pots. We are in the mountains of Hidalgo, Mexico. My indoor, babied orchids don’t do nearly as well.

Success My daughter's birthday orchid is almost as big as she is.

I gave this to her for her 11th birthday in February. I didn't think it would last long without my intervention but wowee, it's more than doubled in size and is covered in buds! When I asked what her secret was, she told me she reads to it every night so it can get all of her carbon dioxide to grow big and strong. I think she's got more plants in her future! She's super excited to go shopping for a new pot this weekend because this thing is definitely outgrowing the one it's got.
