General Perth is now actually PERTH

Been here for 2 years and pretty much head in the sand. With grief and loneliness I was like meh most of the time. The city never felt home and was aloof most of the time. Last week my brother and his wife visited me and I took them around to a lot of places. Honestly, I saw Perth this weekend from a different lens. I am so in love with city now … It has got a great mix of everything and suddenly find it all awesome 🤩.. the views from Kings Park and Elizabeth Quay at night was mesmerising.. It’s not like I haven’t been to these places before, but being there with my family was so much more exciting.. Perth is awesome .. Took me a solid two years, but yeah my brain cells have finally woken up.

WA News Perth, can we help save a piece of our city's history? Gilkisons must vacate tomorrow

Gilkisons Dance Studio has announced that it must leave its premises at 45 Murray Street tomorrow, 28 October, following a change in building ownership.

The studio has been part of Perth since 1931. According to its public announcement, negotiations to stay fell through at the last moment, and it currently has no alternative location to announce.

That's an extraordinary amount of history and community connection potentially at risk, with barely any time to work out what comes next.

I've contacted local media outlets to see if they can bring attention to the situation. I'm hoping that getting the story in front of more Perth residents might help uncover options, whether that's a suitable alternative venue, an organisation that can assist, or someone who can help facilitate a solution.

If you've danced at Gilkisons, have memories of the studio, or know of a venue that might be suitable, please share your thoughts.

Does anyone know of other organisations, community groups, local representatives or people we should be contacting?

I realise public attention can't guarantee anything, and this doesn't necessarily mean the business itself is closing permanently. But I'd hate to see a Perth institution lose its home without at least trying to find a way forward.

Even if you can't offer practical help, sharing the story might get it in front of someone who can. ❤️

General Has anyone here ever been on a Transperth train or bus where someone was fast asleep by the time the vehicle got to the last stop and if so what actually happens?

So I’ve got a mate that lives up in Yanchep and I caught the train late at night with the intention to meet him at the station, anyway when we got to Joondalup I actually nodded off and fell asleep for a bit and woke up at Eglinton and my thought was “imagine if someone didn’t wake up and we got to Yanchep which is the end of the line, what the hell happens if you are just laying there unconscious on your own”

Anyone here either seen it happen or even been the person themselves? Would be fascinating to find out if it happens with buses as well

General Support worker charged in Greenwood

Why the hell is a male support worker responsible for showering and changing a non-verbal vulnerable female?

I’ve worked in community services for years and never seen that occur. As a female I’m given females to look after. What a disgusting human being, but also whoever allowed that to happen needs to be fired too.

Looking for Advice Job location (Fremantle) different than what was advertised (Alkimos, Butler).

Hi everyone,

So, I applied for a company that has multiple locations state-wide.

The advertisement stipulated the position would be located at their Alkimos, Butler or Leederville location. I'm located in Alkimos, so any of those locations would be fine.

I was offered the job and received my written offer today, confirming the position is in Fremantle.

I'm conflicted about it. I do want this job (it's good pay, relevant to my degree ect), but the location is obviously not what was advertised and is a long commute. I confirmed with the recruiter and she said this was definitely the right location.

Just wondering what everyone else's experience has been with considerable commutes to work. I had a long commute before, and it wasn't particularly ideal after a while.

General Perth dog owners, I know most of you probably do already but if you don't please keep a permanent collar on your dogs with a contact number on it.

I was out on a lunch time walk today and found two dogs that I knew to be from a specific house on my street. I love those dogs but they were large and energetic and I had no way of restraining them. I managed to get them back to their house and keep them at the front door but there was no one home, the side gate was open and there was a lock that prevented me from closing it... not that I think I would have been able to get them into the yard anyway.

Luckily after about 20 minutes someone came home but I was running up against time pressure and getting ready to call the local council (and leave a note on the door so they would know where their dogs were).

I'm glad to have helped and they are cute dogs, i would just rather have been able to call someone straight away to let them know than to worry if they were going to be out all day.

General Italian restaurant recommendations

Travelling to Perth from Sydney next week. My mother is retiring this Friday after 50+ years as a nurse. Would love to take her to an Italian restaurant for a celebration while in Perth.

Would love recommendations. It doesn’t have to be high end fancy, she’s a humble gal!

Much appreciated!

General At what point did crossing the river become a long-distance relationship in Perth?

One of the funniest things about Perth is how seriously we take the north-of-the-river versus south-of-the-river divide.

People will happily drive 40 minutes to the beach, head down south for a weekend, or sit in traffic for ages getting to work.

But suggest catching up with a mate on the other side of the Swan and suddenly you're asking them to undertake an interstate journey.

Obviously I'm exaggerating, but only slightly.

It got me thinking about how much our friendships depend on where we live. When everyone's scattered across the suburbs, even something simple like grabbing dinner starts to require planning, parking calculations and someone inevitably saying, "Can't we just meet somewhere closer?"

And the funny part is that the actual distance isn't always enormous. Sometimes it's just the mental barrier of going somewhere outside your usual patch.

I do understand the practical side. Perth is sprawling, public transport isn't convenient for every journey, and nobody wants to spend their whole evening travelling for a two-hour catch-up.

Still, I wonder whether we've become a bit too comfortable staying in our own little pockets of the city.

So I'm curious: how far would you realistically travel across Perth for a casual catch-up with friends?

And does the whole NOR/SOR divide actually affect your social life, or is it mostly just a running joke?

Looking for Advice Good female GPs around Perth?

Hello! I'm struggling with female related issues and whilst I have a fantastic relationship with my current male GP, I feel my female related concerns might not be being understood. Does anyone know any good female GPs in roughly the Rockingham to Cockburn area? ( Sorry if this sounds strange, I'm autistic and don't really know how or where to ask for help ).

General 🚨 LOST WALLET — WESTFIELD CAROUSEL, PERTH 🚨

Hi everyone, I lost my black Braun Büffel wallet at Westfield Carousel on 27 October.

It contains my Malaysian IC (MyKad), Curtin College student ID, and a significant amount of cash in AUD and MYR.

This wallet was a gift from someone very important to me, and it means a lot to me. I’m really worried and desperately hoping to find it with all its contents still inside.

If anyone has found it or has any information, please message me privately. I would be extremely grateful for any help.

Please share this post so it can reach more people. Thank you so much. 🙏🏻❤️

Looking for Advice Visiting Perth from the US in November 2027 — Looking for Local Recommendations and Perspectives!

Hey everyone!

I’m from the US, and I’m hoping to visit Perth in November 2027 for around 10–14 days before flying over to Sydney for another 10–14 days. It’ll be my first time visiting Australia, and I’m incredibly excited!
I’ve always wanted to see a kangaroo in person, ever since I was a little kid, so that’s definitely high on my list. 😂🦘 I’m also hoping to experience as much of Australia as I can while I’m there, particularly the local food, culture, nature, architecture, and everything else that makes Perth unique.

One thing I want to make clear is that I’m not just looking for the typical tourist experience. Of course, I’d love to see some of the well-known attractions, but I’m equally interested in experiencing everyday life in Perth, discovering places locals genuinely enjoy, and getting a better feel for what living there is actually like.

I’ve even considered the possibility of moving to Australia someday, so this trip would be an opportunity to explore that idea and see whether I could picture myself building a life there. I’m not making any decisions just yet, but I’d love to hear honest perspectives from people who actually live there!

I’d especially appreciate recommendations for:
Food: Local favorites, underrated restaurants, bakeries, cafés, and dishes I should try.
Nature and wildlife: Beautiful places to explore, wildlife encounters, parks, and spots that might not be on every tourist’s itinerary.
Architecture and culture: Interesting neighborhoods, historic buildings, museums, and places that give Perth its character.
Everyday life: What do you love about living in Perth? What do you think visitors misunderstand about the city? What are some of the less obvious pros and cons of living there?

I’d also be happy to connect with people who enjoy chatting with visitors or meeting up for something casual, like coffee or lunch, if our schedules happen to line up while I’m there. I’d love to get to know some locals and hear about their experiences rather than relying entirely on travel guides and Google searches.
I’m not necessarily expecting anyone to show me around or make plans with me. Even just exchanging recommendations and perspectives beforehand would be fantastic!

I’m still in the early stages of planning, so I have plenty of time to figure things out. If you have any advice for someone visiting Perth for the first time, I’d genuinely love to hear it.

Thanks, everyone! I’m really looking forward to experiencing your part of Australia! 🇦🇺❤️

General Perth has a second map made entirely out of places that don't exist anymore

I've realised there are two ways to navigate Perth.

There's Google Maps, with street names and actual current businesses.

Then there's the version apparently stored in the brains of people who've lived here long enough.

I asked a bloke at work how to get to a place the other day and his directions included, in order, the old servo, where a Hungry Jack's used to be, and the corner that had a video shop about fifteen years ago.

None of those things are there now.

The weird part is everyone else in the conversation knew exactly where he meant.

Someone said, oh yeah, near the old hardware place.

Instant recognition around the table.

Meanwhile I'm sitting there thinking we've now identified this location using FOUR demolished businesses and still haven't said the name of a road.

I've started noticing my family does it too. Mum will describe somewhere as being behind a supermarket that moved years ago. Dad still uses a pub that changed names twice as his main geographical reference point.

And somehow it works.

There must be an entire invisible version of Perth layered underneath the current one, made up of closed shops, demolished pubs, old intersections and buildings that only exist because enough people still remember them.

Give it another twenty years and we'll be navigating exclusively by ghosts.

Where to find Where to find okra and filé powder in Perth?

I have been trying to find okra and filé powder online and everywhere I have looked its costs so much in shipping. Does anyone happen to know if there is anywhere in the metro area that I can find them where it won't cost a small fortune?

Looking for Advice High school music program suggestions please

• Upvotes

My daughter is currently in year 5 preparing for the upcoming ASET in 2027. We are currently looking at what Gate programs that would suit her, so that we would be ready to mark our preferences after the exam. We live in Willetton senior high school catchment and we're also considering the academics gate program if she gets a seat.

She is currently just started on the AMEB grade 1 series in piano, been practicing just about an year more and showing keenness in learning more. I thought it exploring the option of a music program in high school if it would suit her interests.

I'm posting this to seek suggestions regarding the two schools Churchlands and John Curtin that offer music specialist gate programs. Does anyone know how it is to pursue these programs? Any idea about approximate aset score cut off in the recent years to be admitted into these programs is appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
