Staying On-topic

Off-topic posts & comments will be removed. Repeat offenders will be banned.

The goal of this subreddit is to "Share, Compare & Improve Long-Term Investment Portfolio Strategies".

  1. Long-term is at least a decade. Is this money for retirement or some other long-term goals?

  2. If your question or advice is about your portfolio, share your WHOLE portfolio. Your portfolio is all of your assets or at least all of your assets for a particular goal (retirement, for example).

  3. An investment portfolio is composed mostly of investments, not speculative assets. Currencies, commodities, collectibles, & options, for example, are speculative assets.

  4. Show how much you have ($ or %), or plan to have, of each asset in your portfolio. Sorting largest to smallest is helpful.

  5. In a 401k, list all available options EXCEPT A. Don't list every target date fund; just the one for the year closest to your 65th birthday, B. If there's an SDBA, just say so.

  6. Sharing your portfolio in this subreddit means you want feedback about it.

  7. Showing the name of each asset is very helpful. We don't have thousands of tickets symbols memorized. If we don't recognize your ticker symbols, we'll probably move along rather than looking them up.

  8. Bogleheads created & moderated this subreddit. Research & experience show that investors are very likely to get higher returns with less risk & less effort by following the Bogleheads Philosophy than by trying to beat the market. If you don't want feedback based on the Bogleheads Philosophy, don't post in this subreddit.

Advice on beginner portfolio

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’m relatively new to investing, but I want some advice on how to optimize my portfolio. I’m a 24yo male that just got my first big job. I’m single and live with my parents. Would you keep it as is? Adjust the percentages? Change the stocks/ETFs? I’m open to any and all advice. I also have a 401K.

I’m focusing on mainly ETFs, but as you can see I want to try out some individual stocks for fun, which is why 5% is dedicated to that.

Also how much of my paycheck would be the minimum goal to invest. I just need a number to shoot for.

Thank you!

Brokerage / 529 Gameplan Help

• Upvotes

Without divulging every little detail about our financial system. Here are some of the pertinent details:
Income:175k
Savings rate w/ employer match, plus 2 Roth IRA’s: ~33k a year ~18%
Retirement accounts: ~142k
Brokerage Account: ~65k
Emergency Fund/Savings/ Checking:
32k/25k/10k

Going to have a kid within the next 6 months. Planning for this major life change, to include going to single income with a SAHM. Income listed above is just mine as that’s what we’re planning to have starting in the spring. A huge priority is to send our kid(s) to Catholic school K-12. Trying to make a solid gameplan for how to accomplish this. I’ve used some AI tools to provide a plan for me on how to make it all happen and model it out. Need a human critique.

It has suggested to liquid some brokerage funds to seed 529’s. One 529 for k-12, and another 529 for college all for one kid. So there’s no major drag on long term growth needed for college. The model it ran was based on 5k per year k-8, and 8k per year 9-12, at a 3% increase every year. These numbers came from current costs - state educational assistance predicted to receive. Don’t believe I’ll be able to cash flow k-12 tuition expenses

It suggested a 10k seed for k-12 and 16k seed for college, this plus 330/mo k-12 and 135/mo college at 8% return will provide enough for k-12 and roughly 150k for college . Who know what college will cost in 20 years but that’s a solid amount to cover (it predicted that covers half or more in 20 years). Inside the k-12 529 we came to the system of funding a growth fund, and once kindergarten hits moving funds once a year or twice a year to a fixed income fund to cover the next bill, so maxing growth while having near term expenses in fixed income. ~6-6.5% return for k-12. All growth fund for college 8%.

Long winded but is this a good system? Changes? Thoughts?

Also is this a fine use for brokerage funds? I really don’t have cemented plans with the funds, probably a combination of next car, next house, next kids education seeds, home upgrades etc

Obelisk: fewer ETFs, clearer purpose. What would you change next?

After multiple iterations (see previous versions), I’m now working toward a simpler, 10-position portfolio with diversified growth, a modest edge and some downside protection, if possible.

Based on your feedback, I strengthened the broad-market core, increased international exposure, eliminated thematic bets and removed overlapping growth/dividend funds. What remains is a broad core, selective momentum/value tilts, modest gold and Bitcoin, and a 10% Treasury reserve.

There’s been real progress, but as the concentrated bets disappear, so does some of the portfolio’s personality. I know individuality isn’t an investment thesis, but I’d like to preserve a few intentional convictions.

Which remaining holdings earn their place? What would you simplify or reallocate next, and why? Despite some of the pushback so far, I’m still here to learn.

Mid-thirties, taxable account. This is a target framework I’ll transition toward gradually with taxes in mind. Thanks

Rate my portfolio.
Let me know your honest thoughts.
I am considering selling 3/4 of my Microsoft to buy 1/2 Google, 1/4 Amazon. I have some capital losses on Adobe to offset. I think Google and Amazon have higher growth potential, while not compromising on quality.
I think this is an opportune time, since Microsoft is up recently, while Google and Amazon are flat/down over the last 6-12 months.
I think keeping 50% in hyperscalars is acceptable.

My 15-position portfolio is finally complete! How did I do?

Hello fellow portfolio enthusiasts,

I wanted to take a moment to share the third and final iteration of my portfolio, now titled Spire (formerly Beacon).

In this latest revision, positions such as SMH and DGRO were meaningfully reduced, but not eliminated, with the weight reallocated to strengthen my VTI core. The standalone technology sleeve was eliminated, with the remaining 2.5% SMH allocation incorporated into the thematic sleeve. Additionally, SCHG and SPMO are now equally weighted at 7.5% each, providing balanced and meaningful exposure to growth and momentum.

I sincerely want to thank everyone who participated in helping me workshop the previous versions of this portfolio. Your thoughtful feedback, constructive criticism, and encouragement have been invaluable throughout this process.

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Otherwise, I’ll see you all toward the end of 2027 with a performance update!

Watchtower → Beacon → Spire
