[Woodley / Earley / Shinfield] Portraits mark Black History Month in Wokingham Borough
Afternoon everyone 😊
Since we've joined Reddit, we've mostly been talking about how we work day-to-day, and often how it directly affects you, but today we thought we'd share a nice human interest piece (and a link if you want to know more!)
For Black History Month, which ran throughout October, we invited local Black residents to share their experiences, achievements and hopes for the future as part of our Honouring Our Communities photography exhibition at Wokingham Library.
This was produced with Voice of Inclusion and Equality (VINE) and can be seen for the rest of this week during normal opening hours.
Here are just four of their stories - you can read them all on our website:

Rachel "Ray" Hassan grew up in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, one of the UK’s oldest multicultural communities. Whether spending time at Dinton Pastures with her family and dog, or supporting local people as chief executive of Citizens Advice Wokingham, she enjoys being part of a strong and caring community. Her message to future generations is to believe in their worth and never give up on their ambitions.

Thanda Mhlanga, a proud resident of Charvil, is guided by Ubuntu - a Nguni African philosophy and the idea that “I am because we are”. Through his NHS career and volunteering, he helps organisations remove barriers and create opportunities for people from all backgrounds. He encourages young people to stay curious, embrace education and have the confidence to challenge injustice.

Jacqui Mukono founded Project Salama to support survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence and trauma. She is a passionate advocate for inclusion and believes strong communities are built through kindness, courage and people standing alongside one another. Jacqui has helped build connections through initiatives such as Chai & Chat sessions.

Francis Mbiye Kaninda was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and built a career in technology after moving to the UK. He now works for us to help local people access opportunities and services. His message is simple: never let your circumstances define your potential, and use your success to help others.

Question Anywhere to sell pokemon cards?
Hi! I have some chinese 30th celebration SARs i’m wanting to sell, i’ve already tried geekstorestuff and they said no as they usually only buy english. I desperately need the cash as I’m a decently broke student so is there anywhere else in town that’s worth trying?
Thank you!

Question Best way to get to Heathrow at 3am
Hey everyone. I have to get to T2 at 3:45am on the weekend. I will be travelling by myself so I’m a bit worried what to do. My options so far are:
- Premier Inn at T4 which has a covered walkway to T4 and use the free transport at the airport
- Get a taxi (haven’t been able to find anything at 3am yet and the one place I did ask quoted me £120). It’s also quite late and I feel a bit nervous as a woman travelling late in a cab.
- Take the last railair and find a place at the airport to sit (I am not very open to this idea cause I know the airport is not busy at night and I would be land side).
Any help and support would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: Appreciate all the help. From everyone’s comments, I’m going to go for the railair at 2:40 something. Thank you!!

Information Oxford Road or Baker Street?
Hi everyone!
I (mid 20s, female) am thinking of moving to Reading, somewhat limited on options due to price, moving from Bucks.
I’ve seen a lot of properties in some roads of Oxford Road (the A329), particularly in the back of Gower Street and George Street.
I’ve also seen some on Baker Street, but not sure about either.
When I try Googling about either, anything about both roads is a couple years old now.
Does anyone know those roads and could let me know how they are? Most of the properties I can afford are around that area so any advice about the general area is very welcomed too.
Thank you!

Dalhlia’s cakeshed Tilehurst
Hi to all in the reading community! I have a little bakeshed open on Fridays in Tilehurst . It suffered a little collapse at the hands of storm Austen but I’m hoping will be ready to go again for this Friday which is half term and Halloween. The menu changes weekly but I always keep some favorites. Perfect bakes for a cosy weekend. Would love your support 🥹

Reading charity art fair today and tomorrow!
I just wanted to let people know about the charity art fair going on this weekend.
It is on Pepper Lane, at Leighton Park school - right next to the university.
It's running 10-5 today (Saturday 24th), and 10-4 tomorrow (sunday 25th)
I haven't seen much advertising for it, but it is totally worth going to. There's a lot of really amazing art and a whole bunch of ceramicists, jewellers and other makers showing their work too!
It's run by the Maiden Erlegh rotary club and 25% of any proceeds from the art goes to charity (the other 75 to the artists!)
Here's the website for details: https://rotaryartandcraftfair.co.uk/

Recommendations for a casual swimming club for my teenager?
Any casual swimming clubs around where they swim in the evening? My teenager is amazing at swimming, currently at a club but for various reasons the running of it /staff aren’t great. She doesn’t want to compete but does want a regular session (once a week is fine) that will push her hard and keep her skills and stamina up with a group her age. Any recommendations please? Happy to travel within reason!
