This question has been asked more times than one can possibly imagine. “How do I age this or that.” Wear it

About two years ago I got into reenacting and started doing World War I German and Civil War. I’ll be straight up my kits were incredibly farby. I didn’t talk to anyone before I bought it. I didn’t reach out to units before I bought it.
That’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned: ask before you buy. Talk to a unit. Message people on Facebook, Instagram TikTok Reddit anywhere. Nine times out of ten, if you buy first and ask later you are gonna be spending twice more money.
I’ve also noticed a big problem across social media. When someone posts a kit that isn’t great, a lot of people just comment things like
This has a lot of work to do
This is trash
That’s it no explanation
If you think a kit needs work PLEASE say why
For example
“This impression needs improvement because the bread bag is incorrect for the time period, and the ammo pouches are ww2 style. Feel free to shoot me a DM so I can show you where you can replace some things.”
That helps. Just calling someone’s kit trash doesn’t
If it’s just for Halloween or a costume, who cares? A WWI uniform with a WWII helmet for Halloween isn’t a big deal. But if you’re serious about the hobby authenticity does in fact matter.
If you do ACW I strongly suggest looking up some of the campaigner Fb pages those guys will help you guide in the right direction. Try and reach out to less mainstream media if you really want a good accurate impression. Words are money in this hobby
If you’re in a unit they should be helping you steer in the right direction. And if they aren’t then you should consider leaving them and finding yourself a better group of guys. I am thankful that my unit actually has helped me steer clear and saved me probably 500 bucks.
Most of us start out rough and I think the hobby would be 100 times better if we all followed what I just wrote.
Sorry for the rant I just think people need to know

A little posting with kind permission of the admins for an event coming up in our little corner of Wales, the RAF Fairwood Common 2027 Warbirds and Military Show.
My keenness to get this out there is pretty high given how few reenactment/living history events there are this side of the border in the UK, and I’d be delighted to see if we could get any further groups interested in attending, especially those interested in impressions of Royal Air Force units!

Trying to put together an early 1800s working class men’s wardrobe. Research has been a bit challenging due to most things I’m finding being either Upper Class or Military (Napoleonic/War of 1812). Anyone have any recommendations for good resources? I’m open to pretty much anything (books, YouTube videos, online articles, etc) I’m mostly focused on the US, but am willing to read up on anything involving the US or Western Europe.

Hi folks! I am looking to piece together Frederick the Greats uniform, specifically the one in the attached photos. I am looking for pretty much any help I can get as there doesn't seem to be many places selling accurate replicas of his full uniform or pieces of it. I am not adverse to DIY but I don't have any experience with clothing/fabrics so things like his overcoat I fear I might have to buy. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'll be traveling via airplane from Kansas to Texas and the TSA guidelines specify on steel toe boots, but unsurprisingly, do not go into boots with hob nails and heel irons. Does anyone have experience traveling with jack boots that have hobnails and heel irons in them?
I'd rather not lose my $300 At The Front leather boots to some TSA guy where they'll be auctioned off. I'll be in rattle snake country and they're fantastic for walking around.
I appreciate any advice or help you can provide. Thank you!

I use to do World War 2 reenactments around 15 years in Ohio as part of the 5th ID but stopped after I joined the Army and am looking to possibly get back into it. I have gear to do both medic, infantry, and an 81 MM mortar (sub calibered sleeve to 60mm for ease of munitions). Probably done over 250 public and tactical events to include the famous Conneaut DDay reenactments for around 10 years in a row. I have both years gear to include haversack and pistol belt and later war musette pack with cartridge belt, along with all the other assorted packs and accessories.

Hi all,
I’m looking to do a US Army Operation Desert Storm impression. I’m a female. I would like to do an accurate impression and am located in the US. If you could help me get uniform/gear ideas from online, that would be very helpful. Thanks.

Your recommendation don’t have to be reenactment based (though I would love those, too) but more ideas from a like minded group of people. We want to really meet Boston.
We will only be there for a Friday in early April so we also realize that it has the potential to be cold and off season.
We looked a little at Plimoth Patuxet. Battle ground are also possible
But where would like to go for really absorb Boston

Good morning, afternoon or evening ladies and gentlemen. It is October 25th. 82 years ago a newsreel was published to German theaters and an article made headlines across the Reich. The Volkssturm, Hitlers last line of defense, had been formed. From the coast of Danzig to the rolling Bavarian hills, against the French, British, Americans, Soviets, so and so forth man, woman and child clutched rifles and panzerfaust to try to stop the wave of enemy soldiers.
My impression is of a Zugführer (roughly equivalent in some way to a Lieutenant in Volkssturm-Bataillon 1/3 // Volkssturm-Bataillon 1/III // badisches Volkssturm-Bataillon III.
Civilian gas masket manual.
Soldbuch.
Heer HBT Top and bottom.
Volkssturm armband,
SS Belt buckle (stopgap)
West Wall Medal (pre war RAD service) Luftshuzt defense medal.
I’m currently purchasing an M38 officers side cap, Luftshuzt belt buckle, enlisted man’s belt and an ammo pouch. Next up will be a Breadbag and canteen.

I attended Helldorado Days in Tombstone with the Authentic Old West Living History Association. We portrayed the Tombstone Citizens’ Safety Committee and marched in the parade.

Adding a little update to my Prussian uniform today; I have made custom shouldboard buttons as I couldn’t find any fitting to the uniform.
I took screw on buttons apart, designed my own and resin printed them before printing them.
The Paletot also came in and fits perfectly, also fitted with silver buttons to match the uniform.
Next up will be the brocade belt for which I finally have all materials together.
Hope you enjoy!

Could someone familiar with the current state of reenacting the Great War let me know how healthy it is? Are there a decent number of events and units out there? I attended a GWA event way back in the Nineties (when I was in college) and still think about how cool it was.

Hello! I am a WWI AEF reenactor. I am currently portraying a US Marine serving in the 2nd Division who fought at Belleau Wood. Since I couldn't source a Marine Corps P1917 tunic, I am using an Army M1917 tunic instead.
I heard that the Marines actually wore U.S. Army uniforms due to supply issues in France. Is this historically true? And if so, how common was this practice during the battle?
