MOD Clarification: Rule #9 - Safety and Bite History

We've noticed some confusion regarding Rule #9: Safety and Bite History, specifically what constitutes as a bite history that would not be allowed to post here.

Rule #9 applies only when a dog has a known history of biting a person that resulted in the bite breaking or puncturing the person's skin.

A dog does not violate Rule #9 simply because they:

  • Have a history of mouthing or nipping
  • Have put their mouth on a person without breaking skin
  • Have made contact with someone's skin without causing a wound
  • Have snapped or air-snapped without making contact
  • Have bitten another animal
  • Have displayed fear, reactivity, resource guarding, or other behavioral concerns without a human bite that broke skin

For example; a documented incident in which a dog nipped someone's hand but did not break the skin does not, by itself, make the dog ineligible for a rehoming or networking post under Rule #9.

Conversely, a documented incident in which a dog bit a person and punctured their skin does fall under Rule #9, regardless of the breed of the dog or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This rule stands regardless of the situation the dog was in when it bit.

Please do not report a post under Rule #9 solely because a dog has bitten another animal or bitten a human without breaking skin. If a post contains rehoming a dog that has bitten a person and broke the skin, those can be reported.

MOD Community Update & Recent Changes

Hi everyone! The mod team has been hard at work on cleaning up and updating r/rescuedogs. The goal is to make the subreddit easier to use, easier to moderate consistently, and (most importantly) a better place for people working with rescued dogs.

We've made quite a few changes recently, so here's a quick overview.

šŸ“‹ Rules & Flair

We've rewritten and streamlined the subreddit rules to make them clearer and easier to follow. Please review them again before posting/commenting.

Some of the biggest changes include:

  • Be Civil now explicitly covers harassment and demeaning comments directed at both users and animals.
  • Stay On Topic now covers both off-topic posts and discussions that derail otherwise relevant threads.
  • Adoption/Foster/Rescue networking has been consolidated into a clearer format.
  • Donation and fundraising requirements have been updated, simplified, and clarified as well as added a disclaimer.
  • Pledge rules have been updated to make the process clearer.
  • No Spam has been updated to cover a broader range of abuse.
  • No Breed-Based Hate or Dog-Directed Harassment has been clarified.
  • Good-faith discussion about breeds and related topics is allowed, but inflammatory comments and attacks on breeds or individual dogs are not.
  • Safety & Bite History now focuses on dogs with a documented history of biting a person that drew blood, made more consistently enforcible, and added a disclaimer.
  • Outdated and redundant rules have been removed.

We've also cleaned up the post flairs and consolidated several categories to make choosing the appropriate flair easier, as well as adding an 'Outcome' flair for adoption posts that have had outcomes.

šŸ¤– Automod & Moderation

  • We've cleaned up the Automod configuration and removed a number of outdated or unnecessary rules and automated messages.
  • The welcome message has also been simplified. New users are now directed to review the rules and report rule-breaking content rather than engaging with it.
  • We've also standardized our saved responses for removals, bans, and common modmail questions so that moderation decisions can be communicated more consistently.

šŸ• Networking & Euthanasia Posts

  • We've updated the formatting requirements for adoption/foster/rescue pull, and euthanasia/deadline posts.
    • The goal is to make these posts easier for people to find and understand while keeping the process as simple as possible for the people doing the actual networking.
  • We've added an Outcome flair so that posts can be updated by OP when we know what happened to an animal.
  • Comments are now set to display oldest first, which should make it easier to follow updates on networking and urgent posts. Votes are also hidden for the first 60 minutes.

šŸ’° Donations & Pledges

  • We've clarified the requirements for donation requests and added a disclaimer that verification is not a guarantee or endorsement and that users are responsible for doing their own due diligence before donating.
  • A new form has been created to streamline donation plea requests.
  • We've also added saved modmail responses to help people who want to make donation requests understand the verification process.

šŸ”— Community Resources

  • We've updated the sidebar and added links to other communities and resources that may be useful for adoption, fostering, pet help, lost animals, and other situations that don't fit within r/rescuedogs.
  • We've also added the ability to sort posts by post flair, so users can tailor what they want to see.

šŸ’¬ Community Feedback

  • We're also reaching out to established members of the community, including people who have regularly used r/rescuedogs for rescue networking, to hear what has and hasn't been working.
  • We know that changes to a community are much more useful when they're informed by the people who actually use it, so if there's something you think we should know about, please feel free to send us a modmail.

This is an ongoing process. We don't expect to get everything perfect immediately, but we're committed to making r/rescuedogs a useful, welcoming place for people trying to help dogs in need.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck around, contributed, reported problems, networked dogs, fostered, adopted, or otherwise helped make this community what it is.

Adoption/Foster Plea Looking for a loving home or reputable rescue for our 3-year-old French Bulldog – Roanoke, VA

Hi everyone!

This is an incredibly difficult post for me to make, but my husband and I are exploring options for rehoming our 3-year-old French Bulldog, Frankie.

Frankie is genuinely the sweetest, most affectionate boy. He has such a big personality and an even bigger heart. He loves his rubber toys, going on walks, playing, cuddling, and especially finding a sunny spot to lie in. He is incredibly loving and has brought so much happiness into our lives.

Unfortunately, we've had a difficult year financially when it comes to his medical care. Back in June, Frankie accidentally swallowed part of a fabric toy and required emergency veterinary treatment. We had only recently finished paying off that expense when he developed bladder stones, requiring surgery that has left us with approximately $5,000 in additional veterinary debt.

He underwent surgery on October 21st to remove the bladder stones and was also neutered during the procedure. Thankfully, he is recovering well and is scheduled to have his sutures removed on November 2nd.

We are still waiting for the results of his bladder stone analysis to help determine what type of stones he developed, what may have caused them, and what preventative care he might need moving forward. He is currently on a veterinary-prescribed urinary diet, although we don't yet know whether that will be a lifelong requirement. He is also currently taking medications as part of his recovery.
Outside of these recent medical issues, Frankie has been a happy, energetic, and loving dog.

A little more about Frankie:

He is 3 years old and approximately 35 pounds.

He is now neutered.

He is extremely affectionate and loves being around people.

He loves rubber toys, walks, playing, and sunbathing.

He does well with cats and currently lives with one.

He enjoys other dogs, although his excitement can sometimes overwhelm them.

He has a lot of energy and loves to play and roughhouse.

He sometimes playfully nibbles, but he has never snapped at or bitten anyone aggressively.

We believe a home without young children would be best because of his high energy and playful nature.

My husband and I are both full-time college students and work full-time. We love Frankie more than anything and have always done everything we can to give him a wonderful life. However, after these unexpected medical expenses, we are worried about whether we can realistically afford any additional medical care he may need in the future.

This isn't a decision we're making because we don't want him anymore. Quite the opposite. He is spoiled rotten, loved beyond words, and truly part of our family. We just want to make sure he has the best possible future, even if that means it isn't with us.
We are not looking to rush this process. We are more than happy to continue caring for Frankie while he finishes his medications and fully recovers from surgery. We want to make sure he is comfortable, healthy, and ready before making any transition. The last thing we want is to add unnecessary stress while he's healing.

Our biggest priority is finding a safe, responsible, and loving home that understands French Bulldogs and is financially prepared for any future veterinary needs. We would strongly prefer to work with a reputable rescue or an organization that can help carefully screen potential adopters.

We are located in the Roanoke, Virginia area and are happy to provide veterinary records, photographs, and additional information about Frankie.

If anyone knows of a reputable French Bulldog rescue, has experience with the surrender process, or can point us toward trustworthy resources, we would be incredibly grateful.

This is heartbreaking for us, and we are trying to approach it as responsibly as possible. Frankie deserves nothing less than a wonderful life filled with love.

Thank you for reading. ā¤ļø

Grief How to deal with a sudden loss

My husband and I adopted our son Star in 2023 at 3 years old. He came with a lot more health issues than we were told he had (kidney disease, gallbladder disease, liver disease, chronic ear infections, allergies, polydipsia, and polyuria) but we fell in love with him and took as good care of him as we could. We worked diligently with regular vets and an internal medicine specialists for 3 years to stabilize him on a large medication regimen that made him comfortable and happy. Honestly we have a lot of debt from his medical care

In early October something changed after some medication changes and he didn’t seem right. We took him to the vet and they found a low grade heart murmur. We reversed the medication change and were waiting to see its impact before getting into see the cardiologist. He started showing signs of respiratory distress that weekend and he wasn’t well so my husband rushed him to the ER where they found out Star was in heart failure and his murmur had gotten a lot worse. I rushed home from a trip and we brought star home.

Star never got better, even after they got him through the first episode of heart failure. They told us with all of his concurrent issues, it was likely he would go into heart failure again, even if they could try and treat it. He did the next afternoon. We didn’t want him to suffer anymore, he had fought for so long and so hard all of his life. He had a really hard life before we adopted him.

I don’t know why I’m even writing this all out other than to say i cannot cope with this loss. We knew he was sick and would pass away one day, but we thought he would be old and gray. We simply weren’t ready. How am I supposed to get through this. How are we supposed to get through this. I miss him so much and I just feel like I can’t breathe every single day.

This isn’t my first time losing pets, my childhood dogs passed away at a nice old age. We don’t want kids. Star was our baby. He was with us in our first house together and there on the day we got married. It feels like no one understands how big of a loss this is to us.

Please arrive by 5 pm.

🩷 Daisy (A590408). Female, 7 years old, 67 lbs, spayed and heartworm negative. She is ready to go home with you the same day you adopt her 🄰🐶🩷.

Meet sweet Daisy! She is very friendly with people and has been paired with other similar sized dogs. She is currently sharing kennel 23 with Fiddle (neutered male dog).

She is energetic, affectionate and playful. She is loose/wiggly in kennel and allows leashing. In yard, she seeks social with handler. She is a great candidate for playgroups.

Daisy has a lot of energy and loves to zoom around the play yards. She acts all tough with other dogs through the fence, but wants to be friends with them when there is no barrier between them.

When volunteers take her out she's got to run and run to use up her excess energy before she comes over for affection and pets. Daisy needs an adopter with a lot of energy and preferably a yard to run in. And a tall fence because she can climb very well for a 7-year old.

We are hoping to find an energetic person with no small animals or children to take this beauty home.

Please share Daisy with friends and family and on all your social media platforms for the best forever home ever šŸ”šŸ©·šŸ¶.

Rescue Stories From chains to their own playground. Watching our rescue dogs learn how to play is the best feeling ever

Hello! We are PƤite Loomapark - animals shelter & Mini-Zoo & Rehabilitation center from Ida-Virumaa, Estonia. We have around 300 rescued wild and domestic animals in our shelter.

Most of the dogs we take in come from pretty heartbreaking situations. The vast majority of them were kept on short, heavy chains their entire lives. They were never walked, never socialized.

For the longest time, our biggest dream was to build a proper, enclosed playground for them—a safe space where they could finally just be dogs. After a lot of hard work - we finally made it happen! Seeing them on the new playground is pure magic. Watching dogs who only knew a two-meter radius of dirt suddenly doing goofy zoomies, tumbling around, and smiling is the most rewarding thing in the world.

Please, tell us if this repost is not welcome, we are sorry!

Advice I think I just found my new forever pal.

Thumbnail

1.0k Upvotes

I thought after losing my beloved daschund I would never have the nerve to try for another little pal. Well after some research this little fellow astro caught my eye.

He was at a shelter nearby and I decided to go check him out but before I got hung up on him I wanted to check out other dogs first and really think again if this is what I really needed in my life.

I knew I wanted a dog a little bigger in size and slightly older. This little guy is 4 years old.

After looking over all the other dogs. His demeanor and striking look still caught my eye. I asked the shelter worker questions as to why he hasn't been picked yet since he's so beautiful and calm. I would assume his coloring and being a Pembroke Corgi and Australian shepherd mix would make him a no brainer since they're such popular cute breeds.

My only concern was maybe there's something I'm not seeing, as I have cats at home and a 4 year old son (of which has been taught to treat animals with care and caution).

We asked to see him and as soon as we had some time with him I felt something. I didn't want to immediately become attached and still constantly asked questions and get a bigger picture of the dogs past and behavior. From what I observed I really loved, he was patient , kind , and just wanting love and a family.

He came home with me last night and after a much needed brush and bath his true temperament came through. He listened and knew some basic commands stayed by my side at all times knew his name and walked very well on a leash.

Introducing him to the cats wasn't as difficult as I thought as my cats are very welcoming. They puffed up and tried to be intimidating but after one day we were all in harmony.

He is a bit overweight and after some observations I've noticed he's way more interested in human food than his own and is very sneaky and tries to jump to eat human food. That's the only thing I have to work with him on in which I ask of y'all what would be some good advice for breaking this habit.

I will end with this, after one day I believe astro is the best friend who needed a home and family. And I was happy to give him that in exchange for kisses and love !

Advice Help Me Help My Traumatized Dog

I recently adopted a 6-year-old female black Lab mix with a difficult past, and she seems to be stuck in a state of fear and shutdown. I’m looking for advice on how to help her feel safe, regulate her nervous system, and eventually learn to trust us.
Her backstory
We don’t know much about the beginning of her life, but she was adopted from a shelter and ran away just two days later. She spent 65 days lost in the forest. When she was finally found, her owner no longer wanted her, so she was rehomed.
She lived with her next owner for about a year until that person suddenly passed away. She was left in a neighbor’s care for six weeks. We don’t know what happened during that time, but when the person who originally rescued her came to check on her, she found her hiding in a laundry room, shaking terribly and surrounded by soiled pee pads.
She was then placed in a foster home for two months. Her fosters took two trips during that time, including one that lasted two weeks, but she did make some progress while in their care.
Where she is now
I adopted her a little over a week ago. I understand the two-week shutdown period and the 3-3-3 rule, but I’m hoping for advice on how to help her feel safe and begin healing.
When she first arrived, she jumped on the couch and barely moved for three days. On day five, my husband was able to pick her up after a walk and help her into the crate we had set up in our bedroom.
She now spends almost all her time in her crate, coming out only for one or two walks a day if I can coax her out. She will eat and drink when I bring her bowls directly to where she’s lying, but otherwise, she may go long periods without eating or drinking unless she’s alone or it’s nighttime.
She is extremely skittish around sudden noises and movements. She is especially afraid of men and cautious around everyone else. She trembles when we get too close, although she’s becoming a little more comfortable with me. She’s still afraid of my husband and sometimes my 9-year-old.
When she feels threatened, she freezes completely and becomes stiff as a statue. She has shown no signs of aggression and is incredibly gentle with everyone.
We’ve had a few small breakthroughs! She has occasionally walked around the house, slightly wagged her tail on walks, and seems to enjoy jogging. Sometimes she refuses to go for a walk, even when I know she needs to relieve herself. She also doesn’t seek out affection or closeness with anyone yet.
Her current routine
Morning: I offer breakfast and water, followed by a walk to relieve herself.
Daytime: She rests alone in her crate for several hours. Sometimes I sit nearby and offer her water or toss her pieces of Vienna sausage, which is her favorite treat, although she isn’t very food-motivated.
Evening: I offer a second meal, water, and another walk, depending on what she feels comfortable doing.
Sometimes she eats and goes outside, and sometimes she doesn’t. During the day, it’s usually just the two of us at home while my husband travels for work and my daughter is at school.
What I’m doing to help her
Using a pheromone diffuser
Offering calming chews
Keeping interaction minimal and low-pressure
Providing a covered crate with the door left open
Playing treat-tossing games
Trying to move at her pace and let her make the decisions whenever possible
I plan to contact our vet soon about a behavioral consultation and whether medication might help her.
I would love advice from anyone who has worked with a severely fearful or shut-down rescue dog. What helped your dog begin to feel safe? Were there specific routines, exercises, or approaches that made a difference? How did you know they were starting to trust you?
I know healing takes time, and I’m not expecting an overnight transformation. I just want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to help her feel safe enough to finally relax and enjoy life.
My hope is that one day she’ll seek out affection, enjoy car rides, learn to play, and truly feel like a member of our family.
Advice, encouragement, and success stories are all welcome. Thank you!

Advice Foster-to-adopt

Post image
121 Upvotes

Long story short, I was/am wanting a dog to keep my dog company. He has terrible anxiety when we leave the apartment and he’s always been used to having somebody there with him or another dog since I’ve had him. He’s 11 years old, schnauzer mix so pretty small and slightly slower paced. I found another senior dog, 11 years old, slightly larger that we are doing a deferred adoption for. He’s such a sweetie, gets along well with my schnauzer, and has done excellent. The only problem I have is that he has some lumps that they’ve explained are fatty tumors according to an MRI. It’s pretty large, and he’s slightly overweight so we want to take him for walks and give him some joint supplements to help his mobility. My worry is whether I’m being selfish by wanting to keep him knowing I cannot afford to get these lumps removed let alone do a biopsy to make sure they’re non cancerous. He was in the shelter for almost two months so I don’t know if it’s better for him to stay here in hopes his life will be better or take him back im hopes someone with the funds could help give him a better life. Am I being selfish for wanting to keep him?

Rescue Stories Found her as a tiny puppy under construction debris. Meet Lilu, the slipper thief who guards our whole neighborhood

This is Lilu. My girlfriend and I found her at a construction site. She was a tiny puppy, lying under a pile of debris. We only planned to foster her, but there was one problem: we live in a small rented apartment where pets aren’t allowed. So for a while we kept her secret from our landlord. Eventually we came clean and, luckily, we managed to work things out. Since then we’ve had her spayed and treated for all her health problems. She’s learned a ton of commands, and she’s become the self-appointed guardian of our neighborhood. She always stands up for us. She sleeps with us every night, and she gets really sad when we leave, even if it’s just for an hour. But my favorite thing: whenever we go out, she collects our stuff and brings it onto the couch. Usually it’s one of my slippers and one of my girlfriend’s. Then she curls up with them and sleeps there until we come home. From a puppy under the rubble to the queen of our home ā¤ļø

Outcome A groomer who…

Post image
88 Upvotes

He was dropped off outside of a shelter that has deadlines. The previous owner brought him to me every 2 weeks for a bath/haircut rotation.

My coworker brought her phone with a picture of him and asked is this Milo.

Milo was dropped off in a cage outside of a shelter by himself all night. Not even an identification of who he is was left.

The nameless dog sat. I called the shelter crying and let them know his name in the very least. I gave the old owners number unknowing if Milo got out and was turned in. Or if they could take responsibility for the dog I’ve come to love. A lot.

Grooming is more than the money. It’s my passion but the dogs become apart of me and my life as well.

The shelter called back and gave the nameless dog a name, Milo. After confirming it was him the old owner agreed to sign over the surrender papers.

This made it so my boss who runs a rescue could pick him up instead of making him wait the 10 days of confinement and keep him longer.

Milo spent 3 days in an unknown place.

They said he did not walk on a leash well after I said well does he walk himself with the leash.

Today he was brought back to the store I work at by the shelter. My boss told him to go to his room, like I usually tell him every 2 weeks. Today I let him out of his room and put a slip lead on him where he tried to walk me to the bath tub per usual.

A dog once kept at an inch long who hasn’t seen me in a month and a half looked at me as the familiar face he trusts after three days of the unknown, matted.

His appointment to be set up to be groomed will be this week. Paid for by me, done by me.

And today Milo got a good food, treats, a stuffy, a new bed, leash and collar.

Today Milo got his new start of what could have ended on a deadline.

This dog supported my life/life style over his care. Until it didn’t.

But for me it was more than that.

It was sitting there with him on my lap because he knew I will always make sure he has a room. If I wasn’t over the pet limits for my apartment his room would be with me.

Thankfully he has some special people watching over him and he was saved. šŸ’–šŸ„¹

ā€œThe kids didn’t want him anymoreā€.

Rescue Stories He's the best boi

Thumbnail
gallery
299 Upvotes

This is my dog Archie.

He was rescued from a dog meat farm in January 2025.

I met him at an animal shelter where I volunteered at the end of April.

Back then he was very reactive and would bite people.

He was also extremely sensitive and so stressed that he would pull out his own fur.

The shelter decided he needed a quiet space, so he was kept in a storage room while they looked for a foster home for him.

After finishing my volunteer work, I would sometimes spend extra time with him.

One day, he finally let me pet him, and I decided to foster him.

There’s a long story behind how fostering turned into adoption, but long story short, he became mine.

Archie is my very first dog and it wasn't easy to domesticate him.

He once bit me real bad on my fingers and arms I ended up in the hospital for 3 days.

But my boyfriend(current husband) and I didn't give up on him.

Archie has been part of my family since July 2025, and look at how far he’s come!

Some of his achievements so far:

(1) City Patrol Dog

The city I live in has a program where dogs can qualify to help with local patrol activities after passing an assessment. Archie has been the top performer for three months in a row.

(2) Well-Mannered Dog Program

He passed the first stage of our city’s program, which is similar to the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. If he passes the 2nd stage, he is officially an accredited well-mannered dog in the city.

With enough love and time any dog can be a good boi and a good girl.

Also, there's this dog called Dongbu who's moving to a Canadian foster home very soon.

He's a dog a friend of mine rescued a year ago. He's a mid size(11kg) dog, a terrier mix just like my dog. He's very easily frightened but loves treats.

Advice 1 Month Mark: Hoarding Rescue, severe anxiety & just looking for some hopefulness :)

Hey y’all, I have the absolute cutest pup—Beulah. She came from a severe hoarding situation, was rescued in April and has been in 3 separate shelters since then. We adopted her on October 1st, and have been setting a routine with her, letting her have her space, and rewarding her with treats. I adore her and will take all the time she needs, but I’ve never had a dog that is scared of being pet before. It seems she’s basically feral, and I don’t push it with her, but her only reaction to an attempted pet is to try and run away. She takes treats from my hands and sits next to me no problem. I don’t want to rush anything, don’t want her to feel trapped, but if you’ve had a dog like this I have 2 questions:

1.) How did you teach your pup to play with you? She has a number of toys she plays with on her own but I would love to play with her.

2.) If you’ve had a dog that doesn’t want any affection, how did it go?

We have her on gabapentin because her anxiety is so bad that she has trouble going to the bathroom outside if there is ANYONE or ANY NOISES around, and are also going to get her started on Prozac. This is not a replacement for training, but merely to get her anxiety baseline which is at an 8, down to hopefully a 5!

I guess I could just use some hopeful stories. I'm giving this girl all the time and space she needs, but in the meantime, it'd be lovely to read stories of how far you've come with your rescue!
