Author Getting the dreaded "KDP Print Previewer Error" email? Here are the 3 most common reasons Amazon rejects your interior file.
As a professional typesetter, I get messages every week from indie authors who are stuck in "KDP upload purgatory." You format your book, upload the PDF, wait hours for it to process, and then get hit with an automated email saying you need to fix your margins or bleed.
If your manuscript keeps getting bounced back by Amazon's review bots, here are the three most common culprits and how to fix them today:
1. The "Gutter Margin" Trap (Your inside margin is too small) Many authors set up a single, standard margin for their whole document (like 0.5" all around). But KDP requires the inside margin (the gutter next to the spine) to increase based on your total page count. A 100-page book and a 400-page book require completely different inside margins because thicker books curve more deeply into the binding. The Fix: Check your final page count. If your book is getting thick, you may need to increase that inside gutter margin up to 0.875" so your text doesn't get swallowed by the spine.
2. The Bleed Settings Mismatch Bleed is the extra 0.125 inches you add to the edges of your document if you want images or background colors to print all the way to the edge of the page. The most common mistake is checking the "Bleed" box in your KDP dashboard, but uploading a PDF that is exactly the trim size (e.g., exactly 6x9).The Fix: If your interior is just plain text, do NOT check the bleed box on KDP. If you have full-page images and need bleed, your PDF page size must be 0.25" taller and 0.125" wider than your trim size. (And remember, KDP never adds bleed to the inside spine edge!)
3. Unembedded Fonts If you are exporting your PDF from Microsoft Word, this is likely what flagged your file. KDP requires every font you used to be "embedded" directly into the PDF code. If a font isn't embedded, KDP's printers don't know how to draw the letters, and they will reject the file. The Fix: If you are using Word, don't just "Print to PDF." Go to your Save As or Export settings, look for the "PDF Options," and make sure the box for "Bitmap text when fonts may not be embedded" or "Embed all fonts" is checked. If you are using InDesign, this is usually handled automatically in standard Print PDF exports.
Hope this helps you get your books published and out of the draft folder!
