How long from Hydrocal mold to cast latex?

Post image
3 Upvotes

This is my first time making a latex mask. I’ve successfully made a Hydrocal plaster mold and pulled the clay from the inside. My question now is do I have to wait for the mold to cure even further before I cast latex, and how long could that be? I waited about an hour before opening the mold. It’s room temperature now but still a little moist. thanks for your tips in advance!

Can I make facial prosthetics that are more reuseable and durable? Or is this completely impossible?

I’ve seen haunted houses use full or half face foam or silicone prosthetics, but I’ve been told that these last only a handful of uses, like, less than 10 times. Is there anything I can do to make these at least useable for one haunt season (15+ times)? Certain materials I can use that last longer, and glue that won’t ruin the material? I make my own sculptures and molds, so it won’t be a huge deal if I have to re-cast each year, but I don’t want to re-cast and paint prosthetics more than once a season.

Makeup airbrush

Does anyone here use a makeup airbrush for their makeup? I'm wanting to do sfx and horror style makeup and want to try with face pants and airbrushing (especially since the haunted house I work at uses). Does anyone have a good rec for an airbrush kit? I wanted something easy/simple

Any tips for my siren makeup?

It’s my first time using liquid latex and heavier makeup in general, not a huge makeup user but wanted to get into the spirit for Halloween. Going for a more eerie/unsettling but still seductive (as sirens do lol) vibe!

How would I recreate this SFX makeup by Elena Samko?

My main concerns with this is 1. How would I make it look like I have no nose? And 2. Since the scar goes around the face rather than over the eye how could I see in this?

To make my nose less obvious I’d have to build up the rest of the face but how? Also since the scars don’t go across the eyes but rather around the face how would I maintain visibility?

I’m a beginner so I’d love advice from anyone who knows about special effects makeup and what this cosplayer may have done, Thank you!!!

Help needed

My son wants to be super original for Halloween and has decided that his passion for rubix cubes must come into his Halloween costume. I’ve sourced some small keychain versions of them but he wants one sticking out of his head like it’s perforated his skin and it’s stuck in there. Different I know.
How would I get this to stay? Specific sticky stuff I can make a small square stick to his head? 😭😂

Please help, because this is the only thing he wants to do and I need to source products!
Many many thanks!

CLAYFACE SPOILERS Spoiler

I just got done watching clay face for the second time in theaters, and I finally got some pictures of my favorite prosthetic that he wears in the whole movie. It’s such a beautiful piece, but we barely get to see it at all, which is such a bummer :[
Thought I would share it here

Stabbed eye makeup

Hi guys I am working on doing a looking where I make it look like there is an object impaled in my eye, and I was wondering if anybody had a video tutorial that covers something similar to that? I have a moderate amount of sfx makeup experience so I know all the materials I am pretty sure I could do it, but was wondering if there was a video out there that covered this just to make sure I am doing everything correctly? Thanks!

(to clarify I don't mean my actual eyeball, more like a closed eye, sorry if thats vague 😭)

Ideas for pre-making a set of fake stitches for fast application?

I'm trying to make a set of fake stitches around my neck for an event. It doesn't need to be bloody or super realistic. I'm fairly new to this kind of SFX so I'm trying to avoid needing an extra 30 minutes of setting it up the morning of the event. I've been trying to find a DIY way to prep this ahead of time and take ideally less than ten minutes to apply. None of my ideas have worked out well so far, but I can't tell if there's an obvious solution I'm missing or if it's just my own inexperience making it fail.

My ideas so far: - necklace: use two strands of fishing line and attach pieces of cord to upper and lower line to mimic stitches (can't find a good way to attach cord) - necklace: use one strand of fishing line and hot glue pieces of cord overtop (works better, and hot glue can mimic entry points for stitches, but still not working well) - classic tissue paper wound with fake skin thick enough to stitch through (haven't figured out how to prep this ahead of time, and without being able to pre-paint it it seems like it would take time to blend it decently with makeup) - just drawing it on with makeup (I don't know that I could do this decently in ten minutes) - using school glue/paper maché glue to layer on the skin, cut, and sew through (still workshopping this one, but if it doesn't reattach well after being removed, this is also a no-go) - maybe making a temporary tattoo? It won't have the dimension but it would at least be fast. - attaching each stitch with eyelash glue/spirit gum (would work if I could find a way to do this quickly) - making a small strand of paper maché scar line, maybe even forming it around a piece of cord, and attaching cord to that (concerned about it drying too stiffly, but going to try making a prototype) - my next idea is trying to shape some DIY petroleum-jelly-and-flour scar putty to make a scar line around my throat and try to either sew through additional scar putty or attach the cord directly to the putty. I've never worked with scar putty before so I have no idea if the texture could support this.

This is the stuff I've come up with from things I have around the house. I don't currently have liquid latex, gelatin, rigid colloidon, or spirit gum, but I'm starting to wonder if those are my only options. This is my first time working with prosthetics - is there something I'm missing? Am I going about this completely wrong?

My job isn’t too crazy, I just need to see enough but I can’t really picture HOW blurry it would be. I just want a cool pair to work in as I can’t do any makeup but these are allowed. Have no idea what else would be cool enough on their own if not the full white out ones. Suggestions welcome! Ty!

Advice for beginner doing "needle stuck in forehead" sfx

Hello! I have zero prior experience, but need to do some special effects for my student film. I'd like to do a needle poking out ~1-2cm from a pimple patch on the actor's forehead.

Could I get advice on what products/techniques I need to achieve this + tips on working with darker skin tones as well? Thank you!

Any tips on making her look a bit more moldy lol this dog is a saint (ASFX)

Going as a clicker with my helper to a Halloween event we’ve done SFX together a few times and she stands well and doesn’t seem to mind it much nor attempts to bug the prosthetics I put on her we use nontoxic makeup meant for kids. Main question is making her appear a little bit mouldy or fungus infected. I think I did an OK job but the face could use some work. We just use a little mixture of Elmers glue white Crayola paint and eyeshadow to get the shade we have now so it makes her look a little bit wet and moldy, avoiding her muzzle so she doesn’t accidentally eat it

Art the Clown progress

After many setbacks (including accidentally shattering the original sculpt), Art is almost ready! Yesterday I cast it in silicone for the first time. Took a lot of post processing, trimming, and some nose editing due to it getting squished in the mold making process, but the first one came out better than expected! In the last picture, you can see I'm casting a few, due to their tendency to rip when taken off.

Plaster mold, and the prosthetic is silicone mixed with white acrylic paint, with a bit of white clay foam that still needs to be blended in to fix the nose.

Then you can see the teeth! Thermoplastic base, resin teeth attached with a strong uv nail glue, painted in alcohol based markers and covered in a layer of vaguely red tinted UV resin (probably could've gone more red tbh).

I'll be wearing him tonight to a party, and then again to Spooky Empire next weekend, so I'll take lots of pictures! Samantha Scaffidi and Amelie McClain are gonna be at this con, so I'm very excited to debut my second version of Art the Clown there.

If anyone has any suggestions for painting the black on the silicone, I'm all ears! I'm thinking just doing regular makeup on it tonight, but hoping to paint it on more permanently for the con to avoid accidental transfer.

Thanks for reading!
