These were sold to me as Australian Amano shrimps. They were transparent when I got them but suddenly I saw one of them turned black? Could this have been a hitch hiker?

I've been gone for a few days and have noticed that this shrimpy looks extra plump 🤔 It's hard to get a picture of their backside but it looks like eggs, I just didn't think it would happen that fast... unless it's something else? I can't tell if I should be excited or anxious especially since I've been gone for a few days 😭

Recorded the first time my Vampire Shrimp and Bamboo Shrimp interacted and it did not go as expected😭 I thought these shrimp were peaceful.. They do no damage to each other though

Btw I am aware of the wound that my vampire shrimp has. Hes doing fine^^ (failed molt, so a part of the exoskeleton is missing but he molted succesfully 2x after the failed molt, but exoskeleton did not grow back)

Cherry shrimp slowly dying, params look fine. Running out of ideas

Hello everyone,

Need some help here as I'm running out of ideas on why my shrimp keep dying. Here's everything I know:

**Tank setup**

- 15 gallons, set up May 2026

- Canister filter, heater set to 22 °C

- Planted with a Monte Carlo carpet, plenty of algae

- Lights 6 hrs/day (9am–3pm); have a CO2 system but it's not running

**Current parameters (Oct 2026)**

- Ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 0

- GH 5, KH 5, pH 7.6 (GH/KH steady at 5)

- Copper test: negative

- No room sprays or pesticides used in the house

**Water source**

- Tap water: GH 7, KH 7, pH 7.6

- Water changes: 4 L per week with tap water, dechlorinated with Seachem Prime

**Current livestock**

- Phoenix rasbora ×9

- Otocinclus ×2

- Pygmy corydoras ×3

- Cherry shrimp ×1 (that I can see)

- Amano shrimp ×1

**The losses**

- Cherry shrimp are dying slowly and steadily, not all at once

- Sightings went from 6–7, to 3–4 in mid-October, to just 1 now

- I added 10 more cherry shrimp in September and haven't seen any of them since

- Bought 3 Amanos: one died the day after I added it, another after about 2 months

- 2 nerite snails also died: one lasted about 2 months, the other about 1 month

- Relatively fish are mostly fine (lost 1 cory and 3 rasboras over 2 months)

What am I missing? Any ideas on what could be killing the shrimp and snails while the fish are mostly okay relatively?

Question What homemade food can I use to attract all my shrimp to one spot in my 92-litre aquarium?

Hi everyone! I have a 92-litre aquarium, and I'd like to get my shrimp to come out of their hiding places and gather in one spot so I can see them more often.

Here are the inhabitants of my aquarium:

  • Around 12 harlequin rasboras.
  • Around 18 neon tetras.
  • 6 bronze corydoras (Corydoras aeneus).
  • 2 albino peppered corydoras (Corydoras paleatus).
  • Red Cherry shrimp.
  • Amano shrimp.
  • 1 female pearl gourami.

Equipment and plants:

  • Seachem Tidal 55 filter.
  • Sera 100 W heater.
  • Chihiros B-Series light with app control.
  • Bacopa crenata.
  • Vallisneria.
  • Java fern.
  • Limnobium.
  • A large piece of driftwood where many shrimp hide.
  • Java moss.

The problem is that many of my shrimp hide among the driftwood, moss and plants, so I hardly ever see them during the day.

I'd like to know if there is any food I can prepare at home, for example, by boiling a vegetable and then attaching it to a stick or skewer and placing it at the bottom of the aquarium. The idea is to encourage the shrimp to come out and gather in the same spot.

Which homemade foods work best for attracting shrimp? If possible, I'd love a top 10 list of homemade foods that are safe for both Red Cherry and Amano shrimp, taking into account the fish they share the aquarium with.

I'd also like to know which food tends to attract them the most and how long I can safely leave it in the aquarium without affecting water quality.

Thanks!

Question Who is this fellow?

Hi all,

I thought I only had red cherry shrimp and amano shrimp in my tank, but this little stripy guy/gal doesn't look like either. I'm not expecting any breeding recombinations either, as I only had 3 cherry shrimp (of which two died/were eaten) and 4 amanos (which don't breed in freshwater).

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Question Wtf happened to my shrimp?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, I have a 26.5-liter (7-gallon) aquarium with a built-in rear sump filter.

I have one female betta, one ampularia, and two Neocaridina shrimp (one of them has died minutes ago).

My nitrite and ammonia levels are close to zero, and my pH is between 7.0 and 7.5.

Tonight, I noticed a white, ghost-like exoskeleton in the tank, and then I found the body of one of my shrimp, apparently missing its head.

I’m not sure whether it had trouble molting or if my betta attacked it. I think the betta attacking it is unlikely because she has always completely ignored the shrimp.

I still have one shrimp alive.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Could this have been a failed molt, or is it possible that the shrimp died for another reason and was partially eaten afterward? Any advice would be appreciated!

Sorry about the potato photos. I have seen some black ones on here before. Was feeding the kids today (was originally 5 orange and 5 yellow - now due to excessive kinky time somewhere around 50 if not more) and noticed one that was clear. Thought that was kinda cool. Nex minnit there’s a black one then a bigger black one. So apparently both variations are cause by inbreeding leading to throwbacks in colour? I thought it was pretty interesting. Certainly adds to the variance in the tank.

Hello!
I got my first bamboo shrimp as a stowaway in a plant, but I love her, so decided to get another one today.
For no reason whatsoever I thought my first one was a male, called it Ernesto (which is still her name), could I please have help with this new one?

Question Marble Wood Shrimp vs Bamboo Shrimp

We’ve had a marble wood shrimp for awhile and just got a regular bamboo shrimp from the same store and I’m really surprised at the behavior differences despite all of the research I have telling me they’re basically the same.

Our marble wood shrimp was hiding at the pet shop in a piece of wood when we got it and was hard for the worker to scoop out because he kept swimming away and hiding. When we got him home he immediately swam away quickly to a hiding spot. He’s mostly hid in pieces of wood and decor since we got it and rarely comes out in view even when he’s feeding he hides. He’s had successful molts and seems to be eating regularly with his fan filters so I’m not too stressed about his behavior.

The bamboo shrimp has been much more social, he feeds next to my neos and amanos, is out in the open, and hasn’t hid much at all since we got it. Even at the store he didn’t swim away when the worker was scooping him and happily fell into the net when she went to grab him. Super docile and a chiller all around.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience or knows any more unique differences between these shrimp besides just the color and name because the personalities are a stark difference but I’m not sure if that’s just unique to my shrimp or the kind of shrimp they are?

Thank you in advance and happy shrimp keeping to all!

Sf_aquatics warning

Thumbnail

Hello, just a heads up (if this isn't already common knowledge): this is how Sf_aquatics is sending out 'blue velvet' shrimp right now. Sometimes not blue and with bonus worms. Messaged them last night - haven't heard back yet but I wanted to at least save anyone else considering using them some trouble, because if these had been for my established community tank I'd have lost a three year old colony. Thankfully, I'd set up a tank specifically for these shrimp. I've had to dip six of the 20 so far since they arrived Friday and the rust spot on the (random) snowball they sent in this blue velvet order is caving in.
