Announcement Weekly Reminder: Rules and FAQ - October 25, 2026 (Now with updates!)

Below you will find a weekly reminder of our Rules and partial FAQ. It's definitely a long read, but it's worth your time, especially if you are new to the community, or dropping by as a result of a link you found elsewhere. We periodically revise our rules, this weekly notice will help keep you informed of any changes made.

NOTE: These rules are guidelines. Some moderation discretion is to be expected.

Community Rules

1. Kindness Matters

Advise, don't criticize.

  • Post with empathy, thoughtfulness, and constructive commentary rather than judgment. Don't be an asshole.
  • Name-calling, slurs (including gender or race based slurs), and insults towards other community members will not be tolerated. Do not attack others for their personally held values, custody situation, marital status, physical distance from stepkids, or economic status; or on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ethnicity.
  • No name-calling toward children, including the above-mentioned insults or the term "skids", or terms such as "mini-wife" or "mini-husband."
  • Comments advocating spanking or any mention of wanting to harm children are not allowed.
  • This is a support sub, not a judgement sub, assholes are not tolerated. Comments with terms used in other subs to pass judgement on assholes will be removed.

2. No Drama

This is a support sub.

  • Bickering, nitpicking, and thread derailment will not be tolerated and will be subject to removal at moderator discretion.
  • Do not repeatedly badger a poster demanding answers, or refuse to acknowledge an answer that's already been given.
  • Do not use sensitive issues from past posts (either from this sub or other subs) to attack another user, as we are all discussing vulnerable topics.
  • Crossposting anything from /r/stepparents to any other subreddit might result in a ban and may result in the original thread being locked. Brigading our sub will result in an immediate ban.

3. Report, Don’t Rant

No backseat modding.

  • If you see someone breaking the rules, report the post or comment to the mods rather than engaging them in an argument. Failure to do so may be subject to comment removal at moderator discretion.
  • No meta posts complaining about rude comments, DMs, or general sub issues.
  • If you think someone is a troll or previously banned user, either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.

4. No Naming & Shaming

No userpings or links.

  • Tagging/pinging users or other subreddits in an attempt to bully, harass, or complain will not be tolerated. Do not tag other subs, ever.
  • If you want to complain about another subreddit being hostile to stepparents, do not name the subreddit. "Other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice.

5. No Platitudes

Nobody knew what they were getting into.

  • Comments like "You knew what you were getting into", "Love them, love their kids!", "They're a package deal!" and "You have to love them like your own!" will be removed.
  • Comments suggesting that OP is not cut out for stepparenting will be removed at moderator discretion.
  • Comments like "This is just a part of parenting, deal with it!" will be removed at moderator discretion.

6. No Trolling

We have zero tolerance for trolls.

  • This is a support sub. Our subscribers do not have the time, nor inclination, to provide support to internet trolls. Posts that are suspected to be trolling attempts will be immediately removed, and the poster banned.
  • Concern trolling, devil's advocating, gish-galloping, sealioning, and general asshattery are subject to immediate removal and banning without warning or notice.
  • Any attempt to circumvent the ban by creating a new username will be reported to reddit admins and possibly result in account suspension.

7. No Personally Identifiable Information

Use discretion when posting.

  • We highly recommend using a separate account for support subs to help prevent being doxxed. Do not post any information that may allow others to figure out your identity.
  • Do not post photos of children, or any other photo that could be used to identify you or another user on the sub.
  • Any image that contains a name or other identifying information should have the name or identifying information blurred out. This includes drawings, notes, and screenshots.
  • Do not link to social media or any articles/blogs where you or another user on the sub is mentioned by name.

8. No More than 2 Posts per 24 hours

Use the daily threads.

  • We are not a huge sub, but we are no longer a small sub. If you have multiple grievances to air, use the daily discussion threads instead of multiple posts.

9. Follow Reddiquette

Remember the human.

  • Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
  • Read it in full here.
  • Downvoting is reserved for comments that don’t contribute, and shouldn't be used to indicate disagreement.
  • If you believe someone is in violation of the subreddit rules, please either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.
  • Suspected brigading will be reported to reddit admins.

10. No Porn, Spam, Blogs, or Research Studies/Surveys Without Mod Approval

Just don't.

  • This is a SFW subreddit. Posting pornography will result in immediate post removal and permanent ban.
  • Advertising on the subreddit (outside of Reddit's own advertising) is not allowed.
  • No personal blog posts are allowed without express moderator permission.
  • No advertising without prior mod approval.
  • No asking for money/posting fundraisers/etc.
  • For links to parenting research studies or surveys, please message the mods for permission before posting.

11. Disputes in Modmail Only

Don't argue with the mods on the sub.

  • Any issues specifically related to how a mod is moderating should be addressed to the full moderating team via mod mail. This ensures that all mods are aware of any concerns and prevents disintegration of the topic thread at hand.
  • This means to do not message or send chat requests to individual mods. All discussion and complaints about mod actions need to be done in mod mail ONLY. Failure to follow this rule can result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • Comments in threads asking about mod decisions are subject to removal without notice.

12. Moderator Actions

We aren't kidding.

  • Users are expected to know the rules before posting. If you are warned or banned for violating the rules, ignorance is not an excuse.
  • Moderators will remove posts and comments and/or lock threads in accordance with the rules above. Typically this happens when threads have gone off-topic in a way that is not productive for the OP, or comments overall have become contentious or disrespectful.
  • If a poster continues to argue or to willfully violate these rules, temporary and permanent ban procedures will be followed. Any attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban. User bans will not be discussed in the sub. Questions posted about user bans are subject to removal and the poster subject to warning/ban procedures. The mod team will not discuss a specific user ban with anyone other than the user involved.
  • New accounts are subject to manual approval until they are no longer deemed "new" by the mod team. This helps to weed out trolls and ban evaders.
  • We rely on Automoderator to scan for specific words and phrases that are not welcome here and notify the mod team to review the comment or post. This includes slurs of any type and platitudes such as "Love them as your own!"
  • The mod team uses a combination of blacklisting and banning when dealing with trolls.
  • We employ the use of a bot that automatically bans anyone who comments in subs that have historically harassed our users. If you are picked up by the bot for telling trolls to get fucked, reach out via mod mail and we'll get you sorted out.
  • The rules above as well as ban procedures are considered guidelines only; some deviation may be necessary on a case by case basis and/or at the mod team's discretion.

13. Ban Procedure

These actions are at moderator discretion.

  • Pornography will result in an automatic permanent ban.
  • Extremely egregious content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • You may receive a 7 or 30 day temporary ban for first and second rule violations, depending upon severity.
  • Continued rule violations will result in a permanent ban.
  • Willful attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban.
  • We recognize the reddit site-wide rules of using alt names to get around bans and will ban those as well as report them to reddit admins.

FAQ - About the Rules

What does Kindness Matters mean?

  • Shortest version? Don't be an asshole. People come here for support and advice, they do not come here to be yelled at or told they are the reason everything is going sideways. There are ways to point out that someone may want to do some reflection on their own actions and reactions without being an asshole about it.
  • The purpose of this subreddit is to provide support and a sense of belonging for struggling stepparents. We aren't here to pass judgement, but rather to offer support, empathy, and constructive commentary. That does not include "hard truths" or "tough love." Stepparents get enough of that in every other subreddit, we're not passing it out here. Be respectful.
  • Remember, most people aren't going to come to a sub like this when everything is going great and everyone is getting along. People are coming here when they are down, when they are feeling defeated and stretched to the limit. Kicking someone when they are down is shitty behavior and we don't tolerate it.

What about being kind to the kids?

  • "Won't somebody think of the children?" Pearl clutching isn't needed here. If you read the Kindness Matters rule closely, you will see that there is a clause in there about name calling children. We don't allow it. We also don't allow people rolling in telling OP that they feel sorry for their stepkids because OP is feeling overwhelmed and overloaded.
  • If anyone is advocating slapping, spanking, or any other form of violence, report the comment immediately. We do not advocate violence towards children of any sort. The mod team does not advocate any sort of physical punishment at any time.
  • Venting about behaviors is not the same as insulting the kids. However, if you see a post or comment where kids are being name called or dragged to the point of no return, use the report button. We try to catch the posts and remove them before they hit the sub, but we cannot see every comment without your help. Use the report button to bring problematic comments to our attention. Don't engage in a war of words on our subreddit.

Why is this sub such an echo chamber?

  • Not allowing contributors to pile on and tell OP that they are a terrible human being who should never be around children does not equate to being an echo chamber. Many contributors here will offer OP suggestions to help them work through their resentments and frustrations, and the most egregious situations are called out. We simply ask that it be called out with respect.
  • If you feel that a post is simply too much for you to handle without following the rules, move on to another post.
  • If you believe that a post itself is crossing the rules report it. If the mod team has approved the post, it is because the mod team believes that the OP needs help from the community or needs a moment to vent and move on from their vent. That does not give you license to pile on disrespectfully. Unless it is proven that OP is a bot, assume that OP is a human being with real thoughts and feelings and has posted from a place of vulnerability.

Why can't I tell OP that they are an asshole?

  • Because this isn't a judgement sub. We aren't AITA, we don't want to be AITA.
  • Comments with terms like YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH will be removed.
  • Don't start your posts with INFO either. We generally recognize that as a fishing attempt for more information to pass judgement on OP, and again, we are not a judgment sub.

But OP asked if they were an asshole?!

  • Their post somehow got past our automoderator. Just use the report button. We will address it with OP.
  • If you've asked if you are an asshole, a-hole, a*hole, a**hole, whatever, don't be surprised if your post is removed without warning. This isn't a judgment sub. If you want judgment, you know where to go.

What is a gendered slur?

  • While it seems that everyone understands what racist slurs are, people struggle understanding the concept of gendered slurs. Generally speaking, we are talking about derogatory nouns or verbs that are used to negatively describe people or situations based on gendered terms.
  • We've gone back and forth on this a few times, and the truth is, we get it, it's your safe space and you want to be able to vent about BM/BD how you want to vent about them, without us telling you how to vent about them. Fair enough. Vent away. What we are going to stick to here how people are referring to other users and to stepchildren.
  • Examples that are not allowed:
    • "My SD is such a little bitch."
    • "She dresses/acts like a slut."
    • "My SS acts like a pussy."
    • "My SS is such a beta male."
    • "You are all fucking whores."
    • "Any dude who is raising some sluts kids is a cuck!"
    • "Little Lord Fauntleroy over here thinking he runs the house!"
    • "You're just the bangnanny, get used to it."
  • Don't call users here names, don't call stepchildren names.
  • Masking the term with asterisks or other neat little tricks might get you around the bot, but if we see it, we're removing it and quite possibly giving you a time out. The intended word is still there and you deliberately tried to skate the rule.
  • As there is not enough space to list every term that is offensive and does not belong, nor every situation in which term or phrase may be allowable in context, this rule is enforced based on moderator discretion.

Seriously? You are the language police now?

  • We're here to talk about stepparenting. And we would like for that to happen in a respectful way. Attacking each other doesn't help. Belittling stepchildren draws in trolls who don't understand your frustration, all they see is an evil stepmonster talking shit on the internet about a poor, innocent baby. Yes, even if that "poor, innocent baby" just robbed you blind and set fire to the house on their way out the door. That's just how it goes.
  • We are aware that this is a relatively new rule and a lot of older posts and comments contain a lot of problematic language, including some from mods themselves. We are growing and evolving, and rules change as the sub grows and evolves.

What does No Drama really mean?

  • Pretty much what it says, do not bring drama from other subs into this sub. Do not engage in vote brigades. Do not try to incite other subscribers to riot in a different sub. Don't follow posters into this sub from other subs to continue to harass them. Do not badger someone or derail threads. Do not harass community members because you don't agree with them. There's enough drama in the daily lives of subscribers, more isn't needed.

What is thread derailment?

  • When a comment chain has devolved to the point where all you are doing is arguing back and forth with someone about the same thing over and over again, you have derailed the thread. Also known as bickering. It's what children do. We assume if people are in a stepparent role they are adults. We expect you to act like it.
  • If you aren't a stepparent, or in a stepparenting role, consider that perhaps this subreddit isn't for you. If you want to participate, do so with respect. Thread derailment, arguing, bickering, and nitpicking are not allowed.

But what if they didn't answer my question?

  • No one has to answer your questions. This is a support sub, not an inquisition. Jumping on a bandwagon with "OP is evading the question" in a 20 comment long chain is the epitome of thread derailment. You'll find more information about trolling below and how this might be considered such.

Why am I being silenced? I'm just asking for a back and forth!

  • Thread derailment, badgering, and nitpicking are considered harassment. Continued harassment of either community members or mods will get you banned.

Why can't I look at someone's post history and comment about it?

  • No mod in the history of this sub has ever once said post histories are forbidden. What we do frown upon is using someone's post history to attack, belittle, or otherwise harass someone.
  • Example Post: "My stepkid's mom really hates me. How can I make this better?"
    • Okay: "Based on the timeline and your post history, it looks like this may have started as an affair. Unfortunately there's going to be outstanding issues for a long time due to that. Try focusing on yourself and how you can move forward without worrying about how someone else feels about you."
    • Not Okay: "Holy shit! You were the OW! What the hell do you expect, homewrecker?!"
  • Example Post: "I am completely overloaded and feeling very down about myself."
    • Okay: "In your post history you mentioned that your spouse wasn't really helping around the house. Has that changed at all?"
    • Not Okay: "LOL, you already got the answers you need in your post on relationships. You are stupid for sticking with your lazy spouse."

Why can't we crosspost stuff to other subs?

  • We can't stop you from doing so. The problem isn't that something has been crossposted, it's when the community that it's been crossposted to feels the need to come over here and harass OP. When we see that happening, we lock the post and start passing out bans. If you did the crossposting, you'll be banned. If you participated in the brigading, you'll be banned.

What if it's my own post?

  • Again, we can't stop you from doing so. We prefer that you don't technically crosspost, but rather just copy and paste your post. Why? Because inevitably the above will happen. Redditors from other subs will follow you back to /r/stepparents and start attacking users here. It just happens.

What is "brigading"?

  • Reddit defines vote manipulation and brigading as follows:
  • Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
  • Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
  • Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.
  • We, along with pretty much every other subreddit that has ever had to deal with this nonsense, further define brigading as this: You saw a post on another sub that linked to our sub either via a link in a comment or a crosspost. It was basically saying something along the lines of "OMG, check out these assholes over on /r/stepparents! They literally hate all their stepkids!" And then you and your friends come over and start hammering on OP and telling OP how much they suck. Congrats, you have just participated in a brigade.

What is this whole Report, Don't Rant thing about?

  • If you see a post or comment that breaks the rules, instead of engaging, report it. When you report it, it sends notification to the mod team. We will act on it where appropriate. Engaging with bad faith users may result in your comments being removed. If you repeatedly do so, you may end up being banned.

What if I see an obvious troll?

What if they are being really mean in comments?

What if they are harassing me in private messages?

  • Step 1: Report them to admins. You can report harassment to reddit by using this link or send a DM to reddit admins. Include the link to the DM, admins can see your inbox and providing a direct link is helpful for them to weed out bad actors.
  • Step 2: Block the person so they cannot directly contact you again.
  • Step 3: Send us a mod mail and let the mod team know. Tell us who they are and what they said, send us a screenshot if you can - admins can see your DMs, mods can't. We'll take action where necessary by banning from the sub if they aren't already banned.

What do you mean by No Naming & Shaming?

  • Just as we prefer to not be linked to or crossposted from, we do not allow linking to or calling out other subs by name. If you see something you want to share, say it's a hot post that has hit the front page and a stepparent is being absolutely flayed, just refer to it as "that hot post that hit the front page." If you want to complain about other places in general, "other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice. Absolutely under no circumstances should you link to anywhere else.

I can't link to other subs?

  • Do not directly link to another sub. (e.g.: "/r/insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not name other subs. (e.g.: "I won't link to it directly, but insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not abbreviate other subs. (e.g.: "I know that ISNH is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")

I can't ping other users?

  • Do not summon another user with a username ping/tag. (e.g.: "/u/insertusernamehere was being an asshole.")
  • If you are agreeing with someone, it is okay to link to them. (e.g.: "I agree with /u/insertusernamehere, you need to take a couple of steps back and reflect on this.")

What does No Platitudes mean?

  • Sanctimonious, overused clichés that grossly oversimplify the stepparenting experience are neither wanted nor allowed here. We have all heard it a thousand times before, we don't need to hear it again. It's not nearly as insightful and wise as some would like to think.

Why don't you people understand it's a package deal?

  • Any comment that suggests that OP should have known what they were getting involved with, or that they needed to understand that the kids were part of some package they needed to accept before signing up for marriage is subject to immediate removal.
  • This is one of the most insensitive things you can say to a stepparent. Most stepparents were aware of the children, but they were probably not aware of all of the family dynamics.

Why can't you just love them like they are your own?

  • Demanding that a stranger you do not know love children that are not biologically theirs as if they were theirs can be incredibly damaging to someone who is already in a vulnerable situation. Any comment that falls along these lines will be removed.

What do you mean by No Trolling? I was just...

  • No means no. No trolling. No pretending to be a stepparent and then whipping out the Greatest Hits Bingo Card of The Worst Stepparent in the History of Stepparents. We see you. We've seen you a thousand times.

What does "concern trolling", "gish-galloping", and "sealioning" have to do with stepparenting? This isn't a debate sub, why are you using debate terms?

  • That's absolutely right, this isn't a debate sub. And yet, here we are, day after day, having to defend ourselves against this sort of thing. So, enough. No more. Usage of any of these things will get you banned.

What is "Concern Trolling?"

  • A concern troll is someone who disingenuously visits sites of an opposing ideology to disrupt conversation by offering unwanted advice on how to solve problems which do not really exist.
    • Example Post: OP expresses concern that she will feel, and possibly act, differently towards her stepchildren after her husband decides that no, he doesn't want anymore children after all.
    • Example Concern Troll pulled from actual mod mail after their comment was removed: "Possible child abuse claims need to be sorted out well before whatever empathy you believe the OP was looking for."

What is a "Devil's Advocate"?

  • "I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but have you considered that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break, too?" BM has dozens of different mom based subs alone on reddit she can complain on, this sub is for stepparents. The stepparent doesn't need to consider that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break.

"Gish-galloping?" What does that even mean?

  • The Gish Gallop is the fallacious debate tactic of drowning your opponent in a flood of individually-weak arguments in order to prevent rebuttal of the whole argument collection without great effort. The Gish Gallop is a conveyor belt-fed version of the on the spot fallacy, as it's unreasonable for anyone to have a well-composed answer immediately available to every argument present in the Gallop.

And "sealioning?" What's that?

  • Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking.

Who gets to define what is considered asshattery?

  • The mod team, of course! If we feel that comments are out of line, are trolling, are leading up to a fight or "just asking questions", we are going to remove them and most likely ban the offender.

FAQ - Sub Questions

Posting Guidelines for Stepparents

  • Body text is required, we suggest you use line breaks between paragraphs as a wall of text is difficult to read. Posts that have only a title are likely to be removed. Instead of using names (even fictitious ones), try to use the sub acronyms. It helps our users to follow along if you use the acronyms and not names.
  • Assign a post flair that accurately describes what your post is about and what you are seeking. If you are posting an update from a previous post, include a link to that post.
  • Flairs are applied to posts to determine what a person is looking for. When submitting a new post, you should choose a flair that specifies if you are looking for advice, support, etc. The following link flair is available and is color coded with side bar links so that you can search by flair:
    • Advice - For when you are specifically asking for advice or help.
    • Announcement - Mod Use Only, for subreddit announcements.
    • Daily (Formerly TTP) - Mod Use Only, for our daily discussion threads.
    • Discussion - A little advice, a little "How does your family handle this?"
    • JustBMThings - Pretty sure this is self explanatory!
    • Legal - Asking for legal advice? Tag it with this!
    • Miscellany - Just a sort of off topic thing? Use this tag.
    • Resource - Sharing a good resource or asking for one? This is the tag you need!
    • Support - For those days when you want nothing but a good old fashioned cry and some community love.
    • Update - Updating us on something that you posted about previously? Use this one!
    • Vent - We all need to vent sometimes. Respect the tag as a vent. This isn't how OP talks all day every day.
    • Win! - Celebrate those wins with us with this tag!
    • Megathread - Mod Use Only, for large mega threads (typically around major calendar events.)

Posting Guidelines for Bioparents

  • Stepparents is a support community for stepparents, by stepparents. As bioparents, you may want to have more insight into how the stepparent in your life feels or thinks. You may have questions on how to ease the transition for your partner. However, please keep in mind that this community was not created for you. It was created for your partner or your ex's partner. If you are seeking support on how to deal with a stepparent, there are other subs more suited for your situation and your post is subject to removal.
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will accept:
    • Seeking advice on how to support your partner as they navigate stepparenting
    • Seeking resources to help you better support your partner
    • Seeking resources for your partner
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will not accept:
    • Complaints about how the stepparent is too involved in your kids lives
    • Vents about how the stepparent is not involved enough in your kids lives
    • "Cautionary tales" advising stepparents to back off
    • Seeking advice on how to tell the stepparent to back off
    • The Do's and Dont's of Stepparenting
    • How your kid's stepmom is literally The Worst
  • Comments from bioparents that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from bioparents that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. There are several other subs that may meet the needs of bioparents better than we can. We recommend /r/coparenting, /r/parenting, /r/parents, /r/blendedfamilies, and /r/singleparents as starting points.

Guidelines for Stepkids

  • At this time, we do not generally accept posts from stepkids. Comments from stepkids that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from stepkids that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. If you are a stepkid seeking support, we highly recommend /r/stepkids. It is a very supportive community specifically for stepkids. We also recommend /r/blendedfamilies as another potential group for support.

What the heck are all these acronyms? I'm confused!

Why aren't my posts or comments showing up?

  • New posters and accounts go through a waiting period before their posts will show in the sub and the comments on posts automatically. During the new account approval period the mod team will check posts to be sure you aren't attempting to circumvent a ban with a shiny new account. Please be patient while the timer runs down on your "new" status and the mod team approves your posts and responses.

Why was my comment removed?

  • Comments are removed when they do not follow the rules of the sub. These rules are published in several places for your reading pleasure.
  • Comments are removed at moderator discretion. In some cases your comment may be removed while another remains up. If you find this to be the case, and you believe the comment to be violating the rules, instead of arguing with mods or demanding they remove the additional comments, just report it.

This comment/post is really offensive! Why is it still up?

  • All moderators are volunteers and have busy real lives. Sometimes things get past us. The best thing you can do is report anything you find offensive or inflammatory. It's the quickest and most reliable way of alerting us to an issue.

I've received a hurtful/unwanted PM from someone about my recent post. What should I do?

  • If you receive an unwanted/hurtful PM from a name you don't recognize, please report it to Reddit Admins using our handy pre-populated form. Be sure to include the permalink to the message. We've been dealing with a few unhappy folks who like to attack stepparents, and reporting it to the admins is the only way to make it stop.

What are the general moderator guidelines?

I've been wrongly banned/Why can't I comment here?

Why was I banned without warning?

  • There are numerous reasons that the mod team might opt to move perm banning without warning. Message the moderators if you have specific questions.

Announcement Weekly Reminder: Saferbot and Automated Bans

Hey Stepparents,

If you've been here for awhile, you are aware of the existence of Saferbot on our sub. If you aren't aware, we break it down in the wiki. Take a moment to review it!

What the Bot Does

Saferbot is a history ban bot. It bans users who participate in known troublesome subs that have a history of harassing users here and brigading our posts.

How it Works

Saferbot monitors the other subs and immediately bans anyone who comments there. Please note, human beings are not doing the banning. We have neither the time, nor inclination, to monitor other subs. Saferbot runs on its own with only instructions from us on what subs to add to its list.

Why We Use It

We intend for this sub to be a safe space for stepparents to discuss their issues and struggles without being told they are literally The Worst for existing. Sometimes we experience jealousy, resentment, and other not pretty feelings. We have a right to express them in a healthy way without a bunch of assholes scolding us for being human. And unfortunately, the subs we've had to add to the ban list have a history of users strolling in here giving people grief for being a flawed human being with feelings they are trying to sort through.

The mod team does not take these decisions lightly and we often let things ride for a bit before taking drastic actions. But seeing users repeatedly delete their accounts after being harassed, or having to clean up increasingly rude and hostile comment chains from people who literally have no idea what your life is actually like, has prompted us to take action.

Notes

Meta posts asking about this will be removed. Comments about this, other than those on this thread discussing the issue, will be removed. Vile mod mail will be reported to Reddit.

Please do not link to the subs mentioned in the wiki. They are linked for transparency and we don't care to have ongoing discussions about them.

How to Appeal

If you are a stepparent and you've been caught up in the ban, and you want the support that this community offers, reach out to the mod team. If you can show us where on reddit you are discussing being a stepparent, we'll do our best to work with you. To be perfectly clear, if you aren't a stepparent, or we review and see we've had to remove comments from you in the past, we are probably not going to lift the ban.

Reply to the ban message and let us know that you'd like to appeal. Include link(s) to any unedited posts or comments that you made prior to the ban indicating that you are a stepparent. The posts or comments do not have to be on this sub specifically, but show us where you have indicated that you are a stepparent somewhere on reddit prior to being banned. This will save us time and eliminate the need for a mod to attempt to scour your post history.

Support At what point should you get some concern about stepchildren who have “crushes” on each other?

My SD (6) lives with her stepbrother (10) when at her mother’s house. She told me in confidence this morning that they have “crushes” on each other and have been “kissing on the lips” but begged me not to tell her parents.

I am going to tell my husband after they’re in bed, but not sure if I should encourage him to raise it with their mom. It’s a very high conflict relationship and I am sure she will be angry at us and say we’re “accusing” her stepson of something.

I haven’t come across this before and I’m not sure if this is a typical and totally innocent thing or if this is a cause for concern. I know grooming and inappropriate touching does happen between step siblings but have no way of knowing whether that’s happening here or likely to happen. I’ve only met the kid once at her birthday party and he just seemed like a totally normal kid, so I don’t want to upset the apple cart over nothing.

Vent Step Daughter issues

• Upvotes

Hello all, just venting here. I’ve been with my girlfriend for 2 years now. We are both divorced, and her ex is not in the picture at all. She has 3 beautiful children and I never had kids, so this is all new to me.

Recently, her daughter who is 15 was found to have been messing around with a couple of boys her age. It came to our attention from others, we had no idea. We confronted her about it, and she acts like it’s no big deal. We have taken the last 4 days of private talks with her, and her mother has had quite a bit to say to her that hasn’t been so nice.

The daughter has a history of being mouthy, manipulative, and deceiving. She has taken no accountability for her actions, or really shown any kind of remorse for what she’s done. We punished her by giving her a string of chores, no access to her phone whatsoever, and made her just stay in her room. Well we hid the phone for 4 days and she had the nerve to search for it and find it. This made my girlfriend absolutely lose it.

We’ve had issues in the past with her talking to boys but this really topped it off…..and you guessed it, it’s causing a lot of tension between me and my girlfriend. I’ve tried every single approach but her and her daughter have never gotten along. They both think way too much alike. I’m left feeling like I’m in the middle of a fucking shit show and have no solutions.

I’ve gotten to the point of thinking of walking away because it’s non stop arguing, bickering, and shouting. I don’t know what to do here…but this all feels like way too much.

Advice Step Ex

Does anyone feel like they’ve taken on not only Step Children, but the Ex Partner as well? The WHOLE package. I have recently just woken up to the whole dynamic. I didn’t realise how much some Ex partners are still so dominant in each others lives. Is this a deal breaker? It is really quite a dark dismal reality dealing with this when you step back and look at it. Even if you love someone dearly.

“ Thank you everyone. I got great insight, validation and clarity. I’ll be requesting boundaries or I’m just going to leave the blended family world. It’s just not for me. 🙏

Advice Step Parent

Need some advice, my partner's oldest is simply brutal. She’s so disrespectful, and it’s not just me it’s to every adult in her life but she is ESPECIALLY mouthy and disrespectful with me. I don’t know how to adjust to this. I talk with my partner about it and she says “ she’s disrespectful to everyone in her life I’m trying ” or she will talk to her and discipline her but she has behavior issues so it does absolutely nothing. I love my partner, with everything I have. But this is so hard. Her oldest does not like me, no matter what I do and I continue to show up but it’s so discouraging. Every day I go home and wonder what I am gonna be faced with. What do I do? Keep taking the disrespect? I don’t want to NOT be with my partner that doesn’t even feel like an option. Just wondering what other people have done who may have been in similar situations. I can say one thing, being a step parent is not for the weak. Any Advice is welcome!

Miscellany Using humor to make a high-conflict ex less stressful

A divorced dad shared a routine he and his new wife use for dealing with their high-conflict exes, what he called "Texts from the Ex": on a weekend evening when their kids aren't around, they pull out a bottle of wine and read the most ridiculous messages from their exes that week in their best formal British accent.

My ex isn't that high-conflict and yet she still regularly sends me absurd and laughable texts, which I share with my partner. My partner commented early on that she was worried we'd run out of things to talk about when we stopped complaining about our exes, and while fortunately that hasn't been a problem 5 years later, our exes do continue to provide plenty of material.

Do you and your partner have a way to lighten the tone of interactions with your exes?

Advice My brother is dating a single mom

• Upvotes

Hi. My brother (24yo, recently) is currently dating a single mom (31yo). They have been dating online for about six months, but talking for a year. They met on Discord through a friend and played games together.

We don't live in the capital, but she does, so he wants to travel to see her and stay there for about a month. We have an apartment there where he is planning to stay. However, I'm concerned not only because of the age gap, but also because she has two kids (with the same dad) who are about 6 and 4 years old, and she doesn't have any support from the father. Also, she doesn't have a job and lives in a rental with her parent (a single mom) and cousins. My brother lives with me, my other brother, and our parents in a house we own.

I've seen how he pays for things for her, like video games, the cybercafe, and that sort of thing, but I think he pays for other things too (I saw him transferring money to her mom). One of his friends warned him about her asking for money, but she told him that his friend was just resentful because she had rejected him and she didn't know that friend saw her that way.

My brother has no experience with girls and has always spent his time online. Now that he's all set to travel, I'm worried about him; I'm afraid she might have sex with him and claim she's pregnant or something like that. He is studying for a master's degree that our parents are paying for, and while he doesn't have a job, he has spending money from our parents.

I don't know how to tell him that she doesn't seem like a good match. What should I do?

Advice Am I moving too quickly or overstepping?

I (M/33) have been in a relationship with my GF (F/41) for about two years now. She has two children (a 21 year old and a 9 year old) and both are awesome. She also has a good co-parenting arrangement with her ex-husband (father of the 9 year old), a solid career, she and her boys are all in all, great to be around. However, I'm still new to being in a relationship with kids (this is my first time doing this) and I'm worried I might be moving too fast on some things.

For background: I'm active duty and just recently came back from an unexpectedly extended deployment. I'm due to move in a couple months, so my GF generously offered to let me stay with her to simplify my moving logistics. I'm going to be moving cross country on my next orders and I'll be away for several years, so we''ll be doing long distance. Her 21 year old stays with her (he's going to college nearby) and her 9 year old alternates weekends and different weekdays with her (her ex lives just a few minutes away). I took her up on her offer to move in (move in being staying in her bedroom with her and storing some stuff in the garage), there hasn't been any issues, but I am starting to worry I may have moved too quickly on this.

I only met her 9 year old once before I moved in, and that was almost a year ago before I deployed. Hes a quiet kid, keeps to himself and I try to keep a respectful distance since I'm a new person in his life, and he already has a great dad. However, I am definitely a stranger in his life, and I'm worried that me being his moms boyfriend living there temporarily and then leaving, might not be the best or is creating a wrong impression. I also haven't met the coparent yet (the ex husband) to make sure he was okay with me being there and I don't know if that is a faux pas and something I should have pushed more for. For what it's worth, my GF says she has discussed it with him and that he is okay with his (he also has his own live in GF according to my GF).

Adding to my stress a bit is my mother. She's been very vocal to me that she thinks my temporarily moving in is a terrible idea. According to her, I'm being disruptive to the 9 year olds life since I'm only temporarily there and I'm being entirely too trusting of my GF saying all the arrangements are okay with her ex. My mom is also of the opinion that since I dont know either the 9 y/o or the ex well I'm opening myself to too much risk with the family, my mom is paranoid about me being the subject false accusations of child abuse or things of that nature. To be clear, there has been zero, absolutely no hint or inkling of something like that happening, thats just her fear.

For background context, I come from a very small insular family without a history of coparenting or stepparenting. My mother also works for a school district and is unfortunately exposed to a large amount of negative examples step-parenting and co-parenting arrangements. My GFs family is a very large extended family with multiple examples of step and co-parenting.

My biggest fear and whats been making me feel uncomfortable is being this new person in the 9 year olds life. The last thing I want to do is be disruptive to him or inadvertently cause harm by me being there and then departing so shortly after, especially since my living there is temporary. My mom's worry about fake accusations (again, nothing to indicate that would happen) has also been a little niggling fear in the back of my head. My GF, to be clear also, didn't invite me in to try and suddenly thrust being a parent on me, she is just trying to be nice and give me a spot to crash while I plan out my move. I've spoken to her about my discomfort and shes tried to assure me the arrangement is okay and that if I do want to crash somewhere else she is okay with that.

Obviously this is just a small snapshot, but since I'm a novice with this kind of relationship I wanted to see if you guys and gals had any experience with something like this. Am I overreacting and overthinking things or would some of you recommend I pump the brakes a bit more?

Advice My husband gets angry with me when his daughter misbehaves

It's pretty much as the title says,

It's so draining, she's 10, she's got some sort of psychological issue, her older brother is severely autistic so I think she's got something similar. He refuses to think there's a problem with her because unlike her brother she can talk.

She's quite delayed, even in size she's around a 6 year old. She's never been dry at night and still occasionally daytime wets (this is not very often but her underwear always smells of wee as of shes wee'd in small amounts all day long. She's not being se**ally abused, she's been to the doctors and he's done bloods, physical, there's nothing. She doesn't wipe after going number two and her underwear are almost always full of poo.

She hides dirty nappies and pants around the house for no good reason, she has access to the bins.

She steals, lies, tantrums, attacks her younger siblings and sometimes her older brother too.

She shouts at teachers in school and is violent there too, she's been relocated three times due to it. We're in Europe and the school can't force a diagnosis. She's seen a psychologist but the problem is, she sees her for an hour every now and then, and her father lies and pretends these behaviours don't exist at home. He always says "she's a bit naughty".

She loves being naughty too, she loves when her father makes out like it's some cute thing "you are so naughty" with a big smile, it's just stupid.

She always wants to hear about things that are negative or unpleasant.

She has these major tantrums, especially with me, where she's screaming like she's being murdered and I just have to walk away.

But when she starts, almost every single time, her father tells her off, then tells me off. I "rile her up" or I "talk to her too much" and it's always my fault. He tells me I don't know how to deal with children and I should just shut up and go away.

I'm getting so sick of being spoken to like this. If I comment on anything, like if I see he's being unjust to another child in order to appease her anger, I speak, and that always causes problems.

What am I supposed to do?

Discussion Eu deveria terminar?

Vent My husband says he went from the “fun parent” house to the house of rules because of me

We got married about a year ago. He has a 5 year old, I have a 10 year old. My son is extremely respectful, polite, a rule follower and just generally all around a great kid. His 5 year old is the complete opposite of my son. When his kid is over our kids play together and have fun but his kid just does whatever, doesn’t listen to me, disrespects my son and has free reign over everything while my husband sits and plays games. Then when I put boundaries in place his kid runs straight to him crying saying I’m being mean. I’m just parenting the same way I did with my kid and the boundaries are don’t hit or pinch or punch your step brother. Seems pretty straightforward in my opinion. When I try to talk to my husband he says he used to be the fun house and now his kid won’t want to come over because we’re the house of rules. So stupid honestly I don’t know what to do.

Advice Ahh i need to vent. This 16 yr old step son is destroying me 😬 and my marriage

Background: my hubby and I have been together 6 years. I have 2 kids from previous marriage 13 and 9. Good A grade kids. Kind caring follow our expectations and we all live together so well.

2 years ago my husbands son (from his previous marriage) moved in with us at 14. His narcissistic mum was done with his bad behaviour, never at school, swearing, hanging out with the wrong crowd... he ran to ours. Of course we said its fine. But he was so messed up about his mum and her new boyfriend he hated the world. We gave him everything. A private school, enrolled him into sport, love, compassion and help.

Hes now gone back down the wrong path at 16. Hanging with the wrong crowd, wagging school, doing dumb shit to impress the druggy kids, we yell, sit him down and talk, ground him, say no to parties... but he gets worse! "No one loves me anyway!" We remind him we do! We've helped him, given him a caring home.. and he juat does dumb think and shrugs and said "owell I don't know why I did that.." and off h a goes

Im all for grounding. No parties this week! No friends over you're in trouble. No my hubby says "juat leave him. We are putting to much pressure on him" even worse "you're treating him like his horrible mum did! Im his dad ill deal with it you stay out." His way is sit him down, have a quiet chat, you are loved.. off you go "he needs to learn from him mistakes.. not us yelling and mean consequences"

Umm so we just let him keep treating us like crap!? No way would I accept it from my 2 kids. I cant parent like he does! 😞 what do i do. Every time I say something I'm nagging. Or I'm not letting him parent HIS child, stay out of it.. i hate been told to stay out of it in my own home..

I can only imagine the dramas to come at 18 or when he gets his licence 😞

Thoughts?

Advice Bf(33M) told me “Motherf****er shut up” in front of his 7yo son

He has said it once to me (32F) before when we were at a bar and giving our order to a waiter. He was a little tipsy and we talked about it, but he didn’t realize it at first.

Today he did it in front of of his kid who heard it. I did stop talking in the moment to just give him a look with my eyes and just walked away. I got home first and went inside to calm myself down. Addressed it to him in private upstairs, but says he didn’t say it so no apology.

He also uses the b-word from time to time. His children can hear it and sometimes uses it when talking to me. I’ve asked him to stop but he just says “he’s working on it”. I told him not to speak crazy to me at all but especially in front of his kids, but he then says “these are my kids I’ll say whatever I want to them they know when to turn ears off” (???)

This hasn’t been sitting right with me. We are 2 years into our relationship and both want more children. Will this behavior change or get better? Or will he speak to me like that when kids are older and we have some of our own?? Any experience with this? This really is my only issue, but it is huge for me. We’ve talked so much about it, I just don’t want to get further in if that will be my future.

UPDATE: I did indeed pack my things and got out of there while I could. Will try my luck with someone without children next time. Hopefully this is the last time I’m in this sub!

Advice Question on how you guys discipline your step child

I’m not talking about beating. My wife and I agreed that’s a line we won’t cross. But whenever I tell him no tablet or I take something from him for acting out my wife says I’m being too strict even though she’s done the same thing for the same behavior. Or when I don’t take something from him or give him something without knowing he’s in trouble or not supposed to have something then I’m too lenient. I don’t understand because telling her that I’d help when it’s asked and to let me know when something like that is happening so I can act accordingly I was also wrong I’m just confused. Is there a medium?

Advice Vent

I am 30 year old male childless stepparent, my gf is 31 with 3 kids all boys, 14, 12, and 10. The first two kids dad is not in the picture (no child support or contact) the youngest boys dad essentially is their ‘dad’ since he’s been around them since they were very young. He gives no child support and sometimes picks them up on the weekend. Over all the living situation isn’t bad, I’ve lived with them now for 6 months and been dating their mom for 2.5 years. The kids love me, I’m not really a step dad but kind of in that realm, they are good kids do their chores and majority of money comes from the mom. Their ‘dad’ is useless can’t hold a job doesn’t have a car etc etc. long story short, I love their mom dearly. She is definitely my best friend, does it ever get easier? I feel like I don’t ever get my own space from the kids, not that they bother me but just constant noise from tvs, iPads, etc. I help where I can financially, we both tag team dinners, we work quite well together. Just sometimes I am back and forth on if this is what I want. She wants to get engaged soon. Any advice or thoughts please.

Vent BD stirs it up and parental alienate mum (my partner), who falls into the trap

14 year old step son keeps mid behaving and starting arguments with BM, my partner, who then has anger management issues

Last time she hit him (self defense in a way), and said she never wanted to see him again

He ran away to his biological dad’s house, albeit they eventually reconciled after a week of drama that I had to pick up

This has now happened again. The 14 year old adhered to all the rules such as de escalating and apologizing and giving space. Unfortunately my partner, his mother, kept pursuing in anger including blocking his phone

Step son has now ran off to fathers again who of course takes great pleasure in all of this as a way to get to mum

I can’t keep getting her out of these problems or covering for her upset, these are situations she causes herself

I doubt sons coming back this time, nor can she make him. She says she’s not bothered, as he’s disrespectful, but of course she is bothered and will be into a depression for months

It’s all so obvious what is happening, and I warned her. Her anger takes over though.

I can’t keep getting her out of these problems or covering for her upset, these are situations she causes herself

I doubt sons coming back this time, nor can she make him

Vent SS13 is waking me (and my baby) up every night.

The way my house is set up, the master bedroom is on the lower level and my stepson’s room is upstairs, directly above our room. We have hardwood floors.

He doesn’t really have a bedtime (I know) and is constantly getting out of his bed (very loudly)- it’s a bunk bed and he’s wants a regular bed, but we tell him all he needs to do is clean his very very very messy room and we will get him a regular bed, redecorate, etc. (he’s never done any chores like that here but that’s for another post.) He’s a big 13yo so the sound of him climbing down from the bed, climbing over the stuff all over his floor, and walking around INSTANTLY wakes me up every time.

Since as I had our baby I obviously wake up easier as us parents don’t really sleep deeply during the baby years. I’ve asked my husband to please let SS know that walking around the house all hours of the night (unless he is using the bathroom) is disruptive and should be kept to a minimum. As I’m writing this he has woken up my baby again- I was already awake from him waking me up a few minutes ago.

He does not have soft footfalls, I bought him slippers hoping it would soften the noise a bit but I’m just at a loss. Am I being ridiculous? No matter how many times I bring it up to my husband nothing changes. I’ve given up on caring about his lack of a bedtime or playing videogames/being on his phone all night. I’m at the point of NACHO parenting and have been for awhile, although when something is directly effecting my sleep and more importantly the well-being of my baby I can’t ignore it. Is it impossible for 13yo to tiptoe and think “I should be extra quiet since everyone else is sleeping directly below me”?

Edited to address some questions/comments-

My stepson is allowed to walk around the house and do whatever he wants, it’s how loud he is that’s the issue. Going to and from the kitchen over and over and things like that is what I meant by walking around all night. I hear the toilet flush up there like 10 times a night but I’m not gonna tell him he can’t use the bathroom because that’s insane.

Yes, I wake my husband up about half the time and he kinda just shrugs, rolls over, and goes back to sleep. This summer he was allowed to stay up all night (my husband leaves for work at 4:30 and SS would boast that he stayed up so late he heard dad leave for work.) One night I kept getting woken up to SS yelling and laughing while on FaceTime and playing video games with his friend- it was so loud I thought someone was outside our house. I woke my husband up and made him go say something. The very next night it happened again.

I have gone up there myself literally in tears BEGGING him to be quiet because he keeps waking the baby up, which wakes me up, and it’s not okay to be that loud. We need sleep. I’m someone that if I’m woken up suddenly I’m NOT very fun to be around.

I truly think he just doesn’t understand or empathize and thinks he’s not being loud. My husband is a great dad, but he displays a lot of guilty parenting due to how horrible (truly insane and borderline abusive) bio mom is and how she’s affected SS. He has kind of a “his mom is terrible so I need to be an extra sensitive and easygoing dad towards him” attitude. I’m not worried about this kind of thing happening with our son because it’s a different situation and with the age gap I don’t think there will be room for the younger sibling comparing his rules to his big brothers.

We can’t move his room, the two other bedrooms are either the baby’s room or our office. The baby sleeps in our room with us though, but their rooms are across a narrow hallway from eachother so it wouldn’t make any difference sound-wise.

As far as cleaning goes, I don’t think you guys realize how messy it actually is. It’s not even something that he could clean in one day. It’s not dirty, just full of too much crap and unopened Lego sets, Christmas presents he never cared to use, clothes that he doesn’t wear, etc. He literally doesn’t know how to clean. I’ve been in his life for 12 years and he’s just never had any chores, it’s not up to me. I always tell him “let’s clean your room this weekend!” and he says yes but then doesn’t wanna do it. It’s up to my husband to help with that at this point.

Advice 27F considering moving to another country for my boyfriend (46M) who has three kids. Looking for advice.

I’m 27F, and my boyfriend is 46M. We’ve been in a long-distance relationship for three years, living in different countries. He has three children (15, 18, and 21). The two younger ones live with him 50% of the time, while the oldest lives with their mother.
I’ve spent quite a bit of time with him in the US, met his family and kids, and i love him deeply. We’ve discussed marriage and having kids together.
However, I’m hesitant about moving to another country, leaving my family, friends, and entire support system behind, and trying to fit into an already established household and family dynamic.
I’m also closer in age to his children than I am to him, and I wonder how that might affect the family dynamic and my place in the household.
I’d really appreciate any advice.

Vent I want my partner to have more custody of his son, but I dread having him here. Can anyone relate?

I had a baby with my partner in early September, and since my third trimester, I’ve found myself dreading visits with my seven-year-old stepson. He has level 1 autism, is demanding of attention, and has some behaviours I find difficult to deal with. On top of that, my partner is now facing a court battle to increase his parenting time to 30%, which will put considerable financial and emotional strain on our household.

I’m starting to wonder whether it’s really my stepson I resent, or the circumstances surrounding his visits: a newborn, exhaustion, a higher-needs child, and the stress of ongoing conflict with his mother. I want my partner to have more time with his son, but I honestly don’t want that additional time for myself.

Our couples therapist and friends tend to reassure me that I love my stepson whenever I express frustration, as though that must be true. But I’m not sure it is, and I feel terrible admitting that. I try to act affectionate toward him regardless of how I feel, which adds another layer of emotional exhaustion.
I feel like a jerk, but I’m wondering how many other stepparents genuinely struggle with their feelings toward their stepchildren, rather than simply struggling with the circumstances. Have others felt this way, especially after having a baby of their own?

Win! Busted! He would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for these rotten meddling SP’s 🤣

This is just a funny story about the cons for kids who have step parents.

See, we are not programmed to believe that our stepkids are perfect little angels who never do anything wrong. We sense if there is some bamboozeling going on. We won’t be manipulated as easily as the bio’s.

So I have noticed that SS was coming by after school on days it was not our time like every day. As my SO is either away for work or is working from home at that time he can’t really spend time with SS. I am in between jobs for the moment ( I have the next one lined up don’t worry)
I am home and I was seeing a pattern.

He would take forever to come inside from the place where he puts his bike. My dog would alert me on this. Like 15-30 minutes… he would then walk in. Have a little chat and then take his bike again and “leave…”

However I started to notice my dog remaining edgy. Like looking at me questioning and whining. So I wondered if he took as long to take his bike again as it was to bring it in. But I couldn’t see him. ( I can see the garage from inside so he wasn’t there)

You have to know that we have a large home and there are a lot of places SS could be where I didn’t see him.
So I took out the trash and walk around to see what my dog was complaining about.

There I found SS with his bike, bend over on it looking at his phone… he was positioned near our front porch and where I couldn’t see him from inside.

I asked him what he was doing, he said he was too tired to bike home and resting. I told him to do that inside but he refused, saying he was going any minute now.

I told my SO and he found it quirky cute and funny. Like he always does. But I felt that there was more to this story. I suddenly realized what was happening.

Both BM and SO have implemented a no phone until after dinner rule. SS like many teenagers is completely addicted and if we let him do his thing he will be on three screens at the same time 😅.

BM tracks SS phone. So if he stops somewhere random for 30 minutes to an hour, she will call him to check. But if he shows up being at his dad, she won’t think twice about it.

But inside we also enforce the same rule so he can’t wait inside.

I told SO my theory and he immediately said I was paranoid. There was no way his kid could be so deceptive. As I said all these bioparents have the “my kid is a perfect little angel brainworm” .

So fair enough, I told SO to make SS “ rest his legs” inside and to not let him dilly dally 30 to 45 minutes on our porch. I was met with an eye roll but compliance.

SS his visits became increasingly more sparse. This is the first time he is not showing up casually in the weekend because he was just “ biking around in the neighborhood”.

Poor kid. He would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for his meddling stepmom 🤣.

Advice Haven't Met His Older Teen Kids After a Year, Now I Suddenly Can Since I Won Money

Quick background: I (39F) previously dated my now boyfriend (42M) 20 years ago when we were teenagers. We dated for 2 years and he was "the one" for me. We lived together and were very close, but he cheated on me and broke my heart. I moved on and got married and had 2 kids. Due to serious gun related domestic violence after 18 years of that relationship, we are divorcing. I reconnected with the ex, and now he's my boyfriend of 1 year again (so 3 years total, 1 year currently).

There are some things I strongly dislike about him, but I accept because I tell myself I will always dislike some aspect of everyone and we have history, he's VERY intelligent, makes good money, has his own house, etc. I just tell myself to stay level headed and don't fall deeply in love; just have fun and enjoy him and if it goes south, then no big deal. Some things I don't like:

He works IT for a porn company. I don't like that.

He has an extensive sexual past while I value long relationships. He has slept with old ladies (like as old as my mother) that send me harassing messages and make posts about me. It's fucking disgusting honestly. Like actual disgust and repulsion, and I ignore it.

When we first started dating, he would take calls from his BM no matter what was going on. He took her calls while we were naked in bed post sex and talked nonchalantly about non-kid related stuff. He took her calls while at my house and chatted for ever about non-kid related topics. He would leave my house to do chores and come to find out he would talk to her for 5 hours.

He told her things about me, like about my domestic violence, divorce, etc. I told him I didnt like it and he said that people can say my name, it's not that serious. That really pissed me off.

He was comparing me to her, telling me about what she does for work, etc. I didnt ask and don't care.

He was prioritizing her and would leave me hanging at his house to help her with stuff under the guise of coparenting and in the best interest of the kids even tho it had nothing to do with their kids. He left my house on a whim once to drive an hr to get his kids from her house to take them shopping for a wedding that she/they were going to the next day because she failed to prepare for it. Again, her problem and her lack of parenting and she says jump, and he jumps.

The kids are 16 and 17, and they can communicate directly with their dad. The whole coparenting BS was a farce and I considered it enmeshment. I told him he needed to set boundaries or I was out. He put up a huge fight about it and said she never did anything wrong to him to do this to her. Then he wrote a draft text to set a boundary and it was disgustingly apologetic and basically said they were so close and it wasn't fair to me so they needed to focus on coparenting only. I said it was weak and looked liked he was under duress, and he accused me of just wanting him to be a jerk to her and start drama. Then 2 weeks later he says he had a phone conversation with her and shes fine with it but he needs to see his kids more. (They dont have a court order). He refuses to tell me what the conversation actually entailed, and I know he hides his communication with her now rather than he simply doesnt talk to her anymore. He doesnt say a bad word about this person even though I know she's done alot of shit to him, and falsely accused him of DV (she admitted that and dropped the PFA). She used to mess with me years ago after the bf and I broke up the first time. She was a menace and I tried being nice to her, and she was just off the wall unhinged.

Anyway. We're at a point where we've been together a year now and I haven't met his kids, yet my kids love him and call him their stepdad. He is great with them and does more for them than their dad, who tries to hurt me through them. Early on, he wanted me to go to a concert with his son in March but then his ex said she didn't want me to meet them because I was going through a divorce. That really upset me but I said OK. Then I asked about meeting his kids and he never said much. This entire time I thought I wasn't meeting them because of her.

Last month, he said that he wanted them to meet the best version of me and basically said it's him that has kept them from meeting me. He said it was because I was going through things and I needed to get better before I could meet them. The "things" were the domestic violence and subsequent criminal case, the custody and divorce process, my mother passing away in May and me mourning her, and finally, my lawsuit against my old employer. I found this all incredibly hurtful and insulting. His kids are nearly adults, not small children. I'm sure they've met people who lost their mother or are divorcing. It hurt me deeply like he was accusing me of being flawed and that I would harm his kids and that I was too bad of a person to even meet 16, 17 year old kids for 5 minutes to say hello and introduce me. Don't forget that he doesn't have 50/50; he sees them a few hours a week. I apparently am too terrible of a person to even be introduced, meanwhile they met the old lady he lived with previously.

So we had a big fight and ultimately all that came of it is that I buried it and accepted it. I grew resentful and decided maybe I didn't even want to meet his kids anyway. I have my kids and I have fun with him, and that's where this ends, even though I wish he wasn't up his exes ass and I wish he was proud of me enough to let me simply MEET his kids. I've known this man since I was 15! Dated for a total of 3 years now. And I cant even MEET nearly adult kids?

I feel it's actually 1 of 2 things. It's actually the ex saying they can't meet me and he's covering for her by saying it's him that doesn't want me to meet them, OR it's true that he doesn't think I'm good enough to meet his kids. I honestly don't know which one is worse!!

Now, I'm done with the criminal cases, custody is final for now, the divorce is pending, and my lawsuit is finished - I won over a million dollars. He seems very different since I won. He is so happy and sweet, and very loving again. It's almost like the beginning. We have alot of plans together.

He said about me meeting his kids for Thanksgiving and I kind of realized I don't want it. I wasn't good enough then, so why am I suddenly good enough now?

Help me untangle this complex web. There's more here than just a stepparent dynamic, and I apolgize for that. I've never been a stepparent and heck, I've never even met his kids. I feel like a year was an incredibly long time to wait and am offended by his reasoning, or protection of his exes demands. A part of me wanted to be a family and have all the kids together, but since he's cut me so many times, I kind of just want to have fun with him and stay distanced from him on a deeper level.

I need help and appreciate your insight.

Edit: I took all the advice and broke up with him. He called me a narcissist and immediately blocked me on all social media, insulted me, and said to never talk to him again. It's hard but had to be done.

Update Found out after 8 months !Update!

I posted earlier this year about being in a step-adjacent dynamic. I was with a man who waited 8 months to tell me he had a daughter. Well, I left, and my psych said it'd be not a terrible idea if I update. I'm out. No more drama, no more raising some man's kid for him, no staying with a guy who lies to me. Gonna go be 22 and young and dumb (and not a pretendo mom to a kid that's not mine for a man who doesn't do the parenting for his own self). Yippie.

That's all. Thanks to everyone who told me to gtfo in the first place <3

Vent SK with behavior issues

My SS6 has had a major change in behavior over the past several months. He’s been stealing, lying constantly, bullying, fighting, vandalizing school property, wandering away from class, ignoring instructions, and acting impulsively and recklessly. He used to be a sweet kid who did well in school, but now his behavior is affecting nearly every environment, and neither parent seems to know how to handle it. Punishments, grounding, and rewards don't seem to work, and spending time with him has become exhausting because it's constant correcting and redirecting. I suspect ADHD, but I'm also concerned about what could be causing such a significant change. What should our next steps be, and is there hope that things will get better? It’s becoming hard for me to be want to be around and that sucks because I love this kid, we created a bond. But I’m tireddd. The weekends are my only days off and this whole weekend was spent dealing with back to back bad behavior. We slept over at DH’s sisters house and every single adult had to pull him about something. He almost broke their $2000 camera that we explicitly told him NOT to touch. I tried to make a post with more context and explaining some of the stuff he was doing but it was sooooo long.
