Before you ask "What does this Tattoo mean".

Firstly the writing in these tattoos is NOT Thai, and many Thai people cannot read them. Usually only people with special religious or monastery training, such as monks, can read them and understand the meaning. Often the mantra is specific to the monk who applies the tattoo, and may be custom made for the individual.

The text is usually in Pali or Khom script. These are usually sacred images and mantras used for various reasons. Here is some additional information and some references:

The religious symbols used in Sak Yant tattoos are called Yantra. Yantra are sacred geometrical, animal, or deity designs that are accompanied by Pali or Khom phrases. These designs are common in Dharmic religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism.

Sak Yant tattoos typically consist of three components:

  1. The Yantra (the sacred design)
  2. The Pali or Khom text
  3. The associated mantra

Some common Yantra symbols found in Sak Yant tattoos include:

- Sun Symbol: A small circle representing the influence of stars and planets on living beings

- Unalome: A zig-zag spiral line symbolizing the path to enlightenment

- Gao Yord: Representing the nine peaks of Mount Meru, a mythical mountain in Buddhist cosmology

- Animal designs: Such as tigers (Suea-koo) symbolizing strength and fearlessness

- Deity designs: Like Hanuman, the monkey god, representing resilience and determination

These Yantra symbols are believed to offer various benefits to the bearer, such as protection, fortune, charisma, and spiritual power.

Here is a video by Stuart J Raj where he explains some of the meaning of the characters in the mantra.

Language “What does this mean in Thai/English?” — Post Your Translation Requests Here

Please post all translation requests in this megathread. To keep things organized, we’ll remove standalone translation posts made outside this thread under Rule 5 and redirect them here. General language discussions are still welcome in the regular r/thai feed.

What goes here

  • 🇹🇭 Thai ↔ 🇺🇸 English translations: Signs, chat logs, handwriting, images, and documents.
  • ⚡️ Quick language questions: Short queries on grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation.

**Native Thai speakers* are kindly asked to prefix their translations with 🇹🇭 so users know the source and quality. Fluent non-natives are still welcome to help.*

Getting Translations

Standard Subreddit Rules apply here. Additionally, there are some tips that improve the translation request:

  1. 💡 Include context: Thai is heavily context-dependent. State where you found the text and what was happening.
  2. Post legible images: Blurry crops or low-resolution images make it more difficult. Use direct Reddit uploads or link via Imgur.
  3. 🤖 Run it through an LLM first: Test your text with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or DeepSeek before posting. They handle Thai grammar far better than Google Translate.
  4. 📄 Paste your draft: If you already used an AI tool, paste its output so volunteers can pinpoint where the machine failed.
  5. ⏳ Wait patiently: Replies come from volunteers and usually take anywhere from an hour to a day.

Thanks, and happy translating!

Other Looking for new friends to hang out with in Bangkok. I’m thai but not so thai.

I’m (31m) thai but was raised abroad since 8 years old so I feel more like a foreigner than an actual thai. I’m based in Bangkok.

Thailand feels more like a place for vacation rather than my home country. I’d like to change that and feel more like a local by making friends that live in Bangkok.

I plan to move to Thailand so I came here this trip to see what it’s like to live here for a bit. Looking for new friends to hang out with to feel more like an actual Bangkok local. Maybe show me around and introduce me to new places.

I can speak and understand thai at a casual day to day life level of words. I can read thai a bit and very slow and can’t write or type in thai at all.

I’m a musician. I love music, guitars, traveling, food, movies, chill nightlife, night markets. Also into philosophy, psychology, spirituality or even just casual random conversations. Not so serious.

Also like to exercise and can play most sports. Tennis, golfing, biking, hiking, soccer, basketball, table tennis. I can talk about almost anything because I’m interested and open in learning new things from people.

Language Buddha Statue Script/Graphics Help

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hi There,

I'm hoping someone here may be able to help me - I visited Thailand in the early 2000's and during that trip I visited temples. One of which I made a donation and the monk gave me a bronze statue. It's been with me every since - I brought it back to Canada then when I moved in 2005 to Asia (Hong Kong/China) it was with me, I returned back to Canada in 2020.

The statue has some writing and graphics on the underside (it was plaster filled) - I'm wondering if anyone could help to shed some light on what it means? As I understand it, it's likely not thai but Sanskrit or Pali (thanks Gusto88)

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions and/or help you can provide. Thanks,

Daniel

Other 7-11 Tote Bags

I’m on my second last night in Bangkok and Thailand before heading home and I cannot find the 7-11 (larger) tote bags. Have checked random locations around IconSiam and Sathorn, among other smaller locations. Even in Phuket.

Does anyone know what locations in Bangkok still have stock available?

Please and thank you!

Tourism Getting around Koh Yao Noi as a family of 5 – Any advice?

Hi everyone!

We're a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids aged 8, 12, and 16), and we'd really love to visit Koh Yao Noi!

However, we're a bit worried about how to get around the island as a family of five.

Does anyone have any tips or experience with this?

Is it possible to rent a tuk-tuk and drive it ourselves? Would it even fit 5 people? Or maybe rent a car?

And let's be honest, going to Koh Yao Noi without being able to explore the island would be a shame, right?

Language Tips for learning Thai

Hello! My home is Malaysia, but my boyf is Thai. He and his family speak Thai pretty much only at home, so it’s nice to be surrounded by it but I want any and all tips for learning the language best I can because we are planning to get married and probably live in Thailand. But I want to be able to get by before we move out there.

For the record I only have experience with mandarin, English, Malay and a little Tamil but none of them are actually like Thai, as I’m sure you guys would know.

Thanks for reading!!

Tourism Opinions about Mae Sot

Hi Everyone!

Could you share your thoughts on Mae Sot? I've been offered a teaching position there for a few months through a TEFL program.

What is the situation like there, especially because it's so close to the Myanmar border? What is the area like in terms of scenery and nature?

I'd really appreciate it if you could take a moment to share your experiences or opinions with me. Thank you so much! 😊

Visa Airbnb on Visa exemption

Hi everyone,

I used to take +30 days on Airbnb when it was 60 days visa exemption.

Since the 30 days exemption, I plan to stay 28 days (in case flight got delayed) on my next trip, but I wanna have an Airbnb because I don't like hotel. To stay in the thai laws, I need to have 30 days minimum for Airbnb.

Can I take 30 days on Airbnb but stay only 28 days in regards to flights tickets ? how the IO will look at this if they ask me why the difference at immigration ?

Thanks in advance
