Megathread NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here!

Per the deluge of complaints we've gotten, all admissions, housing, questions about being new to UBC and general questions (that don't deserve their own thread, or those that could be easily googled) belong here.

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Confession So I found out I’ve had an aneurysm for a while, found out during exam season

Essentially title says it all. Got a pretty bad head injury from tripping and falling hitting the back of my head to the corner of a stage. Was really fucked up after getting up. Was fine after a day, just dizzy here and there. Then 2 weeks after the injury I got these incredibly painful headaches more painful than my worst period cramps. Did my Chem midterm though it anyway. When to ER and they did a CT, no brain bleed but they did find an aneurysm! Though they don’t think that’s what’s causing my migraines. Genuinely not sure how to navigate this semester with this shitttt any recommendations on wtf to do because I have talked to my profs but honestly I have no idea what I should be doing differently lifestyle-wise especially now knowing all this

Term isn’t going great

Basically the title. Registered for 5 classes this term because I thought I could handle it, but surprise surprise my mental health is even worse this year than it was last year, and I missed a bunch of classes for this one course because I physically couldn’t get out of bed because I’d spend the nights before just absolutely paralyzed with sadness, and I bombed the midterm so I ended up withdrawing from the course last night. I don’t even recognize myself anymore- skipping classes, withdrawing from a course, handing in every assignment late, not preparing for midterms and assessments. Even at my worst last year, it wasn’t to this extreme level of indifference. What makes it worse is that I want to be a good student, I want to do well so I can get a great job in the future, but it’s so goddamn hard to care about anything when your mental health is so shit. I just feel like a failure, I feel bad that I’m out $700 for dropping a course because I gaslighted myself into thinking I’m doing better now. I know university is not easy for anyone, but why is it so difficult for me to stay afloat? UBC was my dream school but nothing has gone as I imagined or planned now that I’m actually here.

Discussion Snow in Vancouver, BC?

Hey, everyone.

I’m an international applicant (24M) to UBC Vancouver (MA in Psychology [Clinical] for Fall 2027, wish me luck! I’m scared to death, LOL.)

I had a general question about the location itself. How much snow does it usually get? I heard it’s not exactly the snowiest place in Canada, but I wanted to confirm with the people who actually live in Vancouver. If I want to experience fun snow, are there nearby locations to travel to either by myself or with a university group/club?

Sorry if the question seems strange, though. I’m obviously not Canadian, so I’m trying to get to know the location better before my possible arrival.

midterms are here and im not doing well on those, i study so much only for me to bomb the actual assessments. i already failed two courses before and now it just might be three, as in three more courses to fail. ive been getting (im not even joking) 0’s on the assessments for one course and i just might get that same grade on the MIDTERM! only way i can redeem myself is to get a freaking 70% on the final… help

South is down cuz South Korea and north is up cuz North Korea

Or think of Texas (down south)

West and east are simple if you think of it as WEst, where W(west) is the first letter of the word to the left and E(east) is the second letter to the right of W.

Thank you

How to transition to different subjects when studying?

I have not grown good study habits since September hit 😭. I realized that I hyperfocus on one subject/assignment and take more time then my pomodoro timer. I would do the things that are due soon first, but I don't feel efficient as the other material (like studying or revisions) that I would like to get done, get pushed to the next day. It's also difficult for me to transition into a new subject as I still get hung up on other work. I feel overwhelmed and behind that I get so irritated at myself. I want to try other methods, what are study methods that work for you?

I've been skipping like 75% of my classes.. should i feel guilty🫪

Ok it takes me like 3.5 hours round trip to school and if I actually went to all of my classes, I don't think i'd even want to sit down and do more HW after a day of classes.

Some classes are just so BADLY taught that nothing is even being processing. Especially with the humidity levels in some classrooms when it's packed with people

Uh so is this the typical UBC experience cause like I see no correlation in "attend class" and "grades"

Confession Here is why I don't wait at the end of the line for the 99

People constantly stop loading into the bus before it is full!!

I take the 99 twice a week and at least once a week, if not twice, people at the doors stop getting on and let the bus leave when there is heaps of space!

Today I was walking up to the middle doors of the 99 as it was pulling away and there was lots of space and people waiting by the doors who chose not to get on.

And then because most people are looking at their phones, they just assume the bus is full without looking up and also stop and wait without going in.

I easily was able to get on the next bus and again, people chose to wait by the doors as soon as all the obvious seats were taken, letting the bus leave with space. I counted space for at least 3 people to sit and 12 people to stand comfortably.

So, because I can't trust people to actually load into the bus when there is space, I always walk past the line. I don't butt in while the line is still loading but if people choose to "wait", while there is still room, I'm going to hop on.

Dear Hennings: get it together with the heating

“Wow what a brisk morning. I can’t wait to warm up hennings” I thought to myself. I was then blasted by the surface of the sun.

HENN and I have beefed about the heat before, but today was unreal. Had to have been at least 27 C in there. Prof was visibly flushed and students were getting dizzy. My prof called maintenance immediately but we ended lecture early when they didn’t come at all in the HOUR we waited.

Like get it together. I’m the first to complain about the cold but cmon now. Ghosting the maintenance request is wild

Have had multiple midterms but just keep going blank

Hi I’m a first year, and had multiple midterms and I failed most of them, and it’s not that I don’t study but that once I have the papers in front of me my mind just goes blank I see the question and the words just don’t enter my brain and sometimes I remember the specific time and questions I practice for studying but just couldn’t recall how to do them properly, and everything around me just seemed to get so loud like the sound of people writing and even the sound of breathing, not to mention I had a drippy nose… honestly I feel like I have something wrong with me but have never gotten it diagnosed so I could be just hallucinating. Anyways, I was just wondering is it still possible to do alright by the finals even if the midterm I did recently is worth a quarter of my grade? Like genuinely I think I got 0 on it… I’m willing to put in the effort I just don’t know if I can push through with this awful anxiety and I don’t know how to improve my study techniques so I can retain information better. Is there any advice that I can get to help me push through or like study techniques I can try? Any advice will help and I’d be really thankful 🥹. Honestly I feel like an impostor because everyone around me if understanding things faster and seems so put together 😔

Discussion UPDATE: Prof asking for supporting documents from a verified person about my senior dog's declining health and my mental health declining due to that for midterm concession

The head finally responded to my email regarding everything but had a super vague reply telling me that she's been in contact and suggests that I email my prof for further steps. I am frustrated because I don't know what they've talked about or whether this is even going to change anything. I sent a reply back:

"Thank you for getting back to me.

Before I contact my professor again, could you clarify what to expect? Specifically, will she accept a self-declaration for my concession, as the Senate policy on academic concessions allows, or should I expect to be asked for documentation again?

I’d like to keep a good working relationship with my professor and I raised this only because the request for documentation didn’t align with the policy I’d been directed to by other instructors. I requested the concession on compassionate grounds and understood a self-declaration would be sufficient. I’m also happy to meet or have you joined the conversation if that would help resolve it smoothly.

If it’s helpful, I can share the specific policy language I’m referring to.

Thank you again for your help."

Is this a good message? Should I reach out to other profs to vouch for me? I feel really powerless and this makes me not want to go into class knowing that I might be looked at like a liar or someone purposely making their life hard. I have proof that I've gone to my counselling appointment but why should I need to provide that when it's my right by policy to not require it. Am I over-reacting? Is there any prof who would be wiling to help me?

Discussion HSP system glitches?

Has anyone been signing up for studies in the HSP system and automatically getting the credit even if you didn’t finish it? Two of my online studies that I signed up for automatically granted me the credit within a day when I haven’t even clicked on the website.

It’s kinda nice obviously but I also wouldn’t want to mess up the researcher’s study and I didn’t do this on purpose. Anyone else have this issue? Should I contact the researchers?

Course Question Is it bad that I just want to pass?

Is it a bad mindset to just want to pass everything? (Like get the credits without caring about super high grades). I want to focus on my mental health and also training. I'm only a first year not planning on grad school and I want to do well but passing (each class and getting credit) to me is a win on its own. Is that bad?
