Discussion Suggestions/help on a good future?

I’m planning on going into the union come February. My uncle is retired from the Operators and suggested I start with Labors to get some experience (since I have none). Could you guys/gals possibly give me some advice on what to do/look forward to in terms of moving into a professional, well paid trade once I am an apprentice? I am 26 years old and want to get my future started, better now then never. Thank you

Discussion Wanting ideas on how to encourage member participation

I recently began a State position covered by an existing collective bargaining agreement between the union and the State and I am interested in learning more about how unions build and sustain influence. In my view, member participation could be increased through additional incentives. It is unclear to me why members who contribute only dues receive the same benefits as active members who invest significant time and effort in supporting the union. The current union appears to face challenges with encouraging meeting attendance and my attempts to become more involved through my local president have gone unanswered. This may be due to burnout, but overall I have found the level of engagement to be disappointing.

Labor News Rest in power, Dolores Huerta. ¡Sí se puede!

• Upvotes

This is a profound loss for me as a woman in the labor movement. There's something especially heartbreaking about her death coming so soon after she publicly shared what she had endured and carried silently for decades. She spent nearly a century fighting for other people, often without receiving the credit she deserved herself. She was a trailblazer. She organized historic boycotts, negotiated groundbreaking contracts, and spent her life fighting for working people. Yet her leadership and accomplishments were too often overshadowed.

Her contributions to the labor movement are immeasurable, and her legacy deserves to be remembered and taught for generations to come ✊💙
