Friendly reminder
Hi all,
So it looks like every uni subreddit has been a bit weird recently (the top post on r/usyd right now is something related to femboys).
This is just a PSA to keep things UNSW-related. There was a meme on the front page a day or two ago that was literally just clash of clans, that sort of stuff we're going to remove from now on. Check out the subreddit rules on the wiki for more info.
Also, a reminder that discriminatory/ derogatory posts are never allowed. Same goes for harassment/those creepy posts from people looking to hook up that have popped up recently. Anyone posting this kind of content will be banned without warning. Please report these kinds of posts if you see them so we can remove them as soon as possible.
Enjoy flexi-week,
the r/UNSW mod team

51M mature age student looking for love (for my son)
Hello! My name is Avery and I am mature age student studying computer science. I have a son aged 20 who's also doing computer science in the same university as me (UNSW). We are both flatmates and I have realised that he doesn't get much action. Now he doesn't know that I am setting this up, so I think the best way (if you decide you are interested) is to approach him randomly in the library. Here is an about-him section:
Favourite hobby: Lego (I see him playing with his Legoes all the time)
Favourite TV show: Cobra Kai (he watches it all the time)
Favourite quote: "No you didn't. The fight is only over when you say it is" (John Kreese from cobra kai. He says this quote all the time).
Favourite game: Roblox
Favourite book: (doesn't read)
Favourite drink: Chocolate milkshake at McDonalds.
Status: Single and unemployed
Thanks so much for reading!

UNSWFAC (gym) is a scam
UNSWFAC overcharges for our own student and staff and is a pretty shite gym anyway (overcrowded, unsafe and dirty) does not enforce their towel policy and there are usually lines of up to 3 people for some machines. And all this for a price of $21 per week being more expensive than literally every other gym membership (with unswfac having only 1 location). Moreover they charge $200 for the cancellation fee (for the FLEX membership) which is bullshit and an extra $20 for late payments and hiding this underneath their 30 page contract that you cant even read because their website is laggy. The workers are dickheads and dont know what they are doing and would willingly hang up phone calls. All while plastering themselves all over UNSW. I want to start a formal complaint, Please do give me your experiences with them down below

Self-organised summer law internship
I need to do a self-organised law internship over the summer and was wondering if anyone on here has done one before? I've done some research on the UNSW website, but would love to hear from people who have done it before as I don't know anyone who has/nor can I find any mention of it on this subreddit. Or if you've done a non-law self-organised internship, I would appreciate your perspective too. Thank you :)

For people who did the course previously, any tips for the group presentation and report? What is expected for us to get CO (competent) in order to pass?

Ok, it's over 1st day back not good
Ok subject breakfast is back in unsw. first day didnt go so well.
i got out of the lightrail at anzac parade and first thing that i witness is a 6'6 chad walk past me with 2 girls around his arms. No biggie, subject breakfast experiecnes that all the time. But one thing stood out, it was that he was wearing a usyd hoodie, I thought to myself. Impossible! usyders dont get girls! i asked one of his goons how hes done that and they explained that unsw girls like bad boys that go usyd. it made me really question my enrolment at the number one uni.
so that was a strange experience, then i crossed the road to the mighty entrance of unsw and immediately was barged into by a girl not looking straight. unfortunately my bag was open and my laptop fell out and cracked, i thought this situation could be salvaged since she was beautiful and we could have those movie like scenes but instead she just blurted out "EWW" and thats when i noticed my bottle of orange juice broke and spilt everywhere making it look like i pissed everywhere.
i had to scurry away from the crowd whilst the girl was saying how i assaulted her to the people around her
i took refuge in law library where i then sat down to drink the remainder of the juice and throw out any evidence, but when i sat down i was confronted by 3 big dudes explaining that i just took their spot. I said ill go away but then they noticed i had some orange juice on my pants which looked liked piss and once again i had to run out of the building
i was then late to my lab and just ended up not going. Hows your first day back gang

till what time is it safe to take public transport and be out in sydney?
random australian news channel reels keep popping up on my feed time to time and they're always talking about people getting stabbed and robbed
but every person i've spoken to says the city is incredibly safe so i'm really confused
i'll be moving to sydney for uni next year term 1 and will most likely be commuting everyday. it takes around 40 minutes for me to go home and back.
i'm a girl so i'm a little worried about safety etc
so what is a safe time to be out till? till when is public transport crowded?

Weekly Discussion Need laptop recommendations as a mechanical engineer (description)
So I’m basically going to start in around a month and I’m not really set on which laptop to buy, I’ve been thinking about getting me one that will last me for the next 4-5 years Atleast and my eyes have been set on a Lenovo thinkpad P16 gen2, I’ve seen its parts and they do look really good
I’m planning on using it for basically 99% of my work and studies and (in my free time) some games like Minecraft or no man’s sky for example
My budget is around 5-7k depending on what to take, I have been thinking about getting a small iPad to go alongside the laptop but Idrk if that’s overkill :p
Any insight or help will be greatly appreciated ty all :D

Degree Discussion which accounting/finance/eco courses have exam-styled essays?
For context I'm planning to major in the more quantitative sides of the business school (that wont make me kms) and want to avoid courses like comm1180 to jumpscare me with a case-study marketing essay in the exam EVEN THOUGH IT'S CONSIDERED A FINANCE-BASED IFYC. Btw this is strictly talking about EXAM essays and not ones that you do in a project or assignment which don't put you in an inapplicably ridiculous amount of time pressure for people who can't write that fast.

How are UNSW Terraces 2-bedroom allocated? I applied at 12:05 and got nothing, but my roommate applied at 12:08 and got an offer
I’m honestly so frustrated.
My roommate and I both live at Barker Apartment. UNSW Accommodation specifically emailed us before saying that current Barker residents would receive priority when applying for 2027 accommodation. Applications opened at 12 pm, and I submitted mine within the first few minutes, receiving a confirmation email at 12:05. My roommate applied at 12:08, and she's already got a Terraces 2B offer. I've got nothing.
I contacted the accommodation office and they said my application was received and "considered", but it's not first come first served, they look at a bunch of factors, and 2B is now full. I get that applying early doesn't guarantee anything, but we're both Barker residents and I applied before my roommate, so what exactly were the factors that made the difference? They didn't explain anything.
And this isn't even the first time. They missed sending me an important email before, I contacted them, they apologised, and then nothing changed.
The only alternative they've offered me is a five-person room at Cowper Street, which is not remotely the same as 2B.
I’ve been really anxious about this for the past few days. Renting off campus in Sydney is already expensive and difficult. I followed the application process and submitted everything on time, only to be left in this situation without even being told why.
UNSW accommodation, seriously, this allocation process plus this communication is just unacceptable. Unclear rules, emails going missing, and a vague "we consider multiple factors" to brush people off.
Also, has anyone been through something similar? Is there a way to appeal? Let me know if you know anything, thanks.
