Ravi Tamta, a young man from Kaflikhan village in Almora district, has successfully built and flight-tested a single-seater electric flying car prototype called HAPIDA SKYNeX.
Ravi has no formal engineering or technical degree. He is a Bachelor of Arts (BA) graduate from the Kumaun University Nainital campus.
Ravi's father, Harish Ram, works as a local mechanic, which originally sparked his interest in fixing and innovating machinery. Without access to fancy laboratories or funding, Ravi spent nearly 13 years researching, experimenting, and teaching himself aerodynamics and engineering principles through the internet.
Using modified drone-based vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) technology, he engineered the prototype frame, cockpit, and multi-rotor battery propulsion system using a mix of components sourced locally and from abroad.
In August 2026, Ravi officially registered his venture, Hapida Sky Private Limited, and conducted a manned test flight right in Almora.
With local residents and officials watching, Ravi personally piloted the vehicle, which successfully hovered steadily in the air for about a minute.
His motivation came from the struggles we face every day in the hills. He noticed how winding, treacherous mountain roads turn a short linear distance into a multi-hour journey, which becomes fatal during medical emergencies when reaching a hospital quickly is a matter of life and death.
His ultimate goal with HAPIDA SKYNeX is to bypass road blockages, landslide zones, and difficult terrain, potentially slashing painful 2-hour road journeys down to just a 10-15 minute flight.
Innovation doesn't belong to IITs or corporate tech hubs in Bengaluru. Sometimes, it starts in a tiny village workshop in Almora with a laptop, an internet connection, and pure, unfiltered determination.
People like Ravi need the right backing, incubation, and government opportunities to scale their ideas safely.
Proud moment for Uttarakhand ❤️
