Welcome to r/Vinegaroons
This is a place to discuss everything around these unknown yet fascinating arachnids.
As of the 19 of January 2019 This subreddit has been updated to include Whipspiders and shorttailed whipscorpion Since the name is fixed, we are going to back to uropygi only, feel free to create your own amblypygi subreddit !
Here anything related to these animals is allowed to be posted, but no out of context or NSFW content will be tolerated. 1 out of the 11 orders of arachnids, these animals are widely distributed in desertic and mostly tropical climates around the world. Vinegaroons can be kept as pet, and the care for them is very simple. This subbreddit is aimed at providing any information about these creatures and how to care for them.
For more informations, feel free to ask around but i also highly recommend this book (and the others) by Orin McMonigle :
Here is a fantastic blog article about them, and this is some more general informations about the genus Mastigoproctus. Hope you have a good time here and learn something new !

Vinegaroon Vendor List
Hi everyone!
I love vinegaroons, and I think that they are some of the best bug pets you can get. I'm sure that all of you fellow r/vinegaroons members love them too!
Inspired by a post pinned to r/amblypygids, I wanted to create a place where we could share vinegaroon vendors, both in-person and online. Here are some online vendors from three different countries (US/CA/UK) that have great ratings and treat their animals well:
United States:
Canada:
United Kingdom:
If you want to share your own vendors, go ahead! You can use this template for comments, once again based off of r/amblypygids's useful list:
Vendor Name:
Vendor Website or Profile:
Purchase Date:
Country:
Instar & Species of Animal:
Did the animal arrive in good condition?
If in-person, was the animal's care adequate?
Overall Rating (1 - 10):
If a vendor that you bought from already appears somewhere on this post or in the comments, don't worry! Feel free to share it anyway-- every experience is different, and every vinegaroon is important.
Have fun with all of your vinnies! š

Vinegaroon enclosure size
Hi there! I've been wanting a vinegaroon for a really long time and I decided to finally get one. Or rather I will get one after the winter is over to not risk anything happening to it in transport, which leaves me the winter to plan and build the enclosure.
One thing I keep running into as an issue is that I keep getting conflicting information as to what the right enclosure size for a vinegaroon is. right now I have an unused 20 gallon tall aquarium I could convert into an enclosure, but some folks are saying this is too big and the vinegaroon is going to have trouble finding folks and some folks are saying this is okay but only after the vinegaroon has grown for a bit. I was wondering if I could get some perspectives on this.
Also I know vinegaroons are not really climbers so I am assuming adding rocks and wood isn't needed or welcomes? Can it be bioactive (like adding springtails and such) or is it better to just have the vinegaroon?
Thanks to anyone who can help me figure this out.

Baby Vin questions
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hello! In April I got a small Vinegaroon from a reptile expo from a local breeder. Iāll attach the video of the day I got them (not their enclosure obviously) (will add more vids in comments)
How often do I feed the baby? Iāve been feeding based on size as Iām afraid of them getting fat. Is there a feeding size chart I can use?
How do I know theyāre healthy and growing? I rarely see them but theyāre a GREAT eater! I see the tan of their belly which is how Iāve been basing feeding them.
But I donāt know that theyāre growing. My tarantula will toss their molts out of their holes when theyāre done. But I donāt know when to upgrade my Vinny to a bigger enclosure, as I only see parts of them when they come to feed.

What is this??????
I bought this small vinegaroon about 4-5 months ago. What is this? It's very small still, it's about 3 inches in length.

No babies for now :(
Sadly our girl dropped her egg sack and is currently chomping away on them š«
Iām putting it down to husbandry stress as she was still in her shop āenclosureā and there isnāt nearly enough substrate for her and she didnāt even have time to burrow :( we hadnāt even looked at her since she dropped eggs on us to minimise stress
At least she can go into her forever home now and hopefully we might go back to the store and get the male she was originally paired with and start again!

Mite advice
Hi friends,
Iām new to this sub, and new to reddit overall. (I have posted this on r/Vivariums but Id like your guysā opinions too) Iāve recently introduced a springtail culture into my vinegaroons enclosure as she likes it quite warm and humid (because I donāt want mold!). I believe I got some hitchhikers too. They only showed up after I introduced the springtails however may have hitchhiked on my vinny as she is WC.
Iād say I have beginner - intermediate keeper experience as I have been taking care of my vinny alongside some tarantulas and other scorpions. The mites are a first for me however (unless I havenāt seen any up until now!)
From my understanding mites are benifical as they clean up too - so far they have been crawling around spots where my vinny has been eating (Iām assuming thereās some tiny mold growth there) so I believe them to not be directly harmful to my vinny.
My question is when do I need to start being concerned? They have been fine with my springtails so far, both species walking about the feeding area.

Vinegaroon Poop
Should I be spot cleaning my Vinnyās tank? I think Iām starting to notice bits of tan/white droppings that I assume are vinegaroon poop. (Who knew we live in a world where Iād ever get to see that?!)
Advice on how to spot clean without stressing my skittish guy?

New vinegaroon laid eggs help!
So we bought a female vinegaroon just over a week ago, she was plump and it never even crossed my mind she could have eggs.
Weāre still awaiting setting her up properly as we wanted her to settle first, and yeah I was about to spray her down and sheās laid her eggs without burrowing.
What do we do? Obviously leave her alone but would they even be fertile? Do I continue to spray her enclosure?
I donāt mind loads of tiny babies but I donāt know the best way to support her during this time!!!
She is still moving slightly as I misted gently from above so I know sheās not dead just deflated after laying!
UPDATE: the eggs are most likely fertile, after speaking with the place I got her from she was paired with the male when the lady got them and she separated them so hopefully we will have some babiesss

Is start up ok? And other questions!
Hi! So I have this little guy, and wondering if this is an ok start up set up for him, and if it's normal that he isn't burrowing yet. He likes to hide in between the bark all the time, it's only been maybe 4-5 days and he has eaten a cricket already and had lots of water. I'm getting a heating pad too, and please ignore the paper towel the holes are too big and need a new topper.

Possible new owner questions?
I have not yet purchased a vinegaroon, but have done tons of research on them housing and feeding wise, but now I'm looking for temperaments and how well they are as pets. And what better place to get information like that than people who have first hand experience? So my questions are, what's it like owning a vinegaroon? Have you ever been sprayed by them, if so how bad does it stink? And how much did it cost you to buy the roon? I'm wanting a standard size vinegaroon, not a giant one.

Is my heating pad placement bad for my vinegaroon?
Everything I saw online said not to put the heating pad where the burrow would be but now she isn't using her deep hide, instead she's burrowing down herself into where the heating pad is which is the exact opposite of what I was told would happen... Should I just move the heating pad to the side where the burrow is?

New little one, looking for advice
I got this little one from a friend. To me, he looks thin. These are the best pictures. Ive managed of the little one. Would it be beneficial to add in fake plants? I see some things that say it needs moisture, and other things that say it needs to be dry. I have all kinds of mosses I could add in. I just wanna make sure the cutie lives to its fullest potential.

Molting humidity questions
My Vinny began its molt back in the beginning of February, I know I need to wait much longer to assume it didnāt survive.
My main concern is that I have been letting the substrate get too dry. I probably mist it about every 4 weeks. I never see the bottom inches get bone dry, but they donāt stay deep dark.
Iām wondering if I effed up and let it get too dry and killed my Vinny. If I didnāt, would it be wise to put a 1-2 inch layer of moistened sphagnum to retain moisture?

Status Check!
Checked on mine for the first time in probably like 7-9 months, didnāt touch it cuz I didnāt wanna disturb it. It didnāt move, but it looks like anatomically okay??? Just fat cuz molting? Please lmk if I should really make sure itās alive and moving or it looks fine. I donāt trust myself not to somehow stress it out by checking its movement. I have inexplicably lost one Iām worried about bit.

Do vinegaroons hibernate this early?
My beautiful daughter, Carcie, is an adult female of that Iāve owned for ~7 months. She is usually very active. I saw her a little over a week ago, being a lil bulldozer and making her burrow bigger. I put her regular food in earlier this week and she hasnāt eaten it. This is VERY strange for her.
Is she like the pumpkin spice latte and thinks itās š fall weather š when it is still a sweaty early September? Or am I right to fear the worst (that she has taken the Eternal Hibernation) ?

Enclosures For Baby
Would this be an appropriate enclosure for a 2nd instar vinegaroon or is it too much ventilation/too small?
It's an enclosure I already had and I've been considering a vinny for some time now, though I can easily get something else for one if it's no good.
Edit: Forgot to say, it's Mastigoproctus tohono
