Classes 2026-2027 Scheduling Megathread

Hey everyone! Summer time and early fall means everyone is thinking about their next semester’s course schedule, especially incoming first years! It’s an exciting time planning out the interesting courses you get to take, and lots of people like to ask for advice on this sub.

We’re lucky to have lots of experienced alums, current students, and professors active here who know the courses well as well as schedules that keep you on track, stimulate your intellect, save some time for ECs, and don’t burn you out!

Please, post your draft schedules and questions in this megathread just to consolidate these types of posts in one place to keep the sub more easily scrollable. Thanks!!

Classes Where to park as a guest taking an on campus course?

Hello! I'm a student at SLU and I have the opportunity to take a graduate course through the Brown School this spring and potentially this summer as well. What are my parking options? The classes I'm looking at taking are a minimum of 3 hours long. I live in Valley Park and have to drive to work in the evening after class, so driving to class is preferable over taking the metro.

I will be graduating this spring, and I have some free credits to take. Does anyone have any suggestions on interesting courses that aren't extremely academically rigorous?

Discussion Does WashU lack school spirit compared to other elite institutions?

I can’t help but feel that WashU would be an even better place if there were more emphasis on sports like college football, basketball and other Division I sports. If you ever get the chance to visit another campus, you’ll likely feel the same way. Sports will always be an integral part of campus culture.

Even the campus rec/gym is small and mediocre compared to smaller state schools.

I love attending WashU. Most people I know that have attended WashU loved their time here as well. We’re an academic powerhouse with great professors and some really nice dorms. However, we’ll never be a Top 10 institution if we don’t focus on improving other aspects of college life as well. That’s why Duke and Vanderbilt will always be more recognized than us. Our endowment is over $17 billion. Insufficient funds isn’t the reason why we’re not improving things. Anyone else feels this way?

Classes After Meeting Prerequisites - is McKelvey transfer formality

If a freshman Wash U A&S major meets all academic and application requirements, is a transfer to McKelvey then close to a formality? Are space concerns a hurdle for BME? This is a question for a high school senior weighing odds of applying directly to McKelvey or transferring to McKelvey after demonstrating ability. High school coursework includes AP Calc AB but not taking AP Physics course.

Discussion How is POLSCI 3160-01 - Business and Politics and POLSCI 3565 - Understanding Political Protest and Violence?

I'm exploring a political science major and am looking for some classes to get 15 credits for spring semester. These classes caught my eye and I wanted to hear how past students felt about these them and professor Betz Timm and Yao Elaine C for Business and Politics and Understanding Political Protest and Violence Respectively.

Also I'm interested in any 3000-4000 econ classes that are interesting but manageable and any political science classes that can contribute to my major would be helpful.

Classes AMCS 3706: Existential Approaches to American Music

Hey all! Just wanted to let you know that I will be teaching a course entitled "Existential Approaches to American Music" in the Spring! It's gonna be a really fun class that dives into both the existential canon and a number of American artists! Here's the course description:

This course introduces students to existential philosophy as a way of understanding how music reflects, embodies, and aestheticizes our attempts to make sense of ourselves and the world around us. We will engage with thinkers such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and Simone de Beauvoir as well as recent scholarship that has expanded on their writings to consider how these ideas can deepen the ways we listen to, discuss, and make music. We will explore questions of freedom, authenticity, anxiety, identity, meaning, and self-creation while considering music as an existential practice. As a class we will discuss, dissect, and debate the music of a wide range of artists, including Ornette Coleman, Kendric Lamar, and the Linda Lindas, considering the various ways existential philosophy can explicate their music. Through situating music as an existential action, students will deeply reflect on the ways music is used as a tool to customize not only one’s life, but their sense of self.

Happy to answer any questions you would have about the course and hope to see you sign up for it!

Discussion To Black Girls at WashU: Where do you get your hair done?

Are there hair-salons in the area for curly hair? Braiders? Extension/Weave? Other types of hairstylists for black girls? Are the hair salons/stylists full service or just the styling? If so, how far and how do you get there?

This is a pretty important thing for me to consider because I have always had my hair done by someone else. I don’t have my hair in its natural curly state often because I’ve never learned (and honestly have been discouraged) to do my hair myself. Now I might have to learn before college, but I’d like an honest answer about hair-salon accessibility. And if you do your hair yourself, I want to know that too :)

Discussion What's the life off campus

I was just wondering how's the weather, access to grocery, and social life on campus? I'm from NYC and washU is one of if not the top school for me. People say the weather might not be amazing. Also, is there a Trader Joes near school? I love Trader Joes

Classes Orgo

Serious question since everyone seems to think it’s a lot - do many people drop out of premed because of orgo? I know one kid who decided to drop out of premed after a gen chem exam but they may have decided before. Do people who drop out lose interest in going through the premed grind or are they scared off by orgo specifically? don’t know if I’m saying this right but was wondering whether orgo is a good way of deciding fit for med school.

Admissions Do you guys like it there?

Basically the title...I'm trying to decide if I should apply early action to Washu for psychology. I know there will be quite a bit of voluntary response bias but I was hoping to get an overall sense of the amount of satisfaction people have with the school. Thanks!

Classes Looking to Audit a French Language Class

Hey everyone! I’m an international LL.M. student at the law school. I heard from some JD peers that you can “audit” a class even if you don’t want the credit. I also heard there are French classes in the Romance Languages & Literatures department, and I’d love to take a basic French class. However, considering its October, would I be considered too late to get in? And on that note, does auditing even require me to be present from the start of the semester or possibly inform my academic advisor?

Any help would be appreciated!

Housing Subletting my room near campus for spring (Jan-May, summer optional), $845/mo + utils

Hey everyone, I'm going abroad for spring semester, so I'm looking for someone to sublet my room at 5855 De Giverville Ave from January through May. You're also welcome to stay through the summer if you want. Dates are flexible if you need to move in a bit early or late.

The room is a private bedroom on the third floor with a queen bed, adjustable standing/sitting desk, closet, and more. I share a bathroom with just one other guy and he's super clean and considerate.

It's a house with 3 other guys who are chill and easy to live with. The kitchen is really nice and the living room is a good spot to hang out. We also have a backyard.

It's less than a mile from campus AND theres a shuttle stop even closer if you don't want to walk all the way or drive.

There's free street parking and we have a carport around the back.

Rent is $845/mo plus utilities split with the house. I'll handle the lease stuff with the landlord.

DM me if you're interested. Happy to send photos or FaceTime if you're not in town.

Does anybody know of any places near the Danforth campus worth applying to for a part-time job? Specifically, that work around student schedules, something in the evenings or on weekends. I've had no luck with on-campus job applications
