Hi everyone,
I’m a researcher from Portugal working with cetaceans, and I’m involved in several research projects, including work on the Iberian orca population. I’ve had the opportunity to observe and study these animals firsthand, which has given me a close look at some of the behaviors and interactions that have attracted so much attention in recent years.
The situation surrounding the Iberian orcas is increasingly critical, and at the same time there is a huge amount of misinformation, speculation, and misconceptions circulating online. Some claims are based on misunderstandings of orca behavior, while others have been dramatized and/or repeated so often that they’re now treated as facts.
For that reason, I decided to make this post as an opportunity to share information from a scientific perspective, clarify what we actually know, and hopefully debunk some of the more common myths surrounding these interactions.
I’m happy to discuss the subject and answer questions where I can, while also being clear about what is established by research and what remains uncertain.

Video notes:
These whales have never been seen alive. We know these whales they exist. We’ve found them washed up on beaches. In some cases, we have audio recordings of their vocalizations and echolocation clicks. But they’ve never been observed in the wild...

They are Andrews’ beaked whale, Perrin’s beaked whale, and the Spade-toothed whale. Three members of the beaked whale family, widely considered to be the least understood and most cryptic group of mammals in the world. 24 species of beaked whales are currently recognized and in the last five years alone… two new species were described for the first time ever. And there might be others that are still waiting to be discovered.
Like the Cross Seamount beaked whale, “The whale that’s known only by the sound of its voice.” It’s a potentially new species of beaked whale that we’ve heard and recorded, but never seen. And no specimen has ever washed ashore or stranded.
There are good reasons we never see these mysterious animals. Beaked whales live in deep offshore waters, far from the coast. And they spend most of their lives down near the abyssal plain. Far deeper than sperm whales or elephant seals can dive. And they do it while holding their breath for almost 4 hours.
Cuvier’s beaked whale holds the record as the deepest-diving mammal on Earth, descending to depths exceeding 3,000 meters or 10,000 feet. That’s far deeper than sperm whales have ever been recorded. Somehow, beaked whales only need a few minutes to recuperate at the surface before heading back down to the abyssal plain.

Hi, I booked a trip to Azores in March, mainly because it is blue whale season.
Has anyone here done the whale watching from a zodiac boat in late march on Azores? How roughed up can one end up being after a 3-hour tour? The company we want to do the trips with is Espaco Talassa and they provide waterproof jacket and a life west.
We are planning 2x 3h trips with them and 1 full day trip to Sao Jorge. Should we book more to see the blue whale or will we be totally roughed up due to the weather already after day two?
I am asking mainly to know how to prepare - should we bring extra clothes and leave them in the car?
Will we need a shower after or can we just perhaps swtich up the clothes and then go on with our day visiting some other places on the island for the rest of the day?
If anyone has done trips with them or similar companies like this in march - your advice is greatly appreciated.
I have only done whale watching twice now - once from San Diego in August and once in Taiwan - also in August, so the weather conditions were totally different and the boat was bigger - not a zodiac.
Thank you! PIC is not mine but from the internet

I couldn't believe my eyes when the spray cast by the blowhole met the sunlight and cast a rainbow.

Does anyone know if there is a post anywhere to discuss the transfer of the Beluga whales from Canada to USA and France and what is happening to the whales now after the move? No one in my actual life cares but I really need people to talk to.
