Every time I check the news it always something about Luma, the lack of water in San Juan, or something about the governor.
But I have yet to here anyone talking about arguably the biggest issue going on in the island: the population crisis.
The overall population has declined roughly 17% since its peak in 2004, from 3.8 million down to 3.2 million.
The median age in 46 years old, compared to the United States media of 39 and 31 years old globally.
The birth rate is almost the lowest in the entire world, at 0.9, far lower than the 2.1 replacement level.
As the population continues to get older and more Puerto Ricans leave the workforce once they qualify for social security, who's going to be left to work? To maintain the infrastructure? To pay taxes? To take care of the elderly?
There's a reason why so many young Puerto Ricans are leaving the island to go to the US mainland: there are no opportunities here for them. Even if you do manage to get a college degree, you're barely making $15/hr. And it's not like living here is cheap. Groceries prices are high, electric rates are insane compared to the US, fuel prices as well. And if you're not blessed to be living with a relative or have inherented their house, you're stuck paying high rent prices too.
So why aren't people speaking up more to improve the quality of life and generate new opportunities for the future of Puerto Rico? I suspect part of it is because the older generation simply does not care. They have everything they need: were lucky enough to get a home and land when property was dirt cheap, lives off social security and gets food stamps. They don't live the struggles that young Puerto Ricans have to live daily. They think it's easy to get a high paying job. They're completely unaware of what it costs to rent an apartment, how much a beat up used car costs now. The only thing they're aware of is the increasing electric rates so that's what they end up complaining about.
The mentality of the island needs to change and it needs to change NOW. Because in a decade if things continue to progress like this, mainlanders will be buying up property left and right and this will become their home, not ours.
