Hello,

Welcome to r/antivirus's new top-level Announcements post. Since Reddit has a limit of two (2) stickied announcements per subreddit, this will be a way to provide links to important information like announcements about new rules and moderators, activities in the subreddit, and so forth. If you are new to r/antivirus, please take a quick look at them. You can even take a look if you are not new here.

Additionally, the r/antivirus subreddit operates a bit differently than other subreddits you might be familiar with and normally use. Here are some tips and tools to help you use it.

  • The subreddit has a wiki that is regularly updated with answers to commonly-asked questions. Check it out. The answer to your question may already be in there.

  • Asking a question about a report on a file or website from a service like Hybrid Analysis, MetaDefender, Triage, or VirusTotal? You must include the actual link to it and not just a screenshot, or your post will be removed.

  • Be kind to each other and be professional in your conduct here. Personal attacks will not be tolerated and will be dealt with appropriately.

  • Do not ask for copies of hacking tools, malware, or suspicious files. If someone sends you a chat request or private message asking for a file or offering assistance based on what you posted here, report them to Reddit and notify the mods.

  • Do not post direct links to malicious, suspect, or potentially unsafe files or web sites.

  • Follow Reddiquette. This means correctly upvoting and downvoting posts, and reporting posts with dangerous or unsafe advice to the mods.

  • If you work for a vendor of security products, services, or in a related field, you must identify yourself as such, either in the post or with flair. Also, you may not steer conversations to your products or services, only respond to posts about them to clarify or defend.

  • No low-effort, off-topic, spam, or meme posts. This includes AI/ChatGPT/LLM-generated text, questions about password manager or VPNs, requests for assistance with non-security related software like autoclickers or MP3 downloaders, and so forth.

  • No requests for assistance with pirated software or media.

  • Posts may be removed and threads closed at any time based on the moderators' discretion

The complete list of rules for the subreddit can be found here. Read them before posting.

Questions, comments, feedback on this post? Just reply here. Thank you.

[MOD POST] New rules, staying safe, and an update from your Mod Team

[UPDATE #1 (20250604-0916 GMT): Made some small updates to grammar for readability. ^AG]

Hello,

It has been about a year since our last Mod Post, so we wanted to give you an update on things, plus provide a dedicated message thread for discussing the state of the r/antivirus subreddit and to answer any questions that you might have.

We will begin with the toughest subject first, that of politics in the subreddit:

A note about politics

r/antivirus is a technology-focused subreddit, with the interest being in helping people protect their computers from malicious software, securing them after a security incident, and so forth.

In June 2024, the US Government enacted a ban on Kaspersky Lab's software, taking effect in October of that year. This has generated a lot of discussion not just in this subreddit, but across Reddit and numerous social media platforms as well.

The moderation team has tried to keep the political discussions about this out of this subreddit and to remain neutral, allowing Kaspersky Lab's customers to ask and answer each other questions, provide assistance to each other, and generally have a way to share information, tips and tricks with each other.

However, we do have to draw a line when these turn into political discussions, though:

Requests for how to circumvent bans, petitions to governments, etc., are clearly outside the scope of what this subreddit is for and will be removed.

Moderating the subreddit is an all-volunteer job, and we sometimes miss things. If you come across any political messages we may have missed, use the subreddit's report function to notify us.

We are doing our best to keep this a place where people can get help with whatever security software they prefer, including Kaspersky Lab's software. However, we cannot allow discussions to devolve into arguments over politics, which are never going to provide any kind of satisfactory answer to the parties involved.

If the political discussions continue, the moderation team will have to look into ways to prevent them, even if it means doing things which we would prefer not to do.

Rules Updates

The rules of the r/antivirus subreddit have been updated:

Rule #7, which previously covered media download tools, has been updated to cover additional types of software.
To begin with, a more general prohibition to cover autoclickers (previously covered under Rule #8) and some other types of tools like aimbots and cheats. These types of tools often come from random sources and often require expert analysis to determine if they are safe. It can be difficult to determine if they are malicious figuring that out requires examining not just the tool, but whatever program it is attempting to modify, and what the intent is behind that modification.
Just because something was recommended in a Discord server with hundreds of members, a YouTube video with tens of thousands of views, or is seeded by several hundreds peers does not mean that it is safe to use: These are all inherently unsafe sources, and criminals will often exploit the belief that these are trusted sources to trick people into downloading and running malicious programs like information stealers and remote access trojans.

Rule #8 has been amended to remove autoclickers (etc.) since that is now covered under Rule #7.

Two new rules have been added:

Rule #9 covers bypassing core security features. Questions about how to disable security software, operating system updates, bypass security features and so forth are not allowed.

Rule #10 covers requesting assistance with obsolete software and hardware. This means discussions about how to secure computers running Windows XP, Windows 7, etc. are not allowed. There is no reason that devices running these obsolete operating systems should be connected to the internet and doing so exposes everyone to risk. Note that questions involving Windows 10 will continue to be allowed until at least October 2028, when paid-for Extended Security Updates for it end.

A bit more on the rules

The list of rules is not meant to be exhaustive in scope. It provides a general listing of common rules that are more specific to and more frequently required by the r/antivirus subreddit when needed beyond Reddit's general rules and guidelines.

Moderators can and will remove posts and ban redditors, either temporarily or permanently, who are disruptive to the subreddit entirely at their discretion and are not subject to any discussion. If a moderator chooses to discuss a rule violation with you, it is entirely as a courtesy on their part.

If you have had a post removed or been banned from the subreddit and do not receive a response in reply to any questions as to why, ask yourself if your behavior could be interpreted as brigading, spamming, trolling, using disrespectful or offensive language, or consistently providing incorrect, low-quality, poor, or even damaging information.

As always, the latest version of the rules can be found at https://old.reddit.com/r/antivirus/about/rules/. If you have questions about them, ask below.

Getting help fast

The moderation team is seeing an increasing trend where people ask for help while providing no information about what they need help with. This includes titles with 1-3 words like "Urgent! Help needed!", posts where the author shares a screenshot of *something* with no information about the operating system or antivirus involved, or is so small/blurry as to be unreadable, etc.

Everybody who participates regularly in this subreddit volunteers their time for free to do so. Provide them with enough information in your first post so they can start helping you right away without having to ask a lot of questions. This means your first post should contain things like:

  • title with enough information to attract an expert to read it
  • operating system and version
  • brand/name of antivirus software
  • name of URL, or file and its location
  • name of malware that was detected
  • what happened, exactly
  • steps you have taken to troubleshoot/diagnose so far, if any
  • relevant log file entries, if any

The more information you provide, the quicker you will get your problem solved.

As a reminder, starting multiple posts on the same topic will not get you a faster answer, and may result in in a ban.

The wiki + other Reddit resources

There is a lot of great information in the wiki about all the tools you can use, tips for using them, lists of antivirus vendors and how to contact them, and even a section on how to secure your computer.

We frequently update the wiki in response to questions being regularly asked in the subreddit, so you might want to check there first before posting.

Some of the questions we regularly see in the subreddit have nothing to do with computer viruses or malicious software at all, but instead are about scams, privacy-related questions, and so forth. Here are some subreddits that specialize in answering those types of questions:

New moderators?!

As the subreddit grows (we just passed 100K users), so does the need for additional moderators.

The moderation team has been looking at the folks who have been regularly posting here and consistently given good advice to build a list of candidates, and will be reaching out over the next few weeks to see if any are willing to volunteer their time and expertise in the subreddit. There will be more coming on that, but I did want to let everyone know that the process is already underway.

That pretty much covers everything we wanted to discuss, so we'll now await your questions, below.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

MALWARE REMOVAL Q&A Is this malware? What do I do?

Post image
• Upvotes

So I did a Microsoft Windows Defender antivirus' default offline scan, and it initially told me that preliminary scans possibly detected malware. After my computer restarted, I found this in my protection history. Is it a genuine malware?

I installed Bitdefender (free version) a couple days ago and ran a full system scan, and it showed that everything was safe. Ive also done a few Full Scans using the default Microsoft defender and it didnt detect anything like this either...

MALWARE REMOVAL Q&A I got hit by some Trojan bad

It killed Windows defender before it could contain it then deleted the history, Bit defender can't even open it just gets killed over and over again. I got Microsoft Safety Scanner up and running a scan and Malwarebytes but first Malwarebytes run failed to kill it as well. What do I do now in terms of trying more removal tools. I have about 4TB of data that I would hate to loose over this.

Am I basically a crypto miner?

I ran full scans with Malwarebytes and Webroot (took 6+ hours for each), but neither found anything.

This happens for the first 10-15 minutes after startup. I haven't downloaded any suspicious files, BUT... I did give Codex free rein over my coding environment, so there's that.

What's the best way to fix this without reformatting?

MALWARE REMOVAL Q&A Ran trojan executable, then defender quarantined after. Accounts stolen, reinstall necessary?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I ran what was supposed to be a game patch, was a bunch of python files and BS folders looked to make it like a patch. Defender quarantined two things, shown in the screenshots. The folders were still there earlier and a bunch others made from the same date, which I deleted. I also removed the files in quarantine

Battle.net and discord were both hacked 16 hours later, and all info changed. Is there anyone who got their discord back using any method? It looks like they added or changed 2fa to it. I am also wondering if scanning with Malwarebytes and defender offline is enough and changing all passwords, or if I need to reinstall Win11. Running the latest updates after the big security patches. I do not see anything that looks abnormal in Wireshark but could be wrong. I could link the compromised files that include the trojan, if needed.

Any help appreciated

Why is Windows Defender flagging the Epic Games Launcher as a trojan?

I just fresh installed Windows from a usb drive and when I was downloading the epic games launcher, Windows Defender immediately quarantined the download and then said that the epic games launcher was a trojan. Has anyone else experienced this and for anyone asking I did get the launcher from the official Epic Games website.

MALWARE REMOVAL Q&A Is window flickering a virus or am i insane?

I had an infostealer a month ago on my pc presumably from some shady game downloads, reinstalled windows 10 from a usb from a different PC, completely wiped all my disk and partitions and reinstalled everything and then changed passwords.

Fresh PC has been good so far but recently some of my application windows, mostly firefox but occasionally steam, will flicker for a brief moment, not be closed and reopened, or a new window or cmd line being created, but like only the borders of the window remain while all content inside the borders just turns off for a moment, like when you hover over an application that's behind your active window, it feels like it doesn't happen when i'm actively using windows but sometime after i tab into them but not immediately but idk if im imagining that.

I've run full scans from windows AV, Emsisoft, and ESET and they have all returned negative but i still feel a lil paranoid. I did download a game from a 3rd party source however the source i used seems trusted in that scene with no other mentions of viruses from other users but its still a risk IK. Any tips to further check if i'm compromised besides another full wipe and better internet safety or am i just being a lil schizo?

Bitwarden or Malwarebytes for Family?

Sorry to be back again, but last year I was looking for a new antivirus for my family to use, when we went to cancel Nortons it gave us a fairly steep discount to stay for another year. So trying to save some money we took it at the time. I know a lot can change within a year so I am here to ask again which two of these antivirus' paid versions would be best for us?

We have 3 computers in use and if my father ever gets his laptop out there will be at least 4. So I need enough to at least cover 4 at once. We are getting very tired of all the add-ons, pop ups, etc from Nortons to buy this or that, so we want to move away from it ASAP. We are looking into 1Password for vaults and a family vault set up.

I know I can run Malwarebytes + Windows Defender, would this be enough or would Bitdefender* be the overall best option? I know Bitwarden changed something lately that had people upset, but I did not look fully into it at the time. I think that problem only affected free users? I may be entirely wrong on that!

Any advice would be great! I also am in the US so Kaspersky's is out sadly. I had looked into them a number of years ago as I heard a lot of great things about them just to have it blocked within a few months afterwards.

*Just noticed it was typoed, can't change title though.

Is this a scam or should I seriously be concerned about this? typing this out makes me feel stupid and that it's likely a scam but it came out of nowhere in the middle of my game, before ads normally pop up. it's not asking me to pay for anything but I'm still worried, sorry if this sounds dumb😓

MALWARE REMOVAL Q&A Am I fine or do i need to improvise??

So yesterday I did something admittedly very stupid and tried to get a game without paying then not researching. Got hit with a Trojan 100%

I ran bitdefender to remove it, secured accounts, reset this pc , reset passwords of everything again.

I reset the pc for safety again and now a third time via the cloud. The problem is I have neither a USB or a safe pc as this is my only pc. .

Bitdefender is saying everything is safe, but I know a rootkit could still be in it. My main question is how I can make sure im safe, or if I should just leave it unplugged and fully turned off until I can somehow either get my hands on a safe pc temporarily with a USB, or straight up a new one.

Is the discord official download page compromised?

There's this user in Virustotal that's very suspicious/clearly a bad actor: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/user/zombiebunny

They upvote a lot of malicious files and/or leave comments on them saying they're absolutely harmless.

Read this comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/it/comments/16o1jf4/comment/ka3zncr/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

And there's also the fact that this isn't just a new account or anything, it's an account that's 11 years old.

Based on this, it's safe to assume that anything they upvote is a virus.

Now, yesterday I was trying to install discord. While it was installing, I uploaded the installer to virustotal, and found out that this user upvoted the file: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/eda6c85b1b6e56507eb5a4cfb38310c20903b7893c435f6fbd869406bda663ab/detection

It also seems like the file is very new, the first submission was just 5 days ago. Should I be worried since I already ran the installer?? I already ran a scan with Malwarebytes and it didn't find anything (also tried to run a Windows Defender offline scan but it didn't want to run, even though the Windows RE is enabled...)

What's the best Antivirus for Windows in 2026?

I’m researching antivirus options for Windows and would like to understand how Microsoft Defender compares with third-party antivirus software.

For those who have used both, what differences have you noticed in protection, performance, and ease of use?

PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION What should you check before choosing an antivirus that includes a VPN?

Some antivirus subscriptions include a VPN, while others offer it as a separate add-on. This is for a research project only; I'm looking at how those bundles compare with choosing separate tools.

What limitations or features would you check before choosing a bundle?

key logger might have returned after factory reset

A while ago I fell for some obvious repy virus, I was begging to get hacked, never found a renpy r e p a c k yet still pressed setup. got all my passwords on my pc stolen, they'd follow accounts on insta and post scams from discord and twitter, I couldn't detect it with Hitman, kaspersky, malwarebytes, bitefender...

I know for a fact I didn't do anything stupid like that since. now I'm getting emails to my outlook about unusual activity from indonesia again (I'm in uk), they started trying to log in again. I haven't noticed something weird anywhere else. ran a full eset online scan and nothing. this time my twitter, discord and insta haven't been hacked but my outlook password being leaked is making me concerned when I only use that password for secure things and a variation ontop of that.

I have the password saved to my pc from the app and on phone

Surfshark or McAfee?

I just paid for the 24 months One Plan for $2.49 per month billed for 2 full years up front. I had it before but wanted to retry it again. But, question I need answered, if I already have Mcafee in place for messages for blocking and filtering out suspected spam and scam messages from unknown senders, should I stay with Mcafee or switch over to the Surfshark??

"MrBeast" attack

Hi, today I noticed I posted a story on my facebook account (3 screenshots) that I won some money. But that wasn't me at all. I also sent same screenshots to 3 people on messenger.

I still had access to my account. After deleting everything that was posted and sent I reset my passwords.

Any advice what to do to be sure I won't be affected any more? This never happened to me before so I don't kniw what else to do.

They say they have the same thing detected and the top one only showed up after a long scan then I removed it. I just want to be completely sure it’s all gone.
