***MODPOST*** Welcome! Please read before you post.

Please carefully read the information in the sidebar and on our Wiki below:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskLE/wiki/index

If you are a member of Law Enforcement and wish to receive title flair, head to https://leoverify.com/kb/faq.php?id=5 to verify your account. This is a separate service that is not on reddit and is ran by the mod team at r/protectandserve. All members who run the verification server are current, sworn LE and a detailed explanation on how your information is protected is posted on the website.

WARNING: DO NOT SEND PII OVER MODMAIL. Do not send a picture of your creds, badge, whatever to ANYONE using Reddit. Read the instructions on the verification site to see how your information is protected and what is required. Users do not have to verify at this time, however, this may change in the future. So if you don't verify, then you may be SOL when we decide to change it. There are a lot of members who have said they do not trust the process and that's fine. That being said, you may be subject to the verification process IF your post is deemed suspicious enough that a verification of your credentials is required.

As a warning to all users of this forum: the information provided on this subreddit may not be interpreted as legal advice. Verified users with flair titles are actual Law Enforcement Officers and the information provided may be considered "legitimate" for the purposes of general advice and advisement, but in no way should be considered legal advice. Members commenting that do not have flair may be subject to verification if their posts are considered suspicious or misleading. In all cases, whether a member is flaired or not, the advice given may be subject to scrutiny and verification. Do your own research and feel free to post your questions elsewhere to verify that you are receiving the best information. Users who make claims to be law enforcement and offer advice may be subjected to further scrutiny from the mod team, up to and including removal and/or banning from posting on the forum.

Political posts are strictly prohibited. While LE is inherently political in nature, topics about political affiliation, whether or not people will vote for a particular candidate, etc. will be removed and the user banned without warning.

New users attempting to post on the forum will be subject to mod approval before posting. This is to cut down on the trolls and bait posts that we deal with regularly.

Encouraging users to lie, cheat, omit information on their background checks will result in an immediate ban from the forum. Applying for an LE job is a privilege and a test of integrity. Not everyone who applies to become a police officer will get the job, and that is something people will need to come to terms with. Those decisions you make in life have consequences. Own up to them and accept them. And no, users telling other users that they will not make it is not a bad thing, so soapboxing trying to "call out" other users for telling people the reality of their situations will result in your immediate removal. It's a shame I have to put this in a sticky for people to read, but it happens enough that I have to constantly remove people who think this is their platform to air their grievances on particular issues.

As always, feel free to contact the mod team with any issues.

***MODPOST*** Polygraph Posts Will Be Removed. Don't post them here.

Love it, hate it, the voodoo box is here to stay. It probably won't be changing for a while until more comprehensive standards come down the pipeline nationally and agencies transition to them.

This presents a challenge for us here because we end up in a dilemma with the point of this subreddit. While we understand the process can be confusing and people want answers, we have historically experienced a great deal of consternation with this topic and it usually ends with a fight that causes a lot of headaches for the mod team.

Generally speaking, none of us are going to be able to answer specific questions as to the why or how. We weren't there. We don't know what you were subjected to or what the administrator saw when they gave you the "test." So here's some general advice on the topic:

  1. Be consistent with your answers. Everything from your application to the Personal History Questionnaire will be scrutinized. The cumulative information as a whole is assessed by the examiner and background investigator to develop inconsistencies that question an applicants integrity. Small, innocuous things are red flags to an examiner and a BI that they hone in on during the administration of the "test" that is designed to trip you up and cause you to react to the "box."

  2. The machine is NOT a lie detector. It's a device designed to measure reactions within your body that the administrator "interprets" as being an "indicator" of deception, which is highly subjective and is not based on actual defined scientific methodologies.

  3. The point of number two is to give you an idea of what the process is, not to tell you there is a magical "method" to the process. Every process is different and there are (literally) hundreds of ways they can be administered. I have taken more than a dozen of them over my 20+ years in law enforcement and the military and none of them have been the same. I have taken them in a group setting with hundreds of distractions flying around and some that were more akin to a homeopathic group therapy hippie convention than what should have been a professional setting determining your future. That is the reason why these tests are not admissible in court, because the process highly subjective and interpretation depends on a litany of factors far too broad and expansive that there is no process to determine a comprehensive legal standard.

  4. Research on this subject is highly discouraged for a reason. Plenty of information on the polygraph can come to you with a quick Google search, but this in itself can be considered a "flag" that administrators hone in on because of the variety of information available. There are "guides" out there to make people believe they can manipulate the process. There are "guides" out there describing the intense process of training your body to "react" to the machine to skew your results. There are groups dedicated to "stopping" the administration of the polygraph because it's based on junk science and try to sell you a story on what you can do about it. This is nothing new and has been going on for decades. Some agencies have stopped them, some have adopted them. They still exist despite it. The point is that nothing is definitive and there is nothing you think you can do because you read some crap online about it. Just follow the directions and do the best you can.

  5. On the topic of directions, some common things people do before they take the exam are: don't get a good night's sleep (probably because they are nervous about taking it), change their answers, don't eat, drink too much water to make them have to pee, don't relax, hit the gym the night before so your ass is sore and tired, don't read the pre-poly instructions and questionnaire, don't follow directions. Do the opposite of all that.

Hopefully, this gives prospective applicants a window in to this topic. Good luck and don't give up! Just because you got bit by the voodoo box once, doesn't mean you're done. Keep pushing on and try, try again.

So many ask for badge number and name, say they’re going to sue. How many out of 100 threats actually get sued?

What’s your carry gun?

Just fostering discussion. What do you carry at your local agency? Do you love it? Hate it? Are you allowed to mod it yourself, or is there a bunch of red tape around the simplest thing? Let’s hear it!

For all the LEOs out there, how was getting tased? 😂 I know it probably wasn’t exactly a pleasant experience, but is there any way to prepare for it beforehand? And realistically, what are the chances I actually complete my mission of not screaming? 😂

12 year old driver

I live in a rural area of TN. The county road I live on doesn't see much traffic. The road is 4 miles long. If you drove from one end to the other, you might see 2 or 3 cars or you might not see any.

Today, I let my 12 year old drive about a mile of the above mentioned road on our way home. They did great. They have experience driving atv's, side by sides, go cart, golf cart, tractor, and lawn mowers. They have also drove vehicles up and down our 1/2 mile driveway probaly a 100 times.

I am curious though, what would you as L/E do if you happened upon this? Assume no accidents or complaints. Maybe you noticed the young driver, or maybe you saw them swerve. Whatever the reason, you pull us over.

I realize this is of course illegal, but how would you personally handle this? Citation? Jail? Warning? How do you think most LE would handle this? What is likely hood of 12 year-old getting any legal repercussions from this?

What to do if I don’t know my old roommates on personal history statement?

I am currently filling out a personal history statement and they want all my past roommates listed. I honestly do not know the names of any of my roommates from my first apartment let alone have contact with them to get their address or phone number. is it ok to omit this? should I put the names of those I can remember even if I don’t have contact numbers for them?

Edit: This is also a more broad question of what is ok to omit if I genuinely don’t know? Another example is my past coworkers that it asks for, should I leave it blank? Should I list names if i dont have numbers? Should I write something along the lines of “I don’t remember”?

Advice on Hiring Process

• Upvotes

Hi all!

I, 20 yo female, am becoming increasingly more interested in a career in policing. For a long time, I wanted to be a lawyer, but recently I’ve discovered it just isn’t for me. I’m wanting to know if you think I have a solid foundation to potentially get hired and sent to an academy and any advice you have! Also any pros and cons. For reference, I’m near Ottawa, ON and ideally would like to police in or near here. Here are my qualifications:

- Almost done a Bachelor’s degree in law with a concentration in criminal law and social order

- Volunteered within court houses and other law related fields

- Professional administration experience with a government non-profit

Any and all advice is appreciated:) thank you!

How are job changes prior to LE applications viewed?

Hey all, just had a quick question regarding a potential pre-LE career move. I'm in Ontario, Canada.

Currently, I work as an accountant for an international firm. It has really high turnover. I'm approaching a year there soon.

I don't mind the job, however I have a friend wanting me to apply to his firm, and he has spoken nothing but great things about it.

Here's my dilemma, policing in Canada is already incredibly competitive, and I most certainly am not a job hopper, however, if I take this job, I'm concerned I'll appear as a job hopper. But if policing doesn't work out, this new firm sounds like a great place to be long term.

Summary of my work history: almost 9 years of customer service at one job (still working here part time), 1 year internship in accounting, current job of ~11 months or so. I also recently started volunteering at a local sports school!

I'm curious to know your thoughts on this and how bad it would look. Do you have any insight on what you would do in this situation?

Any thoughts help. Thanks for your time.

How to tell my current boss about background?

I work at a run of the mill 9-5 company. I’m in the application process. BI is obviously gonna do employment history. How do I let my boss know?

My boss is pretty chill, I just feel awkward blinding siding them. Especially since during my interview when I was starting I said I wasn’t going to “job-hop”. I wasn’t lying at the time. Long story short, I had a medical issue that closed the door on LE. So I spent a long time coming to terms with that, and pivoted. But, since I’ve started this job, my condition improved, and I applied. So again, I wasn’t lying I was just under different circumstances.

Anyway, how should I have this conversation? “oh hey boss, the police will randomly call you about me. Say good things about me, thanks!”

Academy injury + future ?

Got injured in the academy, blew out my hip and got told to resign by the department that hired me. Is this going to hurt my chances of ever getting back to policing? Mainly does an academy medical injury hurt my future chances?

Why don't suspects just shut the fuck up and ask for a lawyer?

Genuine question. I watch these interrogation videos and can't understand why suspects keep talking, lying, and digging themselves into deeper holes. Why not just shut up, invoke your right to remain silent, and ask for a lawyer? I am certain I could outsmart all of these interrogations just by keeping my mouth shut. Am I missing something, or do people really think they can talk their way out of everything?

Yellow winter gloves

What are all my cold weather brothers and sisters wearing for those long/freezing cold traffic posts? Winter is here in the north and we make most of our money doing off duty traffic assignments. My old no name gloves from the local rip off police store are cooked. Looking for something I can grab online they’ll actually keep the hands warm! Gloves preferred but mittens are OK too. Thanks!

Panel Interview Advice

I have been denied from 3 different city PD agencies so far. Granted they have only been hiring 1-2 cadets per agency, and the agencies are highly sought after. To be honest, I think I keep fumbling the panel interview. I did do the POPAT for one, did well, and got invited for the panel. Then I got cut. For reference I have 2 years of EMT experience in a high call volume/well known violent area and deal with lots of “diverse” individuals if you will. I know this experience has to mean something as I am currently working 911 in a rough area. Any tips or advice when going into the panel interviews? Any recruiters, what are you looking for in a candidate? If it helps, I am a 24F.
