Mod Announcement What's the difference between /r/AskLEO and other notable law enforcement subreddit(s)?

We don't believe in secret rules and bans.

That means that unlike some notable LE subreddits, if you don't see it explicitly forbidden in the rules located in our sidebar -> as well as in our rules page, you won't be banned. That includes but is not limited to:

  • Activity outside of our subreddit

  • Saying you don't like law enforcement (officers)

  • Failing to say you do like law enforcement (officers)

  • Giving off the impression that you might not like law enforcement (officers)

  • Asking questions that are/seem ignorant

One of the consequences of our philosophy is that purely from the mathematics of that line of thinking, we have fewer law enforcement officers willing to answer questions here, and thus fewer people asking questions. As you might expect of any group of human beings, some law enforcement officers and their supporters don't want to leave their echo chambers, where they are protected by heavy-handed moderators from dissent, including uncomfortable topics they don't want to discuss. I imagine their moderators receive tons of "ban this guy please, they obviously hate cops" reports just like we do. The difference is we ignore them.

We believe that there needs to be a public space for open discourse, as that's the best way to face and fix the ills of our society.

We believe that hiding from hard questions makes us all weak - especially the hiders.

So do us all a favor and choose instead to participate in open and transparent subreddits like ours, while keeping in mind that every single person who answers your questions does so for free, simply to help you learn.

I think that about sums it up. Feel free to ask for clarification or explanation about any of the above.

Meta Sorry folks, but the PT/Gym question addict is changing tactics again, so:

I had to do some behind the scenes bizarre tweaks that might catch some good faith questions due to the desperate tactics they're resorting to making me have to write some weird code.

Again, apologies in advance if your question has to sit in limbo for a while; you can thank the misguided or ill person who "totally innocently just wants to ask if our police station has a gym" 500 times.

General How do I get in touch with this guy?

I got pulled over the other day for touching the white line while driving.

The guy had me sit in the front passenger seat with him, and, overall, it took close to 3 hours before I left.

We had a fascinating conversation. He asked me where I was coming from, where I was going, etc. I told him I was coming from a friend's house, and, I was headed home. We somehow ended up talking about what I did at my friend's house and I started asking him questions too, like, how long was he a deputy, whether he gets annoyed when people call him officer instead of deputy, whether he liked his administration, whether he liked to go hands on or use his Taser, whether he ever had to shoot someone, why the other deputies wear class Bs and belts while he's wearing a chest rig, etc. We even talked about what we did after work, the bars we liked to visit, the parties we liked to attend, and what we did for side money. He liked to work construction events, while I liked to go on Craigslist and look for "gig work," which he was very interested in. I told him I did all kinds of gig work, from taking someone's grandma to the dialysis clinic to moving packages around for people to unclogging toilets.

Eventually, in our conversation, another few cars showed up, and they walked a dog around my car a few times, and it sat down at one point, and, I saw several other guys going through my car during my conversation in the passenger seat. The deputy I was chatting with never missed a beat, he said it was routine, and, I'd be on my way shortly. There was even a guy with gold lettering instead of the usual white letting on his chest rig who showed up, and, I asked the deputy who that was. That was apparently his supervisor. I asked the deputy if they called him Big Sarge to his face or only behind his back, and, the deputy just laughed it off.

Eventually, the deputy stopped our conversation and I was left standing roadside with all my stuff in my car on the side of the road and the door panels on top of my trunk.

Anyway, that was probably the first long conversation I've had for years in which someone was actually, genuinely interested in me. I'm wondering a) would there be a way to find this guy's name? I forgot to look at his name badge and remember the name on it, and, b) would it be appropriate to ask him out for a coffee?

Hiring How does NLVPD hiring/application process work?

Any current or prior North Las Vegas PD guys here? Just curious how the hiring process is for out of state laterals.

I Just put an app in October 7th for a Lateral with 5 years on patrol in Denver. I have not heard anything back yet and its been about 4 weeks.

Im guessing they are just busy as no one ever seems to answer phones or return voicemails.

Does anyone know if they check credit background? If I have bad credit will that effect my chances?

And how does the 6 week academy work. Do they run those consistently or just bring you in on your schedule.

General How thoroughly are police vetted for their temperament?

So long story short, my dad (who lives in MD) recently told me he wants to become a police officer. Thing is, he's the single angriest man I know. He was never physically abusive to me, but was still the type to punch walls, etc and was definitely verbally abusive. He also tends to assume the worst of people when he's frustrated with them. I am genuinely worried that he would end up being a danger to someone.

Is there thorough vetting for stuff like this? I'd imagine not because of how pervasive police brutality is, but I thought I'd ask.

General What should I be expecting in life as a pedophile?

I have been fired from multiple jobs, have been in and out of police jails during police reports and investigations, have been to court to defend against charges, and I am being harassed by some people using social media. I have also been assaulted multiple times in the past. There have been numerous police reports filed against me by neighbours and in other communities that lead to me being arrested in public while they carry out investigations..

I had only posted lies about myself back in 2016 as a pedophile due to having an abusive childhood and also suffering long-term brain damage. . I’m just wanting a better understanding what my life will be like moving forward.

I have been watching Chris Hanson’s To Catch A Predator / TruBlu and can honestly say the interests these men share do not align with my interests. I don’t talk like them and I never engage in sexual conversations with anyone online.

General Any LEO’s willing to provide feedback on an app I’ve been building?

Thumbnail apps.apple.com
4 Upvotes

I apologize if this isn’t allowed, I didn’t see a rule specifically against it.

I’ve been working on an app called PatrolAxis for the last several months after getting tired of my Garmin being practically useless on duty. What started as wanting a better GPS for patrol has turned into something a little different.
PatrolAxis is technically a navigation app, but the main purpose is more of a situational awareness assistant for law enforcement and first responders.

The idea is pretty simple. When you’re driving around on patrol, especially in areas you aren’t familiar with, you shouldn’t have to constantly look for street signs, figure out what block you’re in, or try to remember the last cross street you passed. I wanted something that keeps that information readily available without having to mess with a GPS constantly.

Some of the features I’ve been working on include;

-Current street and nearest cross street displayed as you drive, without needing an active navigation route.

-Block numbers so you have a better idea of exactly where you’re at, especially when calling out your location over the radio.

-Direction of travel and posted speed limits displayed in real time.

-Intersection navigation so you can navigate directly to a specific cross street or intersection instead of needing a physical address. Pretty useful when dispatch gives you two intersecting roads rather than an actual address.

-Shift Mates allows you to share your location with your beat partners or other deputies on your shift, making it easier to see where everyone is at without constantly asking over the radio.

-Pursuit history to help keep track of where you’ve traveled during an incident. (Coming in the next big update next week, still testing)

-Apple CarPlay support so the information is visible on your vehicle’s display instead of having to rely on your phone.

-Apple Watch integration for quickly referencing location information outside the vehicle in a foot chase.

-Regular turn-by-turn navigation when you actually need it.

A lot of it is geared toward making information easier to access while driving, particularly during traffic stops, pursuits, emergency responses, or just working an unfamiliar area.

I’m a deputy myself, so most of this has come from things I’ve personally wished I had while working patrol. I’m not trying to reinvent CAD or replace everything we already use.

Just trying to make something that’s genuinely useful to have running in the background throughout a shift.
It’s been a pretty long process of fixing bugs, dealing with Apple, and figuring out what works and what doesn’t. It’s definitely still a work in progress, and I’m sure there’s plenty I’ve overlooked.

I’d really like to hear from other LEOs about what you’d actually find useful in an app like this. Whether it’s a feature you’d want, something that annoys you about your current GPS, or something you think could make patrol a little easier.
If anyone wants to try it out, feel free to shoot me a PM. I can get you a code for a free year in exchange for some feedback.

If you run into bugs or something doesn’t work right, I’d genuinely like to know so I can fix it.

Also; if you have Android message me! I am working on an Android version as well but need several private testers before I can publish it and unfortunately I don’t know anyone with an Android phone.

Appreciate any feedback!

Hiring Should i join ICE?

Seeing the sign on bonus and probably nonstop action, I’m tempted to join ICE. How is the hiring process? Are they still taking people? Who here does it and do you like it?

General Road rage, license plate leading to ID?

I was pulling out of a gas station today and someone trying to squeeze beside me rear ended me. I put the car in park, got out to go look at damage and talk to the driver.

Driver was very threatening. His car was literally still in contact with mine, but he was yelling “I did NOT touch your car, get back in your car and start driving.” Of course he used much more profanity.

I told him “what are you talking about? Your car is still literally making contact with mine, you hit me, our cars could be damaged.” Obviously this didn’t help, he just kept telling me to get back in my car and drive, and when I just stood there and tried to look at any damage to my car he told his friend in the car to “grab the shit” before telling me I better drive away.

I wasn’t going to wait around to see what his friend was getting, and this guy was definitely threatening.

As he drove around me at the light, him and his friend stared me down and yelled some shit at me, and they could probably see that I was filming them. I got the plate of the vehicle.

My car just has a little dent and scratch I can fix myself.

I’m sitting here paranoid because I am not 100% sure that - if they took down MY plate - they could use that to find out who I am, where I live, etc.
Since my car is essentially fine, I’m not going to/wasn’t planning on filing a report or anything because I don’t want these people to know who I am.

Question: if they did take down my plate, could they find out where I live? When I look up their plate on DMV, I just get the make and model. Not sure if there are other ways?

The whole situation was pretty intense, and I have a family to think of. Given how threatening this guy was, I want opinions.

Thoughts?

General Credit card stolen out of wallet- should I file a police report?

I was shopping at Aldi on 10/19 and either someone took my wallet from the basket or it fell out. I couldn’t find it and went up to the front. Someone had turned it in. Yay! I quickly look through and it’s fine. I go home and hours later, around 10:15pm someone makes 2 charges at a gas station and supermarket. I froze it immediately and requested a new card to be sent.

Do I file a police report? I’m sure there’s video of everything. They only stole $50, which AmEx is refunding me. Is it worth it?? I’m young and this has never happened so not sure what to do

General Local to Fed to Local?

Hey everyone, I’ve asked similar questions in the 1811 sub reddit, but has anyone went from local detective to agent back to local detective. I’m just really not loving my job as an agent.

backstory was a local detective doing motor theft, narcotics, street crimes. Became an agent. Spend way to much time behind a desk. almost 3 years in and thinking of heading back to local?

Situation Advice Will job hopping during college disqualify me?

I'm currently a 19 year old college student in the bay area and I am planning on becoming a police officer when I turn 21 after I get my bachelors degree in computer science. I have no criminal history, no drug or alcohol history, clean driving history, and have good credit. My only concern is my employment history. Ever since I graduated high school at 18, I've had 3 jobs: the 1st job was my 1st ever job which was a season position, so I was only employed by the company for 3 months. My 2nd job was at home depot where I was only officially employed for like 1-2 weeks max because I had a family emergency and due to the sudden event I couldn't keep the job that I only had for like a week - I didn't even start the job I was still in the training. And at my latest job I only stayed for 2 months because it conflicted with my college schedule so I had to leave. Will this affect my chances of joining my local agency when I turn 21 even if I hold a part-time job from now until I turn 21? I realized this is bad and I'm currently looking for a customer service role that I can stick with for at least 1-2 years. I was unaware at the time and I don't want it to ruin my chances. Thank you, any advice is appreciated. If it helps I'm applying to San Jose PD.

Situation Advice (37) Stupid question - tipic - Ohio

hello wonderful people. this may be stupid, i understand the no highway thing for the temp permit.
and i understand the driving at night up to a certain age on any temp license….
but by all logic there should be certain provisions or allowances for certain things like if you go to and from a parking lot supervised and practice at night up to… (18-20… just shooting out a number).

and anyone older than let’s say 21, go ahead at night like with car temps except highways.

seems logical to me. yes more likely to have a drunk hit ya but usually near me, around 2-4am is golden hours where traffics practically non existent.

all that being said. what is the LEO point of view? cause i know the laws the law but some things just seem… unusually excessively…. “strange” i guess would be a nice way of putting it… in a common sense kind of way. you know? or am i just stupid?

Hiring Failed my Psych Eval due to 90% VA disability rating?

Hello,

I failed my psych evaluation with my department in the SF Bay Area, CA. They did not provide a reason why. However, I suspect it was due to my VA disability rating of 90%.

I have a 30% rating for Generalized anxiety and Insomnia. The remaining percentages are 10% ratings for things like joint pain, back pain, shoulder strain and similar issues. I am going to start applying with multiple agencies at a time.

- Will I struggle to pass psych eval everywhere at 90% disability rating?

- Moving forward, how should I handle this with other agencies?

- Will I need to get reevaluated by VA and get a 0% disability rating?

- Will other departments see I failed psych evaluation? Will they see why I failed psych?

Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks everyone and take care! FYI: I am 100% physically and mentally capable of serving as a police officer.

General California: which records should I request after a police pursuit collision?

I’m trying to understand the records process after a collision involving a police pursuit. On January 30, 2020, in Vallejo, California, a juvenile driver fleeing Vallejo police hit my car head-on while I was driving under 10 mph. I’m seeking the incident report, dispatch/CAD logs, radio traffic, and any pursuit review, but don’t know which are typically created or held by which unit. Incident number: 20-1397. What records are ordinarily generated after this kind of event, and which agency or unit should a requester start with?

General Getting venison from Game Wardens in Maine?

Is there a way I can get deer that were poached or that someone hit and ran on the road, or any other reason for death (if it's still safe to consume)? My brother has to shoot a deer he found on the road that someone hit. After calling the game warden and telling him it was ok to shoot it, he asked if he could take it home, and after the paperwork and everything, he managed to take it home. he also got a call about another deer he could have that was poached. Is this a thing you can only have happen if you deal with it in person, or can I call the game warden office and ask?

General Badge patches, add badge number or no?

We are looking at getting embroidered patches of our badges made for our jackets and vests. For those of you that have these do you have your badge number on the patch? The cost is significantly higher if we add badge numbers because they have to retool the machine each time to change the badge number, whereas if we get them without badge numbers, it is just reprinting the same design.

Situation Advice Is there really no way to call a Welfare Check without an address?

My friend, who has expressed that they are actively suicidal, has not texted me since September 11th.

I know their name, the town they live, their phone number, I have a picture, their rough age, I have a description of who they live with and where they work but no direct address. They refused to give it to me. I called the non-emergency line for their town and they said they can't do anything without an address because "how will they figure out where to look?" And I am so disappointed. Is there really no way for the police to check if my friend is okay?

Can I do anything to get a welfare check without an address?

General Why are battery on leo or resisting dropped?

Civilian here, but after seeing so many of you get assaulted by suspects then the charges for resisting or battery dropped on a plea or not at all makes me feel like we’re not holding those who are convicted accountable.

I assume it’s to get a plea but I think it’s more complicated, but it seems like the evidence of body cameras easily provides an account of what happens to you.

Honestly watching this happen and see the charges swept off must be frustrating.

Maybe it’s part of the job? But it seems a bit disappointing for it to be dropped and just lets the suspect become emboldened.

General College student with several questions. how is LE as a general career?

I am a current undergrad student in Massachusetts interested in working in law enforcement after school. I had a few questions about potential jobs, major recs, and salary.
-First of all, what often goes under looked in law enforcement jobs, I’ve heard of the big ones as police or SA in local county or FBI/DEA, but what do people often overlook that yall think should be considered. Does anyone regret choosing law enforcement? If so why?
-What majors would you guys recommend in college. I’m currently undecided so I have lots of flexibility here, I’ve heard that criminology/criminal justice majors usually don’t matter that much in getting jobs in federal law enforcement. What majors do you guys think is valuable on an application and just for reliability if this doesn’t work out.
-Is it easy to make a comfortable living in law enforcement? I’m not going to pick a career solely based on salary, however I do want to make a pretty good above average living in whatever I do in life, hopefully easily clearing 6 figures in later years.
-lastly if you guys have any tips on becoming a stronger applicant for a federal LE job, please share
I have been interested in LE for a while now, I have always wanted a job where I can get physical activity/field work, and work with people. Criminal justice has always been a very big interest to me.
