Discussion is ram the only issue when a building pc rn?

• Upvotes

So basically i really want to build a pc, i do have a gaming laptop so i wont rush making the pc right away but one main thing i wanna know is if only ram was made hard to get for building a pc or are other parts hard and expensive to get too. I have no idea how building one works so id like to know abit of how the market is looking rn to at least make something decent, nothing extremely insane.

Build Upgrade Cheaper to max out AM4 platform or buy mid-tier AM5 Microcenter bundle?

Hi all,

My brother's PC is (imo) adequate-ish with managing of settings, but according to him, he wants to upgrade soon for new games like the recently released Modern Warfare 4 and potentially GTA 6 if the rumors of Q1 2027 are to be believed. Either way, I think he'd most benefit from a better CPU and GPU. As far as GPU goes, he will have to find a deal on one at some point, but that can be kicked down the road as a separate purchase.

For CPU, I'm not fully sure which path is best to take from the current specs and prices:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

4x8 Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO SL DDR4-3600 for total 32GB

EVGA RTX 3070 Ti XC3

2TB NVMe + some 500GB-1TB SATA SSDs

EVGA 750GQ Gold

Dual 1080p 165Hz monitors

Basically, I think he could buy a 5800X3D for roughly $300-350 to max out this (surely?) dead platform and get 2-4 more years out of it, or buy the cheapest Microcenter AM5 CPU/Mobo/RAM bundle for $400. The only issue is that that bundle has a 6 core 7500X3D with mATX and 1x16GB DDR5. I'm sure he can offset some costs by selling off his old CPU/Mobo/RAM, which can be used to buy another stick or a whole new 32GB DDR5-6000 kit and selling that one stick.

Is that 7500X3D worth getting as an upgrade over the 5600X and for the future socket upgradability? Will the 3D V-Cache bring his fps up at 1080p enough to run decently? After reselling old parts, he should be better off just having the same core count but with newer architecture + 3D V-Cache and upgrade path rather than maxing out the AM4 socket with a 5800X3D for marginal cost difference of $50-100-ish and no available future upgrades, right?

The GPU will need to be done at some point later regardless of the CPU platform, so we'll decide on a decent AMD GPU later.

Thanks.

Troubleshooting I'm Tech support, Stumped

Naturally, as I think that the majority of us are in this subreddit, I am tech support for all my friends; However, recently I have had my first "unsolved" mystery...

My buddies computer failed to post. So he calls me up and asks me to help him, the first thing I made him do was re-seat the RAM naturally, and then check single sticks. as that seems to be the quickest thing to cause any issue. Then I realized that we were working with a solid white VGA LED. So naturally, we try some Graphics card Debugging, reseating it, unplugging connections from the power supply, and the Graphics Card, plugging them back in etc. Plugging it into a separate PCIe slot.

Also notable is that he has no NVME Storage devices. He only has a 2.5' SATA SSD. I also had no means to a spare Graphics card, Spare PC etc. So I was not able to verify that the Card hadn't died. I also tried the "turn it on, unplug video outs, turn it off, turn it on, turn it off, plug video outputs back in and then turn it on" trick, that didn't do anything. Now I am wondering if it's a BIOS issue. We did reset CMOS by Bridging JBAT1. Didn't work, I am going to flash it, but I obviously can't get it to post.

Finally, after I was at my wits end, he tells me that he had the computer on over night, and then it just turned itself off and now won't post. So now I'm straying towards a potential Power Supply failing issue. This seems most likely, but I don't think he want's to go down a "Fix It" rabbit hole...

We are working with system specs of -

CPU: i7 10700k

RAM: Vengeance 32gb kit (2x16) 3200 cl16

Graphics Card: RTX 3080 Founders edition

MB: MSI MPG z490 Gaming Plus

Power Supply: RM850e (I Don't know what year, but I do know that it's new enough to have those braided style cables)

All In one water cooling, don't know the brand, and case looked like a h7 flow.

Any ideas that could help would be awesome, otherwise I guess I'll tell him to take it to someone :'(.

The only reason this upsets me is because I've never came across a computer issue that I wasn't able to troubleshoot and this would be my first one. I don't want a loss on my record.

Build Upgrade 5700X → 5800X3D or just jump to AM5? (9070 16GB, 1440p + Quest 3)

Got a 5700X and a 9070 16GB. Mostly play at 1440p and do a fair bit of Quest 3 VR.
Is the 5800X3D still worth it as a last AM4 upgrade, or should I just move to AM5 at this point?
Curious what people would do in my situation

Build Complete Built my first ever PC after 15+ years of console gaming and it was one of the most fun/rewarding things I’ve ever done.

I’ve never been enough of a gamer to think about building a PC, but I’ve been getting back into Fortnite after I quit during college in 2019 (playing on a ps5 this time). I noticed the jump from 60 to 120 fps and then started using kbm on console to prep for when I could spend some money on a pc… and man. A locked 240fps on a 240hz monitor looks out of this world.

Got a ryzen 7 7800x3d and a 5060ti with 32gb ddr5, fried a motherboard in the first build attempt (lol) and had to make a windows bootable usb from my Mac (ugh) bc I’ve never had a windows device.. and after all that, I’m left with this beast of a machine (by my standards) that I created.

I just wanna look at it while it runs lol I’m completely obsessed with this thing. I wish I would have done this before but I didn’t have adult money. Probably not the most relevant thing in the world but I just felt like sharing bc nobody else I talk to really cares to hear about my “computer stuff” but this was really an awesome experience. I’m so glad I didn’t buy a prebuild if for nothing else but the learning experience.

Build Upgrade Upgrade or Buy? Help a lost noob

Question: Is my PC upgradeable/ is it worth upgrading or should I plan on buying a newer one?

Context: I have always just gamed on PlayStation. My wife and I have been playing our PS4 for like 8 years, never felt the need to upgrade to a PS5 but we know we will upgrade to something eventually.

A friend gave me his old gaming pc that he was done with so I could get into sim racing. It was a prebuild from Cyberpower that he tinkered with. I have been driving on Assetto Corsa with a single monitor and the PC has done just fine. The only plan I had for my set up was going with triple monitors down the road.

I figure I could get the PC up to snuff and ditch the console. We play on a projector that we would upgrade too. We play a bit of everything but have spent days upon days on games like God of War, Elden Ring, Bloodborne, COD MW3 but also Hollow Knight, Death's Door and whatnot. Definitely don't care about having the most insane graphics. I mainly care about not being able to play a game because my PC can't handle it. I want the PC upgrade to be a longer term investment and not feel lacking in a couple years.

We will watch an occasional movie off of it but other than gaming that's it. I don't edit media, stream, or much of anything outside of very basic laptop usage.

PC Specs:

CPU AMD Ryzen 7 3700x

GPU AMD Radeon RX 5700

SSD Samsung 850 Evo 500gb

SSD #2 Sandisk X300 256bg

Ram 32gb DDR4

Board Asrock B550AM

Power EVGA 600 watt Gold 80 Plus

Cooler Master A71C

Fans 3 Aprevia 120mm

Case Cyberpower H550

OS Windows 11

Monitor Dell S2721DGF

I have read different comparisons of what CPU and GPU would give the most similar performance to a PS5 Pro.

I read stuff about parts being too old to upgrade with the wrong ports and whatnot.

I put all of my components on the different sites but they just told me that my CPU and GPU were well balanced without bottlenecks.

Then my eyes crossed. Like I said, I have always been a spoon fed console boy, PC world is weird.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this!

Build Help Help with my build

So i'm just asking is this a good build, what do you guys think, i usually play CyberPunk 2077, GTA O, and fortnite on low settings for fps basically on the one i have rn getting 120 constant fps is kinda hard it just dips a lot, is this a huge improvement in performance?.

I would appreciate all the feedback (yes i know prices are just all over the place but i do need a PC)

Discussion My PC was easy to build and surprisingly annoying to work on afterward

About a year and a half ago I spent weeks picking parts for my PC. Checked GPU clearance, cooler height, airflow, PSU wattage, basically every compatibility detail I could think of.

Last weekend I decided to add a second NVMe drive.

The free M.2 slot is underneath my graphics card. Fine, remove the GPU. Except the PCIe latch is almost impossible to reach with the CPU cooler installed, and I have to take off the GPU support bracket first.

Eventually got everything out, installed the drive, and put it back together. Then figured I might as well clean the dust filters while I was down there.

Turns out the bottom filter only slides out from the back, which means pulling the entire tower out from under my desk. Naturally, I'd made the cables exactly long enough to reach.

None of this is a disaster. It's just funny that I spent so much time thinking about how the parts would go IN and almost none thinking about how I'd get to them again.

Next time I build, easy access to storage, filters and cables is going on my list alongside airflow and temperatures.

Do you actually consider how easy a build will be to maintain and upgrade, or is that something you only appreciate after living with it?

Build Upgrade What should I upgrade when I’m on an extreme budget?

I bought a prebuilt in 2020 that has served me pretty well. I’ve been playing a lot of deadlock, but I’m averaging 50 fps with semi-frequent stutters. I am wanting to upgrade my PC slowly as I’m on a pretty extreme budget due to health issues that make me unable to work consistently. The specs are:

Motherboard: AsRock A320M
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100
GPU: Radeon RX 570
RAM: 32gb DDR4-3200
1gb hard drive + 250gb SSD

I guess technically my main question is what GPU should I look for. I’m thinking I need to find a cheap (ideally <$200) GPU, but I’m not sure which one would be a decent bump in performance for relatively cheap. I’m also thinking about purchasing a Ryzen 5 5500 from Amazon as it’s around $90.

The only upgrade I made to the pre build was buying the 32gb of RAM in 2021, so I’m wanting to stick with AM4 so I can take advantage of the RAM/avoid having to pay for the exorbitant prices of DDR5. Would it be worth it to upgrade my motherboard as well?

I also have a 75hz monitor and would like to get a better one and use the one I have as a secondary monitor. Not a huge priority as I don’t even get 75fps in deadlock with my current specs, but any suggestions for cheap monitors with a better refresh rate?

Troubleshooting New PC builder, bios qs

Hey all,

First time long time(God I'm old)... so I bit the bullet and built my first PC because my son has been wanting one and ps doesn't seem the route for me going forward. I built it with a Ryzen 7 5800x3d, asus b550 tuf gaming wifi plus 2, asrock challenger 9070(non xt), 32gb ddr4 3200, 2tb ssd, semi modular, and a case from new egg. Main question, benchmark showed me that I got a few issues so I looked into it. Based off what I have, what BIOS settings should I have set.. like when I play a game the AMD GPU tells me to alt r and enable graphics setting but when I do it tells me I have to enable it on bios.

I'm not sure if anyone will know what I'm talking about, I'm just new to PC and have no idea what these things mean. Is there a way to tell me what I should have set(like just by knowing my set up or if someone has the same one) or should I delete this and post with screenshots the things im seeing. My apologies for asking questions with out some screenshot help for what I'm saying but i just finally worked up the courage to ask.

Also, did I f myself by not giving myself an upgradeable route. I did research, alot, but didnt know all the little stuff til after I bought. I saw ram prices and my research said... ddr5 gives you 10% more speed but is double tbe money so I thought staying am4 was smart but now I know that to upgrade I'll need a new cpu, motherboard, and ddr5. But I know I'm good for a few years so I'm not kicking myself too bad

Build Upgrade Dusted off the old PC, need some advice

This was my gaming rig a few years ago and it served me well, but life got busy and I quit using it. I've recently gotten back to PC gaming, and I'm just curious if this system is still decent nowadays? Is it worth keeping and upgrading? Or would I be better off starting fresh?

I was going to attach a pic but it's saying that's not allowed so I'll type it out I guess.

GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super

RAM: 32GB DDR4 @2666 Gskill Trident

CPU: Intel core i5 8400 @ 2.8 ghz

I'm not looking for 4k or anything crazy, just 1080p on triple A games and the occasional shooter.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Build Help RX 9060 XT 16GB vs RX 9070 GRE 12GB for $50 more — can my EVGA 650 BQ handle the GRE?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I recently bought a PowerColor RX 9060 XT 16GB from Micro Center for $499.99, but I’m considering returning it and exchanging it for the PowerColor RX 9070 GRE Reaper 12GB, which is $549.99 at my store.

The GRE is only $50 more, and I’ve seen people say it’s significantly faster. However, I’m unsure whether it’s worth giving up 4GB of VRAM, and I want to make sure my current PSU can handle it before making a decision.

My current PC specs:
- CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X
- GPU: PowerColor RX 9060 XT 16GB
- RAM: 32GB DDR4-3200
- PSU: EVGA 650 BQ 650W 80+ Bronze, semi-modular
- Motherboard: ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming 4
Resolution: 1080p currently, with a possible upgrade to 1440p in the future

The GPU I’m considering:
PowerColor RX 9070 GRE Reaper Triple-Fan 12GB
Micro Center’s listing specifies a recommended 650W PSU and 2 × 8-pin power connectors. My EVGA 650 BQ is rated for 650W, but I’m not sure whether it’s a good idea to run the GRE on it long-term or whether I should upgrade to a 750W PSU.

I mainly play Escape from Tarkov, including demanding maps like Streets, along with other games. I want good overall value and a GPU that will last through a future CPU/platform upgrade.

My questions:
1. Is the RX 9070 GRE worth exchanging my RX 9060 XT for at only $50 more?

  1. Is 12GB of VRAM enough for 1080p and eventually 1440p gaming, or would I benefit from keeping the 16GB card?

  2. Is my EVGA 650 BQ a reasonable PSU for the GRE, assuming it’s in good condition and has the required PCIe connectors?

  3. Would I need to buy a new 750W PSU, or would that be unnecessary spending?

  4. How much of a performance improvement should I realistically expect in games with my Ryzen 5 5600X?

I’m still within Micro Center’s return window, so I’d appreciate advice before making the decision. I’d rather make the right purchase now than regret it later.
Thanks!

Discussion FSR4 using Optiscaler in older games

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm looking into building a secondary pc but a bit on the fence with regards to the GPU. Here in New Zealand the RTX 5070ti is about $2550 whilst the 9070XT is around $1800. A $750 difference is quite big.

As far as i know, in terms of raster they trade blows. My main concern is the upscaler. I know for DLSS i can use the nvidia app to upgrade old games that have atleast DLSS2 to latest. From what i know, for AMD i can upgrade to FSR via driver as well but only if the game has FSR3.1?

For older ganes like RDR that only has FSR2, i heard you can use Optiscaler to inject FSR4. Whats peoples experience with doing it?

Discussion Overwhelmed on what to do as a beginner

• Upvotes

So in the past Ive only really had a shitty 450 euro PC from ebay. After that one died on me I got a hand-me-down from a relative but this one is also coming to its end. Its running on a very shit system with AMD Raden RX 5700 XT and AMD Ryzen 5600x 8 core.

Its been showing me green screens, its been shutting down on its own, the fans go crazy, its glitchy. I thought about buying a new pre built PC but theyre so expensive for mediocre specs. I thought about building my own PC, which ive always wanted to do because it gives me more control over how I choose to build it, I also thought it would save some money but nope, a good GPU nowadays is 800 euros.

I need advice on what I should do. I need to build something for heavy multitasking (shool work), music production which is also CPU heavy from what I know, and gaming with very poorly optimized games.

Im honestly just looking for good spec suggestions that wont break my bank. I want my PC to be around 1400 euro in total, which I know is not much but I think it should suffice. Any tips and guides are welcome too.

Build Help Minor questions

• Upvotes

Hello! First time builder. Im going for an AMD 4 build in a mATX size. After research, im going for a 9060XT 16gb, a B550 mATX, 16 Gb RAM and a Ryzen 5 5600XT. I have a few questions:

1: Does the 30$ ish difference with a 7 5700X worth it, or should i go with the 5600?

2: Partpicker and other calculators say a 650W power supply should be enough. That or a 750W to be safe?

3: Any recomendations for mATX case? Liam lis look pretty, but airflow seems harder to manage in those.

Thanks in advance!

Peripherals extremely weird niche question about optical drive enclosures

• Upvotes

hello, i have an optical drive, the large type that would typically go in an optical drive bay inside a full-size PC. i built my PC years ago in an NZXT case, and ditched the drive bays. however, the current way i use my optical drive is to pop open my computer and just sit the thing on my desk while it's plugged into the motherboard until I'm done using it, then close it back up. this takes me to optical drive enclosures. I was looking around after finding out they existed (I'm dumb and didn't think of their potential existence for years) and I noticed that they seemed wildly expensive for what is basically just a piece of metal. what I didn't understand is that they are USB devices that have a sata power and data port in them so that your internal optical drive becomes a USB device in a box. here's my thing - i DO NOT want this. i have a very specific use case for my optical drive and I'm being told by chatgpt (call me an idiot for consulting it man idk) USB conversion will make it not work. ANYWAY, I was imagining that I could find such a thing as an optical drive enclosure, where there is just a hole for the sata cables in the back, and then I planned to run sata cables through an unused PCIE bracket opening on the back of my computer, so that unless you're staring at the back of my computer, you basically don't notice anything. now, the other reason that I don't already do this and leave it external is 1. there are moving parts and I'm pretty sure that's bad, though i'm not an expert. 2. aside from the front I/O, optical drives are ugly man. one other idea I had is just ordering one and ripping out all the electronics but then I'm playing 50 bucks for a piece of metal, idk

GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Gaming OC 8G Graphics Card, WINDFORCE 3X Cooling System, 8GB 256-bit GDDR6X, GV-N307TGAMING OC-8GD Video Card

I bought in 2022 finale succumbed to dog hair and overuse. So I am looking to replace.

Know very little about pc hardware, that’s why I copied the entire name from amazon as I don’t know what’s relevant.

I would like to not worry about replacing it for a few years and don’t like to think about game requirements.

Would like to stay below $1,000. Obviously cheaper is preferred but would rather spend money if it was worth the investment.

Suggestions?

Build Upgrade Pc upgrading guidance

• Upvotes

Hello! I’m planning on upgrading my pc, I have an Alienware Aurora R11 and only upgraded the Ram before, but I don’t know much about compatibility or what things actually do😅. Originally I was going with just a GeForce RTX 5060ti from RTX 2060 then I saw that it could create a bottleneck with my outdated i9-10900f, so may as well upgrade that too. Went with a 9800X3D and saw I’d need a new motherboard and ram sticks and now I’m here. I guess I want to know if I have it right so far and guidance on what all I’m going to actually need for everything to be compatible.

Full Build Req Updated Pc Build

• Upvotes

Hello, I have a PC build Request. Budget is 2.4M CLP (around 2.5 USD). The final price so far is 2.25M CLP. It is a gaming pc, bought in Chile. No Peripherals are needed.

I'm mainly looking for 2K gaming and hopefully 244Hz. Also, as an important consideration, due to budget concerns I will be getting only 16GB of Ram, and then later on buying a second stick for Dual-Channeling. Would that be a problem? I'll probably hold on with 16GB of Ram for a month or two, so I don't think it'll be too big of an issue.

Besides that, the only other real concern I have for the builld are the dimensions for the case and if the Motherboard is good for the rest of the components. From what I've been reading, the Antec Flux Pro Atx should support my Motherboard, as well as my GPU and CPU, but if you have any recommendations I'll gladly listen.

Let me know what you think of the build :]
