As a reminder, our wiki has a lot of great posts covering many of these topics, although it is quickly getting outdated!

10.18.2026 Update -- Removing posts about voting and celebrating the first day voter turn out was overkill and overcorrecting for something that hasn't been an issue this election cycle.
Posts that were removed have been re-approved and are visible again. We're leaving this thread up for transparency; thank you for your patience while we get this right.
(If there are any removed posts we've missed, please send a modmail for follow-up.)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you to the posters who provided feedback about a stickied politics thread during the primaries. As requested we are setting up another mega-thread ahead of the midterms to keep the conversation manageable and the subreddit clear of duplicate posts.
Please keep all posting about the upcoming election here on this thread. Individual posts about candidates, election issues, local and national politics will be removed and redirected to this thread. Thanks and remember to vote.

Suppose instead of remediating the lead in the parks (which is perpetually delayed due to the underfunded conservative Nc deq) we just surround the problematic areas with rough sawn timber fencing (y'know rustic style) so the soil isn't disturbed and let it rewild. In the non-problematic areas, we could put in new playgrounds and do partial remediation, when we have the funding. This way, we don't spend as much money, we have much less delay, we get more wild forest to support local ecosystems, and we don't have to spend money on mowing grass that people don't really use intensively anyways. Wdyt?

These two cuties are vibing at the Pet Supplies Plus on Hillsborough Rd. At first I thought they weren’t real because they were so still. I asked about them and all the worker knew is that they just arrived. They completely stole my heart but we already have a dog and two cats. Posting here in case someone is looking for a bonded pair!

This is my first time posting here, so I hope this is allowed! Anyone living in Durham back in the 80s & 90s? Can you please help me remember a store that was in South Square Mall? It was after the remodel, and I think it was near an escalator. The store was really bright, black and white checkered floor and loud music. Definitely a clothing store. If you remember please let me know what store this was!

The Durham County Board of Commissioners meeting moved from everyday life to deep policy questions in a big way.
Right up front, the board clerk put out some important updates that hit home for a lot of people: - Early voting details and tools to check wait times. - A free Veterans Day celebration with live music and ceremony. - New Moderna COVID-19 vaccine appointments now available through the county.
From there, the conversation shifted hard into family caregiving. Community leaders laid out how unpaid care for children, older adults, and people living with dementia is quietly powering Durham’s health and economy.
Commissioners: - Opened up about their own caregiving experiences. - Talked openly about grief and burnout. - Publicly committed to joining a new caregiving coalition tied to the Durham Comprehensive Aging Plan. - Highlighted little-known benefits for veterans’ families.
The second half of the video gets into the thing everyone feels but rarely sees explained: property taxes.
You’ll hear: - Why Durham’s 2025 reappraisal pushed real property values past $70 billion. - What it really means for the county to be at "100% of market value". - How high vacancies and falling rents can coexist with rising commercial and multifamily sale prices. - What the appeals process actually looks like—from the tax office, to the Board of Equalization and Review, all the way up to the state’s Property Tax Commission and the courts. - Why appeal deadlines and late data made this one of the trickiest budget seasons in years.
And then there’s the Chesterfield building.
Commissioners responded directly to residents’ viral questions about nearly $1 million tied to that property. The tax team: - Broke down the difference between a release and a refund. - Explained the long-standing 50% historic exemption on the building. - Connected it to a broader, growing concern: state-level rules that now let private developers tap a charitable affordable housing tax break—sending exempted value in Durham from tens of millions to $420 million.
If you’ve wondered: - How to get support as a family caregiver in Durham, - What actually happens when you appeal your tax value, - Or why some downtown properties get big breaks while others don’t…
this meeting lays out more of the story than most people ever see.

Bad drivers are everywhere but especially on S. Miami Blvd. Thank you to whoever was driving the blue toyota highlander this morning. Your 1 minute to spare is apparently more valuable than anyone else’s life. So yes, invest in that dash camera bc if my brakes didn’t brake on time, this would’ve saved me.

Sorry for the last minute notice but we won't be able to meet for crafting tonight - would next Tuesday Nov. 3rd work for anyone! Same time, 7pm, I'll text more later but basically if you saw my last post most of the basic info is in there.

Looking into possibly switching my health insurance during open season. Have had BCBS for years with no issues but when comparing costs I can save $3600 in my premium for the year by going to UHC. Anyone have pro/cons with UHC? How difficult is it getting seen by specialists at either Duke/Durham Regional or UNC ?

New teen drivers in my household so I need to back up my key fobs. I will have the key fobs done at Sam's (Costco vendor won't be back until late December).
Can anyone recommend a shop that can clone my aftermarket remote start fob for an 08' Expedition?

Hi y'all! I'm not a student but am a lifelong learner of languages. Does anyone know of any in person French classes in the Durham area? I saw the Durham Tech classes are online and asynchronous, but I'm looking for something with an instructor so that I can ask questions as I learn.
Additionally, if you have recommendations for other language classes in Durham, please let me know!! Always excited to learn any language. Thanks!!

As the title suggests, I am looking for some recommendations on some good trails to walk.
