Political/Election Posting, Moderation, and You

There's been a lot of complaining (more than the usual large amount) about mods adhering to the "avoid repetitive topics" and "rediquette" rules.

Political and election posts bring out the absolute worst in this sub and some of the posters in it, which is where we see these rules continually skirted if not outright broken.

"Free Speech" does not mean "I can say and post whatever I want without moderation or consequences." Nobody in this subreddit is going to face legal issues or have their lives altered for voicing their opinions. However, as stewards of this online community, moderators may remove comments or posts that they see as being counter to the health of the community as explicated by the community's rules.

Part of why so many people enjoy being subscribed to r/Burlington is that it is a positive, fun, and supportive community -- not just a dumping ground for crime panic, police reports, political demagoguery, insults, and arguing. Mods are dedicated to keeping it that way within reason. If you would prefer that there be a subreddit where these things are the predominant topics, we would suggest the sub that warm bathroom guy came up with. You'll be right at home there.

There has also been a pervasive brigading issue regarding political posting in this sub that's been going on for years -- ever notice how political posts of a certain viewpoint tend to get a fantastically large amount of engagement compared to every other post in this sub?

Mods are trying to keep this sub from becoming like Facebook, where the only content is manipulated outrage and shouting over political wedge issues cooked up by posters who'd rather have Reddit karma than a functional community.

Transparency? Seriously?

This administration stresses transparency and public input on major decisions, EXCEPT when it comes to our new police chief or the location of the overdose prevention center.

Such a double standard.

Honk and Wave demo at 7am in a residential neighborhood?

Is this considered ok? Second Tuesday in a row I’ve been woken at 7am by an hour of honking at my house near the (admittedly busy) Park/Manhattan intersection in the ONE. Of course that’s a busy time and good for forcing people to see your signs, but is this considered ok in a residential neighborhood? I approached two of the demonstrators and one apologized, the other said “well nobody else has complained”.

I’m pretty fucking pissed about it, especially the response. I’m even a supporter of their candidate, but I don’t really see any political cause justifying causing a scene on a residential rd blocks from any shops or public spaces.

Hi friends, I’m editing my first romantasy novel and I’m sniffing around to find reading groups, with the hope of asking some to be beta readers for my novel. I’m sure there are some in town!

Tomorrow night 10/28 at Higher Ground: Tyler Daniel Bean, Jack M. Senff & The Heartland Mission, and Yabai!

For fans of: heavy indie, 4th wave emo, Folk, 242 Main, Willow’s Bagels

After some 350 odd shows around the country and Canada, I pushed pause on music to open Willow’s. An old friend is coming through town on tour with his new project, so I’m getting the band back together and playing a rare show (the 3rd VT show in the last 7 years)!

It’s been a decade (almost to the day) since the last album I released came out, and when Jack wrote about coming through town, the band and I decided it was worth playing another show to celebrate the album. The whole TDB crew has come in for it from Halifax, Pittsburgh, Rochester, Plattsburgh, and around Vermont.

Jack M. Senff is singer/songwriter from Northern Michigan. Most notably a founding member of pioneering screamo acts Merchant Ships and William Bonney, his current music is informed by a love of old folk rock, country, church, 90’s adult alternative, and a youth spent in the living rooms & basements of the late-00s “do it yourself” punk movement.

Yabai! is a sunny, upbeat, punk/emo-influenced indie rock band from Burlington.

Best rideshare app in town

Hi there,
I’m a week post-op and can’t drive. I’d like to schedule drop off and pick up to my PT appointment in advance. I don’t usually use rideshare apps locally and am wondering if folks have opinions about which is best/most reliable?

I saw why people are always getting in accidents between exits 16 and 14 today

So there I was, going 80mph in the left lane (passing people - let me add this fact AGAIN for those of you who just want to fight) just north of exit 16 southbound. Too fast, I know, sue me. But it's important to the story.

Suddenly there is a shitty F150 driven by what I assume is a raging alcoholic DIRECTLY on my ass. Like, directly. Can't see the headlights close. At this point I had subconsciously sped up to almost 85 because I could sense him back there.

Uncomfortable with the speed and the situation I toned it back down to 80, steadily passing the folks in the right lane so that I could merge in front of them and let jackass pass me.

Well that was apparently taking too long. Right near exit 16, on that little bridge over the diverging diamond, fucker passes me ON THE LEFT in the tiny ass non-existent left hand breakdown lane. Two tires solidly in the dirt and two on the rumble strips. He almost nailed the guardrail and in the process of avoiding it and "merging" back onto the highway almost pushed me into the cars to our right.

Absolute fucking clown ass behavior. I'd be lying if I said I didn't wish that he nailed that guardrail head on.

VSP dispatch was like "ehh ok, we'll let someone know" meanwhile I haven't seen a trooper on 89 in like 6mo so I'm sure buddy just kept trying to kill people until he reached his exit.

Anyway what dash cams do you guys have?

In-Person TTRPG Campaign

I’m looking to spin up an in-person Daggerheart Motherboard campaign and am looking for additional players!

A little about the group: there are four of us thus far, all in adulthood and all nerds that love a good story. Allies/LGBTQIA+, and generally just chill people.

A little about the game: Daggerheart is a collaborative fantasy tabletop RPG that blends narrative-driven storytelling, cinematic combat, and character-focused roleplay with a duality-based dice system using Hope and Fear to shape how the story unfolds.

A little about the Campaign: a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting where ancient technology replaces magic (to be discussed), as heroes venture into a dangerous, overgrown wasteland to battle corrupted machines, uncover lost secrets, and bring peace back to The Vale.

A little about you: 21+, interested in TTRPG’s and collaborative storytelling. Either with experience, or beginner to Daggerheart (there are other new players so you wouldn’t be alone either way). Can commit to an ongoing campaign, meeting a couple of times a month.

A little about logistics: Schedule will be determined once all players are committed, we typically meet up in Burlington (hence posting here), but would be open to surrounding areas given the right situation.

Let me know if you are interested or have any questions!

Live Seat Tracker: 0 of 5 seats available.

edit: reduced total party size to 5.
edit: final players pending, seats available updated to 0.

2-Day AfterSchool Game Design Series For 6-8th Graders in Burlington, Tuesdays, November 10th & 17th

Post image
17 Upvotes

Generator just added a Game Design AfterSchool Series for 6-8th graders!

Make It A Game is a two-part series where students will dive deep into game design. We'll explore our favorite games to develop our own theory of fun, and think about why some games make us lose track of time while others make us lose our patience. From there we'll brainstorm, invent, design, and experiment our way to playable prototypes of our own.

We probably won't leave with a polished final product, but that's not the point. This is a fun, messy exploration where we'll learn through careful observation, then apply that learning in creative new ways. If it falls apart, no worries. We'll iterate and try again. After all it's just a game!

What could possibly go wrong with this choice?

He must be very charismatic for them to take a risk on someone who has so many skellies in his closet.

Looking for an electronics/micro-soldering hobbyist for phone data recovery

I have an old Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit that recently crashed due to the internal storage being completely full (100% capacity bottleneck).

After it froze up I tried doing a hard reset and it got stuck in a boot loop. I was able to get it into recovery mode but when I selected "lacking storage booting" I got a "failed to mount/cache" error. When I selected "wipe cache partition" it shut back down. After several days of attempting every fix I could find on the internet all I'm seeing now is a blue screen.

I got a new phone the same day and most things transferred over, except for the most recent photos in my Gallery and all the notes in the 3rd party Notepad Free app. None of that was backed up anywhere, and I'm just heartsick over it. Many of the notes had sentimental value due to the recent loss of my parents and I'm desperate to retrieve them.

Because the phone uses hardware-level encryption linked to the CPU, I can't just pull the chip; the board needs to be temporarily stabilized so the phone can boot to Android and handle the decryption pass. I’m hoping to find a local electronics hobbyist or engineering student who has a micro-soldering setup and experience with board reflowing that might want to take on this challenge. The goal is to temporarily get the board stable enough to boot up one final time, plug into a PC, and pull the raw app database directory (/data/data/) containing the notes files. (At least that's what I've been told to look for!)

If anyone can help or offer suggestions, please reach out.

Roofer needed for small repair

I'm looking for a roofer who's willing to take on a quick job. I have a single-story bungalow in Burlington with a steel roof which has a small leak around one of the vents. The repair is likely just adding some mastic around the vent's rubber boot and I'm hoping to get it done soon (before it's too cold to apply the sealant).

Any recommendations? Thanks.
