Double Island was given away for free.

Not sure if many are aware that Double Island was given away for free, to the gambling conglomerate of Morris group in the recent exchange, with the promise to develop it, intended as tool to woo gamblers, by flying suckers into Cairns on their private jet, ducking accross in their Nautilus helicopters, inflate their egos and extract.

Certainly makes the propaganda less appealing.

Anymore to add?

RE Agents worth reaching out to for southern suburbs

My partner and I are moving to Cairns from Brisbane in January for her work and looking at the southern suburbs as that’s where she will be working + seems to be cheaper.

Time wise I think we’re in an awkward spot where most places are available now or soon but we want to be looking to start renting/paying the rent no earlier then Christmas so I thought reaching out to agents and requesting assistance as the time approaches might be go (asking a lot of agents I know)

Anyone have any agents they rate that are worth getting in touch with? Or anyone been in similar situation.

Thanks!

Flights from Cairns to Japan. When's the best time to book for mid Feb next year?

Flights are around 1300-1500 to fly to Osaka from Cairns currently. Is there a cheaper time to buy return flights? Is there an airline that you prefer? I was thinking about just buying the tickets today but if there's a sale I should wait for let me know!

Helloween

G'day

So I've recently moved into Whiterock and I'm getting ready for Halloween. I picked up a bunch of King Size candy bars to hand out to trick-or-treaters because I wanted to do something nice for the kids in the neighbourhood. I would hand out full-size bars but let's be honest, king size is now the new full-size.

But now I'm second-guessing myself. I'm worried that if I'm handing out full-sized bars, it might make the other houses on the street look bad by comparison. Like, what if families think we're the type to show off or something? I genuinely don't want to come across as trying to one-up anyone or make neighbours feel like they need to spend more.

Is there some kind of standard in Whiterock? Should I stick to fun-size or regular-size instead to keep things more... level? I just moved here and I'm still getting to know how things work in the neighbourhood, so I'd rather not accidentally upset anyone.

Also, is trick-or-treating even big in Whiterock? I want to make sure I'm not overthinking this.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Atherton the dog the bad and the dog friendly

Stupid auto correct! Was meant to say ‘the good, the bad’ not the dog the bad!

Okay, so I am in the process of blowing up my life, and have applied for a few jobs I was looking around Cairns, but accidentally applied for a job in Atherton.
I have a job interview in a couple of days and I guess I should start doing some ‘ research’ as to if this is even a reasonable place to move to!
I have very low expectations, I want to be somewhere warm, definitely dog friendly ie safe swimming spots, I’m not a complete shit hole, that being said I have lived in the northern territory, in one of the worst suburbs of Darwin, and Broome and liked them both, so gauge that as you wish as to my threshold of ‘ shit hole’ .
Help me make up my mind to go through with the interview, or not bother!
Thanks ahead of time!

Cairns/GBR visit times

I have 2 options timing wise to visit Cairns.. either Christmas week or mid February. Option A has more crowds, option B has more rain. How bad of an idea would it be to go in mid-Feb. Is the rain really that bad? Could my whole trip be ruined because of the weather?

HELP-Single mum relocating to Cairns

Single mum relocating to Cairns – looking for rental leads 🌴

Hi everyone! I've been planning a move to Cairns with my kids for over a year. Unfortunately my partner suddenly walked out and it's turned our plans upside down, so now I'm doing it on my own with my children, including our newborn. The kids are already enrolled in school up there, and this move was meant to be a fresh start and purr future. Things are what they were meant to be, but I still want that fresh start and lifestyle, it just looks a little different now. We were suppose to move and live with his mother in Clifton Beach. So Northern Beaches is where I’m comfortable.

I'm looking for a rental in Clifton Beach, Holloways Beach, Trinity Beach, Palm Cove, Smithfield or Redlynch. If you know of anything coming up, or a friendly agent or private landlord, I'd love to hear from you.

I'd also really appreciate tips on:
Getting a rental from interstate in such a tight market
Local support for single parents
Mums' groups, playgroups or community groups to connect with who support relocation due to family violence.
I'll be in Cairns over December and can inspect in person. Thanks so much, any advice or kindness means a lot right now 💛

Planning a trip to Cairns, how bad is pickpocketing really?

Im flying into Cairns next month and I've been reading some horror stories online about pickpockets, especially around the airport and tourist areas. Now I'm genuinely worried about my stuff getting stolen.

A few specific questions because I want to be prepared:

The airport train: I'm planning to take the train from the airport into the city to save money. Is this actually a risky move? How crowded does it get? I've read some posts about people getting their bags stolen on it and I'm trying to figure out if I should just bite the bullet and get a taxi instead. What's the best way to keep your stuff safe on there?

Walking around the city: I'm staying near the Esplanade for a few days. Is it actually unsafe to walk around with a regular backpack or crossbody bag during the day? I'm not planning to carry anything crazy just my phone, some cash, maybe a card, but I'm worried about pickpockets in busy areas. Should I be paranoid or am I overthinking this?

Tourist hotspots: I definitely want to check out the Cairns Night Markets and probably do some reef tours, plus Kuranda. Are these places known for theft? Do locals just not carry wallets or something? I see people with expensive cameras and phones everywhere in photos but I'm not sure if that's just survivor bias or if it's actually fine.

I know every city has dodgy elements but I'd rather be cautious than naive. What's the realistic risk level here? Am I being paranoid or should I actually be concerned?

How dead is Cairns for a uni student?

'm an international student from Canada and got into JCU dentistry. Trying to work out what Cairns is really like to live in, and how dead it is.
How's the nightlife and social scene for students? Is it easy to make friends outside your course? Do you need a car? How bad is the heat and wet season?
Any other internationals here, how did you find settling in? Straight answers appreciated, good and bad.

Best pizza in Cairns city?

Everywhere I have tried is pretty poor. Salt house is mid but at least atmosphere is decent,la pizza (on the esplanade) is ironically shit, Villa Romana is basic and not worth it. I would rather put my balls in a blender then order from domino’s. Haven’t tried rattle and hum because I would imagine it’s no better than the others Ive mentioned. Any suggestions?

Wavelength vs Silverswift tours

Visiting for an anniversary trip in late November and we really want to do an outer reef snorkel tour. I’m having a hard time narrowing down companies/tour service but think it’s between Wavelength and Silverswift/Silversonic. Does anyone have experience with both that could recommend in either direction, or general advice about either service? Thanks!!

Engagement Party venue

My sister is looking for a venue to host around 100 people for her engagement, that doesn't charge per head. Is there anywhere around?

People will be coming from overseas, so she's hoping for somewhere in Cairns rather than Tablelands or Port Douglas.

I am planning to go to Cairns in March

I am Japanese, Im thinking of taking a trip to Cairns with my friend in mid-March. It is my friend's first time going abroad, and I lived in Brisbane for just one month 10 years ago. I have never visited Cairns, so I would like some advice.

- What is the weather like in Cairns in March? Is it very hot?

- Are there places where we can have fun even if we do not plan on spending a lot of money? (Unusual recommendations are welcome too!)

- We definitely want to visit The Aus Armour & Artillery Museum, so are there opening days, events, or anything else we should keep in mind?

Suggestions for day tours north of Cairns?

We're coming up from Newcastle for a few days in Feb. We've already done the reef so we thought we might do something up the coast.

Any suggestions for a tour provider?

Yes, there's probably better times to visit but we're coming to see a band.

Thanks
