Absolute chaos with the storm this afternoon, metros running down George and Roma street, did the underground busways flood or something?

Brisbane has a walkability problem that doesn't show up on Google Maps: shade

• Upvotes

My car was out of action for a few days recently, so I ended up walking around Brisbane a lot more than usual.

And I realised something that probably sounds incredibly obvious to anyone who regularly walks or catches public transport.

The difference between a pleasant 15-minute walk and an absolutely miserable one often has nothing to do with the distance.

It's the trees.

You can walk down one street with these beautiful old trees forming a canopy over the footpath and genuinely enjoy being outside.

Then you turn a corner onto a completely exposed stretch of concrete and suddenly feel like you're being personally punished by the sun.

Same suburb. Same time of day. Completely different experience.

I actually caught myself choosing where to buy lunch based on which route had the most shade, rather than which place was closest.

And it got me thinking about how much we talk about making Brisbane more walkable without always considering whether people actually want to walk those routes in our climate.

A bus stop technically being within walking distance is great. But if getting there involves ten minutes of direct sun and then standing beside a busy road with barely any shelter, that convenience starts looking pretty theoretical.

Obviously we can't magically grow mature trees overnight, and I understand there are issues with underground services, maintenance, and available space.

But it feels like shade should be treated as essential infrastructure in Brisbane, not just something that makes a street look nicer.

The funny thing is that some of our older, leafier streets already demonstrate how much of a difference it makes.

I'm curious whether other people have noticed this.

Are there any particular streets or walking routes around Brisbane that you absolutely love because of the tree cover? Or places that should be an easy walk but feel completely unbearable during the warmer months?

I'd love to hear both, because I'm starting to think the quality of a walking route matters just as much as its length.

I've stopped believing anyone in Brisbane who says something is “only 10km away”

I had to meet a mate on the weekend and he described the place as “really close, it's only about 9km from you.”

That sentence should not be legal in Brisbane.

Nine kilometres can mean twelve minutes.

It can also mean crossing the river, getting funnelled onto one road with everybody else, sitting through six sets of lights, discovering the lane you're in has quietly become a turn-only lane and arriving 38 minutes later wondering how you've apparently travelled to another state.

Meanwhile there are places 20km away that feel closer because you get on one decent road and basically stay there.

I've realised I almost never think about distance here in kilometres anymore.

Someone tells me where they live and my brain immediately starts calculating completely different variables:

Do I have to cross the river?

Which bridge?

Is Gympie Road involved?

Is there one particular intersection that can ruin the entire trip?

Does Google Maps currently say 22 minutes in that suspicious way where you know it could become 41 before you've put your shoes on?

There are suburbs that are geographically close to me that I mentally classify as “far away”, and places much further out that somehow feel easy.

A friend recently moved about 6km closer to my place and somehow became more inconvenient to visit because the route is worse.

That's an impressive city planning achievement.

I'm starting to think Brisbane needs its own unit of distance based entirely on how annoying the journey is.

What's somewhere in Brisbane that looks close on a map but feels absurdly far away in real life?

Is it just me, or are trains not as cold as they used to be?

I swear the A/C in the commuter trains used to be colder… When I moved to Brisbane a few years back I have vivid memories of stepping into what felt like an ice-box for the journey home in the afternoons. Now? Not so much.

Anyone else noticed this?

🌥🌫 Cloud Bloke🌫🌦 Cloud report: After the rain... wet birds & Cirrus clouds. Whispy Cirrus at around 7Km drawn from the W by the 166Km/hr Jetstream & patterned Stratocumulus at 1.2Km on 30Km/hr winds. Isolated light rain still possible from the Stratocumulus but watch out later as storm cells are definitely possible!

Storm cells could form unpredictibly and rapidly with the abundant moisture and updrafts here. Isolated rain the next days also.

Can you help me? Looking for sausage trees

Every Halloween for the past 7 years I've collected the fallen pods from the sausage trees in a nearby park, to paint and decorate as part of our Halloween display.

This year I organised a group to do it.

Only it seems the council has cut the trees back because there are no sausage pods hanging or on the ground this year.

Anyone know any parks with them?

Google only tells me the Botanic gardens and Newstead House - and I can't collect from there.

Edit: thanks everyone who has replied with Jessica Andrews park. Unfortunately that's the park I normally use.

Scared for my car with all the stormy weather

• Upvotes

I unfortunately park on the street. With all the stormy weather I bought a hail cover. But I don't know how bad the weather warning should be to use it, since it's away from the car at work hours.

I'm new to Brisbane and this is slightly stressing me out. The other day there was a cancelled severe thunderstorm warning. I do have comprehensive insurance but of course don't want to use it unless I have to.

If you have experience with this and have the same fears, pls share.

Any advice is appreciated.

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me work out where I got this perfume from. I purchased it at the Southbank Easter markets during the April school holidays, but I've lost the card for the store. Does anyone know what it is/if they have an online store?

Driving test at Caboolture — any tips or advice?

Hey everyone!
I’ve got my practical driving test coming up on November 2nd at the Caboolture testing centre, and I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks they’d be willing to share!
I’ve been getting plenty of practice in, but I’m still a little nervous and want to make sure I’m as prepared as possible.
I’d especially love to hear from anyone who’s done their test at Caboolture recently! What manoeuvres were you asked to do? Were there any tricky roads or intersections? Are there any common mistakes I should watch out for?
Any advice or experiences would be massively appreciated! Thank you!!

Venue recommendations for a 40th birthday around the Gabba?

Looking for a private venue to celebrate a 40th birthday with around 20–30 adults and kids. Ideally around Woolloongabba, East Brisbane or Kangaroo Point.

Preferably somewhere with a nice vibe, an indoor/outdoor area or courtyard. Must allow BYO food and drinks.

Budget up to $1,000 for venue hire.

Not looking for a typical function hall. Any hidden gems or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I just moved to Brissy from Bundy, anything I should know before I throw myself into the public area?

(Edit) Thank you everyone for everything, but this is all too much, I'm moving back in with my folks as this was a mistake to commit too, but even for the short time I was here it's a lovely place but it's all too much for me,

Good plane watching spots

I am not an autistic kid with a special interest in planes, I am adult WOMAN who is not autistic with a special interest in planes. What’s a nice spot to watch them? Willing to drive anywhere within reasonable distance of the CBD.
