MOD USER FLAIRS

Dear members of r/Cameroon,

It would be advisable to use flairs next to your username so your posts and comments have a bit of context, whether that's your region, background, or perspective. It helps others understand where you're coming from and keeps discussions clearer.

You can select your flair by going to community options on the subreddit's main page. It's on the right-hand side. It gives you the option of picking flairs from Cameroon's regions or flairs which are more representative to you if you don't live in Cameroon.

You can also edit/customize your flair to any fancy stuff you want. If you still don't know how to select/edit your flair, message the mod team with what you want as your flair and we'll do it for you.

This article is helpful to learn how to assign your own user flair. Thanks so much for your continued support and cooperation.

Sincerely, Your moderators ❤️

Discutons-en / Let's Discuss What's the real state of the job market right now, and which fields actually have upside?

Hey everyone,

So my nephew came over this weekend. He just finished Form 5 last academic year and is in high school now, so he's starting to think about which path makes sense for him, and he started asking me all these questions about the job market. Naturally, being the "adult with a career", I gave him my best answers: told him tech is solid, mentioned a few fields I thought were safe bets, shared what worked for people I know.

But after he left, I kept turning it over in my head and realized something uncomfortable: most of what I told him is based on my own experience from years ago, plus whatever I half remember from conversations with friends who are, honestly, in a pretty similar bubble to mine. I have no real idea if what I said still holds up given I'm not actively searching in the job market at the moment.

So I figured I'd ask the people who'd actually know better than me.

A few things I'm genuinely curious about:

What does hiring actually look like right now in Douala, Bamenda, Baffousam, Yaoundé, and other cities? Are companies hiring, freezing, or cutting back?

For students like my nephew who are still choosing a major or a career path, which fields seem to have real upside over the next five to ten years? Tech, agribusiness, healthcare, finance, something else entirely?

Are there industries that look good on paper (the ones I'd probably recommend without thinking twice) but are actually oversaturated or hard to break into right now?

I'm not looking for generic "STEM is good" answers, that's basically what I already told him, and that's exactly what's bugging me. I want to hear from people who are actually living this right now: recent graduates, hiring managers, people who switched fields, anyone with a story or a strong opinion that might challenge what I think I know.

If you're a student trying to figure out what to study, or you work in HR and see trends firsthand, or you just have a hot take about which sectors are quietly booming or quietly dying, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks in advance.

Discutons-en / Let's Discuss Civic Sense in Cameroon

We need to come together as a people and work on our civic sense. Our civilization is nothing to write home about, yes, we aren't a particularly rich country and we are a third world nation for a reason, but that's no excuse for the amount of dirt we have in our towns. You can blame everyone for almost everything that happens to us as a people (which I personally disagree with as a mindset, by the way), but you can't blame anyone else for the amount of dirtiness we have in our communities. Yaounde, Douala, Buea, Limbe, Bamenda, Bafoussam, all of them have heaps of dirt on the roads.

Yes, the government and the councils have a part to play, and they are quite frankly doing a horrible job too, but we as people don't even dispose of our dirt properly in the first place.

Let's not even talk about eating groundnuts and throwing all the peels on the road as we eat, or roasted corn, or plums.

Let's not dive into how we dispose of dirt from moving cars, buses and bikes either, tossing wrappers and peels straight out the window like the road is a bin.

This is actually so perplexing because Cameroonians, in their houses, are for the most part clean. Even a lot of poor people whose houses might not always look the best still hold on to personal hygiene as something to stand on. But the moment we step out of our personal spaces, we turn into zombies of some sort, like the mess outside isn't our problem anymore.

I truly believe people underestimate how much a place (city, town, country) being clean plays a huge part in why they choose to live there. Yes, economic viability is at the top for most people, but cleanliness is high, very high, especially in this social media world. Do you know how many people travel abroad and their whole mindset is to take photos to show people their new, clean environments? Yes, I know it's also about infrastructure, but if you have dirty infrastructure, it's not attractive to anyone, no matter how modern it is underneath the grime.

We must consciously try to fix this problem. The older generation is horrible in this aspect, they have a negative civic sense, but we have to educate them anyway. Talk to your mothers, fathers, uncles, aunties, grandmothers, and so on, to do better and be conscious. Educate a fellow passenger when they throw something out the window, something they could just hold or put in their bag and dispose of properly once they reach their destination. It also starts with us: carry a small bag for your own trash when you're out, and don't be afraid to call it out gently when you see someone litter.

PS: if I were president, littering would be a fined offense. Maybe that incentive would flip the current behaviour. I'd also really vote for a Cameroonian candidate who puts this as a priority in their potential policies. It's that important to me.

I think it's getting worse, and our towns are getting dirtier by the day.

Let me know what you think, and what you've done in your own little way to fight this issue.

BIODIVERSITY / BIODIVERSITÉ Looking for Iboga tabernanthe

For our tissue culture company we are looking for someone that can provide us with preferably life plant tissue or fresh seeds from the Iboga tabernanthe plant.

We are aware of the destruction of the habitat of this beautiful species and therefore our goal is to multiply the plant through plant tissue culture. This way the plant doesn't have to get harvested in the wild and nature hopefully can recover a bit.

If you can help us out we would love to get in contact with you. Looking forward to a DM!

TECHNOLOGY A user emailed “Abeg you fix it okay???” about my Pidgin app, so I went back to it

About three years ago I built PidginPal, an English to Pidgin translator, and eventually stopped giving it much attention.

Then someone emailed saying it had never worked for them and asking, “Abeg you fix it okay???” Fair enough. It made me go back and rebuild it.

One part I'm trying to improve is how the app handles context. A translation might be understandable but still sound wrong for the person you're talking to or the situation you're in.

I've added regional options and explanations of wording and tone, but these use AI and can still get things wrong. I'm the developer, so this is a post about my own app. It's on iOS and Android, with free core translation and one new explanation per day, regional options, context, history and favourites are in Pro.

Would you find something like this useful for understanding messages, helping friends or family learn, or something else? I'd like to understand the real use cases rather than assume.

Hello everyone,

I would like to know if any of you, particularly members of the diaspora, invest in African financial markets (shares or bonds), especially through the Central African Stock Exchange (BVMAC - Bourse des Valeurs Mobilières de l’Afrique Centrale).

I am myself an investor and work for a licensed stock brokerage firm (stockbroker) operating in this market.

I would be delighted to exchange views with you on investment opportunities, how the market works, the listed securities, and the prospects they offer.

I am also looking forward to discussing international investments, financial and funding mechanisms, and opportunities for portfolio diversification across African and global markets.

If you already invest or would like to learn more, feel free to send me a private message (inbox).

Looking forward to connecting and exchanging ideas with you.

EDIT: Investment opportunities are not limited to Cameroon; they extend across all six CEMAC member states and include both government securities and private companies
