Shitpost What works for me on open sights

Post image
• Upvotes

While many shooters instinctively choke up close to the rear sight—making the notch appear large and open, which can help with leading moving targets but forces you to juggle multiple alignment variables at once—my preferred style for precision range work is to weld my cheek far back against the steel or brass butt plate. Increasing this eye relief makes the iron sights appear much finer and naturally locks in your rear alignment, eliminating the constant micro-management of the sights themselves. This removes a variable from the equation, allowing you to focus entirely on elevation and driving the center post directly onto the target with maximum repeatability.

Good 0 to 200 yard gun.

it has a flip up sight for 200

1 in 120 twist

62 cal

Barrel diameter .625

Used by the british military for 1800 to the 1840's There was a famous shot by a soldier well 2 shots at a general two shots two kills sources claim 300 others claim 800 within that range

Around 2000 foot pounds of force at the muzzle

Being, I'm pretty confident being. It has a low twist rate. It can be used with lead shot to hunt chickens within reasonable distances

Equipment Talk I don't know this calculator. this can't be right it's saying the flintlock i am getting has more recoil then a 50 bmg lol

Tactacam Reveal Pro 4.0 - worth it for low-light spots and future no-signal use? (Quebec)

I’ve done a fair bit of digging online but can’t quite find clear answers to my specific situation, so I’m hoping someone here has real-world experience.

I’m starting small with just two trail cams, and I’m a “buy once, cry once” kind of guy. With only two cameras, I’d rather not mix different models for different spots. I want one solid camera that does it all. I’m leaning toward the Reveal Pro 4.0 Solar bundle (camera + solar panel + FlexPack R5), but two things are holding me back:

1. Solar in low light
Both spots are in pretty thick brush with limited sunlight.

  • Does the solar panel keep up at all in heavy shade, or does the camera basically just drain the R5?
  • Anyone mounting the panel higher up the tree with the extension cable? Does that make a real difference?
  • Would I be better off skipping solar and going with an R10 (10,000 mAh) instead?

2. Offline use with no cell signal
My current spots both have signal, so I’m good for now. I’m thinking ahead and might add spots in the future with little to no coverage. I’d rather run the same cameras everywhere than buy separate non-cellular cams later for dead zones, which is why I’m looking at cell cams. My plan for any future no-signal spots is to activate the plan and set everything up at home, then deploy in the woods and pull the SD card with a phone card reader.

  • Has anyone actually run a Reveal 4.0 (or 3.0) long-term with zero signal? Does it keep capturing reliably to the SD card?
  • How bad is the battery drain when it keeps trying to send and timing out?
  • Does it save everything to the SD card, or do some photos end up on the internal 8 GB storage?

If the Reveal isn’t the right tool for this, what would you buy instead? I’ve looked at the Spypoint FLEX (free plan + SD backup), but I’m open to any cell cam that handles both online and offline spots well. I just don’t want to buy twice.

Thanks!

Built a waterfowl log app — what's missing for Canadian hunters?

Hey friends,

I’ve been building a waterfowl hunting log for about a year. It came out of a hunt where a buddy was tracking everything by hand and I asked whether an app for it existed — he didn’t know of one. Four years later, here we are.

It’s free, there are no ads, and there never will be. Everything you put in exports to a spreadsheet whenever you want, and you can import an old one if you already keep records.

It was built in the US and it showed. Until today the licence section only understood a federal duck stamp, a state licence and a HIP number — a Canadian filing their documents had one option for all of them: “other.” That’s fixed as of this morning. It now handles the Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit and a provincial licence, and the field beside them asks for a province instead of a state.

One thing I left blank on purpose: the expiry date on the migratory permit. I know it has a fixed season end, I’m not confident what it is, and a wrong date on a document you can be fined for carrying expired is worse than no date at all. So — when does it actually run out? I’d rather be told than guess.

The rest works the same anywhere: species by name and sex, bands, decoy spread, dog work, conditions, photos, and a red screen for the dark hour before shooting light. The species list already covers the birds you’re shooting.

What else reads as obviously American? The weather lookup still pulls from the US National Weather Service, so it does nothing north of the border — that one’s a bigger job. Beyond that I don’t know what I don’t know. Provincial tag structures, species I’m missing, anything that feels wrong.

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.android.duckchase
iPhone (TestFlight beta now; on app store soon): https://duckchase.app

Happy to answer anything in the comments.

Finding Crown Land in Alberta

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on identifying Crown land in Alberta as I get more into hunting. I’ve been doing a lot of research and have joined some friends on hunts this year, and I’m hoping to be as prepared as possible to head out on my own and harvest an animal next season.

I currently use apps like iHunter and OnX, but I’m having trouble clearly identifying Crown land. OnX seems to do a great job in other provinces, such as BC, where it clearly distinguishes public land from private land. In Alberta, however, enabling the private land layer shows so many parcel boundaries that it can be difficult to tell what is actually public versus private.

I find iHunter useful for identifying grazing leases and PLUZ boundaries, but I have the same issue when it comes to clearly identifying general Crown land. I’ve also tried Alberta’s Recreation Access Map, but I find it somewhat difficult to navigate, and the information doesn’t always seem up to date. On top of that, it doesn’t clearly distinguish Crown land in the way I’m hoping for.

I understand that there are areas where it’s fairly obvious you’re on public land, but I’d really like to have a reliable way to verify land ownership and access before heading out, rather than relying on assumptions and potentially ending up somewhere I shouldn’t be.

For those of you who hunt in Alberta, how do you go about identifying and verifying Crown land? Are there any tricks to using iHunter or OnX more effectively, or are there other apps, maps, or resources you’d recommend?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, and good luck to everyone this season!

Small game hunting in Southern Ontario

I hunt mainly in WMU 67 and a little bit in the WMU east/west of it. I've been going for 2 years now and small game outside squires seem almost non-existent. Spoke to a guy yesterday saying he's not seen a grouse on the property I was going to try for over a decade - he was coming back from duck hunting. I have had similar comments about rabbit and grouse from others at other crown land or huntable public land around.

Is the area I'm in really that bad for small game? Should I look at travelling 1-2x a year to go hunt instead?

From what I am understanding I cannot just go onto crown land and hunt red squirrels without being a private land owner?

LOOKIT WHAT I BAGGED Got my first deer with a flintlock!!!

Should I never listen to the neighbor even though I knew better, a flintlocked to get optimum and fast ignition, you need to leave it outside overnight. So it's the same temperature as outside and then swab the barrel before loading it so there's no condensation when you take it from hot to cold. And it will affect your charge. And how it shoots I had to while this deer walked up show me broadside, I had to frantically reload my PAN. five times and i got four flashes in the pan, and the last time I just said f it. I just filled that thing as much as it could be filled with with priming powder and slapped it down and cocked the hammer. And she finally shot after a good delay. Still held it steady, though, on the deer and got a decent shot.

Not every antique firearm is antique by age

All long guns that are matchlock, wheelock flintlock are considered antique firearms the moment they are manufactured doesn't matter if they are manufactured today in 2026

Tag Soup I built a free offline map for Crown land hunting and camping, would like honest feedback

I hunt Crown land and after recently moving, I've had no idea where to find crown land to go hunt.

It’s called Jackpine. It runs in the browser and you can add it to your home screen. Crown land, WMU boundaries, season dates, and a Hunt mode that records your track and gets you back to the truck. You save an area at home and it’s there when you lose service. There’s a campsite finder too, and GPX import and export.

It's free, but there I added a paid option for things that cost me money to run.

But, Ontario is the one I’ve put the most work into. Sask, NB and NS are close. The rest are beta and will have mistakes. It’s a planning tool so still check the regs.

If you try it, tell me what’s wrong with it.

This isn't me shooting but this is how a properly loaded flintlock should shoot no noticeable delay at all see do your research before using any firearm someone's probably figuring out how to get better results than you just winging it

Gun Bans How do you legally purchase black powder without a pal or foc it seems like regulatory oversight do require a pal for propellant for antique firearms

I feel heavily disenfranchised by the new laws 2024 i can own black powder. I can buy the ammo but I can't buy it at the point of sale. I haven't bought in a while it's complete bs by national resources canada

I sent them a request to amend it with a black powder and antique propellant safety certificate

Was able to use the MMF land near turtle mountain and managed to bag this guy.

Saw a nice buck in the morning and was kicking myself for missing that opportunity but came across this guy during our evening hunt.

Came about 100 yard away from me before taking the shot

Newbie Seeking Advice duck hunting is hard

went on my second hunt yesterday, gravely underestimated how good the eyesight of ducks were.

was meant to be mostly a scouting day, found a huge marsh. like 1-2km long.

but every time i popped my head out, the flock of 30-50 ducks would instantly all fly away even 200-300 yards out.

had times i couldve taken a shot but wasnt prepared, had moments where drawing my shotgun scared them outta effective range.

also was not camouflaged at all, found 1 good spot and maybe 2 decent spots with good cover.

My son’s 2026 Alberta elk.

Took my 14 year old son on a week long elk trip with my buddies. We ended up with 2 bulls and a cow but my son got bragging rights on the trip with this big bull. I called him in from around 100 yards and he sealed the deal, keeping his cool under pressure I’m sure he was shaking like a leaf.
