Feedback Needed For those of you who do print media (postcards, gift cards), do customers show interest?
My title is not doing the best work.
Here's why I ask. Postcards are not my business at all. I do candles that are immersed in regional legends.
Over the summer I unveiled something at my fairs, postcards featuring the legends in both art and story. For the sake of privacy, I won't be specific about my business, but let's just imagine for a second that I had a Bigfoot postcard (I don't) and on that postcard was an illustration of Bigfoot and the story of Bigfoot on the card. And I also had a Bigfoot candle. And so now when customers come into my booth I can say, "Hey, get yourself a free Bigfoot postcard with every Bigfoot candle!"
From the very first fair I rolled this out, it went gangbusters. I probably doubled sales. People would buy a candle even if they didn't like the scent, because they emotionally connected with the postcard.
So, it seemed natural that I should make a pack and sell them. But in the time it took me to set aside the time to do that, I realized that out of a dozen fairs and thousands of customers, maybe only 2 or 3 asked if they could buy a set. And so of course I'm now thinking, don't bother.
And, I know you could say that by offering them as a free add-on for a candle, it could devalue them. But there were heaps of times when a customer would say, "Well, I'm buying this one, but my sister in Ohio loves [insert legendary creature]." And I'd say, "Well, then here, take this one for her!" And they'd always respond, "Oh my god, really, these are expensive!"
Clearly the customer perceives their value, but based off the small number of asks, I don't know if it's worth it to offer a pack of them.
What are your thoughts?
