TLDR : If you have a CC charge back, there is a very good chance you will be out the money and the card. Also, eBay seller protections do very little in this instance.
I have commented on scenarios similar to this on this platform in recent weeks. Figured I would lay out my scenario for others, as it may assist or educate. It has definitely given me a lot more to think about when selling.
First thing's first, I am no power seller (over 1500 feedback in 25 years, 100% positive) but I sell cards and other random household items on eBay and have for about 25 years. I dont skimp on shipping, as a matter of fact, I have created a video for others to show them how I package my cards. I spend a lot on packaging, as I buy a lot of cards for my PC and expect people to take the time. Not all do, but many do. At any rate, I ship how I would hope others would for me.
I sell only to fund future pruchases and itys usually stuff that I come by when I buy a collections open a pack or just dont weant anymore. The funds stay in my hobby. I have a day job for real money.
That said, let me tell you my story:
I sold a $300+ card on eBay back in July. It was Graded PSA 10. Like many transactions it started with haggling at around 40% of my BIN, which was between the last two comps $325 & $500....my list was $400. $500 most recent.
First offer from buyer was $175, we ended up settling on $350 (within a few bucks). lots of back and forth and pleading the case, etc....
Red flag right off the bat, when I went to ship, I noticed that the eBay Authenticity gaurantee address was not there and it was just my buyers address. so no eBay Authenticity gaurantee. Per eBay customer service, there was nothing in the item that should have caused this. The system just "didnt catch it". I was inclinded to cancel the whole transaction, but decided that would look bad after the extensive negotiation and decided to ship without it.
I shipped the item as I normally do. Packaged in a bubble mailer between two ding defends and extra foam for support, as I typically do with graded cards.
The card ships and delivers within a few days, no feedback so I assume all is well.
8 days later to the day of delivery, I get a return request as "Item not as described" and pictures from the buyer showing damage (cracks) to the slab and a piercing in the ding defend. With a few terse words regarding my lack of packaging quality that seemed unneccessary.
I asked why they waited 8 days, they said they were on vacation. Long story short, I refused the return. It was past the 3 day return window. Ebay then sided with me for that exact reason. Sports cards have a 3 day return window for a reason.
1 month later, I get a Credit Card charge back notice in my eBay account for the $350. Ebay gave me 2 options, appeal it, or refund the money. I called eBay to see what happened and they explained the charge back is from the CC and I can appeal it. I said, well you already froze my funds, dont they have to send the item back before anything happens. Nope. That is now up to the credit card company. Sometimes they will ask the buyer to send the item back, sometimes not.
I decided to appeal it thinking eBay has rules and protections for this. Customer Service stated they would use the rules to help me appeal it and try to win the appeal on my behalf.
A month goes by with my funds frozen. The appeal comes back rejected. Of course, the Credit Card company is going to side with their client. Ebay immediately removes the funds from my account, and assesses me a $20 appeal fee.
I call customer service again. I ask what happened. They state very matter of factly I can file an appeal to get my fund reimbursed and have the fee waived.
About 3 hours later I get an email stating that my complete funds for the sale would be reimbursed and my fee waived. it had a lot of wording in rregard to seller protections and how they would honor these and valued me.
My fee was waived immediately. Funds for the sale were not reimbursed immediately. After a call back to Customer Service, I was told to be patient and it took time (7 days possibly) for the transaction to clear. Either way, I had it in writing that I would recieve my funds.
I called back twice and got the same run around from the initial custom,er service rep and escalated department. Today I called back again and this time got elevated to a leadership person.
They understood my frustration, they said they see the email where I was told I would receive full funds, but that the email was sent in error and the person was wrong. They stated, " this would be a great training tool and moment".
They then stated, before we go further, I want you to know there is nothing we can do. I asked about return time limits, seller protections, etc... the rep in no uncertain terms stated, once it gets to a CC charge back , there is nothing we can do after the initial appeal and we wont step in and make the seller whole if the bank forces the charge back in the end.
I then asked about the failure of eBay to apply Authenticity Gaurantee, he had no answer for that. Said it should have applied but didnt. I also asked, if it did apply and the seller filed a CC charge back even with the Authenticty Gaurantee, would that have protected me. He said no, they would use the authenticity gaurantee to fight it, but if the bank sides with the buyer, its over, they get their money back.
I then said, all of this verbage on your site about seller protection is just fluff, it really doesnt protect me once a bank files a charge back. If the charge back is forced through, it does nothing. He said to think of it more like an insurance that we will dispute it on your behalf, but no gaurantees. They then said it would be the same if you owned a brick and morter store. He said, there is always a possibility that a buyer will act in unscrupulous ways, you have to look at it as a cost of doing business.
So I am out the card, the money, and honestly any confidence I had in eBay making things right. I will continue to sell lower value stuff on the platform, but high value will go elsewhere.
I have to believe there are buyers out there utilizing this strategy to rake in free cards. Just open a new card every so often. File your charge back....move on to the next card and seller.
Anyhow, do with this info what you will. I always supported ebay thinking they took care of sellers. Gotta rethink that from here on out.
