Hello everyone, this is not something I typically do, or have ever had to do but I’m looking for help spreading the word about my sister’s dad’s cancer diagnosis.
Madison is my 10 year old sister. Her dad Tim was brought to the hospital a couple weeks ago due to a seizure. On October 20th, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Small Cell Lung Cancer and will be starting radiation and chemo treatments very soon.
Tim came into my life when I was 13 and has felt like a stepfather to me after my own dad passed away. He grew up in Vermont and worked for as a mechanic for a while. He introduced me to The Rocky Horror Picture Show and one time I convinced him and my mom to drive us to Vermont simply to visit Ben & Jerry’s. Mostly we joke around but we both are able to talk to each other about deeper things when we need to.
Right now, Tim is on disability and my mother is on unemployment. I’m worried that treatments/medications won’t be fully covered by insurance and I cannot let this be a financial burden on top of everything my family is already going through.
Tim and my mom don’t know about this yet, but I set up a GoFundMe to raise money to help cover any out of pocket copays for treatment and medication and transportation to and from the clinic. Once the fundraiser ends, all money raised will be transferred to my mother to handle those costs.
I’m looking into other ways to fundraise money locally trying to get a bake sale set up and see if any businesses would be able to hold a fundraiser night. But right now, I’m also just focused on getting his story out there as far as possible. ​El pasado 29 de septiembre de 2026, mi papá fue sometido a una delicada cirugía a causa de un cáncer de colon. Lamentablemente, el camino de sanación ha sido largo y complejo: lleva ya 28 días internado debido a diversas complicaciones. Han sido cuatro semanas difíciles, de mucha angustia e incertidumbre, pero su fortaleza nos inspira a seguir luchando: apenas el día de ayer, tras 27 días sin poder probar alimento, por fin se le pudo dar de comer un poco de papilla, lo cual nos llena de esperanza y nos demuestra sus enormes ganas de salir adelante.

​Él continúa hospitalizado en el Puerto de Veracruz, lejos de la ciudad donde vivimos. Al ser una persona de la tercera edad y no contar con un empleo, esta estancia tan prolongada nos ha rebasado económicamente. Mi mamá, la señora Martha Cabrera de 67 años, ha estado a su lado incondicionalmente, pero ella también lucha con sus propios desafíos de salud al padecer diabetes y várices. Físicamente le resulta imposible hacer los turnos nocturnos y sostener el ritmo de los cuidados tras casi un mes continuo dentro del hospital, sin poner en riesgo su propio bienestar.

​Es por esto que hemos iniciado esta campaña con el objetivo de recaudar $40,000. Cada peso donado será destinado íntegramente a dos necesidades urgentes:

​Contratar apoyo de enfermería: Necesitamos ayuda de un(a) profesional que pueda hacer los turnos nocturnos en el hospital, asegurando que mi papá reciba la atención adecuada y dándole a mi mamá un respiro vital.

​Hospedaje y viáticos: Cubrir los gastos de una habitación cerca del hospital en el Puerto de Veracruz para que mi mamá tenga un lugar seguro donde descansar durante el tiempo que falte de recuperación.

I never thought I'd find myself in this position. I pay my medical aid premiums every month because I believed that if a medical emergency ever happened, I'd be protected. Instead, a frightening Christmas Eve in intensive care has left me with R41,000 in medical expenses, personal loans, and debt collectors chasing an outstanding hospital bill.

The Medical Emergency

On 24 December, I experienced a serious medical emergency involving cardiac symptoms and was admitted to N1 City Hospital. My condition required treatment in the ICU, where I remained until 26 December. It was a terrifying experience, but I kept telling myself at least I had medical aid.

The Fight with Discovery Health

My admission was initially authorised while I was in the emergency room. After I was admitted, that authorisation was declined. I spent months making calls, following up and disputing the decision. Eventually, the hospital authorisation was approved again, but Discovery Health then confirmed that my specific plan did not cover the expenses. I would not be reimbursed.

The Financial Fallout

My total medical expenses came to approximately R41,000. I've taken out personal loans to cover other medical bills, and I'm still trying to deal with the outstanding N1 City Hospital Netcare account of R27,112.70.

I've been paying R1,000 every month towards this account, doing what I can to take responsibility for the debt. But despite these payments, the account has been handed over to debt collectors because the amount I'm able to pay isn't considered enough. I'm now trying to manage these repayments alongside the loans I took out just to cover the medical bills.

I'm stretched to my limit, and I honestly don't know how much longer I can manage this financial pressure alone.

I'm Asking for Help
