UPDATE: If the rules of this subreddit are continually ignored, we will switch to only approved users (must check a box that you've acknowledged our rules when subscribing in order to post).

Geopolitics is intended for in-depth, meaningful discussion. Please abide by the rules or your account may be banned. Thank you!

1. No Trolling

Keep all discussion civil.

  • Any form of trolling will not be tolerated
  • Do not harass other users or mods
  • No novelty accounts
  • No quarantined sub users

The moderators can ban any troll without providing a warning.

The moderators have the final say on whether or not a user broke the sub's rules.

The sub's rules act as a warning.

2. No Submission Statement

All posts need a short submission statement of 3-5 sentences in the form of a comment.

You can read how to create a submission statement here.

3. Do not editorialize article titles

Use the article's exact title as the submission title.

Do not editorialize the title or add your own commentary to the article title.

Content from news organizations about a major developing news story would not fall under this rule if the site continuously updates the title throughout the day.

4. Bigotry

Bigotry and hate speech directed towards groups of people based on race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, religion, national origin, immigration status, social status, religious affiliation or disability is not allowed

5. Genocide denial/Downplaying genocide

Comments denying genocide or downplaying genocide will be removed, and possibly lead to a ban. These include historic and modern-day genocides.

A few examples: The Holocaust, the Holodomor and Uyghur genocide

The moderators have the final say on which comments are removed.

6. Uncivil discussion

All discussion must be civil.

Engage with common decency towards others and treat others with courtesy.

Do not use profanity.

7. No chatGPT responses, chatGPT bots or copy/paste bots

8. Blogspam

Blogspamming will result in a ban. Please make sure that you are not submitting a link that merely copies and pastes an article from another source.

9. Conspiracy Theories

This is not a place to discuss conspiracy theories! There are other communities for that.

10. Quality Control

Articles that are not of sufficient length are subject to removal

Ideally, articles should be at least three paragraphs or more long.

  • Articles that only contain one sentence or a form of an alert are subject to removal
  • An article or self-post is subject to removal if the mods consider that the content within it is misleading
  • No meta

Submissions are strongly encouraged to come from reputable and non-paywalled sources.

Articles behind a paywall will be given a "Paywall" link flair.

11. No Domestic Submissions

Submissions should be related to geopolitics. Domestic politics and related content is not permitted.

12. Homework or assignments

This is not the place to discuss homework or school assignments. The topic may be discussed within a different framework, but r/geopolitics is not here to do your "homework" for you.

'My eyes are on you': Netanyahu denies allegations of initiating attack on Iran 'out of fear of losing the election' amid final 24 hours of voting

Israelis entered the final 24 hours of an intense election season on Monday, as reports circulated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may have clashed with the Israeli military over initiating a possible escalation with Iran immediately before the vote.

Tensions flared over reports that Netanyahu and his military chief of staff disagreed over an instruction by the prime minister to carry out an “action” that the army worried could reignite the conflict with Iran. Netanyahu’s office denied the report, first published by Israel’s Channel 12, as “fake news.”

Defense Minister Israel Katz also quickly denied the report.

Israel’s opposition candidates accused Netanyahu of endangering regional stability for his political preservation. Netanyahu’s main rival, former military chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot, warned Netanyahu not to “dare to place your own political interests above the security of the state.” He posted on X, “Netanyahu, my eyes are on you.”

Avigdor Lieberman, head of the hawkish Yisrael Beytenu party which is part of the opposition bloc, sent a letter to Israel’s attorney general demanding a criminal investigation into possible treason by Netanyahu’s “attempts to drag Israel into a war on the eve of elections, including a willingness to sacrifice (Israeli) soldiers out of fear of losing the election.”

The election on Tuesday is the first since the Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which sparked the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and conflicts across the Middle East.

The cardiologist who could become Serbia's next PM. The Student List party defeated the government of Aleksandar Vučić in Sunday's election

As the dust settled on Sunday's historic general election in Serbia that saw Aleksandar Vučić, the prime minister and dominant force in Serbian politics for over a decade, ousted from office along with his Serbian Progressive Party, one big question was left unanswered: who would fill his shoes?

This question remains unanswered on Monday because the election winner, the Student List party, which morphed from a mass-protest movement into a political force potent enough to oust Vučić, did not nominate anyone as its candidate for prime minister.

This decision perhaps reflected its organic bottom-up structure that differentiated the party from the political establishment it accused of nurturing an environment in which corruption flourished.

So far the favorite to become the new prime minister is Ilija Srdanović.

Russia is playing a game not only in Europe, where it continues its brutal aggression against Ukraine. The stakes of the Kremlin's policy in the Middle East are also extremely high, particularly amid the growing tensions and geopolitical shifts across the region. Speaking on World Talks, Anna Borshchevskaya, Senior Fellow at the Washington Institute, explains that Russia can make it significantly harder for the United States to achieve its objectives in the region.
