Discussion HomePod 2 in Stereo sounding way better on OS 27.2

After installing the OS 27.2 updates on my Apple TV 4K and HomePods, I noticed a noticeable improvement in sound quality, particularly in the bass. I suspect this stems from Apple refining the four-HomePod configuration, and the upgrade came for free with that. Is this just my impression, or have others noticed the same?

My HomePod After 27.2 update

• Upvotes

I plugged my iPod mini2 in after having unplugged for a period of time since it started playing randomly in the night, it immediately started playing music randomly again. I then updated it to 27.2 and I was excited because it stopped playing randomly on me. I paired it with my other HomePod mini with my TV 4k. BUT, in the middle of the night, this time instead of playing music, it said your HomePod is about to reset, keep pressing until you hear three beeps-AND I had already turned off touch controls on it. So no good. It did this twice in the night. I’ve since unplugged it and am going to throw it out. Very sad and disappointed. Anyone know of a solution?

Question/Support HomePods 2 as default speakers to Mac: What is the status in Home app?

Hi there,

Question to those who have set HomePod(s) 2 as default speakers to compatible Macs with 27.2:

What is the status of the HomePod pair in the Home app? Does it always show as "Playing" or does it switch from "Playing" to "Paused" or "Stopped" when HomePods aren't actively used?

Thanks!

Tip The best thing about Sound Glow: Apple’s Ambient Sounds!

I bought my HomePod mini pair when it was introduced in late 2020, and I’ve always been a bit sad about the fact that I don’t use them as often as I thought (I prefer listening to music with my AirPods). But the 27.2 update with sound glow has completely transformed their use case for me! One of my main gripes with the HomePods was always that they were too dim and didn’t make use of the wonderful display in dark rooms, but now, that is no longer an issue. Sound glow looks absolutely stunning, and it moves with the beat so nicely.

But the best thing about Sound Glow is how it reacts to Apple’s own Ambient Sounds feature (7 HomePod-exclusive sound loops that can be triggered via Siri). It doesn’t just randomly light up in the right colors, someone has actually programmed special effects that reflect the current sound loop. For example, there will be little orange flashes of light when sparks happen in the fireplace sound, little raindrops hitting the screen in the rain sound, and a stream going from one side to the other in the river/creek sound. Be sure to give it a try, it’s spectacular!

My HomePod HomePod Software 27.2: Stereo Pair Keeps Losing Audio When Dolby Atmos or Lossless Is Enabled. Anyone Else?

Thumbnail

I have two HomePod 2nd generation speakers set up as a stereo pair. Everything worked perfectly on **HomePod Software 27.1**, including Dolby Atmos and Lossless Audio.

However, ever since updating both HomePods to **27.2 (24K122)**, I've been experiencing some really frustrating audio issues.

**Here's what's happening:**

- One HomePod randomly goes silent while the other continues playing normally.
- Sometimes both speakers stop producing sound, even though the Home app says they're playing. The progress bar gets stuck at 0:00.
- Pausing and resuming playback temporarily fixes the issue, but it eventually comes back.
- Siri and AirPlay can both be affected.

**After extensive testing, I discovered something interesting:**

In the Home app → Home Settings → Apple Music:

- ❌ Dolby Atmos ON, Lossless OFF → Audio issues
- ❌ Dolby Atmos OFF, Lossless ON → Audio issues
- ❌ Both ON → Audio issues
- ✅ **Both OFF → Stereo playback appears stable!**

**What I've already tried:**

- Restarting both HomePods multiple times
- Unpairing and recreating the stereo pair
- Factory resetting one HomePod twice
- Restarting my router
- Testing with only my main Wi-Fi access point enabled
- Checking network connectivity with continuous ping tests
- Disabling Sound Glow and song transitions

Nothing has permanently fixed the issue when either high-quality audio option is enabled.

I also received a warning during HomePod setup saying my Wi-Fi network doesn't support peer-to-peer connections, so I can't completely rule out a network compatibility issue.

The strange part is that **everything worked perfectly on 27.1 using the exact same network and speakers.**

I'm starting to suspect a possible regression in 27.2 involving Dolby Atmos, Lossless Audio, or stereo pair synchronization.

Has anyone else experienced this after updating to 27.2? Especially with two HomePod 2nd generation speakers?

Question/Support One or two HomePod mini 2's for a small-ish home office?

My home office is roughly 195 square feet. I have a corner desk and I face the wall where the two corners meet. My monitor is mounted on a swivel arm 6" above the desk.

I have one mini on order but am thinking of getting another one on Friday.

I listen to EDM, classical, and classic rock.

I know the mini cannot compare in bass to the HomePod 2nd gen....but is the bass at least halfway decent?

Edit: Looks like I'm getting a 2nd mini, considering everyone says to get two. When the internet tells me something, I do not question its advice.

Discussion HomePod Mini Sound Glow

PSA: Sound Glow is only compatible with Apple Music. But if you’re lucky enough, it kinda works with Spotify, but that’s very rare. I’ve sometimes encountered the glowing color effect when using Spotify but once I swipe away from the app, the glowing color effect disappears. I’m kinda bummed out that it’s only exclusive to Apple Music

Question/Support Homepod 2 - Spotify playback issues via voice command

Anyone having issues with their Homepod not being able to play Spotify via Siri voice command? I am on latest OS on both my phone and Homepod (27.2) but it seems to give me a response "one sec" and nothing happens. It seemingly connects to Airplay, since if I open the Spotify app, it's already connected to the HomePod, but it just won't play any music. It'll work if I manually select a song and play, but not via Siri.

This is the case as well for Apple Music One.

Question/Support Fixing the stutter

This fixed my stuttering when play from my Mac to the speakers :

  1. Router Settings: Enable IGMP Snooping & Multicast Enhancements

AirPlay relies heavily on Apple's Bonjour/mDNS multicast packets. When updates roll out or multicast traffic spikes, many routers drop packets or throttle them unless specifically configured:

  1. Log into your router’s web administration panel (e.g., via browser or router app).
  2. Look for Wireless or Advanced Settings > Professional / IPTV / LAN.
  3. Locate IGMP Snooping and ensure it is Enabled.
  4. If there is an option for Multicast Rate (OFDM rates) or Enable Multicast Routing, enable it or set the minimum rate above basic legacy speeds (e.g., set to 12 or 24 Mbps so packets aren't sent at a slow crawl).
  5. If Airtime Fairness is an available toggle on your 5 GHz radio, disable it—Airtime Fairness frequently delays time-sensitive multicast packets for low-power smart home nodes.

Discussion New Lock Controls setting in 27.2 on by Default

Last night I updated all of my HomePods (3 Full size and 4 minis) to the 27.2 update. I wanted to explore the new Sound Glow feature so I went into the settings in the Home app to turn on Sound Glow for the HomePods and I noticed that the new Lock Controls setting was on by default on every one of the HomePods after the update. I actually use the touch controls on my HomePods often enough that I want them to always be enabled.

I find it quite an odd choice to turn on the Lock Controls feature by default on the update. Many current HomePod users are not going to know that this was a new feature added in the update (most people probably will get the update via the auto update setting) and will think their HomePods touch controls are broken. This seems like a unforced error on Apple's part by making the new setting on by default.

Was the new Lock Controls setting on by default for everyone else after the update?

Question/Support OG Homepod died while updating to 27.2 - just before I look for a repair place...

It was one of a pair, linked to an AppleTV. Got stuck saying it was 'downloading' (possibly not helped by the network going down for a few seconds).

Removed it from the home, left it unplugged for several hours. Seems completely dead - no lights when pressing the top at all.

Anything I've missed.

I'm in the London, UK so if anyone has any personal recommendations for repair places - much appreciated

Question/Support 1 or 2 HomePod mini or Mac Speaker?

Have a MacBook Pro I use in clamshell model with a third party monitor. Plan on getting a new Mini 2 to serve as the speaker. Do you think 1 is enough or really need 2 to be effective? Thanks.

News Finally! Apple Music is Working with HomePod on PC Again

After my homepod updated about a month ago, I was no longer able to stream Apple Music from my PC. After researching, it appears that it was " a known issue" with the ios. Well, I updated to 27.2 last night and it's working again!

One small (very small) stress removed from my workday...

Discussion HomePod started playing music at 4am.

So early this morning, I’m awoken to the sound of music playing in the living room where I have two HomePods set up as my speakers for my TV. My phone is the only one that’s connected and has the ability to stream music or control the speakers. Apple Music wasn’t on my phone and the tv was off, everyone was sleeping so I couldn’t even blame my kids who I initially thought it was. The volume was lower than what we normally have the sound at, meaning when we turned the TV off the previous night, it was a lot higher in volume. Maybe because of the season it’s freaking me out more than it should, has this happened to anyone before?? Any ideas what could have triggered it?

Question/Support "Updates" have switched from NPR to Fox News?

For the last two days, when I ask Siri "What's my update?" it's giving me the usual answers (weather, appointments) and then sending me to Fox News rather than NPR. Is there a way to fix this?

Discussion tvOS 27.2 Bug: Identical "Home Cinema" / "Home Theater" AirPlay Names Breaking Automation and Room Selection

Issue Description:

Since updating to tvOS 27.2, there is a severe bug affecting how Apple TV + HomePod audio groups broadcast their names over AirPlay. The system continuously fluctuates between regional naming conventions ("Home Cinema" in the UK) and US conventions ("Home Theater").

The critical failure occurs in households with multiple Apple TV home audio setups. The broken supportsHomeTheaterNaming routine fails to inject the custom room metadata into the AirPlay broadcast name. As a result, the unique room names disappear entirely, and every setup on the local network defaults to the exact same generic string (either multiple instances of "Home Cinema" or multiple instances of "Home Theater").

Impact:

User Interface Confusion: It is completely impossible to distinguish which room you are casting to from the AirPlay picker list on iOS, macOS, or tvOS.

Broken Automation & AppleScript: Any custom AppleScript or smart home automation designed to target specific rooms by string parsing fails entirely. Because the names are identical, scripts randomly select the wrong audio group target on execution.

Steps to Reproduce:

Configure two separate Apple TVs in two different rooms with paired HomePods as the default audio output (on tvOS 27.2).

Set system region/language to UK English.

Open the AirPlay picker on any Apple device on the network.

Note that room contexts (e.g., "Living Room", "Bedroom") are missing, replaced by identical, generic "Home Cinema" or "Home Theater" duplicates that constantly cycle names.

Requested Fix:

Apple needs to repair the configuration validation handling for updateGroupName and ensure that the local room prefix always wraps the audio group descriptor, regardless of the underlying localisation terminology.

UPDATE 27/10 : WOW ! 200+ downloads in under 24 hours for a little app I made because the crazy AirPlay delay had been bugging me for years 🥹 Thank you all, and keep the feedback coming, I'm reading everything.

First post ever on Reddit, be kind 👀

The AirPlay delay, anywhere from 0.2s (if you're one of the lucky ones) to 2 seconds depending on your Wi-Fi and environment, has been bugging me for years. Sure, on macOS 27 the delay is smaller but not gone. YouTube can still lag half a second to a second sometimes when browsing a video.

Anyway, I finally got around to develop a tool to fix it. Everything is sent in about 0.1s (and it adapts to your network). It works with one HomePod, a stereo pair, or several playing together. And as I like doing things all the way, I made it available for Windows as well. One click, and you can send your audio to all the HomePods on your network, with almost no delay.

It's free forever, for macOS and Windows. I've only tested it with HomePod minis so far, so I'd love to hear how it goes with a full-size HomePod or others Airplay compatible speakers.

If you wanna try it, it's on unisson.jeremi.red and I'd love to have your feedback and ideas! If you have questions drop them below as well 👌
