Finished my LLPSI inspired Greek reader on the Sayings of the Desert Fathers

Thumbnail lectioecclesiae.com
9 Upvotes

I've just published the first volume of the Sayings of the Desert Fathers in an LLPSI styled edition with notes in the margins that help explain the harder words.

I have to be honest, I was quite surprised with the support I received from the Greek learners. You guys have been awesome and I really appreciate your feedback.

I had to split the Sayings into two editions because the printing cost would've made it too expensive, but this is almost double the size of my Life of Antony.

I've also began adding declensions at the front of paragraphs to help learners. This is experimental, so let me know what you think. Samples can be found on the website.

Appreciate your continuing feedback.

Dionísio, o Trácio (A Natureza do Substantivo):

Apolônio Díscolo (A Função do Artigo):

Tips for memorizing paradigms?

Hey guys! I'm in the midst of working through Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek Grammar, and though I love the learning process, I'm becoming overwhelmed with all of the paradigms I need to memorize, especially because I don't enjoy the process of memorization.

Does anyone have tips for how to create a more interesting memorization process or work through these paradigms a bit quicker? I'm finding it difficult to move on in the textbook because of the required memorization.

Thanks in advance!!

YourGreekBible: a Koine Greek New Testament reader for beginners, now open for testing

I've been building YourGreekBible, a focused reading app for people who've started learning Greek and want to read the New Testament in the original without juggling a lexicon, a parsing guide and an English Bible.

What it does today

  • The full Greek New Testament (SBL Greek New Testament)
  • Tap any word to see its meaning, parsing, dictionary form and root
  • Hold a verse to peek at the English (Berean Standard Bible)
  • An Interlinear view when you want more support
  • Help levels (More · Some · Less) that you can turn down as you grow
  • A short level check at the start, and difficulty markers on books and chapters so you know where to read next
  • Paper, Sepia and Dark themes, adjustable text size, built for phones and tablets
  • No account needed, and it works fully offline. Your progress stays on your device

Free for now

Everything in the Reader is free during testing. Some features will be part of a subscription in the future. I'll share those details later.

Learn is early

There's a Learn section with flashcards for the words you meet while reading. It works, but it's basic for now and will grow.

How to join

Any feedback is welcome: bugs, confusing bits, or features you'd want. Send it to support@taptapstudio.com. Thanks for helping shape it!

Need translation verification please!

Hello! I’m hoping you can help me verify a short phrase in the original Greek New Testament

The phrase is “Behold, I make all things new,” from Revelation 21:5.

I’m looking for someone knowledgeable in Biblical or Koine Greek who can confirm the exact wording, spelling, accents, and grammatical accuracy.

Thank you so much for your time!

A precisão da análise gramatical do grego koiné;

A justificativa lexical das escolhas de tradução;

A qualidade das notas filológicas e de crítica textual;

A coerência do método e possíveis erros de interpretação.

Peço atenção especial a duas partes do documento:

No século I, o termo grego λόγος possuía amplo campo de utilização nos ambientes filosófico, religioso e intelectual do mundo helenístico.

Na cláusula καὶ θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος, o substantivo θεός aparece sem artigo definido, enquanto ὁ λόγος apresenta-se articulado.

Pretendo disponibilizar o documento completo posteriormente.

Does anyone here use greektyping.com for improving their keyboarding skills in koine with diacriticals? I used it quite a while back and it was great. Now I can't get the timer to work. I'm assuming that something in my browser is blocking the script. Anyone able to assist?

Recipe for beer from Fragmenta Alchemica

Post image
14 Upvotes

Too much emphasis may be given to certain texts in Koine, while others remain unexplored. They are thus the most unexpected. Here is a recipe for beer I dug up searching in the extant greek alchemical fragments; we must remember that alchemy encompassed a wide variety of practices in Antiquity, ranging from pharmacology to cooking. It was the transmutation of any form of matter into an other, κατὰ τὸ δόγμα "ἓν τὸ πᾶν". Beer was no exception. Matter was thought as of one substance; and therefore, it could, theoretically, be transformed into any possible form, whenever one had in his possession the correct recipe and its execution, similarly to the correct application of the divine names in theurgy, something that highlights the Egyptian origin of both. Enjoy!

How do I push through being stuck when self-studying Greek?

Hey guys! I've been self-studying Greek with Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek textbook. I've been loving the learning process so far, but since hitting chapter 9ish I've been feeling really stuck, discouraged, and struggling to grasp concepts. I'm on chapter 11 now, but it's taking me ages to work through each chapter and the corresponding exercises.

Does anyone have any tips for getting unstuck? I've been trying to push through for weeks, but I'm still feeling really discouraged.

Managed to publish a Greek reader edition of The Life of Saint Antony in spite of Amazon

Thumbnail lectioecclesiae.com
40 Upvotes

A while ago I started making Latin and Greek readers for myself in the style of Lingua Latina. I'm working toward a career in canon law, and maybe a PhD in theology, and wanted to get more comprehensible input but wanted that input to be related to the Church and the saints.

After making a few, I decided to publish them on Amazon. I didn't realize until after I'd submitted the manuscript was that Amazon's publishing side doesn't really handle Greek. I reached out to support and explained the situation. They said it would be fine as long as I didn't publish an e-book, and that better Greek support is coming eventually.

So I was able to publish Athanasius's Life of Saint Antony in a format inspired by Lingua Latina, where the harder words are explained in the margin. It's meant for anyone who has worked a bit through Athenaze or has studied Koine for about a year. Athanasius wrote in a more literary Koine but it's very readable with the notes.

There's a free sample on the website so you can gauge if it meets your reading level before picking one up.

I have more planned, I've just been a bit swamped getting the Latin editions published. I really want to work on a bilingual Greek/English edition like the Latin ones I did. I have some of them already done, I just need to do the formatting work.

Would love to hear what you think, or what you'd want to read.

Ever tried...

Have you ever tried an arbitrary challenge like learning 50 or 100 or 250 new vocab words in a week?

Did you apply any specific strategy beyond brute force repetition with flash cards, etc.?

How did it go?

Which LXX and formal equivalence translation combos are highly regarded?

Greetings,

I am using the Swete LXX with the Lexham English Septuagint.

I'd like to find some resources to cross reference the translation.

I'm reading Judges and I don't know what to make of some of the translation, I'd like to check how others have translated certain things.

For instance:

Judges 7:16 (LXX Swete)

Judges 7:16 (LES2)

16 And he divided the three hundred men into three ends, and he put horns into the hands of all, as well as empty water-pots and torches in the water-pots.

Offering tutoring in Greek (Attic, Koine, Homeric) and Latin

Hello!

I am a native Greek speaker and a graduate of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Department of Classics. I have also worked in my apprenticeship in Historical and Palaeographical Archive of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece (MIET) as a curator for manuscripts (mainly psalters of the Comnenian era).

I offer online tutoring in Attic Greek, Koine Greek, Homeric Greek and Latin.

Whether you are a complete beginner or already have some knowledge of the language, I can help with grammar, syntax, translation and reading the original texts.

For Koine Greek, I can help with reading the New Testament and Septuagint in the original.

For Attic and Homeric Greek, we can work directly with the classical authors, depending on your level and interests. The same applies to Latin.

I currently have some availability for October and am looking to take on a few more students.

Lessons are normally two hours, and I offer a free 30-minute introductory lesson first, so that we can discuss your level, what you would like to study, and how I can help you.

If you are interested, feel free to send me a message and tell me a little about yourself, your level and what you would like to study.

Thank you!

Found a useful (free) site for printing custom Greek texts (NT/LXX) for reading practice

I came across Paper.bible recently. While the site is specifically for Biblical texts, I thought it might be helpful for anyone here who prefers reading and marking up a physical copy for Koine reading practice. It's completely free to use.

Instead of wrestling with formatting in a word processor, it generates a clean layout that you can print straight away. You can use it to set up side-by-side Greek/English parallel texts to keep the input comprehensible when you get stuck, or just run a straight reader's edition for extensive reading.

Personally, I usually read digitally in Logos so I can do quick word lookups (and Kevilex.com looks like a good web platform for this too, though I've only tested it briefly). But for those looking for an easy way to print out their own physical reading material, I thought I'd pass this along!

Subjective or Objective Genitive of πίστεως Χριστοῦ & related...

How do you prefer to understand the genitive phrase πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ and related phrases in Paul's letters? Some of the writers and teachers I have respected the most (Brian Borgman as a preacher, Moises Silva as a scholar of linguistics and hermeneutics, etc.) have fairly convincingly argued, as I recall, for the traditional objective genitive understanding (faith IN Jesus Christ)--for reasons related to the repeated emphasis on *human believing* in many of the key passages, for reasons related to patristic understanding (many church fathers being native Greek-speakers), etc.

However I still find Romans 3:22 and Galatians 2:16 a bit awkward on the objective genitive reading; a subjective genitive understanding ("the faithfulness of Christ") is tempting.

What do you think?

Also, see you in the NT Greek Keepers Skool community?

John 1:16

What would be your preference in translating the phrase "charin anti charitos" in John 1:16?

Grace upon grace? (Accumulation connotation)

Grace in place of grace?

Grace in exchange for grace?

Grace after grace?

Grace for grace?

Other? Give me your best reasoning!
