Rust Check? Too much rust? Not enough rust? Ask Here!
Hi All,
We are going to try to consolidate the pre purchase or otherwise rust inquires asking if a rig has too much rust and how to approach it as far as shopping for a new to you truck and beyond.
We have a lot of these threads where people are asking the same questions and rather than have each thread die on the vine as far as useful information goes, by having them all right here in one thread, people can use it as a catalog or guide for what to look for and if people are willing to share sold or bought prices for each truck that we are inspecting, we can all use this as a tool to gauge the market and also the wide variety of condition that all generations of Land Cruisers are in at any given point in time.

2005 LX470
What would yall give for this? Interior looks clean except for a tear in the driver’s seat and some steering wheel wear that won’t kill me. Any other major maintenance issues around this mileage?
From the seller: 2005 Lexus LX 470, 252,518 miles. Southern truck. Timing belt done at about 100,000 and 210,000 miles. AHC suspension works as it should. Heat works; A/C needs a charge before summer, then lasts all hot season. Just put new rotors and pads on the front. Michelin LTXs have about 24k miles on them and are in good shape. All the electronics work as they should minus the dvd player and cd player which we’ve never used.
Mods, forgive me if I am supposed to be posting this somewhere else.
EDIT: I know there will be maintenance at this mileage but the main goal of the post is to determine what a reasonable price is.

Pismo Oceano Dunes Oct 23-25 2026 had great weather
Pismo Oceano Dunes are always a good time. Not many places in the United States that you can have sand dunes right on the ocean. So you get the best of the beach vibes with Offroading on the dunes. This outing we had a 40 series, two 60 series, two 70 series style Prados, an 80 series, and a LX470 (100series). Unfortunately, a couple rigs had to leave early, so our group picture at the end was only four of the rigs. Anybody out there been to Oceano dunes?

Uhaul towing a 100 series
Have you ever towed your LX470? Did U-Haul haul it on a auto transport trailer or did you need to get a tow hauler? Thanks in advance.

Anyone use their 200 series as a work truck? Do you use any tool cabinets or drawer systems?

3UR-FE engine swap into LC79 possible?
My 79’s 1GR engine might have gone kaput, I'm now wondering if I should swap the engine for something a little more powerful and my mind goes to the 3UR-FE. What roadblocks am I going to face?
I am not going to do the fitment myself, I'll find a shop that can maybe help me if the engine is gone.
If not the 3UR-FE, what other recommendations can you give me?
Thanks in advance.

100 series won’t turn over - alternator?
My 2000 Land Cruiser has the original alternator per service records. The truck has eaten through batteries for many years, again per those records, and I think the 2010-ish aftermarket head unit and backup camera may be the problem.
Anyway, with the latest dead battery, I was able to jump and start, drive around the block with no issue, then idle for 30 mins last night. This morning I had to jump the truck again (unusual), it would not turn over when jumping (unusual), and it died after driving 100 feet, losing all electrical power.
Is the original alternator, and do I just need to get a flat bed tow to a shop? I’m in central Denver in case one of the mobile guys pops in ;)

Restore my Dads 97 80 series or get a Lexus gx 470
I am debating on whether it’s worth the money or not to restore my Dads 97 80 series or just get a 08/09 gx 470.
The Land Cruiser has been sitting behind his house for about 6-8 years without running. A major reason why I am considering restoring it is because he got a new engine and it doesnt have too many miles. Also he doesn’t know where key is for the 97. It is located in SoCal. I learned to drive in it and have great memories going camping with him in it. And it’s the 40th anniversary edition so makes it even cooler.
Based on my research of restoring an 80 series could cost about $10k-$14k.
Or I could put that money towards a gx470. I feel like the ac would be better in the gx and seat warmers is a huge plus in my eyes as well.
Curious to see more experienced peoples opinions and what they’d do. This would be a daily driver to replace my 3rd gen 4Runner.

2026 LC Wheel Upgade
I’ve had my 2026 LC 250 Premium for about 9 months and I’m looking to upgrade to A/T tires. I’m also open to changing the stock 20” wheels. I don’t want to lift or level because I barely fit in the garage stock and don’t want to sacrifice too much mpg since this will primarily be a daily driver. I want to start hitting some easy to moderate trails. I’m in Central Florida so mostly sand and tree roots as obstacles. I will take occasional trips to North Georgia and NC mountains. This chart shows the options I’ve come up with based on my research. I would really appreciate any thoughts on anything I haven’t considered or mistakes you might see with these assumptions. Thanks!

1997 Toyota LC for sale in Anchorage,AK
Hey everyone, im sadly having to sell my 97 cruiser due to not being able to give it proper TLC it deserves.
Its in rough condition but runs perfectly fine engine wise. Major issue which lead me to having to sell it is the front right passenger knuckle(and steering arm)/ball joint/and possibly axle are damaged and will need replaced. If anyone is interested in giving it the care it needs or just want a parts cruiser let me know!

Rust Advise 100 Series
Hi guys, I’m looking into buying a 100 series from Belgium, the seller send me this videos before the truck went to ice blasting. What do you think? The left rear underside of the body the tow hook looks a bit odd. The car has 310.000 km on the clock and was serviced at a dealership up to 205.000 km. Timing belt was done at 296.000 km (it’s a FTE). Thanks guys!

Building a dedicated garage & parts discovery platform for Land Cruiser owners in harsh climates (GCC/UAE) — what are we missing?
Hey everyone,
If you own an LC (whether it's an indestructible 70/80/100 series or a modern 200/300), you already know the single biggest headache after purchase is finding independent workshops that actually understand Toyota 4x4 quirks instead of blindly throwing parts at them.
We recently revised Sublimes Drive around real ownership pain points in the UAE and Gulf: vetting specialist garages, finding genuine/heavy-duty parts, and connecting owners for honest advice.
Rather than just pitching it, we’d really value blunt, experienced critiques from fellow Land Cruiser owners and overlanders: 🔗 Web / iOS / Android: https://linktr.ee/sublimesdrive?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=reddit_launch&utm_content=LandCruisers
Specific questions for the community: - What is the first thing you look for before trusting a workshop with your LC? - Does our garage filtering make sense, or is it missing critical 4x4 specialties (e.g. diff locks, suspension lifts, AC overhauls)? - What features would make this an indispensable bookmark for your build or daily driver?
Brutal feedback is welcomed.

Which mild AT tire to run for 2019 LX?
I have a 2019 LX and it’s time for new wheels & tires. I’m going w the LC Heritage bronze 18’’ wheels, but not sure which mild AT tire to run and if I should go SL or E-rated. Almost all on-road use w the occasional trip hit the trails at Hidden Falls ORP in Marble Falls, TX. Low road noise would be more important than off-road capability.
The BFG trail-terrain and the Continental terrain contact A/T 2 look like decent options in the 275/65/18 size. Anyone have experience w either of these on their 200 series? Or are there any other mild AT tires you’d recommend? Thanks in advance!

Age old 100 vs 80 series question
I’ve got a pristine 2001 D4D Land Cruiser J95 with centre and rear locker, which I purchased with 80k miles on the clock, now at 100k. I’m looking at potentially selling my campervan and buying either an 80, which I prefer the look of, or a 100 series. Obviously the 100 is heavier duty compared to the j95, but it’s slightly larger inside than the 80. I have three kids and a red setter, and my family comfortably fits inside the 95.
I’m keen to have a go-anywhere, ultra-reliable dedicated camper with some off-roading as well. I’m leaning towards the 80. I’m by no means a mechanic, but have been enjoying working on the j95 and am hoping to do so on the 80/100. I’d use the 95 as a daily still, so that gives me options.
I used to drive an old 1987 Tithonus 110 Land Rover, which was a lot of fun, but awful inside and low on the reliability side. I’ve also considered an old SFA hilux, but interior would be a lot more limited for my use. There’s also the option, I guess, of holding out and saving for a 76 or a grenadier, but I’m still leaning towards that 80. I even built an RC version for my son to play with on our walks (see above!)
I’d love to know people’s opinions, given my continued use of the 95 as a daily.
