Announcement New to Metroid? Start Here!
Welcome to the galaxy, bounty hunters!
With the recent announcement of the next installment of the franchise; Metroid Ravenous (Metroid 6), we are seeing tons of new players discovering the series. If you’re wondering where to start, you’ve come to the right place.
What is Metroid?
The Metroid franchise basically invented the "Metroidvania" genre. It's all about exploration, feeling isolated on a hostile alien world, finding upgrades, and unlocking new paths. You play as Samus, using weapons and gadgets to traverse the map, battle cool bosses, and save the galaxy.
Here is the community consensus on the best ways to dive in.
Want the best 2D introduction? Play Metroid: Zero Mission (Game Boy Advance / Switch Online Expansion Pack).
Want the best 3D introduction? Play Metroid Prime Remastered (Nintendo Switch).
Want to catch up on the story before Metroid Ravenous? Play Metroid Dread (Nintendo Switch).
“I want to play as MANY games as possible before Ravenous, what does the order look like?”
We recommend playing all the 2D games in chronological order, as stated in the “The 2D Side-Scrollers (The Mainline Games)” section.
“I want to play as FEW games as possible before Ravenous; what do I need to play?”
As of right now, you likely don’t need to play anything! The game will possibly start with a brief recap of the story thus far, and the series is pretty easy to pick up any installment and play. However, if you are willing to play ONE game, go with Metroid Dread!
The Two Flavors of Metroid
The series is split into two distinct styles of gameplay. You don't need to play one style to understand the other.
1. The 2D Side-Scrollers (The Mainline Games)
These are the classic, fast-paced action-exploration games. If you want to play the main story in chronological order, here is the path:
- Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA / Switch Online): a modernized remake of the original 1986 NES game. It tells the origin story of Samus Aran and is highly accessible for newcomers. (Recommended Series Starting Point)
- Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS) OR AM2R (PC): Both games are remakes of Metroid II (available on Switch Online). They introduce the story of the Metroids and Samus’s most impactful mission!
- Super Metroid (SNES / Switch Online): The undisputed masterpiece of the 16-bit era. The controls take a moment to adapt to, but its world design, atmosphere, and boss fights are iconic to this day. Considered by many to be the definitive Metroid game.
- Metroid Fusion (GBA / Switch Online): A more linear and story rich game with a distinctive horror vibe. Samus is hunted by a shapeshifting parasite clone of herself.
- Metroid Dread (Switch): The modern Metroid game, with fluid movement, unique abilities, and quick traversal. Set after the events of Fusion and before the upcoming events of Ravenous.
(Note: You can safely skip the original NES Metroid and Game Boy Metroid II unless you wish to experience the classic retro gameplay and atmosphere. The remakes are beginner friendly.)
2. The 3D First-Person Shooters (The Prime Series)
Set between Zero Mission and Metroid II, the Prime series translates the exploration and isolation of the 2D games into a first-person perspective.
- Metroid Prime Remastered (Switch): A visual overhaul of the GameCube classic. It is a masterclass in environmental storytelling. If you prefer immersive, slower-paced scanning and puzzle-solving over fast twitch-combat, start here.
- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (Gamecube): The sequel to Metroid Prime and considered one of the most difficult games in the franchise. It currently requires original hardware, but there is a possibility for a Switch port in the future!
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii): The third installment of the Prime story Features motion control gameplay and multiple planet exploration, as well as NPC’s. It currently requires original hardware, but there is a possibility for a Switch port in the future!
- Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (Switch/Switch 2): The most recent installment of the Prime series and tells the next chapter of Samus’s adventures during this period. Modern graphics and versatile controls.
The Golden Rules for New Players
If you are new to the genre, the games can sometimes feel frustrating. Keep these tips in mind:
- Getting lost is the point. You will hit dead ends. You will forget where to go. This isn't a flaw; it's the core gameplay loop. When you get a new item (like Morph Ball or Missiles), check your map for doors or obstacles you couldn't pass before. Some games do offer subtle hints where to go, so keep an eye out.
- Shoot every wall. Stuck in a room? Bomb the floor. Shoot the ceiling. Run against the walls. Hidden blocks are everywhere.
- Don't use a guide unless you are truly desperate. The immense satisfaction of a Metroid game comes from that "AHA!" moment when you figure out the path forward yourself.
- Use your map markers. In newer games like Dread, use your map pins to mark strange colored doors or blocks you don't have the upgrade for yet.
What is the Metroid timeline?
Here is the unified timeline of all canonical Metroid titles that tells Samus’s story from beginning to the end.
- Metroid (1986) OR Metroid: Zero Mission (2004) -Both games tell the same story with gameplay and graphic differences.
- Metroid Prime
- Metroid Prime Pinball *
- Metroid Prime: Hunters *
- Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
- Metroid Prime Federation Force *
- Metroid II (1991) OR Metroid: Samus Returns (2017) OR Another Metroid 2 Remake (2016) - All three games tell the same story with gameplay and graphic differences.
- Super Metroid
- Metroid: Other M
- Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
- Metroid Fusion
- Metroid Dread
*These games are not as core to the series as the other games, and they do not follow many of the same gameplay conventions, but they are canon to the story
How long do these games take?
Metroid games, especially the older ones, are not very long. It varies from game to game, but expect an average between 5 - 20 hours of gameplay.

Question At the end of Fusion, why does the SA-X mutate into a monster rather than turning into a Core-X?
Every other X-Infected monster up until this point turns into a core upon defeat. Is it ever explained why SA-X is the only one to do this?

Discussion Wait, Metroid 2 is actually really good!?
I'm not gonna lie, the way that people always put Metroid 1 & 2 together, when talking about how they didn't age well and newcomers should better play the remakes, I always assumed they would be similar in that regard.
But after completing M1 for the first time (with a romhack for SNES that removed all the crazy lag and added an ingame map) and now having played M2 through NSO, I feel like Metroid 2 is actually a huge improvement over the first game.
I completely understood what people meant, when they say M1 didn't age well, the vanilla game lags almost all the time. For example as soon as there are too many enemies on screen, which happends constantly.
The lack of a map makes this game a nightmare to navigate, especially because the developers copy and pasted so many rooms over and over again. Which leads to some very strange places, where a layout was copied that originally had hidden blocks, which were hiding items, but after being copied now just have hidden blocks that lead to nothing.
The controls actually felt completely fine in my opinion, considering it was the first game and also on NES. Overall I had a pretty good experience with the romhack and I think I would've had a fine experience with the OG, if the game didn't lag all the time.
Now with M2, I assumed it was gonna have the same flaws as M1, but to my surprise it acutally fixed almost all of the problems, that made M1 so unplayable for me.
I don't remember the game even lagging once, which already made the experience so much better. The screen was smaller but I never felt like it was to close. The enemy design and platforming was obviously specifically made for the small screen size, so it never became an issue for me.
And the craziest one for me: You can actually navigate through the game, without the need of a map. Don't get me wrong, the lack of a map still makes the game a little worse, than it could've been if it had one, but they actually designed the world with unique locations and room layouts, that help you remember what each area is and don't confuse you as much as M1.
The controls also felt a little smoother, which is very nice. On top of that the setting and atmosphere were really good and I love the plot of the game so much. Especially when you think about, how the events of the game tie into future games.
Long story short, if you tried M1 like me and felt discouraged from trying out M2, I honestly really recommend still giving it a try. I had a really great time with the game and it has become one of my favorite Gameboy games.

Article AM2R on Two Screens: The Developer Bringing Metroid's Fan Remake to Android Handhelds
gardinerbryant.comMy article here was written after interviewing PatchDev, the developer behind the AM2R Android Autopatcher. For anyone unfamiliar, AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) PatchDev has been working on bringing AM2R to modern Android devices. His Autopatcher lets you turn your own original AM2R game files into a native Android version, without needing a PC. He's even created a dedicated dual-screen edition for new retro handhelds handhelds like the AYN Thor, Retroid Pocket Duo and Anbernic RG DS, with an interactive map and other game information displayed on the second screen while you play.
What I found interesting was just how much effort he's putting into optimizing the game for lower-end hardware. We talked about the challenges of getting two screens working properly, some surprisingly obscure performance problems he's uncovered, and how he's managed to get AM2R running remarkably well on the modest RG DS without sacrificing too much of the original experience. There's quite a bit of interesting technical stuff in there, alongside the story of how a simple desire to replay Metroid on his phone turned into something much bigger.
It might be kinda niche, but I hope you enjoy it here :)

Discussion What boss should make a return in Ravenous?
In Metroid dread we got a return of Kraid. Is there a boss you would like to see return? I am a big fan of Super Metroid, I would really love to see a boss from that game come back. Crocomire, Phantoon, Spore Spawn, Troizo, Draygon, Botwoon, not Ridley. Please be Crocomire, he did nothing wrong.

Art Tried to draw Samus from memory...
She ended up looking a little stout, that head-to-body ratio is something... But it has it's own charm, reminds me of the artwork for some of the early games or Zero Mission. Wasn't going for one design in particular, moreso an amalgamation of designs for the Varia suit in particular.

Tweet Beware of the EMMI's Samus. Even this broken one can still kill you if you are not careful.
This thing was a pain in the ass to build. it's going to be an even bigger pain in the ass to pose since I forgot to group all the parts properly.

Discussion Thank you mod team for all your hard work behind the scenes!
Hello fellow Metroid fans! I want to make a post to give a shout out to the mod team of this Metroid subreddit. I'm pretty new to this fandom but I have seen that the mod team always act when someone has a bad behavior toward someone else and they know how to make a distinction between someone who disagree politely with someone and just people who want to be mean. And they are very respectful about the artists work, my last post about fan arts of Nora/Samus was deleted because one of the artist I shared the work had previously sent a DM to the mod team asking not to have their work share here. The mod let me know that he loved Nora and the arts and took the time to explain the reasons why the post was deleted. I think it's very great to have a mod team be respectful of artists wishes and to be very fair when it come to moderating a subreddit. So here you go, I made this little picture for them and wanted to write this message.

Question I'm curious why'd they give Samus a mole?
Was it just something the devs decided?
I think it's pretty cool but it's not often characters have things like moles or freckles unless it's specifically for a specific story beat it characacher

Game Help Help me suck less at Dread
I really love the feel and atmosphere of Dread and my excitement at the new Ravenous has re-ignited a fire in me to actually play and beat Dread.
My only problem is I feel like I am hilariously bad at it. I've killed that first damaged EMMI but I'm onto the 2nd EMMI zone now and that that damn guy has destroyed me soooooo many times.
I'm not a person who has a natural gift for video games, I'm much much better at the puzzle/ exploration side than I am at the jumpy-shooty side of the game. So I knew going into this that I was gonna be facing an uphill battle; but boy-howdy was I not expecting to suck this bad.
So any tips? I find that it often takes me a couple attempts to land some jumps correctly, which is usually how the EMMI catches me lol. Though some of that is also caused by the panic that those zones induce....
My aim is also not great, but that's always the case for me and I'm used to having to compensate for that when I play any game that requires some amount of aim.
My hope is that you can impart some wisdom into my that will help me unlock this game for myself. but if the genuine answer is just "get good" you can say that too.
