Interning@NASA Megathread NASA Internships and Educational Opportunities Megathread - July to October 2026

This thread will serve as an FAQ and megathread - any posts regarding NASA Internships and educational opportunities (including Pathways, L'Space, DEVELOP, and all other programs) will be removed and directed here. You may post questions in the comments here and the community will do our best to answer them; however your best bet is to email the NASA internships staff for an official answer. Please do not message u/Aerokicks directly, post all questions in this thread so others can respond and see the answer.

Overall Internship Website: https://intern.nasa.gov/

OSTEM Internship Website: https://stemgateway.nasa.gov/public/s/explore-opportunities

Pathways Internship Program:

When are the application deadlines for Pathways Internships? It is expected that there will be an application cycle for Spring 2027 start dates in early Fall and a cycle for Summer/Fall 2027 start dates later in the new year. Updates will be posted when available. All positions are listed on nasa.gov/careers/pathways and must be applied for on USAjobs.gov

What is the difference between the Pathways program and the OSTEM Internship Program? The Pathways program is a co-op style program, where students typically rotate between school and work, working several rotations before graduation. Upon successful completion, students are eligible (but not guaranteed) a conversion to a full-time employee. The OSTEM Internship Program is a more traditional internship program, where interns are selected for a single semester. Many interns apply and are accepted back for additional internships with the same project or with other projects, but it is not guaranteed.

OSTEM Internship Program:

When is the application deadline for OSTEM internships?

Spring 2027 Application Deadline: September 14, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET)
Summer 2027 Application Deadline: February 26, 2027 (11:59 p.m. ET)
Fall 2027 Application Deadline: May 21, 2027 (11:59 p.m. ET)

When will I be contacted for an interview? Not every position holds interviews. Some mentors have already begun scheduling interviews, while some will wait until applications close. Please be patient.

When will I know if I got a position? Most mentors will wait until after the application deadline to make their final selection. It can take several weeks to receive an offer after the selection is made. If you have been interviewed for a position, you may follow up, but otherwise please be patient.

Will I get an email if I'm not accepted to a position? An effort is made to send rejection notices to all applicants, however it is not guaranteed.

Do I have to enter my references on each application? References are currently not a part of the application process for OSTEM and do not need to be submitted.

When do the internships start? Spring OSTEM internships begin in early to mid January. Summer OSTEM internships will begin in early June. Fall OSTEM internships begin in late August to early September.

Will the internships be virtual or in person? Currently all OSTEM positions are in person only.

Feel free to ask any other questions and we will do our best to answer them or refer you to the NASA internships staff for a better answer.

Question NOAA Fed to NASA Goddard

Morning guys,

I'm a Fed over at NOAA Suitland and recently applied to the Goddard public notices, got confirmation that I was referred yesterday. Since I'm outside NASA, I was wondering if anybody could give me more info.

Are those public notice positions the "insourcing" for contractor to fed positions? Should I even expect to hear from HR at all since I'm not one of the contractors?

If there's still a chance I could get picked up to come over, what exactly are all these positions for? I work satellite ops, are things like that being transferred over?

Thanks in advance

Self Degree Pivot.

Good afternoon everyone! I’m currently studying Nuclear Medicine Technology (NMT). I’m at an impasse right now. It’s my first semester back at community college, and I really love the future prospects for NMT. There seems to be a future market with the degree, the pay is very well, and you get to work with (seemingly) cool technology with patients. I see myself happy with the work, but I think I would want to do more in the future once I get a job in NMT; meaning I would want to go back to school for something.

However! My mind keeps wandering to want to work at NASA. I really like the idea of being a researcher of some sorts, working on spacecrafts, etc. I’m told that there are more careers at NASA than just being an aerospace engineer/mechanical engineer. My heart just really wants the challenge, I suppose.

I also ask this question very early on since I do not want my FAFSA assistance to be wasted. I’m literally taking any advice, as this is my first time asking this out loud to people.

Thank you all! Much love.

Question NASA Transfer from Another Federal Agency

Has anyone recently transferred to NASA from another federal agency?
I’m currently a federal employee and received a a TJO under Direct Hire Authority.
Just wondering what the process looked like for you, how long it took from TJO to FJO, and whether NASA contacted your current agency before issuing the final offer.
Thanks!

Question Odd email from NSSC

UPDATE: I discovered this was a document audit on my military spouse paperwork, which is why it referenced the 4 postings, including the one I have yet to be referred on. Hope this helps someone who may get a similar email down the road.

I received the weirdest email from the NSSC today and was hoping someone might be familiar with this situation. The email thanked me for my inquiry into a job vacancy that I did not inquire about. I applied, but never inquired.

It then went on to tell me that after reviewing my application with USAS my transcript was attached, and it listed my current applications, stating my resume had been referred. These were positions I had applied for and I already know my resume was referred. I did not inquire about these announcements either.

It finished with telling me a selection had not been made etc, etc.

Has this happened to anyone else?

EDIT: For those saying this is the standard reply for applying, that is NOT the case here. I already received the standard application confirmation emails and referred status emails on the announcements. This is a completely different email. Thank you.

Question pentester wanting to get into space security

Hey, so I've got a BSc in software engineering and a good few years of pentesting behind me. Lately I've been going down the rabbit hole of space security, satellites, cubesats, ground stations, all that stuff, and I’d really like to work on it properly.

I want to do a masters part time while keeping my job, but I can't figure out which direction is actually worth it. I'm torn between something like aerospace/space system, electrical engineering or embedded systems.

Would really appreciate any advice you have.

(Crossposting this to a few subs, so sorry if you see it twice)

Thanks!

Question Is there any possibility of a slightly autistic person being able to be an astronaut?

I have a friend who has, his whole life, been determined to be an astronaut. and let me tell you, this guy is incredible. absolute genius, wins basically everything award, is super involved in honor societies and jrotc, the whole 9 yards. but he was recently tested for autism as a just in case thing, and he has it. it’s not severe at all and you wouldnt really be able to tell if you met him. Ive seen mixed opinions on the internet, though this is also the internet but I guess I trust it more than random Facebook posts and google Gemini. this seems relevant: he has absolutely no issues under stress, barely any sensory issues, communicates really well cuz his vocabulary is just so dang big, and is the best problem solver I know, well hes one of the smartest people I’ve ever met in real life. maybe THE smartest.

anyways is it still possible, if even barely, for him to be an astronaut or is he immediately kicked? and if he is immediately kicked, how should I tell him so he can be crushed and unmotivated while he’s still a high schooler and not when he’s applying for a job and suddenly learns his entire lifes work has been for nothing?

Question How to get a job in Mission Control/ Flight Operations (mid- career)

Hi all! I currently work out of KSC as a contractor and similar to quite a few folks on this page, I would love to work in mission control/ flight ops and seen the question being asked from a new grad perspective. However, I'm wondering as a mid-career engineer with about 10 years of aircraft and spacecraft ground test experience if I should diversify my experience with a flight test role or something along those lines to help land a role there. For a bit more background, I'm also currently at KSC as a contractor. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Self Any current civil servants that were insourced have advice on resume building?

I’ve been working at nasa as a contractor for the last 13 years, it is looking a bit more certain that my position is going to be insourced and I really haven’t touched my resume in about 5 years. (I know I should have kept up with it) So I’m looking for any tips to possibly make it better for the position. Thanks!

Question How to Become A Program Analyst?

My dream is to do program analysis for NASA. Got super close in an interview process (contract) but unfortunately a 50/50 went the other way.

What are your tips? Events, networking tips, experiences to seek, etc.? I have solid financial analysis but not too much project-focused stuff, and I want to give no excuse for a rejection next time.

Thank you!

Hey all, I got a tentative offer from NASA and I'm currently a fed transferring over. Paperwork's done and HR has everything they asked for.
For anyone hired recently, how long did it take you to get the final offer? And did they make you redo fingerprints or background forms, or just use your existing investigation?
Thanks!

As everyone knows that ai is rapidly increasing day by day , and will move forward on its own (ig), there will be shrinking of jobs right? Like flight software , ai can easily code or any llm models are smart enough ? , I m a cse fresher intrested in space tech, it hit me that ai can easily move forward without much human influence (like it can spread like a disease) hope u get the analogy , it can multiply in intelligence on its own. Sry for dumb post, if I m wrong pls enlighten me
