Is there anything in particular that stands out to you? Only 10 Distracted Driving offences means that people put down their cellphone as they approached the checkpoint.(We all know how rampant cellphone use while driving is…) I can’t fathom why there are nearly 700 aggressive driving offences.

MVI in auto sale ads?

Presently shopping for a vehicle, why does everyone indicate the MVI date when it just has to be redone when you close the sale and register it in the new owners name? Are MVI slips not non-transferable after like 30 or 60 days?

Car Advice

Sadly, It’s about time now for me to ditch my old car…it has been great not having a car payment but it has started costing me money for upkeep and cannot rely on it much longer.

I am looking for advice on finding something affordable since I am low-income. I am not looking for anything fancy and it doesn’t have to be brand new.
Should I lease or buy? I am in HRM but willing to shop outside the city for a better deal. Is there a particular dealership or car make I should focus on for the best negotiated price?

Thanks for any advice you have to offer!

To the buddy in the versalift truck who helped me out today

Thank you for stopping and helping me while I was flailing to get the nut loosened on my flat tire around Antigonish. I clearly need to hit the gym.

Also I'm sorry that I hugged you after you refused to take money for helping me out. In retrospect that was really creepy and probably gave serial killer energy...

I did make it to Halifax on the donut though. Thanks for being a real one 🤙🏼

🏠 Advice: Moving to NS Moving from Northwest US to Halifax

I want to preface this with the fact that I am a dual citizen (my dad was born in Saskatchewan) so I do not have to deal with visas or any insane fees, and I’m going to be living with a friend and their family as I am partially disabled due to my current housing situation and environment.

I still would enjoy some second thoughts and experiences because I am kind of a picky person about where I live and as someone who was born in the northwest United States which is majorly different than anywhere on the east and less populous I’m worried I may be unhappy with the experience over there.

For background, I’m 21 (will be moving when I’m around 22), intersex, and I’m in the foodservice/commercial culinary business. I was raised in the more rural areas of the northwest including Montana, Wyoming and Alaska but I didn’t really like any of those places whatsoever (a big reason why I want to be away from them…). I’ve found one of the only places I’ve really enjoyed the vibe of was Seattle, mainly because it had a huge arts scene and a lot of public markets and spaces. Most of my displeasure with many places in the east is the population density it has and the lack of public forest areas compared to locations I am used to.

I’m mainly curious on if Halifax also shares some of these attributes I’m seeking (public nature parks, good art/events scene, markets etc), and anyone’s opinion on whether or not it would be enjoyable for me? But in general, I’m okay with anyone’s prior experience living there as it helps me extremely. Thank you so much.

Building in NS

We have a Kent mini home and we’re thinking about building a new house next to the mini home and then selling the mini home once we’re done.

My question is how much does it cost to build a house here in NS? Just in materials, labour isn’t a concern at the moment. We live in a rural area and we’re thinking about building a bungalow style house, around 1200sqft.

We own the land, already live on it. We don’t need to budget for well or septic.

Edit: Thank you everyone for the responses. Like I said, we were just thinking about building a new house and honestly, I don’t think we can. It’s insane how expensive building a house is now and honestly we’re lucky we have the house we’re in.

The only reason we want to build is for square footage. Our current home is just under 700sqft, not large at all. Building on has its own issues, so we were just exploring building new.

Thanks again everyone.

Starting antidepressants in Nova Scotia

Hey everyone, I’m wondering if anyone here has gone through the process of starting antidepressants in Nova Scotia, especially around Cape Breton/Antigonish.

I’ve been thinking about trying medication for a while and would really like to talk to someone about it. I don’t have a family doctor, and I’m honestly not very comfortable talking to doctors in general. I tend to get really anxious about saying the wrong thing or not explaining myself properly.

I tried going to the ER about this last year, but unfortunately nothing really came from it. The whole experience left me pretty discouraged, so I’ve been hesitant to try again.

I do have an Ontario health card, if that makes any difference, but I’m mainly just interested in hearing from people who have actually gone through the process themselves. What was it like getting started? Did you find it difficult to get someone to talk to you about medication?

I’d just really appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences and what the process was like for them.

Fake Inspection call for the efficiency NS program

Just a heads up to people, I received a call tonight at 6:30pm from someone claiming they are affiliated with Efficiency NS and conducting inspections of heat pumps that were installed using the rebate program last year.

The guy left a message and knew my name and the company that installed my heat pumps. He was trying to book an appointment for October 24 or 25 (yesterday and today) . He left his name and was very firm when saying it.

I googled the phone number and the Facebook post from efficiency ns from 2024 came up where they warned people of scam calls. Just wanted to spread awareness that this scam is still going around.

Stay safe out there!

🏠 Advice: Moving to NS Advice for deducted deposit

Recently I moved out of an apartment after staying for a year and completing the year long lease. I had paid 1200 deposit and was deducted $480 for minor paint chips, some of which were there when I moved in (I took photos for proof).

I was also deducted for a couple of scuffs the wall and door jam (where I had put a hanger over the door) as well as for a burnt in deposit on the burner from water spilling over while boiling. Lastly I was charged for painting and filling where I had hung up pictures and a key holder when I was told I was allowed to do so. When I initially rented I was told I won’t be deducted for normal wear and tear. Other than this the apartment was spotless

The landlord took 25 days to send me back my deposit after moving out. I had to reach out to the landlord after receiving no response. The landlord told me he would keep me updated regarding the return of my deposit several weeks ago.

I was only now informed I would only receive a portion of my deposit back

Looking for people’s opinion and whether it is justifiable to deduct my deposit given the situation.
I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Sydney Airport parking

Hello! So I'm traveling to Newfoundland for 4 days from Wednesday to Sunday for a vacation my question is about parking at the airport is it as simple as just going in getting ticket and then paying when I get back? Is there some stuff to keep in mind any special places to park any permit I must get or a park and go type of area designated for long-ish term parking? Also what about pricing.

Thanks for any answers input and tips I appreciate it,

Cheers!

Edit: is there an open/close time for the parking? I assume not but I'll be arriving there before 6am so I suppose it's best to ask. Thanks for all the answers you guys are very helpful.

Trust attorney in the province?

Hi there, I'm in Ontario, I know, but please be kind. I'm asking here because I'm not afraid to make a fool of myself to help this cause.

I'm looking to speak to an atty practicing in NS about how to help a dear friend set up a trust for a reward fund for a missing loved one, as the cause is determined foul play by investigators.

Im out of my depth here and so is the family of the missing person. They thought they could set up a trust at a bank, but that's not the case. The goal is to secure 5k already set aside and get advice about how to ensure it's used properly, allow the account to grow if donations come in but with a clear plan for how those donations will be used.

I realize this is a crazy ask. Again, willing to make a fool of myself. Any recs to attys who handle setting up trusts in NS welcome. I'll do the legwork.

Tysm in advance for any help, this family absolutely deserves it❤️

Funeral Expenses

I know Nova Scotia has the Embalmers and Funeral Directors Act and the Cemetery and Funeral Services Act, but I am not familiar with them.

A few months ago, about 6, I went with a relative to make arrangements and pay for their future funeral. The funeral home indicated that these funds were placed in a trust and when this person would die there may be additional expenses. I asked if there were yearly statements to indicate how the funds were doing in the trust. Their reply was simply “no”.

This past week another relative passed away. They had made arrangements almost 4 years ago with the same funeral home. The family got charged an extra $350.

Without knowing how the trust was doing, I feel the funeral home can basically charge anything and say that the trust did not keep up with inflation.

Are there any regulations that apply? Have you had a similar experience? Were you charged more? Do other funeral homes provide trust statements?
