For my Master’s thesis in Psychology at the University of Zurich, I’m running a study looking at substance use experiences alongside how people perceive and judge different kinds of living beings. Takes about 20 minutes, fully anonymous.

Unfortunately, the survey is only available in German, so you’ll need to be fluent in German to take part. No substance experience is required – everyone is welcome to participate, but people with experience are especially valuable for this study.

I make a podcast about consciousness, and this video starts with a question I couldn't let go of.
LSD came out of ergot, a fungus that grows on rye. The same organism caused ergotism, the burning, gangrenous "St. Anthony's Fire" that killed people for centuries. The same family of alkaloids gave Hofmann the molecule at Sandoz in 1938. One fungus was both a poison and the raw material for the most famous psychedelic ever made.
So how did people live alongside it for so long? Was it only ever a disease, or did anyone work with it on purpose, and why is the written record so quiet? The Eleusis/kykeon ergot hypothesis is the best-known attempt at an answer. It's still contested, and I try to say clearly in the video what's documented and what's my own reading.

Hi all,

I am PhD research from the University of Derby, i'm currently recruiting for my final 2 studies of the thesis. My work is concerned with conceptualising substance use, understanding the identity of users and deconstructing UK drug policy under a critical Post-Marxist lens.

For my first study I am looking to recruit anyone over the age of 18, who is a UK citizen to complete a 25 minute word task concerned understanding substance use.

For study 2 I am conducting interviews designed to understand how current substance users, understand use and construct their identities. The interviews are to create a safe, open and non-judgmental space where we will explore identity and offer a voice to an under represented group in research. In order to participate in the interviews you need to be over 18 years old, be a UK citizen and a current users of a substance deemed illicit by UK drug policy. Interviewees must consider their use either recreational, spiritual or for mental wellbeing purposes and deem their own use to not be problematic (i.e. dependency or otherwise harmful).
